David Cronenberg's The Fly (1986) stars Jeff Goldblum as Seth Brundle, a brilliant scientist who creates a teleportation process using telepods. Geena Davis, who was Goldblum's real-life partner during the filming, plays the ambitious journalist Veronica who falls in love with Brundle. Coming in at approximately an hour and 36 minutes, Cronenberg's remake of the 1958 movie (which was based on a 1957 short story) packs a lot in, getting right to the mad scientist's lab then plenty of body horror, experiments with flesh, and a bizarre transformation. Brundle, who teleports himself during a drunken pity party, did so with a fly on board. Since the computer doesn't know what to do with these two separate entities, it fuses them, resulting in Brundlefly, and utter tragedy. Daisy Koenig, a graduate of Winthrop University's design program, talks about what makes Cronenberg's The Fly so memorable and why unhappy endings are the best kind.-Daisy Koenig, a graduate of Winthrop University's design program, is a freelance illustrator and graphic designer based in Charleston, SC. Critical Mast: Acorn Woodpeckers and Oak Masting with Dr. Walt Koenig

As a nature lover, I'm often asked about my favorite plants, animals, and insects. And I always struggle to answer those questions, because I have so many favorites, and they are context dependent. But when it comes to birds, woodpeckers often come to mind first. They're often colorful, charismatic, and have such an amazing set of adaptations that let them drill into trees, excavate insects from bark, and some even fly catch on the wing. One of the most interesting woodpecker species is the Acorn Woodpecker, found in much of the west and southwest. They live in large groups, are loud, have a clown face, and can store thousands of acorns in specially drilled holes that are just acorn sizes.Today's guest is Dr. Walt Koenig, who has spent several decades studying these birds, in affiliation with the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and UC Berkeley. Today we'll learn about their behaviors, why you don't find acorn woodpeckers in the east, despite a nice variety of oak trees, and get this - acorns aren't even their preferred food! Dr. Koenig has studied their breeding behaviors and group compositions, which is perhaps the most fascinating part of the interview, and I can't do it justice in a short intro - so you'll just have to listen. And if one studies acorn woodpeckers, it follows that one studies acorns, too. So we also discuss the phenomenon of masting - that is, when oak trees produce bumper crops of acorns, in synchrony across wide geographic ranges! In fact, this past year was a mast year for some oak species in California. So if you are interested in what causes masting, you might want to jump to the last 23 minutes or so of the interview. This re-release of our popular interview with Dr. Koenig is part of a playful exercise in community podcasting, with 6 different shows each producing their own stories about or inspired by the mystery of masting, and releasing them at (approximately) the same time. For other masting stories, check out:Future EcologiesGolden State NaturalistLearning from Nature: The Biomimicry PodcastJumpstart NatureOutside/InWe'll populate this Spotify playlist with all our stories as they come out!FULL SHOW NOTESSupport Us On Patreon!Buy our Merch!Music: Spellbound by Brian Holtz MusicLicense (CC BY 4.0): https://filmmusic.io/standard-licenseArtist site: https://brianholtzmusic.com Discover the Jumpstart Nature Podcast - entertaining and immersive, it's the nature fix we all need.Check past Nature's Archive episodes for amazing guests like Doug Tallamy, Elaine Ingham, and Rae Wynn-Grant, covering topics from bird migration to fungi to frogs and bats!

“When I was in medical school, no one had even heard of mitochondrial disease. Today, every student who graduates here knows what it is and has seen a patient with it,” says Dr. Mary Kay Koenig, director of the Center for the Treatment of Pediatric Neurodegenerative Disease at UTHealth Houston McGovern Medical School. That remarkable change in awareness has been accompanied by advances in genetic sequencing, the development of clinical guidelines, and the emergence of potential treatments in some forms of mitochondrial disease. In fact, Dr. Koenig's multidisciplinary team at UTHealth's Mitochondrial Center of Excellence has been a key player in clinical trials that may yield the first FDA-approved treatments for it. As you'll learn in this Year of the Zebra conversation with host Michael Carrese, her work in neurodegenerative diseases also includes tuberous sclerosis, where advanced therapies have replaced the need for repeated surgeries, and Leigh Syndrome, which has seen improvements in diagnoses and supportive therapies leading to better quality of life for patients.  Tune in as Dr. Koenig reflects on an era of progress in the space, the rewards of balancing research, teaching and patient care, and the need for more clinicians to center listening, humility and honesty in their approach to caring for rare disease patients and their  families.Mentioned in this episode:Mitochondrial Center of ExcellenceCenter for the Treatment of Pediatric Neurodegenerative Disease If you like this podcast, please share it on your social channels. Guest Bio / Introduction Urs Koenig is a leadership coach, keynote speaker, former NATO peacekeeping commander, and ultra-endurance athlete. With an eclectic background spanning UN peacekeeping missions, military command, competitive cycling, academia, and business coaching, Urs brings a rare blend of lived experience and research-backed insight to leadership. His award-winning book, Radical Humility, challenges the outdated “heroic” leadership model and offers a compelling framework for blending high performance with humanity.     