What if your past didn't define your future—but prepared you for it? In this episode, I sit down with Jimelle Carlson, founder of Foundations Cognitive School, who went from being an unwanted child in a home full of alcoholism, abuse, and neglect to a powerful advocate for children and education. Her story is one of faith, resilience, and discovering self-worth in God's love. We dive into how unhealed wounds can lead to cycles of shame and poor choices—and how breaking free starts with allowing Christ to work IN you, rather than hoping He'll magically change those around you. Jamel shares how she overcame trauma, built a life of purpose, and now helps others do the same. We also explore how to raise resilient kids by allowing them to learn through struggles, build confidence, and find strength in challenges. If you've ever doubted your worth or wondered how to move forward, this conversation will inspire and encourage you. Don't miss it! Xo, Donna Listen in to learn more! As an educator, I encounter students every day who face challenges in bouncing back from adversity. Many struggle with managing stress, overcoming peer pressure, and adapting to changes in their relationships. They often have an unrealistic view of life, believing that everything should be perfect at all times. However, we, as adults, recognize that life is not always easy. To empower our children to withstand life's challenges, we must teach them these vital skills—and we need to start earlier rather than later. Tune in to today's podcast as Kelley inspires us with actionable ways to make a difference.

Michelle Gladieux is President of Gladieux Consulting and Author of the book “Communicate with Courage: Taking Risks to Overcome the Four Hidden Challenges” where she focuses on leadership and communication, strategic planning facilitation, and building creative tools that yield personal and professional development. Mike Petrusky asks Michelle to share her views on communication and how it applies to challenges we face in managing the built environment today. Communication involves risk, engaging in a new mindset or behavior with no guarantee of the result, so Michelle offers strategies to confront the four hidden challenges in communication: hiding from risk, defining to be right, rationalizing the negative, and settling for good enough. Mike and Michelle agree that having a physical presence in the workplace, at least occasionally, is essential for developing trust and connection among our teams, so they share practical tips for better communication that will inspire you to be a workplace innovator in your organization! Living in a cycle of self-criticism and perfectionism is draining, making it feel like nothing is ever enough. The pressure to meet unrealistic standards often hides the progress you've made. Focusing on flaws instead of strengths leaves no space for self-compassion. Freedom comes from realizing imperfection isn't failure—it's a natural part of growth. Appreciating your effort can be just as meaningful as achieving the perfect result. Kerri Walsh Jennings is a legendary volleyball player, having won three Olympic gold medals, and a highly sought-after speaker and mentor. Today, Kerri shares her story of embracing imperfection and harnessing her potential. She also offers insights on getting through negative environments and inspiring the next generation of athletes and leaders. Join in as young leaders pose inquiries about life, personal development, and beyond! Quotes: “Our potential is always there for us to reach, which is beautiful.” – Kerri Walsh Jennings “If we want it badly enough, we'll go get it. But oftentimes we get stuck and think, ‘Oh man, I'm embarrassed, I'm ashamed,' and the longer we do that, the longer we're just stuck.” – Kerri Walsh Jennings “The way I perceive what I'm going through is going to dictate my experience. Because everything that we're presented with, whether it's failure or success, is neutral, but what meaning we give to it is what it's going to be.” – Kerri Walsh Jennings “It's just a shift in the story that we tell ourselves. That's the mindset. It's the stories we tell ourselves about ourselves, to ourselves, and we've got the power to change that at any time.” – Matt Beaudreau Takeaways: Practice reframing anxiety as excitement by using breathing techniques and positive self-talk. Commit to consistent self-improvement by identifying your weaknesses but avoid self-criticism. Be willing to look foolish in pursuit of your goals. Cultivate a support network of positive, inspiring people. Surround yourself with those who will challenge you to be your best self, rather than those who bring you down. Take intentional breaks and explore new interests to renew your spirit and gain fresh perspective. Avoid the pressure of year-round specialization in your craft. Lead by example and embody the values you want to see in others. Focus on your own development first, and inspire the next generation through your authentic, consistent actions. Conclusion: Leading by example and taking intentional breaks can inspire others, especially the next generation. By focusing on personal growth and staying authentic, you show the value of balance in overcoming challenges. This approach promotes self-improvement while encouraging others to realize their potential. True leadership lies in living in a way that motivates those around you to grow and succeed.

