Description: If we're lucky, most of us will live an abundant life that's filled with a number of significant transitions. How we embrace those inevitable life changes and honor that growth can make a big difference in how we are prepared to meet future challenges. Today, Jen and Amy have the pleasure of sitting down with Melinda French Gates to discuss how, at 60, she is stepping into this next beautiful season of life. By giving a rare glimpse into her interior life, and sharing previously untold stories included in her new memoir, The Next Day: Transitions, Change and Moving Forward, Melinda shares the heart-connecting lessons that we all can apply to the universal moments in our lives – including becoming a parent, the loss of a close friend, the loss of a marriage, knowing the right time to make a career move. In this episode, we discuss: The art of letting go and beginning again and making the most of the time between an ending and a new beginning How growing up in a middle-class Catholic family influenced Melinda's values and worldview What it looks like to loosen the bonds of perfectionism and embrace uncertainty in times of change The new projects, ideas and hopes Melinda has for the future Thought-provoking Quotes: “Surround yourself with great people who are all charging toward the same mission.” – Melinda French Gates “There was something about the rollback of women's rights in the United States that I just never thought we would see in our lifetime. To see that my granddaughters will have fewer rights than I have, just shouldn't be. I felt called to try and do something about that.” – Melinda French Gates “When you lift women up, what I know from all over the world is, they lift families up and they lift societies up. And so they should be able to step into their full power, but there are still barriers in society that hold us back.” – Melinda French Gates “Women don't tell each other enough that we're proud of them so it's good to hear it, no matter who you are.” – Amy Hardin Resources Mentioned in This Episode: Melinda Gates: The Power of Lifting Up Women - https://jenhatmaker.com/podcasts/series-18/melinda-gates-the-power-of-lifting-up-women/ Sara Bareilles - She Used To Be Mine - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=53GIADHxVzM Adele - Easy On Me - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U3ASj1L6_sY The Gates Foundation “Make Me Care About… with Jen Hatmaker” podcast - https://www.gatesfoundation.org/podcast/make-me-care-about The Next Day: Transitions, Change, and Moving Forward by Melinda French Gates - https://amzn.to/3FBDoTV The Moment of Lift: How Empowering Women Changes the World by Melinda French Gates - https://amzn.to/3FIW98c Gates Foundation - https://www.gatesfoundation.org/ Pivotal Ventures - https://www.pivotalventures.org/ Guest's Links: Website - https://www.pivotalventures.org/ Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/melindafrenchgates Twitter - https://x.com/melindagates Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/melindagates Youtube - https://www.youtube.com/c/melindagates TikTok - https://www.tiktok.com/@melindafrenchgates Connect with Jen! Are you a perfectionist? Do you ever spend time alone in silence? Today, Jay sits down with Melinda French Gates, co-chair of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and founder of Pivotal Ventures to talk about her journey from studying computer science at Duke University to working at Microsoft, and eventually transitioning into philanthropy. Melinda highlights the importance of goal setting and quiet reflection, practices instilled in her from a young age; the challenges women and people of color face in achieving equality, emphasizing the need for more inclusive policies and support systems; and the importance of diverse representation in leadership and decision-making roles. Melinda shared insights into her parenting approach, emphasizing the importance of instilling values of kindness, responsibility, and giving back to society. She also shared her journey of grappling with the decision to publicly support contraceptive access, which conflicted with her Catholic faith. This decision involved deep reflection, discussions with family and friends, and a significant amount of time spent questioning and reconciling her beliefs. Later in the conversation, Melinda highlighted several key lessons she learned later in life, such as the realization that the world is not equally accessible to everyone, particularly women and people of color. This understanding fueled her advocacy for creating more inclusive environments and breaking down barriers that prevent these groups from reaching their full potential. In this interview, you'll learn: How to embrace change positively How to spend time alone How to set and achieve goals