Some people have the outdoors in their blood. Will Collins is one of them. From the time he attended his first summer camp as a child, he felt drawn to the outdoors. In this episode, I talk with Will about his path from childhood summer camps in Wisconsin to multi-week expeditions in remote areas. In 2017, he paddled source-to-sea on the Mississippi River. I ask him how he planned for the trip, about the generosity of people he met along the way and the daily rhythms of a long-distance trip, and also about adjusting to life after the completion of a big expedition. The year after his Mississippi River trip, he paddled for 70 days on the Yukon River. He describes how that trip differed from paddling the Mississippi. Will's love for the outdoors extends well beyond his own expeditions, so we finish with a discussion of his podcast, Buffalo Roamer Outdoors, and the guided trips he coordinates. Will's enthusiasm for getting outside is infectious and may inspire you to get out for your own adventures.Hope you enjoy this Guest Post as Will joined Dean Klinkenberg on the Mississippi Valley Traveler Podcast.Join Will on the River! Placing your faith in AI - how it can benefit your cybersecurity strategy

Guest Post by Mike Fry, Security & Cloud Business Unit Director, Logicalis 2023 will always be remembered as the year in which the progress and capability of Artificial Intelligence (AI) truly accelerated - with 2024 likely to build on this progress. Following the launch of ChatGPT in late-2022, the technology and its various capabilities have moved from a science fiction concept in most people's minds to an everyday reality and the uptake of it will only increase in the months and years to come. Everyone now has access to sophisticated AI models, and that includes cybercriminals. The financial impact of cyberattacks continues to rise and having a system that can deal with every sort of threat - including those of the AI-driven variety - is imperative. As we enter this era of widespread AI, companies should be looking at implementing security systems and strategies which also leverage the technology to remain one step ahead. Cyberattacks can take place in different ways, including malware or ransomware attacks which aim to steal data or hold it for ransom. But how do organisations best rebuff such attacks? There is also a skills gap in the IT industry which is particularly pronounced in the cybersecurity sector, leading to fatigued and overwhelmed teams trying to tackle more incidents. All this leads to a higher chance that an important Indicator of Compromise (IoC) will be missed, which is where AI comes in. A Helping Hand Integrating AI into security strategies and deploying powerful AI-enhanced threat detection means that technology can bridge some of that gap and reduce the chances of a breach. AI can also automate repetitive tasks for cybersecurity teams, mitigating any fatigue issues and safeguarding the business. However, AI shouldn't be viewed as a replacement for people. By incorporating AI into security defences, organisations can better equip staff to manage risk and help them make better-informed decisions. The technology can proactively combine external data and combine it with internal data to help determine what the next move should be. In all cases, the IT team has the ultimate say in how much and what sort of work the AI does, as well as where it can be most effective. A Faster Response AI can catch connections for threat and risk insight, highlighting potential issues that staff may miss due to turnover, inexperience, or the passage of time. In other words, it finds commonalities to add more context and catch what otherwise may be missed. As AI can read more data than a human is capable of, it can reduce detection and response times, enable deeper and more consistent investigations, and empower analysts to make data-driven decisions when it comes to threats. It can also assist in alert prioritisation, allowing investigations to be conducted thoroughly in a fraction of the time it may otherwise take. For example, IBM has developed a framework which allows analysts to visually depict a timeline of events showing the progression of a threat, resulting in faster and more accurate threat detection or prevention. A Comprehensive End-To-End Tool At any stage of a data breach, AI enables organisations to be better prepared and recover faster. AI security intelligence programmes can deliver an all-encompassing analytics solution on a single platform. This comprehensive suite of solutions means that a business' data will be kept as safe as possible, and the system will continuously improve over its lifespan, learning from previous attacks and allowing companies to reassess and redefine their incident response strategy. Such solutions offer an unparalleled flexibility and peace of mind that your business is ready to deal with any threat efficiently, effectively, and promptly - which is the expectation of cybersecurity defence around the world. This is more critical than ever as AI-driven cyberattacks become more commonplace and sophisticated. As well as helping to tackle the rising threat level, deploying AI means th...

