From Soul Food to Black Veganism with Christopher Carter

The Biggest Table

In this episode of 'The Biggest Table,' I welcome Reverend Dr. Christopher Carter to discuss the intricate connections between food, identity, and justice. Dr. Carter, an expert in black, womanist, and environmental ethics, shares insights from his upbringing in Michigan, where food insecurity during his childhood shaped his understanding of food's importance. We delve into Dr. Carter's book, 'The Spirit of Soul Food,' which explores ancestral food traditions and the concept of black veganism. Highlighting the intersectionality of race, food, and non-human animals, Dr. Carter argues for ethical eating practices that honor sacred worth and oppose oppressive systems like factory farming. He emphasizes the importance of context-specific and agent-specific actions in aligning one's diet with ethical and spiritual values. Dr. Carter also calls for systemic changes and personal compassion in the pursuit of justice for both human and non-human communities.Rev. Dr. Christopher Carter's research, teaching, and activist interests are in Black, Womanist, and Environmental ethics, with a particular focus on race, food, and nonhuman animals. His publications include “Race, Animals, as a New Vision of the Beloved Community” in Animals and Religion (Routledge, 2024), The Spirit of Soul Food (University of Illinois Press, December 2021), and “Blood in the Soil: The Racial, Racist, and Religious Dimensions of Environmentalism” in The Bloomsbury Handbook on Religion and Nature (Bloomsbury, 2018). In them, he explores the intersectional oppressions experienced by people of color, non-human nature, and animals. Currently, he is an Associate Professor of Theology, Ecology, and Race at Methodist Theological School in Ohio, Lead Pastor of The Loft at Westwood United Methodist Church, and he is also on the board of directors of Farm Forward, an anti-factory farming non-profit. He is married to Dr. Gabrielle Carter, a small animal veterinary oncologist, and while their son Isaiah is not a doctor of any sort, he definitely believes he is more intelligent than his parents.Christopher Carter's websiteProgressive Christian Podcast on Apple PodcastsThis episode of the Biggest Table is brought to you in part by Wild Goose Coffee. In case you were wondering, “hymnody” is an actual word and we didn't make it up. It simply means the singing or composition of hymns, religious songs or poems of praise to God. And today's guest has a lot to say about hymns.  Ted Campbell is the Albert C. Outlet Professor of Wesley Studies at Perkins School of Theology at Southern Methodist University. He has served as a United Methodist pastor and has taught at the Methodist Theological School in Ohio, Duke Divinity School, and Wesley Theological Seminary. He is the author of many books, including Wesleyan Beliefs, The Gospel of Christian Tradition, and most recently A Core Methodist Hymnal, which is more like a devotional and less like a traditional hymnal.Resources:Learn more about Ted at his website, tedcampbell.comBuy A Core Methodist Hymnal

What if embracing veganism could also be an act of solidarity with marginalized communities? In this episode, Dr. Christopher Carter guides us through the multifaceted intersections of veganism, race, and spirituality. Christopher shares a deeply personal narrative that connects their transformative path to veganism with their family's historical struggles, drawing powerful parallels between the exploitation of migrant farm workers today and the harsh realities of the Jim Crow South. As we explore these connections, we challenge listeners to rethink ethical eating as a profound statement of unity and resistance against systemic injustices. We further untangle the complex threads linking cultural identity and dietary choices, shedding light on how historical diets have been manipulated to signify sophistication and power. Through engaging stories of resilience and adaptability, we discover the rich tapestry of vegan soul food and its ability to nourish both body and heritage. Inspired by the work of earlier trailblazers, our conversation emphasizes that aligning one's cultural identity with vegan values doesn't mean losing touch with one's roots but rather finding innovative ways to celebrate them. The episode also takes a deep dive into the radical compassion inherent in Christianity, questioning if teachings can inspire a modern spiritual path of inclusivity and justice. By drawing on the legacies of Cesar Chavez and Martin Luther King, we discuss how religions can be reclaimed from oppressive narratives to create communities grounded in empathy and understanding. This discussion invites listeners to embrace personal growth, self-care, and community engagement, all while reflecting on the interconnectedness of life through the lens of radical veganism. Guest Bio: Rev. Dr. Christopher Carter's teaching, research, and activist interests are in Black, Womanist, and Environmental ethics, with a particular focus on race, food, and nonhuman animals. He is the co-creator of Racial Resilience, an anti-racism and anti-bias program that utilizes the combined insights of contemplative practices and critical race theories. His academic publications include “Blood in the Soil: The Racial, Racist, and Religious Dimensions of Environmentalism” in The Bloomsbury Handbook on Religion and Nature (Bloomsbury, 2018), The Spirit of Soul Food (University of Illinois Press, December 2021), and “Race, Animals, and a New Vision of the Beloved Community” in Animals and Religion (Routledge, 2024). Currently, he is an Associate Professor of Theology, Race, and Ecology at the Methodist Theological School of Ohio, a Faith in Food Fellow at Farm Forward, and lead pastor of The Loft at Westwood UMC, in Westwood California. In the last century, archaeologists of the Highlands Settlements north of Jerusalem uncovered evidence that reshapes traditional understandings of Israelite history and the Bible. This new history remains largely untold outside of specialized archeological and biblical studies contexts. In her new book, Undoing Conquest, Kate Common, Assistant Professor in Public and Practical Theology at the Methodist Theological School in Ohio, recovers the material evidence that challenges the theological imagination of conquest that has permeated Christianity.By examining how biblical conquest narratives shaped Christian ideology, Undoing Conquest offers ways to incorporate the story the Highlands Settlements reveal into the life of the church to repair the harms of settler-colonialism and creating a more just future.Undoing Conquest is available at 25% off through 31 March 2024 Get your copy today, visit https://maryknoll.link/e7214f