How to overcome imposter syndrome How to teach children the value of service How to build a culture of giving How to foster kindness and gratitude Take a moment to reflect, give yourself grace, and celebrate your authentic self. Let's grow together, one imperfect step at a time. Amy: Welcome to Breaking Down Patriarchy! I'm Amy McPhie Allebest. One of the most life-changing classes I've ever taken was a class at Stanford taught by Anne Firth Murray, called International Women's Health and Human Rights, which examined the lives of women from birth to childhood to adulthood to old age, especially focusing on women in the developing world. I have wished many times that every human being could take a class like that - it was so important in my education as a citizen of this world. So I was thrilled when my friend Becca Archibald gave me a book for Christmas last year, The Moment of Lift: How Empowering Women Changes the World, and I discovered that this book covered so many of the same topics as that class, with clear, precise language and a multitude of gripping stories from Melinda Gates' humanitarian work all over the globe. I added it to the reading list, and I was so excited when my friend Sara Abbasi agreed to be my reading partner for this book. Sara and I met in that class on women's health and human rights, and listeners will see why she is such a treasure of wisdom and experience on these topics. Thank you so much for being with us, Sara! Sara: Thank you, Amy! It's an absolute pleasure and honor to participate in your podcast! Amy: Could you introduce yourself and tell us where you're from and what makes you who you are? Sara: My name is Sara Abbasi. I was born in Lahore, Pakistan, and grew up around the world. I spent the first 9 years living in different cities across Pakistan - we moved almost every other year as a result of my father's job. When I was 9 years old, my family moved to Brussels, Belgium. We lived there for about 4 years. In Brussels, I attended a French, Catholic all-girls school in Brussels. This was quite an experience -- I did not speak a word of French. I had attended English schools in Pakistan. And being in a French school was quite a challenge at first. But within six months I was fluent in French. I still remember during school recess, some of my classmates teaching me how to say the alphabet and numbers in French. In the context of the book we are about to discuss “The Moment of Lift,”, I think that probably was one of the first instances of “lift” in my life -- girls helping girls! When I was 13, my family moved yet again. We moved from Brussels to Manila, Philippines. I attended the International school in Manila. That was a truly international school -- I had friends from all around the globe, and had this wonderful exposure to different cultures and religions. I came to the US for university. I attended Bucknell University for 2 years. During my first semester at Bucknell, when I was 18, I got engaged in an arranged marriage, and married 2 years later. I moved to California right after my wedding. I was able to transfer to Santa Clara University where I completed my undergraduate education. My husband and I started our family soon after. We now have 3 children. They are all grown, and out of the house. Over the years, I served on the boards of various NGO's (non-governmental organizations) based in the US and Pakistan. *One of the NGO's I've been involved with for over 20 years, is called Developments in Literacy (DIL) DIL also means “heart” in Urdu. DIL is a US based non-profit working to establish schools for girls in Pakistan. In 2000, I met DIL's CEO at an event and offered to make a donation. She asked if I would instead start a chapter in San Francisco -- to raise awareness about DIL's work and to raise funds. I got a small group of friends and started the chapter in 2001. We organized annual fundraisers for DIL. I served on the international board of DIL for 13 years. As a board member, I made annual trips to Pakistan to visit our schools and meet with our students, teachers and parents. I...

PEBBLE OF THE WEEK: Do your best to really see people and understand their story. This can be as simple as looking the store clerk in the eye while (sincerely) telling them thank you and to have a wonderful day. Or it could be taking time to talk to someone while in line at the store or even reaching out on social media to an acquaintance and learning more about their story. Brené Brown has said that “people are hard to hate close up.” Do your best to get know someone and understand their perspective – especially if it is different from yours.RESOURCES FROM THIS EPISODE: Affiliate Disclaimer - As an Amazon Associate and member of other affiliate programs, we may earn advertising or referral fees from qualifying purchases.

