Aside from my husband and my dad, Lars Peterson and Drake Self have been some of the most influential men in my life. I'm so grateful for the chance to talk with them a bit about how they met while at the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympics. C.S. Lewis Quote: "In friendship...we think we have chosen our peers. In reality a few years' difference in the dates of our births, a few more miles between certain houses, the choice of one university instead of another...the accident of a topic being raised or not raised at a first meeting--any of these chances might have kept us apart. But, for a Christian, there are, strictly speaking, no chances. A secret master of ceremonies has been at work. Christ, who said to the disciples, "Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you," can truly say to every group of Christian friends, "Ye have not chosen one another but I have chosen you for one another." Friendship is not a reward for our discriminating and good taste in finding one another out. It is the instrument by which God reveals to each of us the beauties of others."PEBBLE OF THE WEEK: Get in touch - whether in person, a phone call, a text, just something - with someone who has been a Pebble of Light in your life.Episode with Lars' mom, Myrna: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/023-how-to-harness-your-tragedies-to-empower-others/id1534389323?i=1000531649389RESOURCESAffiliate Disclaimer - As an Amazon Associate and member of other affiliate programs, we may earn advertising or referral fees from qualifying purchases. Scott“We have been created for a purpose. Learn of your divine purpose and then live up to it. This will come to you as you seek for it. Ask your Heavenly Father, in the name of Jesus Christ, how He feels about you and your mission here on earth. If you ask with real intent, over time the Spirit will whisper this life-changing truth to you. Record those impressions, review them often, and follow through with exactness. I promise you that when you begin to catch even a glimpse of how your Heavenly Father sees you and what He is counting on you to do for Him, your life will never be the same!” - Russell M. Nelson, Facebook Post 02/18/2018“Truly, as obedience and morality decline in the world, the Lord is sending more exceptional spirits to earth. As a body they excel the average capacity of their forebears. Their potential for personal growth and positive contribution is enormous. As parents and leaders, how are you cultivating that potential?” - “Realize Your Full Potential” Elder Richard G. Scott“Brothers and sisters, our children take their flight into the future with our thrust and with our aim. And even as we anxiously watch that arrow in flight and know all the evils that can deflect its course after it has left our hand, nevertheless we take courage in remembering that the most important mortal factor in determining that arrow's destination will be the stability, strength, and unwavering certainty of the holder of the bow.” - Jeffrey R. Holland, “A Prayer for the Children”"They came as they were, unique, wonderful spirits and my blessing was to just unwrap the package to see who they were and to help guide them into who they could be. PEBBLE OF THE WEEK: Do your best to really see people and understand their story. This can be as simple as looking the store clerk in the eye while (sincerely) telling them thank you and to have a wonderful day. Or it could be taking time to talk to someone while in line at the store or even reaching out on social media to an acquaintance and learning more about their story. Emily Jones shares how the program that she developed with her husband David has blessed their lives through the development of an internal filter for their family’s use of technology. We also discuss this amazing generation of kids and the importance of inspiration in knowing how to parent and guide them.2 PEBBLES OF THE WEEK: Take some time to assess your personal use of technology. Maybe try that activity we mentioned of going to a park and watching the role technology plays in others. If you are a parent, I have an additional pebble for you. Take some time this week to think about what you are grateful for in your kids. Is it the way they make you laugh? Their determination that sometimes manifests itself as stubbornness? Is it their kindness, their go-getter attitude? Is it the way they give you a sweet hug each morning? For me, focusing on gratitude in regards to parenting has helped me to feel inspired as to how to help and support that particular child.RESOURCES:Affiliate Disclaimer - As an Amazon Associate and member of other affiliate programs, we may earn advertising or referral fees from qualifying purchases. Melinda Clayville documents her family adventures in American Samoa under the handle AmSamFam on Social Media and YouTube. In this interview, she shares a few of the things they learned as they moved their family of 5 across the ocean.PEBBLE OF THE WEEK: In one of my favorite talks, “Choose Ye This Day to Serve the Lord” by Julie B. Beck, she states, “I was taught years ago that when our priorities are out of order, we lose power. If we need power and influence to carry out our mission, then our priorities have to be straight. Years ago I