I introduce the post and podcast with my own words then read his thoughts addressing the social media discussion asking whether women can teach other women theology. Quick take: the answer to the title's question and conclusion is YES. I wrote that- The Bible says of itself, "All Scripture is inspired by God and beneficial for teaching, for rebuke, for correction, for training in righteousness; so that the man or woman of God may be fully capable, equipped for every good work." (2 Timothy 3:16-17). Limiting your sharing of His word with other women to just one or two verses is a rejection of God's proclamation of the usefulness of His own words. Guest Post by David Stephen Researchers at Yale University, this year, restored organ functions in pigs hours after death, opening possibilities for the future of medicine. The breakthrough, using their innovative OrganEx, also restored cellular activities to some areas of the brain. OrganEx consists of an “infusion device and a synthetic solution'. In a news release by the NIH, “it was tested in pigs undergoing cardiac arrest, beginning one hour after cardiac arrest and continued for another six hours. OrganEx was able to circulate the fluid throughout the body and deliver adequate oxygen to tissues. It also prevented electrolyte imbalances that normally occur when blood flow stops. The researchers compared OrganEx with a conventional heart-lung perfusion machine that pumped the pig's own blood back through its body.” Can OrganEx help Redefine Death and Consciousness? “OrganEx perfusion for six hours preserved cell and tissue integrity and reduced cell death in various organs. These included the brain, heart, liver, and kidneys. In the brain, OrganEx preserved all three major cell types: neurons, astrocytes, and microglia. Cells in the heart, liver, and kidneys had less damage than corresponding cells after treatment with the standard device. The researchers also found signs of restored organ function in the perfused pigs. They observed glucose uptake in brain, heart, and kidneys. They found electrical activity and contraction in the heart, and protein synthesis in the liver and brain. Several organs activated genes associated with cellular repair processes and preventing cell death.” The Brain Pioneering studies into the end of life as well as into aging has accelerated in the last few years. The studies are important, in part, because of diseases whose probabilities grow with age. Some of these diseases are based in the brain—the key organ of existence. The brain has functions that include control or regulation, interpretation and so on, for internal processes and for external experiences. The brain is important in cardiopulmonary resuscitation and for cardiac defibrillation, since all sensory signals must get to the brain for processing, and in those cases, the rearrangement within the brain, for some, makes them come back. There are explorations of the states of consciousness, including in coma, under general anesthesia, during sleep and others, that processes go on in the brain, to certain extent, without external inputs. Support facilities like ECMO can keep vital organs functional, when coordination with the brain dips. The key question though is what does it mean to be alive? Is life defined by working organs, cellular activity or obtainable consciousness? There are people with conditions where certain functions are lost, like the hands and legs or some organ in the body, but with the brain, okay, can carry on with some aid. This shows a fusing of the brain and the body. The brain is where the control or regulation happens, but the body is where the parts are. Control can also be explained to be updates not driving. This means that the brain gives limits and extents of how parts of the body should function. Signals to the brain, then back is to ensure that it is correct, but not directly like the brain is driving the organ to work, per se. When something goes wrong, the organ may not know, but it is the update that is sent to the brain that lets the brain know that this is beyond a limit, and there might be a problem. If there is something the brain can do, like to coordinate for blood clots in a wound, or for secretion of some molecules or something else, then it does. In some cases that the brain cannot, the person may pass out, or if worse then something else, or there may be need for some physical action. Organs can always function without the control of the brain—using the last possible update of how they worked. This means that say there is a particular rate of a kidney process, regular—as given by the brain,...

Can Tech and Brain Science Solve Maritime's Drug Smuggling?