This week I pay tribute to International Women's Day by sharing some of my own thoughts, observations, and experience of gender disparity. I am primarily focusing on the experience of working mothers in this podcast, as this is what I can talk to. I can’t speak on behalf of all women’s experiences, just my own experience, and observations. But I do know there are many commonalities in my own experience and numerous other women I have spoken to. I draw on the research of Professor Linda Scott in her recent publication, The Double X Economy, and from the writing of Melinda Gate's The Moment of Lift to highlight how my experience is not unique, but there are so many parallels between working mother's experiences globally. How women around the world carry the parental load and often fall behind in their career trajectory for the greater good of their children and family. And yet the world over, we don't recognise, celebrate or fully appreciate this unpaid care work. TOPICS INCLUDE:The insanity of motherhood in the 21st century for working women Current society and workplace has been slow to adapt to the changing needs of employees with young families Our childcare routines for full-time working parents are just not conducive to a healthy family lifestyleBusy, tired mothers of young children do not have the time or energy to be at the decision-making tables (in their current format) There is currently less than 25% female representation in the Irish Government When women leave their work to raise children, they lose their financial independence and become economically vulnerable Insufficient recognition or remuneration for care work carried out in our societyWe need to challenge archaic systems and modes of operation that no longer serve all of societyThe provision of a state-funded, quality childcare system for all children would help achieve gender parityEqual partnership with a similar division of labour is as good for romantic partnerships as it is for a business relationship RESOURCES INCLUDE:The Moment of Lift: How Empowering Women Changes the World by Melinda Gates: https://www.amazon.com/Moment-Lift-Empowering-Women-Changes-ebook/dp/B07FCJPWSTThe Double X Economy by Professor Linda Scott: https://www.doublexeconomy.com/_______________________________________________________Subscribe to YouTube channel: https://bit.ly/3jLTdaqRate & review Journeying podcast on iTunes: https://podcasts.apple.com/ie/podcast/journeying/id1529912826Like Facebook Page: https://bit.ly/33kp4bUVisit the Journeying website: https://journeying.me/Instagram: @journeyingpodcast

Or it could be taking time to talk to someone while in line at the store or even reaching out on social media to an acquaintance and learning more about their story. Michelle and guest host, David Hayward, discuss The Moment of Lift: How Empowering Women Changes the World by Melinda Gates. Their conversation explores gender equality, female empowerment, and more. From the back cover: "How can we summon a moment of lift for human beings―and especially for women? Because when you lift up women, you lift up humanity. For the last twenty years, Melinda Gates has been on a mission to find solutions for people with the most urgent needs, wherever they live. Throughout this journey, one thing has become increasingly clear to her: If you want to lift society up, you need to stop keeping women down. In this moving and compelling book, Melinda shares lessons she’s learned from the inspiring people she’s met during her work and travels around the world. As she writes in the introduction, “That is why I had to write this book―to share the stories of people who have given focus and urgency to my life. I want all of us to see ways we can lift women up where we live.” Melinda’s unforgettable narrative is backed by startling data as she presents the issues that most need our attention―from child marriage to lack of access to contraceptives to gender inequity in the workplace. And, for the first time, she writes about her personal life and the road to equality in her own marriage. Throughout, she shows how there has never been more opportunity to change the world―and ourselves. Writing with emotion, candor, and grace, she introduces us to remarkable women and shows the power of connecting with one another. When we lift others up, they lift us up, too." About David: "David Hayward is the NakedPastor. He has a Masters in Theological Studies from Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary, a Diploma in Religious Studies and Ministry from McGill University in Montreal, and a Diploma in University Teaching from the University of New Brunswick. He served the church as a pastor for 30 years and left the ministry in 2010. Like all graffiti artists, NakedPastor uses words and images to challenge the status quo and offer hope for those who struggle and suffer under it. He founded and facilitates The Lasting Supper, an online community for those looking for a safe alternative to church. He coaches people who long for spiritual freedom and independence."

In this week’s episode (Episode 16) of Supermom Rehab podcast, I get to speak with Sara Dean, creator and host of the Shameless Mom Academy podcast, about the divide that exist between black and white mothers and the historical legacy of mistrust that exists among many moms of color when they enter white mom spaces. There aren’t that many candid conversations between white and black moms that center specifically on race, and we speak on how moms of color can no longer give white moms a pass for not acknowledging their privilege and not using it to elevate, center and support the voices of moms of colors, which often get shut out of so many conversations. We spoke about how it is insufficient for white moms to be allies and how moms of color are waiting for white moms to be proactive in becoming accomplices and dismantle the structures that perpetuate racism. Some of the points that Sara and I discussed were: The importance for moms of color to have their own spaces and why white moms should respect those spaces. Sara’s personal story that opened her eyes and the need for moms of color to get comfortable with calling out white moms who aren’t practicing inclusivity Sara spoke about the need for white moms to be courageous enough to get uncomfortable and have conversations about race- and how silence is actually reinforcing structural racism. I discussed anxiety that many black mothers have when leaving their children in predominantly white spaces, such as schools. I also discussed how many black moms have valid suspicion when they enter spaces with white moms because many times their needs are marginalized or not included in conversations. Sara’s journey of how she is moving from allyship and how we as moms of color should demand for white moms to be proactive in becoming accomplices. I spoke about my privilege as a black doctor and how looking at how we want white moms to show up is helpful to think about how I need to show up for black moms who may not have the same privileges I have. Sara also talked about the power of social media to allow us to get more educated without putting the onus on those who are even more marginalized and to eliminate our desire to ask others to educate us. A new bestseller from philanthropist and entrepreneur Melinda Gates tackles issues of gender equality and women's empowermnet. Her book "The Moment of Lift: How Empowering Women Changes the World," proposes that if you want to lift an entire society - all genders - you need to invest in women. On this episode of Hacks and Flacks, Account Supervisor Kylle Sullivan and Senior Account Executive Bill Moody recap the major themes from the book and also discuss the issue of gender equality through the lens of the tech and PR industries. We also hear from Cheryl Gale, co-founder and president of March, on the unique paradox facing many women in PR: despite the fact that women make up between 60 to 80 percent of the PR workforce, only 20 percent of the senior leadership positions at PR agencies are held by women. Overbooked continues in Q4: Every quarter, we’ll select a book with a technology innovation theme to read together, and we’ll be announcing our next selection soon. For Melinda Gates, there’s never been a more critical time to call the world to action to break down system barriers for women. In her recent book, The Moment of Lift: How Empowering Women Changes the World, Gates shares enlightening data and personal stories from her work around the globe where she’s seen first-hand the power in challenging the status quo and dismantling pervasive gender inequities to advance society. Steve sat down with Melinda at The Executives’ Club of Chicago earlier this year to discuss why investing in women unlocks opportunity for all, her own struggles in finding her voice and achieving equality at home, as well as her lessons learned to incite lasting change.

