Jaz, is the proud pastor of Macedonia AME Church in Accomac, Virginia. She serves as the Program Director for the Office of Inclusive Excellence at Mary Baldwin University and co-facilitates the African-American Religious History course with an emphasis on the lineage of resistance. Her work includes cross-cultural programming, leadership and professional development, civic, social, and community engagement, academic support, and advocacy. In 2016, Rev. Jaz received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Criminal Justice and Philosophy & Religion and is a 2021 graduate of Wesley Theological Seminary in Washington, DC with a Master of Divinity. Rev. Jaz has served in several capacities to include but not limited to youth and young adult programming, congregational and community asset mapping, congregational and generational culture research, and leading Black Liberation and Womanist studies. She has served the Washington, DC Poor People's Campaign as a social media coordinator, organizer, and tri-chair member. In addition to her formal duties, Jazmine has consistently invested in liberative education through her leadership in the Sacred Circle Womanist Conference and the Literacy to Liberation Initiative. She facilitated the formation of a local committee on equity, achievement, and opportunity in Staunton, Va and serves the community in voting and census registration initiatives. She also serves as the 2nd Vice President of the Staunton Branch NAACP. Earlier this year, Rev. Jaz joined the leadership of the Staunton Equity Coalition, a citizens organization committed to proposing policy that addresses inequities in education, policing, employment, and housing. Rev. Jaz is a contributing writer for the AME Church Christian Recorder and was recently featured in a national USA Today series on citizens who inspire change in their local community. Originally from New Orleans, Mia went on to obtain a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Musical Theatre from Syracuse University, a Master of Arts in Art and Public Policy from New York University—Tisch School of the Arts, and a Master of Divinity, with concentration in Psychology, Religion, and Homiletics from Union Theological Seminary in the City of New York. At Union, she was 2018 recipient of the Jonathan Kneeland Preaching Fellowship—awarded by Auburn Seminary—and the 2019 recipient of the Karen Ziegler Feminist Preaching Prize. This year, she is the recipient of the Duke Divinity Innovation Grant that will enable research and production around decolonizing liturgical practice and space. She migrated to the United States with her mom and sister when she was 11 years old to reunite with her dad in the land of the Iroquois in the Midwest. She spends most of her life in the midst of intersectionality as a Jesus loving Afro-Indigenous Peruvian woman, undocumented immigrant and a fat woman. Antiracism discipleship is the heartbeat of her writing and speaking. She has spent the last few years healing and reclaiming her story as her own after spending the majority of her life in white evangelical spaces. She dabbles in visual arts, writing, teaching, bookbinding, photography and recently she has taken up podcasting – El Cafecito with Karla – where she interviews her friends as they explore the themes of loving Jesus, choosing hope, and finding liberation together. Khristi is the author of Parable of the Brown Girl which is published by Fortress Press and released February 2020. The book highlights the cultural and spiritual truths that emerge from the lives of young black girls. Parable of the Brown Girl has received awards for Best Young Adult Book from The African American Literary Awards and the New York Black Librarians Caucus. She is currently working on her next book, Unbossed: How Black Girls Are Leading the Way. (Spring, 2022) with Broadleaf Books and a middle grade version of the book with Beaming Books. She works as Dean of Spiritual Life & Equity at the Hill School. Khristi is also an instructor of Religious Studies at the Hill School. She is the Founder & Director of “The Becoming Conference”, an annual conference and leadership cohort designed to empower, educate & inspire girls between the ages of 13-18. Khristi is a graduate of Temple University with a degree in Advertising and a graduate of Princeton Theological Seminary where she obtained a Master of Divinity degree. Khristi is an alum of the 2017 class of Lead New Jersey, a select group of fellows participating in a year-long program designed to educate, transform, and empower the next generation of leaders from the public, social, and private sectors. She also currently sits on the advisory board for Word Made Flesh, a non-profit organization existing to serve among the most vulnerable of the world's poor.
