Perched on an island near the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, California, is a prison that claimed to be impervious to escapes: Alcatraz Federal Prison. Al Capone, George "Machine Gun" Kelly, Robert "Birdman" Stroud, James “Whitey” Bulger, and Alvin “Creepy Karpis” Karpowicz all passed through its walls. Even though it was believed to be a sealed-off, safe prison to contain the nation's most dangerous inmates, many tried to leave before their time was up. Some prisoners took their fate into their own hands, planning to escape or die trying. Hello listeners! Welcome to a new year of true crime cases! We are so happy to have you joining us! This week we are talking about the wrongful conviction of Jerry Hobbs. If you listened to our Juan Rivera episode, you might hear some familiar names. Jerry Hobbs was accused of killing his daughter and her friend in 2005. A grueling interrogation involving physical violence and manipulation ended with a false confession. It would not be until DNA testing found the real killer that justice would actually be served. Welcome back! This week we wanted to bring you something a little different so we are discussing the Antwerp Diamond Heist. This case is absolutely insane and definitely seems straight out of an action movie. The Antwerp Diamond Heist is known as one of the largest diamond heists in history, with about $100 million worth of valuables stolen right out from under one of the most guarded diamond locations in the world. With the vault 2 stories underground and protected by 10 layers of security, any reasonably-minded person would consider this robbery daunting and impossible. Leonardo Notarbartolo and his group of criminals thought otherwise. They planned everything down to the T over the course of a few years. With the assistance of The Monster, The Genius, The King of Keys, and Speedy, Leonardo was able to fulfill his plan of robbing the Antwerp Diamond Center... and they almost got away with it, too. Tells us what you think of this case and if we should cover more heists in the future! "Serial only told part of the story… In early 2000, Adnan Syed was convicted and sentenced to life plus thirty years for the murder of his ex-girlfriend Hae Min Lee, a high school senior in Baltimore, Maryland. Syed has maintained his innocence, and Rabia Chaudry, a family friend, has always believed him. By 2013, after almost all appeals had been exhausted, Rabia contacted Sarah Koenig, a producer at This American Life, in hopes of finding a journalist who could shed light on Adnan's story. In 2014, Koenig's investigation turned into Serial, a Peabody Award-winning podcast with more than 500 million international listenersBut Serial did not tell the whole story. In this compelling narrative, Rabia Chaudry presents new key evidence that she maintains dismantles the State's case: a potential new suspect, forensics indicating Hae was killed and kept somewhere for almost half a day, and documentation withheld by the State that destroys the cell phone evidence -- among many other points -- and she shows how fans of Serial joined a crowd-sourced investigation into a case riddled with errors and strange twists. Adnan's Story also shares Adnan's life in prison, and weaves in his personal reflections, including never-before-seen letters. Chaudry, who is committed to exonerating Adnan, makes it clear that justice is yet to be achieved in this much examined case." If you have been into true crime podcasts for awhile you have probably heard Serial. Serial rocketed true crime podcasts into the mainstream and brought much needed attention to Adnan Syed's case but it left a lot out. In Rabia's book, she covers a lot of information that has come out on this case during and since Serial. Despite the tremendous effort and mountain of evidence of misconduct and nefarious actions Adnan remains in prison. Hey listeners! We are bringing you a bit of a different episode today. Having both worked in the field of marine biology, we wanted to bring some light to a problem that is incredibly pervasive in the fishing industries. Women often face hardships breaking into scientific fields but that is escalated when they are in male-dominated situations and isolated. This week we are taking you to the historic and scenic Colonial Parkway in Virginia. Four couples were murdered along or near this parkway in the 1980s. Many more victims have been speculated as being killed by the same evil lurking the area. Lots of suspects came and went but these murders remain a mystery. Who do you think ended the lives of all of these people? Was a serial roaming southeastern Virginia or were multiple people to blame? SPOILERS AHEAD! "It isn't paranoia if it's really happening . . . "Anna Fox lives alone—a recluse in her New York City home, unable to venture outside. She spends her day drinking wine (maybe too much), watching old movies, recalling happier times . . . and spying on her neighbors. "Then the Russells move into the house across the way: a father, a mother, their teenage son. The perfect family. But when Anna, gazing out her window one night, sees something she shouldn't, her world begins to crumble—and its shocking secrets are laid bare. "What is real? What is imagined? Who is in danger? Who is in control? In this diabolically