Once upon a time, I found myself trapped in a tumultuous marriage, isolated by society's prejudice against divorce. It was an upsetting period filled with emotional upheaval, but it was also the catalyst that led me to a path of self-discovery and healing. This episode explores these challenging moments and the transformative journey that followed. We're joined by author Deborah Gaskell, who shares her wisdom and insights from her enlightening book, 'Single and Sublime.' We also examine life transformations, societal taboos, and the power of self-governance, using our personal stories to illustrate these themes. As we open our hearts to each other, we discuss the significance of self-control and explore the concept of the "love zone." We share how we navigated the murky waters of self-pity and emerged stronger and more self-aware. Together, we uncover the possibilities of redemption amidst adversity and highlight the importance of introspection in relationships. This is an episode about overcoming personal struggles and finding the will to set faith-based goals as opposed to chasing fantasies. As the episode draws to a close, we dive into the importance of writing down and pursuing a vision. We share our experiences on how we overcame the numbing effects of pain and rediscovered our sense of self. Finally, we remind ourselves and you, our listeners, to share the wisdom gained and the positive messages we've learned along the way. “Your most limiting factor is yourself.” - Tessa Nge In this week's episode of the Scaling UP! H2O Podcast, we're thrilled to bring you an empowering conversation between host Trace Blackmore and two leaders in the water treatment industry— Tammy Faber, Sales Director, and Tessa Nge, Service Quality Supervisor at HOH Water Technology. Together, they explore how diversity fuels success, the importance of overcoming Imposter Syndrome, and how you can take meaningful steps to give back to our industry. Diversity Drives Success: The Data Speaks Diversity isn't just about creating fair workplaces—it's a proven driver of business success. Tammy shared powerful insights from a study titled “Diversity Drives Sales Success: The Link Between Successful Sales Teams And Diversity, Equity, And Inclusion,” commissioned by LinkedIn. This data shows that teams with strong diversity practices see: 6% higher customer satisfaction 12% higher sales 28% higher conversion rates 3% higher sales forecasts "Diversity drives sales," Tammy stated. It's clear that fostering diverse teams doesn't just boost morale—it boosts the bottom line. Diverse teams approach challenges from different angles, offering innovative solutions that serve a wider range of customers. When organizations embrace diversity, they unlock untapped potential for growth. Overcoming Imposter Syndrome: A Battle We All Face Imposter Syndrome is a challenge many of us encounter, no matter our level of expertise. Tessa opened up about this, emphasizing "Imposter Syndrome is something everyone struggles with. Overcoming it is hard and takes intentional practice." It's not about eliminating self-doubt overnight but about taking deliberate steps to recognize and overcome it. Tessa and Tammy's top tips for overcoming self-doubt: Acknowledge your accomplishments. Take time to celebrate your achievements, no matter how small. This can shift your mindset and reinforce your value. Step out of your comfort zone. Growth comes from challenging yourself. As Tessa mentioned, "You won't grow unless you're willing to be uncomfortable." Seek feedback. Tammy also highlighted the importance of feedback, saying, "I always start by asking if it's a good time to provide feedback. This shows respect and creates a space for open dialogue." "Your most limiting factor is yourself," Tessa wisely added. By recognizing that our self-doubt often holds us back, we can take intentional steps toward building confidence. Building a Culture of Support Creating a culture of support is vital for both personal and professional growth. Tammy and Tessa also discussed the vital role of a positive workplace culture in fostering growth and confidence. According to Tammy, "Intentionality is key to defining your culture. It should flow through every aspect of your organization." She emphasized that a strong culture empowers employees to thrive and feel supported. Tessa echoed this sentiment, noting that a culture of trust and accountability allows individuals to flourish. "When you remove micromanagement and create a supportive environment, employees can focus on their growth," she said. By promoting mentorship, offering training opportunities, and encouraging open dialogue about the challenges we encounter, we can cultivate a healthy work culture that benefits everyone. Taking Action: Give Back to the Water Treatment Community This week, we challenge you to give back to the industry that's given so much to you. Whether it's mentoring a young professional, volunteering with a local organization, or visiting a school to inspire students about careers in STEAM, now is the time to make an impact. As Tammy passionately said, "We need people that love this industry, that have a heart to help others and to grow others. There is no amount of expertise needed. The only thing you need is a willing heart and time." By giving back, you not only help others but also strengthen the community that has supported your own journey. Final Thoughts: Know Your Worth We wrapped up this inspiring conversation with a powerful reminder from Tammy: "Know your worth. Take time to identify your limiting beliefs and pull them out by the roots. You are unique, and your talents are valuable." Overcoming Imposter Syndrome and stepping into your full potential requires recognizing your own value. No matter where you are in your career, these lessons—embracing diversity, overcoming self-doubt, and fostering a culture of support—are essential for growth. The challenge is…explain alkalinity to a non-technical person. Now, if you're like me, this is a fun challenge! I LOVE explaining industrial water treatment to people! If you're not like me, then sorry, but please do this challenge anyway. Alkalinity is a foundational bit of knowledge we must all understand as industrial water treaters. Technically, it is defined as the acid absorbing or neutralizing property of water. Sounds simple enough, right? What are the chemical components that make up alkalinity, though? We usually think of carbonate, bicarbonate, and hydroxide ions, but can there be others? Why does alkalinity matter in cooling systems, boilers, closed loops, and wastewater? The answer can be different for each. How do we measure alkalinity? We talk about P-alkalinity, M-alkalinity, and OH or hydroxyl alkalinity, but how are each different, how are they related, and what is each measuring? Total alkalinity and M-alkalinity are the same thing. That can be confusing to some. Why are they the same? How would you explain this to a non-technical person? Can you explain it right now or do you need to do a little more research first? Albert Einstein once said, “If you can't explain it simply, you don't understand it well enough.” This is your challenge to understand alkalinity well enough to explain it simply.