Brad Feld is Managing Director @ Foundry Group, one of the most successful venture firms of the last decade with a portfolio that includes the likes of Zynga, Fitbit, SendGrid and many more incredible companies. Prior to co-founding Foundry Group, he co-founded Mobius Venture Capital and, prior to that, founded Intensity Ventures. Brad is also a co-founder of Techstars, the worldwide network of entrepreneurs in 150 countries and 300,000 alumni. Brad is also the co-author of the incredible, Venture Deals, for your chance to win a signed copy email venturedeals@foundrygroup.com with the code "First Episode". In Today’s Episode You Will Learn: 1.) How Brad made his way into the world of venture following 40 angel checks and how that led to his co-founding Foundry Group? Why did Brad find the transition from angel to VC in the early days such a challenge? What 2 core things did he focus on when writing angel checks? How has that changed now as a VC? 2.) How did seeing the boom and bust of the dot com impact Brad’s investing mindset today? How does Brad think about investing through market cycles and the right way to think about investment cadence? Why does Brad believe that to be successful as a VC you have to be fundamentally optimistic? 3.) Where does Brad believe we are today in the cycle? Does he agree with Bill Gurley on the biggest challenge being the "oversupply of capital"? What must entrepreneurs understand with regards to market cycle dynamics and how they can and need to future-proof their business? 4.) From analysing his best investments, why has Brad come to the conclusion that TAM in the early days is really not helpful? What are the commonalities in how Brad's most successful companies approach experimentation? 5.) What does Brad mean when he says, "don't have fake CEO or fake VC days"? What does he mean when he often says, "run your fucking business"? What in Brad's mind would constitute a "fake day" vs moving the needle for your business? What does Brad think is the best way for VCs to truly get to know one another? Why is, "hey let's do a deal together one of the most hollow and fake statements in venture?" 6.) Brad has sat on some of the most meaningful boards of the last 2 decades, what have been Brad's biggest learnings on what it takes to be a great board member? How does that change with the progression of your career? What advice would Brad give to me, having just gained my first board seat? If the VC does not support the CEO, what is the right process? Why does Brad believe the VC should work for the CEO? 7.) What is Brad's biggest advice when it comes to learning how to say no? What advice does Brad hear most often that he commonly disagrees with? Why does Brad feel we are in a moment of peak noise in the ecosystem today? To be a great leader, what 2 skills does Brad believe you need to have? In this episode of the Adventures in DevOps podcast, the panelists talk about Agile. Nell starts the discussion by mentioning that Agile came out of the Scrum movement and gives a brief history of how it started. She reads out the Agile Manifesto, and Scott explains what it is. They agree that “move faster slowly” can be considered as a motto of Agile. Scott talks about the testing aspect of it from a philosophical perspective, and Nell chimes in with comparison to how things were being done in the past versus now. They discuss the 12 principles behind the Agile manifesto. One - Our highest priority is to satisfy the customer through early and continuous delivery of valuable software. Two - Welcome changing requirements, even late in development. Agile processes harness change for the customer's competitive advantage, basically valuing learning and improvements. Three - deliver working software frequently, from a couple of weeks to a couple of months with a preference for a shorter time scale, the focus being on the code being in a working state. Four - Business people and developers should collaborate daily through the project. Scott elaborates on the point further, and shares his experience where it was challenging to work with the business side of the project. Five - Build projects around motivated individuals, give them the support they need and trust them to get the job done, trust being the most important factor here. Six - The most efficient method of conveying information is having a face-to-face conversation, here the panelists provide a counter-argument that in the era of online platforms and remote work, this is not necessarily essential. Seven - Working software is the primary measure of progress. Eight - Agile processes promote sustainable development. The sponsors, developers, and users should be able to maintain a constant pace indefinitely. ‘Sustainable’ is key here, avoiding overworking and burnout is important anyday. Nine - Continuous attention to technical excellence and good design enhances agility. This means doing the full set of code reviews and tests and still deploy software quickly and making sure that it doesn’t break things, if it does, it has to be rolled back. Ten - Simplicity - the art of maximizing the amount of work not done - is essential. This highlights the need for focus in the product, and not writing a lot of code that could