gripping thriller, no one—and nothing—is what it seems." Hey listeners! Welcome back! We all watched the viral docuseries, Tiger King, and we all came out with different opinions, ideas, and speculations on insane scenarios presented to viewers. The internet started swarming with theories about the nitty gritty details of Don Lewis' disappearance, which mostly concluded that Carole Baskin was guilty of murdering her husband and putting his body through a meat grinder. We decided to dive into the case further than the surface details provided by the documentary. Our digging brought an uproar of information regarding various aspects of Don Lewis' life. Is Carole Baskin really guilty or innocent? If not, who is to blame? Minor Avenue in Hamilton Ohio seemed like a quaint street with young families. Unfortunately, two tragedies 20 years apart would turn this street upside down. First, a young man suddenly kills his entire family on Easter then a young mother is killed by her boyfriend. These crimes shook the small community and left many to wonder how so much heartbreak could happen on one street. Thank you for tuning in once again! This month we are talking about Find Her by Lisa Gardner and it was such a good one! Warren is called to the scene of a crime—a dead man and the bound, naked woman who killed him—she learns that Flora has tangled with three other suspects since her return to society. Lauren McCluskey was a young University of Utah student in her prime. She was a gifted and dedicated athlete, a good student, a performer, and a caring friend and daughter. When she met Shaun Fields after a fun night out she could never have known the horror that awaited her. Shaun Fields was actually Melvin Rowland, a sex offender 16 years older than Lauren. Although Lauren and her friends tried to get help from the university and the police, Lauren was dismissed and faced a nightmare far too many women have to endure. Thank you for tuning back into the Abyss Book Club! We are talking about the true crime book Iceman: Confessions of a Mafia Contract Killer by Philip Carlo. We will discuss the wild life of Richard Kuklinski from his account of his life as a hitman. Synopsis from Amazon: "Philip Carlo's The Ice Man spent over six weeks on the New York Times Bestseller List. Top Mob Hitman. Devoted Family Man. Doting Father. For thirty years, Richard "The Iceman" Kuklinski led a shocking double life, becoming the most notorious professional assassin in American history while happily hosting neighborhood barbecues in suburban New Jersey. Richard Kuklinski was Sammy the Bull Gravano's partner in the killing of Paul Castellano, then head of the Gambino crime family, at Sparks Steakhouse. Mob boss John Gotti hired him to torture and kill the neighbor who accidentally ran over his child. For an additional price, Kuklinski would make his victims suffer; he conducted this sadistic business with coldhearted intensity and shocking efficiency, never disappointing his customers. By his own estimate, he killed over two hundred men, taking enormous pride in his variety and ferocity of technique. This trail of murder lasted over thirty years and took Kuklinski all over America and to the far corners of the earth, Brazil, Africa, and Europe. Along the way, he married, had three children, and put them through Catholic school. His daughter's medical condition meant regular stays in children's hospitals, where Kuklinski was remembered, not as a gangster, but as an affectionate father, extremely kind to children. Each Christmas found the Kuklinski home festooned in colorful lights; each summer was a succession of block parties. His family never suspected a thing." They thought he just had a dark sense of humor but sometimes wondered if he was the kind of person to be watchful of. Although his parents tried to help him, Tyler kept getting into trouble. Then one night he threw a huge house party with drinking, games, and drugs abound. When partygoers asked where his parents were, Tyler responded with varying accounts. When he confides in his best friend about doing something bad, he is ultimately turned in. What caused Tyler Hadley to go from a well-mannered child to a murderer remains a mystery. Juan Rivera was wrongfully convicted of the murder of 11-year-old Holly Staker when he was 20 years old. Despite obviously being in a compromised mental state and having no physical connection to the crime, police spent 4 days intensely. interrogating him until he finally told them what they wanted to hear. Based on this coerced confession, Juan was convicted three times. Each conviction was later overturned based on many inconsistencies and incidence of misconduct. Wrongful convictions are pervasive in the United States. Many interrogation and investigative techniques lead to this. Wrongful convictions can come from coerced confessions, false eye witness testimony, evidence tampering, outdated forensic techniques, and police misconduct among other things. Well over 2000 prisoners have been exonerated since 1989. New DNA technology is helping to clear the names of innocent people but the work does not stop there. There are many innocence projects across the US and Canada so be sure to check out the organizations in your communities fighting for justice for the wrongfully convicted!
