All Shall Be Well: Conversations with Women in the Academy and Beyond

“If we were all created in the image of God, all of us who look so different...there is so much more to learn about God. So, I get one step closer to knowing God from exposing myself to different people...” — Khristi Lauren Adams Author and youth advocate Khristi Lauren Adams joins us on the podcast to discuss the theological insights we can learn from experiences of Black girlhood and how these truths can shape us all. Many of us are familiar with theological concepts that have been passed down through years of tradition in seminaries. But what can we learn about theology from the everyday experience of Black girls? Author, minister, and youth advocate Khristi Lauren Adams joins us on the podcast to discuss her recent book Womanish Theology: Discovering God through the Lens of Black Girlhood. Khristi and I talk about young people today and their unique perspectives on suffering, community, and spiritual practices. Khristi shares her experiences of learning from students with an attitude of humility and respect, and we consider the way kids today are growing up in a different set of cultural circumstances that previous generations. And if you listen to the end of the credits, you'll hear an excerpt from our conversation where Khristi offers her thoughts about the ways Gen Z will bring gifts into the world as they enter adulthood.  So jump right in! After four seasons, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt ended when its creators felt that the story had reached a natural conclusion. Rather than stretching the premise or compromising the quality of the show, they decided to wrap it up while it was still fresh and beloved by fans. In this wide-ranging conversation, Khristi Lauren Adams, author of "Womanish Theology," discusses her personal journey of discovering God through the lens of black girlhood. She reflects on the importance of integrating one's lived experiences with theological study, and how viewing Scripture and theology through diverse cultural perspectives can deepen our understanding of the divine. Adams shares insights from her interviews with young black girls, highlighting their unique perspectives on salvation, prayer, and the presence of God in the face of suffering and evil. She emphasizes the need for empathy, openness, and a willingness to learn from marginalized voices, rather than imposing one's own agenda or beliefs. We explore themes of identity, community, and the universal truths found in Jesus' teachings, underscoring the potential for reconciliation and redemption when we approach theological inquiry with humility and a spirit of curiosity. Join us as we discover God through the lens of black girlhood. Khristi Lauren Adams is a speaker, author, youth advocate and ordained Baptist minister. Khristi is the author of Parable of the Brown Girl, Unbossed: How Black Girls Are Leading the Way and its middle grade version Black Girls Unbossed: Young World Changers Leading the Way. Lauren has always had a strong work ethic that combines with a passion for working towards a greater good. Even as she pursued education, and then a career, in financials, she wasn't interested in the large public firms and the Wall Street culture. Rather, she focused on finding a work environment that fit her mission of working towards a greater purpose. And in the two companies she's worked for since graduating - Morningstar and the Center for Financial Planning - she's found just that.  Tune in for this episode as Lauren and Paul discuss why Lauren shifted from being a stock analyst to a personal financial planner, how the Center for Financial Planning is unique in its industry, and what helped Lauren to get through the early days of the pandemic - all while she was creating new company policies, going through the Small Giants Leadership Academy, and raising a newborn.

Lauren Adams, legal director for Women's Liberation Front (WoLF), the largest feminist organization in the country, discusses woke policies that are leading to censorship of women's rights advocates across the board. Adams describes WoLF being recently de-platformed on a fundraising website for their vocal opposition to a California law that allows biologically intact men, claiming to be transgender, to be housed with women in prisons. The legal director says that the consequences coming off of all the recent woke policies are all “natural and predictable consequences”, that “we can expect to see more of as time goes on”. Commenting on the recent controversies concerning Lia Thomas winning the NCAA women's swimming tournament and Rachel Levine being named “woman of the year”, Adams says in both instances you are already seeing the “taking away of opportunities for women to compete”. Going on to say, just in these two isolated instances, “look at how many women were displaced by his participation.” Commenting that current media censorship prioritizing transgender rights over women's is a “moral panic” and is “unsustainable”, which will lead to more people “opting out” of social media.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Congratulations, your offer was accepted! But there are still a few steps to take before you get those keys in hand. In this episode, host Nadeska Alexis talks with prospective buyers and a real estate expert to discuss what to expect when your offer is accepted, and what comes next.Andrew and Lauren Adams are based in Columbus, Ohio, with their one-year-old daughter. They paused their original search three years ago when an offer went sideways. Now, they're looking in Upper Arlington, attracted by the school districts and proximity to downtown. They're ready to make an offer if they find the right place, and they have a knowledgeable realtor on their team, but the market is extremely competitive. They've submitted a couple of unsuccessful offers. At this point, they feel like it's getting harder to make a competitive offer, especially when they're not sure who they're up against. The Adams worry they might end up settling for the wrong house because they're so sick of the process. They need insight into the kinds of concessions they could safely make to secure a house, and which things they should not negotiate on. They're wondering about the outlook on the market: Are they buying at the peak of a bubble? Should they buy the most or least expensive house in the neighborhood? And can they add value later through renovations?Nadeska takes those questions to Matt Laricy, Managing Broker for Americorp Real Estate. She asks Matt to walk listeners through what happens when an agreement is reached, and what kinds of issues can come up when navigating next steps like a home inspection.Overall, Matt says buyers should strive to ensure that they're not over-compromising on the things they want in a house, or getting in their own way with unrealistic expectations. You can read the full episode transcript on the Chase Website