eventually be unusable. Eleven - The best architectures, requirements, and designs emerge from self-organizing teams. Panelists talk about people involved in open source projects as an example of such self-organizing teams, where they work on their own schedule and have great interest in what they are building. Twelve - At regular intervals, the team reflects on how to become more effective, then tunes and adjusts its behavior accordingly. Retrospectives, reflecting where you are, how the team works together and documenting results as some sort of a learning exercise, are some of the practical examples of this. Nell then talks about the three layers of Agile infrastructure by Patrick Debois - considered as the father of DevOps. These constitute of technical - the hardware and software, project - the process that introduces changes in the environment, and the operations - the process of keeping the environment working. They state that we can build effective technology if we can relate to each other as humans, and discuss how Agile is perceived in certain controlled environments, if it’s possible in an Agile fashion and still have prescriptive solutions. They end the show with picks. “Chance favors the prepared mind” is often quoted to be from Louis Pasteur. Pasteur was a chemist and microbiologist who studied and found cures for a handful of diseases, including a vaccine for rabies. The concept that luck or fortune follows the bold, prepared, or active has long been discussed. The truth is, not everyone can be lucky. Only those that do, are rewarded. Even lottery winners have to buy a ticket. In running we experience the same thing. You simply don’t know how “lucky” you can be unless you get out there and start running. The beautiful thing about running is that there is much more to it than winning races; you have chances to “win” every day that aren’t necessarily podium moments. As we’ve discussed, wins in running include enjoying nature, discovering new places, developing relationships, and maintaining good mental and physical health. Running is also a time when great business ideas or solutions to long-term problems are discovered. The opportunities for victory while running are endless. But. If you do happen to be in-the-running for a particular race, that win comes via preparation as well. You don’t know when your moment to shine will come. The weather, your competition, or your overall health and energy fluctuate. The only way you can get lucky is by being prepared. This idea of preparation followed by chance is the epitome of Nicole DeBoom’s successful career. From Olympic qualifier, to top triathlete, to business owner, Nicole has done what it takes to put herself in a situation to succeed. Like the rest of us, she has had personal weaknesses and could never control her competition, but she put in the work and let the results happen. Go Through the Open Door Shortly after the peak of her triathlete career, DeBoom had an idea for a women’s clothing company. She felt that there weren’t many clothing options for professional athletes that were both stylish and up to performance standards. She wanted to look good and feel good while she competed. At the time, tennis skirts, golf skirts, and even swim skirts were available, but nothing for female runners. As she began to create a new type of running skirt, she quickly discovered that her target market wasn’t exactly what she expected. She had planned to convince other professional female runners to wear the skirt, but there weren’t a ton of them that were interested, and trying to further convince them didn’t help. However, she found that there was a lot larger range of women that were interested in the running skirts. Many women not only wanted to feel good while wearing stylish clothing, they wanted additional coverage so that they felt comfortable while running as well. Nicole quickly learned to create clothing for the women with this need, rather than create a need for a specific group of women. When she focused on helping her new customers, her business grew and her opportunities expanded. You may have many ideas and desires in life that seem like the only path to happiness or success. But if you are willing to take the opportunities that present themselves, rather than fighting to change what you can’t, you’ll find yourself succeeding quickly. This doesn’t mean taking the path of least resistance per se, but seizing the opportunities that are placed before you. You’ll Love What You’re Good At, So Try It All! Now Nicole is a mother, with a daughter who will have many opportunities. Nicole is focused on helping her find the things she enjoys and is good at. Giving her chances to try many things, and to not be too antsy in taking away the other things she loves too quickly. Nicole regrets putting so much time into swimming and neglecting other sports when she found out she could be a great swimmer. She wants her daughter to continue a variety of things, even if she is great at one. The same should go for you and I. What do you love to do? What are you good at? Chances are they are related. It’s not always certain which comes first, so don’t be afraid to try something you think you may love, or look for ways to enjoy