In this episode, Alison welcomes Courtney Koenig, a dynamic coach who has recently rebranded her business under the theme "The ROI of Peace." With the start of a new year, their conversation delves deep into the concept of human design, a growing trend among entrepreneurs and those seeking personal growth. They explore how human design isn't just a fad; it offers valuable insights into how individuals can harness their innate strengths for better alignment in their personal and professional lives.Courtney shares her journey toward the rebranding of her podcast and coaching practice, emphasizing that true success should be measured by the amount of peace we cultivate rather than just traditional markers like income or productivity. She articulates that many of us overlook the vital importance of inner peace in evaluating the health of our lives and businesses.Alison and Courtney dive into the science of human design, unraveling its complexities and how it connects to our personal identities. Courtney enlightens listeners on what human design entails, how it resembles personality tests like the Enneagram, but with greater depth and specifics tied to one's birth details. She addresses the skepticism that surrounds it and shares insights drawn from her experiences, providing evidence of its accuracy and usefulness. They also recognize the challenges that modern entrepreneurs face, from external societal pressures to the internal struggles of self-doubt and burnout. Courtney offers practical advice about creating pockets of peace in our daily lives through mindfulness and small, intentional practices rather than overwhelming elaborations. This encouragement to treat peace as an investment rather than an occasional luxury forms a recurrent theme in our dialogue.Courtney emphasizes how important it is not to let external chaos dictate our internal peace. She reminds us that we possess the power to choose our reactions and states of mind, regardless of external circumstances. Her personal anecdotes, including coping with MS and harnessing her skills to remain positive, highlight the universal nature of our struggles and the potential for inner resilience and growth. To wrap up the episode, Courtney shares her easy-to-implement tips for evaluating our daily lives and incorporating practices that promote a sense of peace and fulfillment. She encourages creating a “peace list,” developed from personal revelations about what rejuvenates and uplifts us. This list becomes a foundational tool for navigating life's ups and downs with grace and intention.HIGHLIGHTS:2:49 Understanding Human Design6:13 The Science Behind Human Design8:35 The Power of Self-Awareness15:00 Tools for Peace16:36 Navigating Life's Challenges17:54 Finding Your Peace Practices20:38 Creating Consistent Peace26:16 The Return on Investment of Peace31:52 Believing in Possibilities33:05 Connecting with Communityconnect with Courtney:website: https://roiofpeace.comHuman Design chart: https://roiofpeace.com/humandesignchartSPONSOR:Cellev8Discount code: THEALISONK2024 ALISON'S LINKS:Website |

David Cronenberg's The Fly (1986) stars Jeff Goldblum as Seth Brundle, a brilliant scientist who creates a teleportation process using telepods. Geena Davis, who was Goldblum's real-life partner during the filming, plays the ambitious journalist Veronica who falls in love with Brundle. Coming in at approximately an hour and 36 minutes, Cronenberg's remake of the 1958 movie (which was based on a 1957 short story) packs a lot in, getting right to the mad scientist's lab then plenty of body horror, experiments with flesh, and a bizarre transformation. Brundle, who teleports himself during a drunken pity party, did so with a fly on board. As a nature lover, I'm often asked about my favorite plants, animals, and insects. And I always struggle to answer those questions, because I have so many favorites, and they are context dependent. But when it comes to birds, woodpeckers often come to mind first. They're often colorful, charismatic, and have such an amazing set of adaptations that let them drill into trees, excavate insects from bark, and some even fly catch on the wing. One of the most interesting woodpecker species is the Acorn Woodpecker, found in much of the west and southwest. They live in large groups, are loud, have a clown face, and can store thousands of acorns in specially drilled holes that are just acorn sizes.Today's guest is Dr. Walt Koenig, who has spent several decades studying these birds, in affiliation with the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and UC Berkeley. Today we'll learn about their behaviors, why you don't find acorn woodpeckers in the east, despite a nice variety of oak trees, and get this - acorns aren't even their preferred food! Dr. Koenig has studied their breeding behaviors and group compositions, which is perhaps the most fascinating part of the interview, and I can't do it justice in a short intro - so you'll just have to listen. And if one studies acorn woodpeckers, it follows that one studies acorns, too. So we also discuss the phenomenon of masting - that is, when oak trees produce bumper crops of acorns, in synchrony across wide geographic ranges! In fact, this past year was a mast year for some oak species in California. So if you are interested in what causes masting, you might want to jump to the last 23 minutes or so of the interview. This re-release of our popular interview with Dr. Koenig is part of a playful exercise in community podcasting, with 6 different shows each producing their own stories about or inspired by the mystery of masting, and releasing them at (approximately) the same time. “When I was in medical school, no one had even heard of mitochondrial disease. Today, every student who graduates here knows what it is and has seen a patient with it,” says Dr. Mary Kay Koenig, director of the Center for the Treatment of Pediatric Neurodegenerative Disease at UTHealth Houston McGovern Medical School. That remarkable change in awareness has been accompanied by advances in genetic sequencing, the development of clinical guidelines, and the emergence of potential treatments in some forms of mitochondrial disease. In fact, Dr. Koenig's multidisciplinary team at UTHealth's Mitochondrial Center of Excellence has been a key player in clinical trials that may yield the first FDA-approved treatments for it. As you'll learn in this Year of the Zebra conversation with host Michael Carrese, her work in neurodegenerative diseases also includes tuberous sclerosis, where advanced therapies have replaced the need for repeated surgeries, and Leigh Syndrome, which has seen improvements in diagnoses and supportive therapies leading to better quality of life for patients. Tune in as Dr. Koenig reflects on an era of progress in the space, the rewards of balancing research, teaching and patient care, and the need for more clinicians to center listening, humility and honesty in their approach to caring for rare disease patients and their families.Mentioned in this episode:Mitochondrial Center of ExcellenceCenter for the Treatment of Pediatric Neurodegenerative Disease If you like this podcast, please share it on your social channels. Koenig also explains how Coco Gauff was able to block out the surrounding noise and win the Wuhan WTA Masters comfortably. This week on the Sausage of Science, Cara sits down with two trailblazing scholars shaping the future of paleoanthropology from the African continent outward. Dr. Palesa Madupe, postdoctoral researcher at the University of Copenhagen's Globe Institute, shares her pioneering work on enamel proteomics—reconstructing protein sequences from Paranthropus robustus and other South African hominins to unravel questions of taxonomy, sex determination, and sexual dimorphism. Joining her is Professor Becky Ackermann of the University of Cape Town, co-director of the Human Evolution Research Institute (HERI), whose influential research on evolutionary processes, phenotypic variation, and human diversity is reframing our understanding of our evolutionary story. From White House briefings to the streets of Jerusalem, William Koenig has seen prophecy and politics collide. In this episode, he shares a front-row account of how world leaders unknowingly advance biblical timelines, the media's war on Israel, and the spiritual battle shaping public opinion. It's a sweeping journey - spanning history, geopolitics, and the promises of God - that calls believers to watch, pray, and stand with Israel. Koenig's perspective bridges the gap between breaking news and eternal truth, revealing patterns that echo the words of the prophets. Whether you follow headlines or study Scripture, this conversation will equip you to see the times we're living in with clarity and conviction. Key Takeaways U.S. presidents - whether aware or not - play prophetic roles in Israel's story. Anti-Israel narratives in global media are well-funded and strategically spread. Replacement theology leaves much of the church blind to Israel's biblical significance. Modern events mirror the warnings of Zechariah, pointing to an approaching climax. Believers must frame the conversation biblically and prophetically, not just politically.