Dr. Linda Mercadante is a Distinguished Research Professor, Emerita, Methodist Theological School in Ohio. She is the founder of HealthyBeliefs – HealthySpirit, a member of the Scioto Valley Presbytery, and an active participant in many professional groups including The American Academy of Religion and The Workgroup on Constructive Theology. She is a prolific author of five books and more than 100 articles. She lectures internationally, conducts seminars for a wide variety of audiences, and teaches on a broad range of topics including: the spiritual but not religious movement, addiction recovery, gender and theology, faith and film, and spiritual memoir writing. Her most recent book was selected as among “The Best of the Best Spiritual Books of the Year” by Spirituality & Practice. She was named a Luce Scholar for her work examining the beliefs and practices of today's “Spiritual but not Religious.”  (“Untethered Belief, Unfettered Practice: Thinking Theologically about ‘Spiritual but not Religious')” The coveted Henry Luce III Fellowship in Theology is awarded to only six scholars per year throughout the entire U.S. and Canada. The resulting book, Belief without Borders: Inside the Minds of the Spiritual but not Religious, (Oxford Univ. Pr.) has been featured on NBCs The Today Show, in The New York Times, and in many other media outlets. Other works include Victims & Sinners: Spiritual Roots of Addiction and Recovery, exploring the theology inherent in the 12 Step method. In addition, she describes her journey from hybrid to atheist to SBNR to Christian theologian in a spiritual autobiography, Bloomfield Avenue: A Jewish-Catholic Jersey Girl's Spiritual Journey.  Her work focuses on the intersection of theology and culture, including such themes as addiction recovery, faith and film, trauma, and the "spiritual but not religious" (SBNR) movement.  Her work is both theological and interdisciplinary -- primarily using resources from sociology, psychology, and media studies -- to look at how culture, belief and behavior interact. Dr. Mercadante knows first-hand how it feels to live without a clear spiritual identity. Born into an immigrant, working class, mixed ethnic, non-religious household in the rough urban environment of Newark, NJ, she experienced the uncertainty that comes from not having a spiritual home. She went through years of searching, travel, and exploration in her quest for a spiritual identity. In the process, she earned a Ph.D. in theology from Princeton, became ordained, and found a vocation in seminary teaching. She is dedicated to helping others find a spiritual identity that can allow their spirits to come home. Dr. Linda Mercadante a Distinguished Research Professor, Emerita, Methodist Theological School in Ohio. and founder of HealthyBeliefs discussed her journey from being "spiritual but not religious" to becoming a scholar of religion. She argues for more research and understanding into the growing numbers of Americans identifying as such. In her book, "Beliefs without Borders: Inside the Minds of the Spiritual But Not Religious," Mercadante shares her research findings from a listening tour across the US, Canada, Mexico, and beyond. She discovered that while sociologically, people identifying as “spiritual but not religious” are quite different, they share many common beliefs — including rejecting the word "God" while still believing in something bigger than themselves. We conclude our season on Jacob's Bones (the core truths, values and practices to carry forward in the new church) in the wilderness where identity and purpose can become clear. Bishop Palmer reflects on the gifts of this wilderness time in the church and through his no-nonsense, compelling way, challenges the church to move beyond navel-gazing to face out to the world. This inspired and hope-filled conversation invites us to consider what it really means to be the church today. Bishop Palmer embodies the passion and possibility of the church's bold witness for the present and future church. What will be your bold witness for the church?   In this conversation:  Lisa and Gil answer the question: “What do you hope is true about the church 20-30 years from now?” (01:29) Bishop Palmer reflects on the gifts of wilderness (09:43) What Bishop Palmer means when he says the church “campaigned to be chaplains of the middle class” (16:34) Helping the church face out to the world (22:41) “We overvalued being respected and being nice” (32:22) Bishop Palmer talks racism, mass incarceration, poverty (37:44) What Bishop Palmer hopes is true about the church in 20-30 years (52:19)   QUOTES “The fact that there are many natural born leaders that are incarcerated, how are we tapping that resource to learn more about leadership? And how are we making room for them in the pew, in the life of the church?” -Bishop Gregory Palmer [50:16] “I believe the Gospel is large enough to have whether you want to say multiple angles of view or a wide angle of view.” -Bishop Gregory Palmer [55:26]   Bishop Gregory Palmer's bio Bishop Palmer is the Resident Bishop of the West Ohio Conference of The United Methodist Church. Born and reared in Philadelphia, Bishop Gregory Vaughn Palmer is a “child of the church,” the son of a retired United Methodist pastor and a schoolteacher in the Philadelphia Public School system. A graduate of Duke University Divinity School, Palmer was ordained a deacon in 1977. In 1981, he was elected to full membership and ordained an elder. Palmer also served as superintendent. He was elected to the episcopacy in 2000. He has served as president of the General Board of Higher Education and Ministry and president of the Council of Bishops and he is currently a member of the Standing Committee on Central Conference Matters and chair of the Comprehensive Africa Plan. He also is a board member of several organizations, including The United Methodist Publishing House, Methodist Theological School in Ohio, United Theological Seminary and OhioHealth. When Christopher Austin asked to interview me for GrassRoot Ohio, I said YES to to my