Finding Your Artist Pathway Feat Brianna RuelasIn this episode Durell is joined by singer, and performing artist consultant Brianna Ruelas. Brianna and Durell begin the episode talking about how they got connected at the Springboard Music Festival and that from the moment they connected it's been so much fun to support each other. Brianna talks about her first introduction to music at the age of 9 where she performed in a talent show singing Debbie Gibson's song “Out Of The Blue”. She remembers singing over the vocals because back then at that age she didn't know how to remove the lead vocals and just sing over the backing track. She knew after that experience she wanted to continue to sing and perform and the path in which she took was musical theater, and ultimately decided to attend Pepperdine University to study musical theater. After graduation she started working at a restaurant in Malibu where she ultimately got connected with a voiceover artist and coach named Lauren Adams who helped her secure representation with an agency called Sutton, Barth, & Vernari Inc. Brianna knew that her ultimate goal was to be a performing artist and make music. She made the choice to audition for Season 4 of American Idol. Brianna shared that she actually auditioned 3 times but ultimately didn't make the final cut. She remembers that it was a very tough experience and even though she didn't make it on the show she was thankful for her experience. Brianna thought that after her experience on American Idol her music dreams were over but she learned the importance of how to manage expectations. What she ultimately learned was that it wasn't the end but really it was the beginning of a brand new journey. Durell asked her if the goal was to make a record after that but Brianna said that wasn't even the case; she just wanted to sing. Brianna and Durell talk about her meeting her husband Victor in Los Angeles and they knew they wanted to start a family. Brianna shares that she ultimately didn't want to raise a family in Los Angeles for a variety of different reasons. She and her husband decided to make the move back to her hometown in Dallas, Texas. Moving back to Dallas was also big for her husband because his ultimate goal was to open a restaurant and the opportunity for that was much greater living in Dallas. Brianna talks about the fact that she almost bought into the lie that just because she was a mom that she could no longer pursue her love for music. She shared that she didn't do anything related to music for several years which led to her going through depression. After some encouragement from her husband she decided to start performing with a band and make connections around the music community in Dallas. She made the decision to pivot into consulting and coaching artists/creatives because she was now a mom of three and didn't want to gig every weekend with her band. Brianna talks about being given the opportunity to work at a music school doing vocal and performance coaching after quitting her full-time job working in advertising sales. She talks about her husband receiving the keys to open the doors to a restaurant and them both suddenly becoming business owners and how scary that was while still having to provide for their young girls. She talked about all the business skills she had to learn to help support the opening of the restaurant being the foundation of what she does today as a strategist in helping indie artists with their careers in showing them how to take a small business approach to achieve success in their music career. Durell asks Brianna how she feels about artists who only view success from the viewpoint of being one of the biggest acts in the world. Brianna says that she always likes to dig a bit deeper to find out why they view success that way and that she isn't the right person to coach them because she doesn't promise that's what she can help them achieve. She shares that there are so many moving parts that have to come into play. Durell and Brianna talk about the work that will get creatives to the goal of being able to make a living doing what they love even if it doesn't look like what they envisioned when they first dreamed of a music career.Brianna talks about her first book she wrote entitled “Performing Artist Pathway: Navigating The Highs & Lows On Your Music Journey”. She speaks about the inspiration behind the book being that when she would do workshops and talk about what artists go through along the way she would get asked the same questions over and over and she felt like she should turn all of the information and advice she was often giving into a book. She shares that this book is a practical guide filled with tips and tricks that can really help performing artists. She talks about artists or people in making a decision to take action on the things they are passionate about and how it truly can be a game changer in pursuing their dreams and goals that make them happy which she calls freedom. Brianna and Durell end the episode talking about the journey her husband and family have had being restaurant owners. She shares that for 7 years it truly had been a labor of love and that to see the restaurant be shutdown due to the pandemic was truly very hard. She does say that though because of the restaurant she now has been afforded such a unique entrepreneurial background that has truly been a blessing. She talks about a book she read called “Blue Ocean Strategy” which focuses on operating within a niche and how that provided such a vision for her to be able to establish herself in the marketplace helping indie artists/creatives.Brianna talks about the creation of her reality show singing summit. She shares that the summit was inspired by the creation of her online course entitled “Make Reality TV Your Reality Online Experience. She shares that so many talented indie artists/creatives go on reality singing shows and are unprepared to capitalize and make the most out of their experience. She wanted to create a space to educate and enter these extremely empowered situations and do what needs to be done so they can make an impact and ignite the next phase of their music career.