Guest Post by David Stephen Europol often makes news for drug bust, including the recent interception of a 21 meter-long vessel, conveying over 4.6 tonnes of cocaine worth around EUR 150 million. Europol and partners, including the Drug Enforcement Administration [DEA] are focused on the supply side of the problem, with paths towards preventing the drugs and traffickers from reaching end users. Can Tech and Brain Science Solve Maritime's Drug Smuggling? This important approach has saved lots of lives and continues to be necessary amid the growing problem of drug addiction, overdose and deaths. The maritime industry has also implemented several solutions like x-rays, newer scanners, cameras, and so on, to prevent the share of drug smuggling by sea. The problem of drug trafficking and its part in organized crime strains law enforcement, the public health system and other aspects of society. Supply is one-half of the problem, with some suggesting that legalization of all drugs would fix the crime side of the problem. Maybe not. The war on drugs has been the war on the supply of drugs, which has had mixed success. Drug traffickers evolve as enforcement does. However, where focus should shift to, after decades of this same approach is the demand side. Why do people use drugs? That is a key reason drug trafficking is really a problem. If people don't need it, then supply is unnecessary. So if the reason it is needed is known, found, understood and exposed to users, many may seek out harmless alternatives, starving the illegal drug scene of customers. It is said that drugs give reward or pleasure—underwritten by dopamine. Neuroscience has studied dopamine, to understand what drugs do in the brain, for how it causes reward. But, there are several activities where reward is possible without drugs, sometimes including random pleasure or delight, after waking up, or doing nothing specifically. There are other times too, where there is sadness or heaviness, without any particular reason. There are times when there should be reward, from a possible dopamine activity, but nothing like pleasure is felt. There is something about what molecules do in the brain and what the experience is. There are people with mental illness or some with severe substance abuse disconnected from reality, where their lived experience requiring adjustment has no alarm from their conscious experience. There is a brain pathway of experience, as important as the cellular and molecular pathways. The brain builds experience with the chemical and electrical signals of neurons, but those are not experienced. There is no experience of an electrical signal, or of a cell or molecule in a situation. Experience is the state that is used in interactions with the world like fear, interest, anxiety and so forth. So how does the brain decide experience? Why is it that what should make happy does not always do, and what should cause sadness does not always do, even when external situations present? Conceptually, experiences in the brain are given when quantities acquire properties. This means that properties are in destinations in the brain, quantities relay there to acquire them to give what gets experienced in any moment, matching with the external or not. It is these, quantities and properties that cells and their signals in the brain build, for what is used to relate with the world. Molecules are not the last stop for what experiences are, like equating dopamine for reward, pleasure or anticipation, no, dopamine builds properties whose locations give reward or pleasure, when quantities get there. If they don't, there is no reward or pleasure. Dopamine depletion, in addiction cases, requiring more amount of a substance to get the high is also a properties situation, where the degree for the experience is higher, but dopamine is not the last stop. This is how the brain, theoretically, should be understood for experience and why people use drugs, whatever benefits many derive ...

Guest Post by David Stephen If the metaverse was predicated on reorganizing how the experiences of mental health and illness are understood, Meta would [most likely] not have needed to cut jobs. If Alexa had pivoted to providing moment-to-moment explanatory mechanism of experiences by the brain for mental health, illness and addictions, Amazon would [most likely] not have lost much in market value. Metaverse a Voice Assistant for Mental Health? Mental order and disorders are top health concerns globally but there is hardly a clear lead in terms of the conditions for the experience, as given by the brain. The brain is an organ of experiences as well as of cells and molecules. It is this experience that is used to interact with the world. The mechanisms of experiences are an opportunity for the metaverse, voice assistants, towards changing the direction of care for mental health and illness. In the moment before using an illegal drug, what is the state of mind, during and after, what are the states of mind? Usually, the mind can be confusing to explain, but with digital yellow pages of experiential pathways in the brain, individuals and their loved ones can pick from a set, to understand what it might be, at any particular point. For all experiences in the brain, there are quantities that relay to acquire properties. It is shown that emotional pain and physical pain have similar pathways in the brain. It can be explained that pain is a property, its acquisition by a quantity is possible by physical input or emotional. The same goes for anger, irritation, emptiness, boredom, loneliness, thirst, cravings, extremism, lethargy, stress and so on. There are properties destinations in the brain, where quantities relay to acquire. They include what is traditionally called emotions, memories and reaction. They are all property sets. People in the same situations don't often have the same properties acquired by their quantities, neither does the same person have owns quantity acquire the same property in the same situation at different times. This is how the brain decides, conceptually, for mental health, illness and addictions. Quantities and properties are the build or construct of cells and molecules of the brain for experiences. There are two key sensory processing or integration centers in the brain: the thalamus for most, and the olfactory bulb for smell, before senses are relayed to the cerebral cortex for interpretation. It is postulated that sensory processing or integration is into a uniform quantity which is thought or its form. It is what becomes the representative, equivalent or version of senses to the brain. Interpretation is postulated to be knowing, feeling and reaction, as sets of properties also built or constructed by cells and molecules in the brain. This is the basis of experiences in the brain. Displaying or reading this out in each situation is a revenue opportunity and growth path for tech, amid inflationary uncertainty in the near future. David Stephen does research in theoretical neuroscience. He has a research experience in computer vision at Universitat Rovira i Virgili, Tarragona. He was a visiting scholar in medical entomology at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. His writings explore the experiential mechanisms of the brain for human interactions with the world. Labor Economics, Layoffs: How Tiers can save Tech Jobs