fellow actor/activist friend - this is Chris' show & I'm in the hot seat! Shout out to Curtain Players Performance - The Laramie Project! Carolyn Harding with Christopher Austin, fellow artist/activist and colleague. Christopher Austin graduated from Otterbein University with a major in Theatre and received his Master's Degree in Pastoral and Professional Counseling from Methodist Theological School. He has received awards for his theatrical performances and completed his first feature film “Things Are Tough All Over,” directed by local film maker Chris Bournea. Christopher has worked in the field of counseling and social work for 6 years and has received recognition and awards for his work in the field. He is active in the Columbus community with the goal helping people find their voice of empowerment through the arts, volunteering in religious and community outreach, and social activism. In June, 2020, I interviewed Chris on GrassRoot Ohio. His petition to take down the Christopher Columbus statue in front of the Columbus City Hall, was the straw that broke the camels back, after years of activists' work to bring this symbol of trauma down. But I first got to know Chris from our other shared world - the Arts. In November, 2012, we were in a theatrical production of To Kill a Mockingbird, directed by Mark Mann. Chris played the role of Tom Robbins, the man falsely accused and convicted of rape by a white woman. I played Ms. Stephanie, the nosey neighbor of Atticus Finch- white, privileged, complicit, racist. In July, 2019, Chris was cast as the lead character in “Things are Tough All Over”, an independent feature film by Chris Bournea, and I was cast as the school principal, this time an ally. Two months ago Chris asked me if he could interview me for GrassRoot Ohio. I was taken back, a bit flummoxed, with everything going on in our world…. But I said yes to Chris and so here we are. This is Christopher Austins' show, and I'm in the hot seat. "This is not a thing I have sought, But it has come across my path and I have seized it. " -- Annie Dilliard Annie Dilliard's words point to the place where Phyllis Cole-Dai's most significant projects begin -- in that electric intersection where serendipity, sincerity and steadfast resolve collide.  On Ash Wednesday of 1999, Phyllis Cole-Dai walked out of her home in Columbus, Ohio with a friend. The two of them carried no money with them and would spend the next 47 days -- of Lent and Holy Week -- living on the streets. "We didn't go out to find answers to questions or to search out solutions to problems. We didn't go out to save anyone or to hand out donations of food and blankets. We went out for one primary reason: to be as present as possible to everyone we met - homeless person, volunteer, University president, cop."  The Emptiness of Our Hands is a moving memoir of those 47 days, co-authored by Phyllis. It explores the great divide between the housed and the homeless-- and how being without a real home can ravage the human spirit. As a writer and editor Phyllis has always written across the divides that separate us from ourselves and one another. Through her writing she seeks deeper understanding, and the possibility of healing -- for herself and readers. Her work spans multiple genres.  Beneath the Same Stars is a historical novel set during the U.S.-Dakota War of 1862. In it Phyllis explores the vast divides between settlers and the indigenous people of this land in ways that bear deep relevance to our troubled times. Poetry of Presence: An Anthology of Mindfulness Poetry, co-edited by Phyllis, explores the divides between mind and body, self and other. In its pages, contemporary poets such as Joy Harjo, Li-Young Lee, Derek Walcott and Naomi Shihab Nye rub shoulders with beloved poets of the past, including Rumi and Li Po. The book evolved out of a popular blog titled "A Year of Being Here", that Phyllis created in 2013. For three consecutive years she posted  a daily 'mindfulness poem' along with an accompanying art piece, drawing in readers from across the world with her thoughtful curation.   Her latest book is For the Sake of One We Love and Are Losing: A Meditative Poem & Journal. Written in the form of a meditative poem, the book seeks to bridge the poignant gap between the living and those who are dying, or have passed. Published last year as the world grappled with a pandemic that has continued to drastically redefine our reality and claim lives, Phyllis' words have served as a tender, steadying hand for many in pain and grief. When she lost her own father recently to COVID-19, her own words would return to her as deep medicine (along with blessings, poems, healing images and more) from her many well-wishers and readers. In mid-March, 2020, in response to the pandemic, Phyllis created Staying Power -- a free virtual care package delivered to subscribers every Sunday that weaves together offerings of personal stories, meditations, poetry, music, and other resources -- all with the simple intention of helping people weather the challenges of these times with 'a clear mind, sound body and generous spirit.' Several of her stories have been syndicated on DailyGood, including, "I Am One of Everybody," the heart-warming story of Phyllis's 'signature' red coat, that has now been autographed by hundreds of strangers, and that serves as unique reminder of our shared hunger to simply belong. Born in 1962 in the farming community of Mt. Blanchard, Ohio, Phyllis eventually graduated with a Bachelor of Arts (English, 1984) from Goshen College; a Master of Theological Studies (1987) from the Methodist Theological School; and a Master of Arts (English, 1993) from The Ohio State University. She lives with her scientist-husband, teenage son, and two cats in a 130-year-old house in Brookings, South Dakota, also the traditional homeland of the “Seven Council Fires” of the Dakota, Nakota and Lakota confederacy (more commonly called the Great Sioux Nation).  Join us in conversation with a writer whose sincerity, courage and compassion speak directly to the call of our times.

