In Alafair Burke's new thriller, “The Note,” three friends are vacationing together in the Hamptons when they have an unpleasant run-in with a couple of strangers and decide to exact drunken, petty revenge. But the prank they pull — a note reading “He's cheating on you” — snowballs, eventually embroiling them in a missing-persons investigation and forcing each woman to wonder what dark secrets her friends are hiding.Burke joins host Gilbert Cruz and talks about how she came up with the idea for “The Note,” and how she goes about writing her books in general.“I always have a few ideas, just, like the setup in my head,” she says. “And then I also have characters in my head. They're not aligned together initially. I might just be thinking about a character who's interesting to me for various reasons. It might be the back story that's interesting, or it might be a personality trait that's interesting. And then I'll have a setup, like, three women go on vacation and stir up some nonsense that gets them in trouble. And for me, when I can start writing is when — it's almost like matchmaking: Oh, OK, if I take that character that I've been thinking about with that back story and that set of anxieties and I put her in this scenario, that's going to get interesting.” Unlock full access to New York Times podcasts and explore everything from politics to pop culture. Alafair Burke: Vesper Martini (2 ounces gin, 3/4 ounce vodka, 1/2 ounce Lillet Blanc)Alafair reveals the haunting impressions of growing up in Kansas during the active period of the BTK serial killer and how that time influenced her path to practicing law and writing crime novels, how she applies her experience as a DA to the pages of her crime thrillers, the differences between writing the novel and writing for film and TV, how she might pick the perfect writers' room, how her very successful novelist father feels about her very successful novelist career (and which movie stars her father resembles), and offers a great piece of advice at the end of the show (and at the end of the martini).

The Note by Alafair Burke. Three friends with complicated histories and very different personalities decide to have a getaway catch up in the Hamptons and are looking forward to a weekend of drinking, eating and good times as an antidote to the pressures of their regular lives. They're headed out for dinner but when a beautiful looking couple in another car steals the parking space they were patiently waiting for, they get riled up and after a night enjoying far too much alcohol one of them plays a prank on the occupants of that car. Turns out it's not so funny – it all goes horribly wrong and when the police turn up, their pasts come back to haunt them. The Wedding Party by Rebecca Heath. A group of old friends. A grieving mother. A lying bride. Adele and Jason are childhood sweethearts and their wedding day on the sunny Australian coast is a chance to reunite and celebrate with friends and family. But Adele isn't telling the truth about her relationship, and some of the wedding party – still reeling from a tragic death in the group a decade before – hold secrets of their own. What happened on the jetty all those years ago was an accident, everyone agrees. Or do they? This is told from various points of view, all of which make it clear – there's trouble in paradise. How did a bizarre confession derail the investigation into the first murder committed by Keith Hunter Jesperson, the notorious “Happy Face Killer,” and allow him to remain on the loose, killing at least seven more women? A new two-hour “20/20” reports on how after authorities discovered the body of Taunja Bennett in the Columbia Gorge in 1990, 57-year-old Laverne Pavlinac confessed to the police that she took part in the crime. She provided convincing evidence that implicated her and her boyfriend, 39-year-old John Sosnovske, in the murder, and they were convicted and sentenced to life in prison. In a shocking twist, Pavlinac's confession turned out to be false in an attempt to escape what she described as an abusive relationship with Sosnovske. With reporting by “Nightline” co-anchor Juju Chang, “20/20” dives into how Pavlinac was able to dupe police, featuring audio from the couple's confessions and police interviews, and from the hidden microphone installed in Pavlinac's apartment when she tried to convince Sosnovske that he was involved in the murder. The two-hour program features an exclusive interview with Melissa Gavin, a friend of Julie Winningham, the last person Jesperson killed before his arrest; and new interviews with John Ingram, lead detective who investigated Bennett's murder; Jim McIntyre, prosecutor for Pavlinac and Sosnovske's cases; Darlene Carpenter and Bonnie McAlpine, Pavlinac's daughters; Michelle White, Bennett's sister; Melissa Moore, Jesperson's daughter; and Alafair Burke, bestselling author and former prosecutor who based her first novel on the case. The program also features Chang's interview with Jesperson from the ABC News archives and gives an inside look at how police ultimately tracked Jesperson down.  Learn more about your ad choices. Hap Cawood was for many years the editor of the editorial pages for the Dayton Daily News. Hap is the author of the novel "The Miler." His daughter Shuly is a prolific writer. Shuly writes poetry, prose, fiction, non-fiction, essays, short stories, and memoir. Over the years that I have hosted the program I have interviewed fathers and daughters but never at the same time. For example, James Lee Burke has made many appearances on the show. His daughter Alafair Burke has too. I would love to interview them together. I doubt that will ever happen though. When I had the chance to have Hap and Shuly together in the studio I knew that it could be something special. I surprised them when I suggested that perhaps they might want to interview one another. I did not give them any advance warning about my plans. Even so, they still agreed to do it. So that's what we did!