Guest Post by David Stephen who looks at Labor Economics Tech work should be tiered, with the lowest tier for just 2-hours per shift, where the pay is considerably low, but output in that duration is sizable enough to match efficient productivity. The recent layoff in tech that many have said would continue through the new year is an opportunity to reorganize what it means to work in tech and for labor to be far more affordable. Labor Economics, Layoffs: How Tiers can save Tech Jobs There are already remote work, gig roles and well as freelance, but tier, with capped hours, pay and consistent intervals, for roles is a direction that could increase productivity and cut costs without layoffs. People can work for just 2 hours, in 3 shifts every 12 hours, making work and offs, 2 hours each. In that time, responsibilities via itemization and breakdown would likely be met, cutting out lost time during work, shared time with random stuff, distractions or multitasking inefficiencies. Those to take over can continue where the last person stopped, or can continue where they left from their last shift, but work and stop is to shape deliverables, to be underscored by the freshness or energy bump from the shift's break. Work is still mostly the traditional 8-hour shift, with pay and compensation at a level that makes cutting costs means to cut jobs, or outsource. Instead, with this new tier model, it is possible to have people work, pay them far less, and let them have breaks to rest or do whatever they choose, outside the area. This model can begin with tech jobs, but percolate to manufacturing, construction, small businesses and others, even as discussion of migrant workers and labor policies around the world are scrutinized. There will be people hired on higher tiers where they can work for regular hours, to design and coordinate work for the lower tier. The tier role will be arranged by software, to partition duties, contracts and chunking for tasks. There are regular maintenance and operation roles where 2 – 4 people can work on rotation within a day, spreading out what would have been for 1 person for a longer duration or 2 for the whole day. There are some cases the model will be applied, outside of tech, where lower than the minimum wage can be paid, by SMEs, just to reduce labor cost, while the intensity of what should become stressful is tapered. The other purpose of this is to explore free time, so that creativity and observations can improve, as an alternative to sole focus on assigned tasks, to see things differently, which could become helpful in seeking out new frontiers in the field, or for novel products and services to win competition. ATM Pay: Fintech for E-commerce Payment & International Remittance

Guest Post by David Stephen who discusses the concept of ATM Pay ATMs are an opportunity for a new channel of direct payment for e-commerce, online products and so on, to cover new markets, as well as open a new possibility for international remittance. There are lots of bootleg and digital piracy, in part because some who would have paid, have no easier channel to, or what they would have preferred to be a non-attached payment, is not a possible option. The better spread payments become, the easier it would be for those excluded to pay, rather than skip then seek out those products or services alternatively, without paying. ATM Pay: Fintech for E-commerce Payment & International Remittance ATMs provide a path for direct deposit to pay e-commerce, or say for products like digital news, books, application fees, Skype, Spotify, Netflix, HBO, Amazon, Disney +, Meijer, Carrefour, DIA, Microsoft, Google, Caprabo, Apple, Spar, magazine subscriptions, video games and so on. There is also a chance to do a limited form of international remittance at ATMs, where instead of international remittance with just P2P accounts, or agents, it is possible to do a direct means, just with ATMs between points. E-Commerce, according to Shopify, is $5.55 trillion global industry this 2022, yet it is stuck to cards, accounts, store and online payment systems, no direct deposit at ATMs. International remittance, according to a report by allied market research, was estimated at $701.93 billion in 2020, and is anticipated to hit $1.23 trillion by 2030, yet, it is stuck to agents, apps accounts, never directly with ATMs, with cash deposits and withdrawals, using small amounts and a token. Already, it is possible to do direct deposit for certain payments at ATMs for some revenue services. It is also possible to go to Walmart to pay with cash into Netflix, Spotify and Skype accounts. It is also possible to pay into an Amazon account, in stores, a maximum of $500. Mobile banking ATMs are ubiquitous across Europe and in other places, with deposit/withdrawal possible with or without card, in options as contactless, ‘cardless', where transactions use account based IDs. Most times, ATMs lay empty, with no users and rarely do long queues form at several locations, making them a great opportunity as a tool for payment for those who do not have or use their accounts, those whose cards cannot be accepted by some merchants because of location, those who have cards and account but prefer not to use for that purpose, emergency payment, alternative payment, security or fear of breach on certain websites, and so forth. How? An ATM application, connected to a network, allowing direct deposit transactions and instant payments, between individuals and merchants. Go to an ATM, convert a certain amount of cash into a number that can be used for payment online, or kept, within a timeframe. Also, deposit can be made directly into an e-commerce account or for subscription to a service, product and so on. To widen options, some can use their cards to do this at the ATM as well, but the market is direct cash. Though there is buzz about central bank digital currency, what seems like a necessity is convertibility and payment spread—in a new way. There is often the question of privacy, security, network vulnerability and penetration—across countries, but using obtained numbers to pay for stuff would be a new angle for a central stage for digital currency, with those numbers having value themselves. The system would be a set of alphanumeric digits, with parts of it representing value, possible use times, and a pin that the user could activate—at the point of obtaining it. These numbers can be up to 10 numbers and be made for acceptance for online sales, e-commerce, international remittance and more. It would bring those who use cash into possible digital payment as well as increasing options for subscriptions for some services to grow. ATMs are everywhere, so the DD pay application...