began using a system that works for me, and maybe it will work for you. There was a time when I needed to prioritize, and in one of those sacred meetings between me and the Lord, He gave me three categories that I have worked from, and they have been a guide in my life. The categories are the essential things, the necessary things, and the nice-to-do things. I started writing those things down.” Take some time to think about your schedule pre-pandemic vs mid-pandemic. Whether knocking on your door, riding a bike through your neighborhood, on a theater stage, or these days, on social media, you’ve likely seen some missionaries from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints with their black nametags. Today we get to talk to a missionary mom and talk about what it’s like to send your kid to serve as a missionary. PEBBLE FOR THE WEEK: If you know the mom of a missionary, reach out to her and let her know that you appreciate all that she is doing to allow her child to serve – especially with all that is going on with the pandemic. If you don’t know the mom of a missionary, next time you see some missionaries out on the street or knocking on your door or on your social media feed, think of how their mom and let them know that their mom loves them.RESOURCES:Affiliate Disclaimer - As an Amazon Associate and member of other affiliate programs, we may earn advertising or referral fees from qualifying purchases. Teri Hoeksema is the owner of “Forever Fit” a personal fitness training studio in Idaho. On her website, it says, “Beauty is not perfection, skinny isn't necessarily beautiful. What is truly beautiful, is confidence in oneself; and the recognition that we are who we are, for a very important reason.” I love how her take on personal health ties in with divine identity. Doctrine & Covenants 64:33-34 states, “Be not weary in well-doing, for you are laying the foundation of a great work.” But what happens if you are weary? What happens if you are exhausted, burned out, over-stretched, and just need a break? This week, Anne shares some tips about overcoming (and allowing) those feelings of weariness. PEBBLE OF THE WEEK: Choose one of these 3 tools to help with feelings of weariness to try this week.Reflect on previous successes and strive to keep moving forward in the little things that help you deal with the big things.Take time to “Just Be Held” Take time for stillness. I have some tools for this. A book that I love and recommend is “The Power of Stillness.” I’ll link it in the show notes. Also, there is a BRAND NEW app from the fabulous group at The Small Seed. Search the App Store or Google Play for “Small Seed Still.” If you are unfamiliar with The Small Seed, you should seek them out on social media or on their website thesmallseed.com!Seek professional help if you are having a hard time getting out of a tough spot. I’ve seen a therapist a few times in my life and those visits and the help received have been instrumental in keeping me on the right path in life. If seeing someone in person is tricky for one reason or another, I have heard of a service called Better Help (h-e-l-p). I have not used their service but I have heard it recommended from people that I trust. Myrna Peterson is a quadriplegic living in rural Northern Minnesota who is a proactive advocate for differently abled persons. She has done a TEDx Talk, broke a Guinness World Record and is a recipient of the very prestigious Andrus Award for Community Service. She says that she only has one thumb that moved but she has a mouth that doesn’t stop. And she uses her voice to do all the good that she can. Brené Brown has said that “people are hard to hate close up.” Do your best to get know someone and understand their perspective – especially if it is different from yours.RESOURCES FROM THIS EPISODE: Affiliate Disclaimer - As an Amazon Associate and member of other affiliate programs, we may earn advertising or referral fees from qualifying purchases. Lewis - “In friendship...we think we have chosen our peers. In reality a few years' difference in the dates of our births, a few more miles between certain houses, the choice of one university instead of another...the accident of a topic being raised or not raised at a first meeting--any of these chances might have kept us apart. But, for a Christian, there are, strictly speaking no chances. A secret master of ceremonies has been at work. Christ, who said to the disciples, "Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you," can truly say to every group of Christian friends, "Ye have not chosen one another but I have chosen you for one another." The friendship is not a reward for our discriminating and good taste in finding one another out. It is the instrument by which God reveals to each of us the beauties of others.” (From the book, “The Four Loves.” https://amzn.to/2HaTBBn) Follow Pebbles of Light -Website: www.annemaxson.com/podcastFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/pebblesoflightInstagram:@PebblesOfLightEmail: podcast@annemaxson.comThis episode on YouTube Get great products and merchandise while supporting Pebbles of Light -Shine Cosmetics (**Always get 10% off with code AnneM10Clothes Shop Anne does with her boys: (**Always get 10% off with code AnneM10 at checkout.)