what you are good at. When someone wants to make the world a better place – and actually has the means to do it – you wonder: How do they go about it? What are their guiding principles? What works and what doesn’t? In this candid and inspiring interview, Alan Alda asks Melinda Gates about her work as a philanthropist and her lifelong dedication to social change. They discuss her book, "The Moment of Lift: How Empowering Women Changes the World," and what happens when the data suggests one course of action, but the reality on the ground suggests another? The magnetic Dr. Debi Gilmore joins Grace Jensen for an episode packed with tools for building and maintaining bonds. We first hear about how Dr. Gilmore's passion for sharing the truth of attachment theory inspired her to create and teach a groundbreaking workshop called “Building a Lasting Connection”. It has been perfected over the last decade and targets couples in all stages. Participants learn interactively and bond intensely over the course of two days. Register for a workshop or request a workshop be created at buildingalastingconnection.com. You can also visit them on Instagram @buildingalastingconnection.Grace then takes us back to talking about how attachment theory applies to adults. (14:35) Dr. Gilmore reviews different attachment styles and explains where they come from. (19:00) The two discuss the complexities of communication, as it's the first step to fulfilling the (marvelously universal) need of connection. (28:00) Next, Dr. Gilmore teaches Grace the Four Mantras of Love, key concepts to communicate to your partner in order to sustain and strengthen your bond. (32:30) These mantras form the base of a pyramid that will be covered over this and the next episode. The second layer is “the mat,” a tool for slowing and deepening communication. (42:00) Each ring on the physical mat represents a different topic for each partner to share as they physically step on it and move further inward. This episode is filled with lines you'll want to write down as quotes and tools you and your partner want to have as soon as possible! Philanthropist and co-chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Melinda Gates discusses her new book, “The Moment of Lift: How Empowering Women Changes the World.” Believing that all lives have equal value, Melinda and her husband, Bill Gates, have donated more than $50 billion to improving equity, health and education in the United States and around the world. Through her work at the foundation over the last 15 years, Melinda has seen firsthand that empowering women and girls can bring transformational improvements in the health and prosperity of families, communities and societies. “How can we summon a moment of lift for human beings?” Melinda asks. “And especially for women because when you lift up women, you lift up humanity.”
Today we have a bonus episode of the podcast with a very special guest. Many of the writers we speak with on the podcast are people who have made their names in the worlds of fiction, journalism or memoir, but today we're speaking with a writer who was working on changing the world long before she started thinking in terms of books. Philanthropist, businesswoman and global advocate for women and girls, Melinda Gates is the co-chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates foundation and the founder of Pivotal Ventures, a company working to drive social progress for women in the United States. She joined us on the phone to talk about her new book The Moment of Lift: How Empowering Women Changes the World. It combines a memoir of Gates's work to address the challenges that face ordinary women around the globe and an audacious analysis of how a change in the way we think about advocacy and women's rights can unlock startling possibility for change. She spoke to us on the phone from her office in Seattle just before The Moment of Lift was published.
Melinda Gates's new book The Moment of Lift: How Empowering Women Changes the World explains that empowering women can profoundly change the way that societies function. She is, along with husband Bill Gates, the founder the world's largest private charitable organisation and has consistently been ranked as one of the world's most powerful women by Forbes. So why has creating equality in her home life been such a struggle? When Josie Rourke became the Artistic Director of the Donmar Warehouse she was one of the first female theatre directors to be appointed to that role. Nearly eight years later she tells Jenni why she has chosen the musical Sweet Charity as her swan song and, in terms of gender, how much the face of theatre has changed in the last ten years. The UK government is backing a Nigerian advertising campaign urging Nigerian women and girls to find jobs at home instead of “risking a life of modern slavery” in Britain. So how bad is the problem here in the UK? Jenni is joined by Kathryn Baldacchino, Project Manager at Protect, the Anti-Trafficking Project at the British Red Cross and Kate Roberts, Head of Office at the Human Trafficking Foundation. The World Health Organisation has advised screen time is best avoided for the first two years of life. But what evidence is there behind this advice?