Guest Post by David Stephen The theories of consciousness that cannot be used to functionally explain mental health problems are simply inaccurate, regardless of how fanciful they appear. There are some who say the hard problem of consciousness isn't testable, but would not have said so if their theory could set up a test for it. The scientific and philosophical approaches to consciousness are cool for abstractions, debates, questions and guided tests, if there is no bigger problem of mental health that continues to confound solutions in this digital era. Brain Science, are Consciousness Theories Falsified by Mental Health? There are often views that mental health is political, social, economic, and so on, when it is obvious that solving all economic or political problems would not eradicate anxiety, depression, and so on. There are those who say mental health has nothing to do with the brain to a wide audience, using an opportunity that could have been useful towards progress to mislead others. The resources in the field of consciousness would have set mental health on a better course, if healthy or ill-healthy consciousness is themed in theories, rather than consciousness as unsolvable, so there is no failure in pursuing anything disconnected under the narrative of seeking c. Consciousness is simply a quantity that having it means being alive. The quantity is graded as prioritized and pre-prioritized, determining reaches. These grades exceed attention, awareness, conscious or unconscious, automatic or control. The quantity goes to locations to acquire properties. It is the property acquired that determines what is experienced. Experience is memory and feelings. Then reaction follows. That is what consciousness is, the quantity, what it becomes, where it goes, and its outcome. It fits in to being and knowing, or what it feels like to be something, or say a bat. The reason to have consciousness is to have a quantity of existence that can go through those. It is the properties it uses to define whatever is coming in to the brain from within [the body] or from the environment that enables the being to interact. The quantity is present in coma, under general anesthesia, sleep and so on, though what it becomes and where it goes is different from when awake and about. It is not important to have a theory of consciousness that is accepted or that this is it because being unsolved is the prestige. But what is important is how does the brain work to define mental health or ill-health at any moment? Labels There is a recent paper, Consciousness as a Memory System, with a new theory of consciousness and an amazing literature review on existing theories and the history of the subject. They noted that, “We argue that consciousness originally developed as part of the episodic memory system—quite likely the part needed to accomplish that flexible recombining of information. We posit further that consciousness was subsequently co-opted to produce other functions that are not directly relevant to memory per se, such as problem-solving, abstract thinking, and language.” All the existing and accepted labels of memory are not the functional basis of memory, regardless of how many studies seem to validate them. They are labels for specific experiences, never constant or account for how mental health invalidates them. Working memory or short-term memory is only accurate if the information is neutral. If a two-word or three-word bad news is delivered to someone in the same dimension of working memory, it will no longer be working, it will be lingering memory. Episodic memory of past events, episodes or experiences are weak when it is the episode remembered of an event that is causing trouble, but the other thing that should indicate otherwise was not recalled. This means that property of one was acquired and the other was not, for peace or ease. The memory does not function by such episodes. Semantic memory has to be neutral to actually be seman...