As, thankfully, my recent life/med stress ended early (quick - where's a piece of wood to knock on?), that means our temporary hiatus is ending a week early too! Editing this lively episode yesterday made me laugh multiple times. I figured that right now laughter is something we all could use in this grim world as of late so I wanted to deliver this conversation to you ASAP to hopefully brighten your day. Kind, witty, and wildly gifted, my good friend Nikki Dolson is a prolific crime writer whose work has been published in such well-respected places as Shotgun Honey, Tough, ThugLit, and Bartleby Snopes. The author of what she affectionately calls "a novelish thing" - the book All Things Violent - Nikki has also released a short story collection entitled Love and Other Criminal Behavior. And last fall, one of her outstanding pieces appeared in the prestigious Best American Mystery and Suspense Stories anthology of 2021, edited by Alafair Burke and Steph Cha. A delightful film buff who has excellent taste in movies (and men!), and is also quite the TV reenactor and movie trivia game player, I always have a ball talking to Nikki. And this witty, candid, free-flowing conversation, which covers women in the crime films The Last Seduction, Bound, The Long Kiss Goodnight, Widows, and I'm Your Woman (plus Michael Mann's Thief and Nicolas Winding Refn's Drive) was no exception to that rule. In fact, my favorite thing about this episode is that because Nikki is one of my very best friends, you're getting a different side of both of us than you would in other episodes, and you're hearing us delve into something we're truly, truly passionate about. I did a lot of photo manipulation, and just a whole bunch of handcrafting of all kinds.” How did she get involved in the audio world? “My daughter and I had a long commute for many years, and we went through a million audiobooks.” She also read aloud to her daughter, until it dawned on her: “I would love to do that.” She didn't think her voice would be one that anyone would want to hear, but she really wanted to try her hand at narration. Authors on the Air host Pam Stack welcomes international best-selling author Alafair Burke to the studio. About my guest: Alafair Burke is the New York Times and internationally bestselling author of sixteen novels. Her most recent psychological thriller, THE WIFE, has been praised as "sneaky" , "schemey", "twisty" , and "tantalizing". THE WIFE was selected as a best-of-the-month pick by Amazon and others. It is being adapted as a feature film, with Alafair writing the screenplay. About the book: This is a stunning domestic thriller in which a woman must make the impossible choice between defending her husband and saving herself. When Angela met Jason Powell while catering a dinner party in East Hampton, she assumed their romance would be a short-lived fling, like so many relationships between locals and summer visitors. To her surprise, Jason, a brilliant economics professor at NYU, had other plans, and they married the following summer. She and her son were finally able to move out of her mother’s home to Manhattan, where no one knew about her tragic past. Six years later, thanks to a bestselling book and a growing media career, Jason has become a cultural lightning rod, placing Angela near the spotlight she worked so carefully to avoid. When a college intern makes an accusation against Jason, and another woman, Kerry Lynch, comes forward with an even more troubling allegation, their perfect life begins to unravel. Jason insists he is innocent, and Angela believes him. But when Kerry disappears, Angela is forced to take a closer look—at both the man she married and the women she chose not to believe.