In this episode, I want to share with you two essays I wrote.  Both essays are admission essays for my application to start a Doctor of Ministry program at Methodist Theological School in Ohio, the same seminary where I earned my Master of Divinity.  The first essay charts my professional growth since graduating from seminary and the second essay answers the question of what my specialization of choice is and what my goals are in starting a Doctor of Ministry program.  I share this to give perspective to those who might not know much about the Independent Sacramental Movement and to share my story as I am living it; the story of one cog in the machine that keeps the Independent Sacramental Movement in motion.  The episode title, "Do we need more Demons" is a play on words, as D.Min (or Doctor of Ministry) is sometimes jokingly referred to as "Demon" and how "Jesus cast out the "D.Mins."

Elizabeth Shulman, in her own words:I've been in ministry for 27 years, first as a pastor then as a healthcare chaplain. My doctoral research was on the experience of marriage for spouses of dementia patients, and out of that research came Sanctuary in the Midst of Alzheimer's.  I currently train churches to become a resource in their community for dementia caregivers. My favorite thing is to help dementia caregivers find meaning and a sense of peace in their experience; believe me, it can be found! I am a graduate of United Theological Seminary (D.Min.), The Methodist Theological School in Ohio (M.Div.) and Ohio Northern University (B.A. Education). I have written several devotions for Guideposts Magazine's Strength and Grace, and I am hoping to soon publish an updated version of my book which will be re-titled, Sanctuary in the Midst of Alzheimer's: A Ministry for Families Facing Dementia. This new version includes an additional 4-week section for children caring for a parent.

Professor John Kampen of Methodist Theological School in Ohio and Hebrew Union College shares his considerable expertise on the Dead Sea Scrolls and discusses the many types of writing preserved within these amazing artifacts. He explains that the scrolls contain, in addition to many fragments of Biblical books, many pseudo-Biblical writings, original compositions, and a wide array of texts in many genres, a great number of which have been defined only through the discovery and study of the Dead Sea Scrolls themselves. Learn firsthand what’s in many of the scrolls, why this matters, and why the study of the scrolls is so difficult even today. Professor Kampen is the author of Wisdom Literature, a commentary on all of the wisdom texts in the Qumran corpus. Written and performed by Dr. John Kampen (Methodist Theological School in Ohio and Hebrew Union College); featuring Sarah Lima; produced by Christian Cloke and Sarah Lima; featuring Vivaldi's Gloria; recording and editing by R. Aaron Allen Productions.