#28 What is Marketing Mix Modeling? 3 Benefits & Limitations

The Marketing Slice by Hurree

Play Episode Play 36 sec Highlight Listen Later Jul 23, 2020 16:33

In this episode of the Marketing Slice podcast, we're going to answer the question: What is Marketing Mix Modeling? And we will discover 3 benefits and limitations of this tactic. Marketing Mix Modeling (MMM) is closely related to the marketing theory concept of the 4Ps: Product, Place, Price, and Promotion. The 4Ps consider what factors are needed for a business to succeed, whereas MMM seeks to determine how much success was generated by each factor and forecast what future success could be achieved if changes were made to the marketing mix.Marketing mix modeling is a statistical method of determining the effectiveness of marketing campaigns by breaking down aggregate data and differentiating between contributions from marketing tactics and promotional activities, and other uncontrollable drivers of success. The results, or ‘output', of your marketing mix model analysis, will then inform the composition of future marketing efforts with a level of certainty, i.e. to change input ‘a' will affect output ‘b.'We will discuss the benefits and the limitations of MMM in this episode, as well as giving you the information you need to pitch a marketing mix project to your organization. MMM is a very complex process, so it's likely that you will require a specialist vendor to get the most out of your data. For this reason, we have covered some essential questions you should ask any MMM vendor before you finalize a deal. If you enjoyed this podcast, please hit the subscribe button. Many B2B marketers have been slow to adopt mobile marketing strategies specifically for B2B buyers. A key reason for this is that conversion rates tend to be lower on mobile devices (specifically, smartphones) versus computers. Since the nature of B2B selling is often complex, focusing on mobile-only strategies tends to take a backseat and a more omnichannel, multi-faceted approach is preferred when it comes to reaching B2B buyers via direct channels such as events, standard digital ads, corporate websites, and sales teams. But as mobile usage continues to grow among all consumers, B2B marketers need to start thinking about how to leverage mobile as both a channel and a tactic when creating their acquisition strategies. In this podcast, you will learn how B2B markets have evolved, meaning marketers need to adopt a mobile-first strategy or risk being left behind. Discover our range of other resources to help improve your marketing strategy including guides, infographics, blogs and videos over at https://www.hurree.co/resources.

Adrian is a construction worker and student of Five Figure Niche Site. This interview is from July 2018 and currently, Adrian is making about $300 per month in January of 2019. Look out for an interview update soon. We talk about: The age of the site and traffic stats. How he watched my YouTube channel and wanted to be a success story. A bit of his background: From Romania, moved to Spain, now in London. The massive mistake with Guest Post & how to avoid it. The power of the Keyword Golden Ratio. Tips for finding KGR terms. Quality content and why it's so important. Most of the posts are ranking on PAGE 1 of Google. The link building strategy & its role. Other mistakes that Adrian made & what you can learn. The transcript is here. Other Success Stories I talk about Success Stories and here is where you can find more of them. Question 1, From Heidi Heidi from ratraceescapeproject.com I am having this dilemma right now. I have one niche site which I started 10 months ago and then in my newbie wisdom (not!) I started a second site in the MMO niche about 6 months ago! Most days I wish I hadn't because I know I could be writing and concentrating on one site and it would be better for it, instead of having two that have to share my time and efforts. But now that I have two, both of which I really enjoy I feel like I have to just plug along with both. Interested in your thoughts Doug on leaving one without content for say 12 months to age, while I concentrate on the other one? Good idea? Bad idea? I work full time so my sites are a side hustle and I only write about 2-3 posts a week across both of them. Question 2, from Earl I’m YT subscriber and I’ve been going back through the KGR videos. While doing research I’ll find KW that very little all in title completion with some search volume. Below the .25 which makes them ideal. When I search the same KW in google, I’m getting a lot of online stores. The question is: Assuming I’m writing good content 1500+ can I still rank for the term or will the authority of the online shops still beat me out? Question 3, from James I have plans of creating a livable income with niche sites. However, I have one huge worry that keeps me up at night and holds my productivity back. That is… Amazon banning me from their associates program. I'm almost positive I follow all of their guidelines, but I've heard that Amazon is pretty unpredictable when it comes to banning people. So, should I worry about getting banned? Do you ever have worries or have you ever been banned? Do you have a plan if it does happen to you? Thanks a ton, James.
