For the latest episode of the A is for Architecture Podcast, I spoke to architectural historian, writer and curator, Sir Charles Saumarez Smith CBE about his forthcoming book, John Vanbrugh: The Drama of Architecture, which is due out with Lund Humphries in November this year. Sir John Vanbrugh (1664–1726) was an English dramatist turned architect, best known for designing Castle Howard and Blenheim Palace, two of the most ambitious Baroque buildings in Britain. A member of the Whig elite and the Kit-Cat Club, Vanbrugh's work can be read through the social forms of his times but, as Sir John suggests, more importantly in the context of his unique theatrical imagination as it was revealed through his collaborations with professional architects, like Nicholas Hawksmoor. Mocked in his own life, Vanbrugh is now celebrated as one of England's most original and daring architects.Sir Charles was chief executive of the Royal Academy of Arts (2007-2018), director of the National Gallery (2002 – 2007) and before that, director of the National Portrait Gallery (1994 – 2002). Read more about it here: PROJECT23 Our text today is Mark 15:16-20: And the soldiers led him away inside the palace (that is, the governor's headquarters), and they called together the whole battalion. And they clothed him in a purple cloak, and twisting together a crown of thorns, they put it on him. And they began to salute him, “Hail, King of the Jews!” And they were striking his head with a reed and spitting on him and kneeling down in homage to him. And when they had mocked him, they stripped him of the purple cloak and put his own clothes on him. And they led him out to crucify him.— Mark 15:16-20 Imagine the governor's courtyard, a legion of soldiers gathered. They strip the King of his robes—only to dress him in a cruel mockery of royalty. They crown him with thorns—pain woven into every spike. They salute him with disdainful words: “Hail, King of the Jews!” They beat him, spit on him, and kneel in fraudulent tribute. And through it all, Jesus endures. He stands unmoved by mockery because he came to bear our shame and absorb our scorn. Every insult hurled at him echoes the sins he carried. Every strike echoes the curse we deserved. This is the cost of our redemption: mocked yet unmoved. When the world mocks your faith—when Jesus' name is taunted—remember he faced far worse for you. He was humbled, so you could be honored. He bore the blow so you could bear his name without fear. So when you face ridicule: Don't respond in anger. Don't hide your faith. Stand unmoved. Your confidence isn't in your strength—it's in his. His mockery turned to victory on the third day. And your scars of ridicule can become stamps of his grace. #MockedYetUnmoved, #Mark15, #ChristOurKing ASK THIS: Why did the soldiers mock Jesus as “King”? How does knowing Jesus endured scorn change your view of suffering? When have you felt mocked for your faith, and how did you respond? What would it look like to stand unmoved by the world's scorn? DO THIS: The next time you sense mocking or rejection because of Jesus, quietly pray: “Jesus, You endured more for me—help me stand unmoved.” PRAY THIS: Lord Jesus, you endured mockery and pain to save me. When I face ridicule, give me courage to stand firm in your name, trusting in your victory. Amen. PLAY THIS: "Man of Sorrows."

Welcome to The Daily, where we study the Bible verse by verse, chapter by chapter, every day. Today's shout-out goes to Michael Mitchell from Jacksonville, FL. Our text today is Mark 9:9-13: And as they were coming down the mountain, he charged them to tell no one what they had seen, until the Son of Man had risen from the dead. So they kept the matter to themselves, questioning what this rising from the dead might mean. And they asked him, "Why do the scribes say that first Elijah must come?" And he said to them, "Elijah does come first to restore all things. And how is it written of the Son of Man that he should suffer many things and be treated with contempt? But I tell you that Elijah has come, and they did to him whatever they pleased, as it is written of him." — Mark 9:9-13 The mountaintop moment is over. And as Jesus, Peter, James, and John descend, Jesus gives them strict orders: "Tell no one—until the Son of Man has risen from the dead." What a strange instruction. You've just seen a divine vision—and now you're told to stay silent? But Jesus isn't hiding the truth. He's timing it. Some revelations only make sense after the resurrection. The disciples obey—maybe because they just heard the audible voice of God. But they're confused: “Rising from the dead?” they whisper. “What does that even mean?” Then comes the question that shows their hope and misunderstanding: “Why do the scribes say Elijah must come first?” They were still hoping for a victorious Messiah—one who would conquer, rule, and restore. They knew Malachi 4 said Elijah would come before the “great and awesome day of the Lord.” But they didn't realize that day would come through suffering, not strength. Jesus affirms that Elijah did come—John the Baptist filled that role. And how was he received? Rejected. Mocked. Killed. And Jesus makes it clear—the same will happen to him. The road to glory runs through grief. The path to resurrection winds through rejection. Rejection by the world doesn't mean rejection by God. It may mean you're right where you're supposed to be. Like the disciples, we want crowns without crosses. Glory without grief. But Jesus never promised that. He promised resurrection—and resurrection always follows death. So trust him in the mystery. Even when it hurts. Even when it's quiet. Even when it doesn't make sense. Because when God says, “Not yet,” He's not always saying, “Never.” He's just saying, “Wait—it's not time… yet.” #NotYetDoesntMeanNever, #TrustHisTiming, #Project23 ASK THIS: What “not yet” have you been hearing from God lately? How do you typically respond when God's plan confuses you? Have you ever experienced rejection while doing God's will? How can remembering Jesus' path through suffering change your perspective today? DO THIS: Write down one area in your life where God feels silent or slow. Pray over it today—and say aloud, “Not yet doesn't mean never.” PRAY THIS: Father, I trust you—even when I don't understand your timing. San Fruttuoso Abbey is nestled in a cove off Italy’s northwest coast. Accessible only by boat or foot, it’s a secluded gem. But even more treasure hides in its bay. As divers venture into the sea and descend fifty feet down, the figure of a man starts coming into view. This is Christ of the Abyss, the world’s first underwater statue, placed in 1954. The bronze figure depicts Jesus in the depths, His hands raised to heaven. The depths. Maybe you’ve experienced them. “I sink in the miry depths,” Psalm 69 says, “I am worn out calling for help” (vv. 2–3). Mocked by his foes and estranged from his family (vv. 4, 7–12), the psalmist found no comfort in others (v. 20) and feared his misery would “swallow” him up (v. 15). Whether it’s sin or sadness that takes us there, the depths are life’s moments of dark despair. Thankfully, this isn’t the last word on the depths. For while they’re cold and lonely, there is One who can be found in them (139:8). And He will rescue us from their chill waters. “I will exalt you, Lord, for you lifted me out of the depths” (30:1). As that sculpture reminds us, when we’re sinking under the world’s weight, we’re not alone. Jesus by the Spirit is there in the depths, His hands raised high—ready to meet us and lift us out in time.
