When Rabia Chaudry's family moved from Pakistan to the U.S., her parents fully embraced the processed foods lining the grocery store aisles. But as the author and attorney got older, she began to associate eating with shame and secrecy. Her new memoir, Fatty Fatty Boom Boom, recounts how her outlook on food changed as she understood her own mom's eating patterns. Dr. Hinna Chaudhry wanted to be a dentist since she was nine years old. She was accepted into a 7 year accelerated BA/DMD program at Rutgers university in Newark NJ. As she gained weight throughout her childhood, family members teased her, questioned whether she'd ever marry and gave her the nickname “Fatty Fatty Boom Boom.” We'll talk to Chaudry about her new memoir and how food and family have shaped her, both metaphorically and literally. When Rabia Chaudry's family moved from Pakistan to the U.S., her parents fully embraced the processed foods lining the grocery store aisles. But as the author and attorney got older, she began to associate eating with shame and secrecy. Her new memoir, Fatty Fatty Boom Boom, recounts how her outlook on food changed as she understood her own mom's eating patterns. In this episode, Chaudry tells NPR's Ayesha Rascoe how she eventually started healing – so much so that she reclaimed her childhood nickname for the title of her book.

Attorney, advocate, and podcaster Rabia Chaudry is the author of the New York Times bestseller Adnan's Story, a true-crime analysis into the 2000 conviction of a young Baltimorean for the murder of his ex-girlfriend. Also the executive producer of The Case Against Adnan Syed, the HBO documentary series based on the book, Chaudry is the co-host and co-producer of the popular podcasts Undisclosed, The 45th, and The Hidden Djinn. In addition to earning fellowships from the Aspen Institute, the Truman National Security Project, and the Shalom Hartman Institute, she is the founder and president of the Safe Nation Collaborative, an organization that promotes education about the Islamic faith. Earlier this week, Adnan Syed, the subject of the hit 2014 podcast 'Serial, walked free after a judge ruled that there were errors in the State of Maryland's investigation of his case. In 2000, at age 17, Syed was convicted for the murder of Hae Min Lee, his high school ex-girlfriend, back in 2000. The lasting impact of Serial is hard to overstate. The podcast reached millions of listeners around the world, inspiring legions of internet sleuths to dig into the evidence of the case themselves and creating the template for a new genre of serialized, true-crime podcasts.  Rabia Chaudry, an attorney, criminal justice reform advocate, and friend of Syed, was the person who originally brought Syed's story to Sarah Koenig, the host and reporter of Serial who was then working at WBEZ's This American Life. Chaudry was eager for media attention on the flaws in the state of Maryland's investigation of Lee's murder, but the media phenomenon that Serial would become far surpassed anything she could have predicted. Chaudry subsequently launched her own podcast, Undisclosed, and she executive produced a 2019 documentary for HBO, "The Case Against Adnan Syed." In this in-depth conversation with Brooke Gladstone, Chaudry talks about her decades-long fight to free Syed, the limits of Serial, and how she's harnessed the power of podcasting to exonerate people who have been falsely accused.