Episode Summary In this episode of The Grit Factor, Shannon Huffman Polson talks with Urs Koenig about his journey from the intense world of ultra-endurance sports to leading international peacekeeping missions—and how those experiences shaped his philosophy of “radical humility.” Urs shares how failure in a 3,000-mile race across America became a crucible for growth, why loving people is at the heart of great leadership, and how leaders can be both tough on results and tender on people. They also explore the five shifts in his leadership framework, the importance of self-awareness, and how purpose evolves over time. Urs leaves listeners with practical strategies for managing energy, building agency in teams, and redefining success as being both a badass leader and a good human.     Important Topics Covered 00:02:45 – Urs's unconventional journey from academia to ultra-endurance sports to military command. 00:07:20 – The Race Across America failure story and how reframing setbacks fuels growth. 00:11:35 – Why leaders must truly love people to be effective. 00:15:50 – “Tough on results, tender on people” — balancing high standards with deep care. 00:20:12 – The Five Shifts of Radical Humility explained. 00:26:40 – Commander's Intent: how clarity of purpose empowers teams. 00:33:05 – Managing energy like an elite athlete for sustainable performance. 00:37:15 – The confidence vs. competence trap in leadership promotion. 00:42:28 – When transparency becomes oversharing—and the concept of being “translucent.” 00:48:00 – Lessons from Urs's father on reinvention and courage. 00:53:22 – Redefining success as being both a badass leader and a good human.       Episode Highlights 00:07:50 – “That DNF was one of the best things that ever happened to me—it taught me how to reframe failure.” 00:11:40 – “You want to be a leader? From White House briefings to the streets of Jerusalem, William Koenig has seen prophecy and politics collide.  In this episode, he shares a front-row account of how world leaders unknowingly advance biblical timelines, the media's war on Israel, and the spiritual battle shaping public opinion. It's a sweeping journey - spanning history, geopolitics, and the promises of God - that calls believers to watch, pray, and stand with Israel. Koenig's perspective bridges the gap between breaking news and eternal truth, revealing patterns that echo the words of the prophets. Whether you follow headlines or study Scripture, this conversation will equip you to see the times we're living in with clarity and conviction. Key Takeaways U.S. presidents - whether aware or not - play prophetic roles in Israel's story. Anti-Israel narratives in global media are well-funded and strategically spread. Replacement theology leaves much of the church blind to Israel's biblical significance. Modern events mirror the warnings of Zechariah, pointing to an approaching climax. Believers must frame the conversation biblically and prophetically, not just politically. Teen, Joseph Koenig, Convicted of Murder For Dropping Boulders Off Busy Overpass Jurors in Jefferson County needed barely two hours Friday morning to convict Joseph Koenig of first-degree murder for hurling a landscaping rock through the windshield of Alexa Bartell's moving car, killing the 20-year-old as she drove near Arvada in April 2023. Deliberations began late Thursday and resumed at 9 a.m.; by 10:45, the panel had returned guilty verdicts on every one of the 19 counts Koenig faced. Koenig, now 19, stood accused not only of Bartell's murder but of unleashing a late-night rock-throwing spree that terrorized motorists across northwest metro Denver. Prosecutors charged him with nine counts of attempted first-degree murder for the other cars struck, three counts of second-degree assault, and six counts of attempted second-degree assault. While the jury found Koenig guilty on each allegation, several counts were reduced under Colorado law. Last week jurors heard from nearly two dozen witnesses, including victims who recalled the sudden shatter of glass and the panic of losing control at highway speed. The most damning testimony came from Koenig's two friends—Nicholas “Mitch” Karol-Chik and Zachary Kwak—who took plea deals and told the jury Koenig threw the fatal rock. The defense pounced on Karol-Chik's earlier statement to police suggesting Kwak hurled the final stone, but both men insisted on the stand that Koenig was responsible for Bartell's death. Koenig himself never testified. Instead, defense lawyers called Laurence Steinberg, a Temple University adolescent-brain researcher, to argue that impulsivity and Koenig's ADHD lessened his culpability. Deputy District Attorney Katharine Decker countered in a pointed cross-examination, pressing Steinberg to acknowledge that teenagers can still foresee lethal consequences. Koenig was a high school senior at the time of the incident. Originally scheduled for trial last summer, the case was postponed for a court-ordered mental-health evaluation after Koenig's attorneys cited an ADHD diagnosis and borderline personality disorder. Closing arguments Thursday distilled the stakes: prosecutors said Koenig acted “knowingly and intentionally,” while defense attorney Martin Stuart asked jurors to convict only of reckless manslaughter—calling his client “guilty of a crime, but not murder.” Evidence showed that Koenig, Karol-Chik, and Kwak circled back to the crash scene on April 19, 2023, photographing Bartell's disabled Chevy Spark instead of checking on her or dialing 911. That callous post-attack behavior, prosecutors argued, underscored Koenig's indifference to human life. After the verdict, Bartell's mother, Kelly, stood outside the courthouse clutching a framed photo of her daughter. “These have been the hardest two years of our lives, but we got justice today,” she said through tears. “It doesn't bring Alexa back, and that's horrible. But we hope no family ever has to live this nightmare again.” District Court Judge Mark Randall set Koenig's sentencing for June 3 at 8:30 a.m. Victims and relatives will be allowed to address the court before penalties are imposed; a first-degree murder conviction in Colorado carries an automatic life sentence with the possibility of parole after 40 years. Karol-Chik and Kwak, who pleaded guilty last year to lesser charges—including second-degree murder and multiple counts of attempted assault—are scheduled to learn their fates on May 1 and May 2, respectively Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? Munaf Manji and Griffin Warner break down MLB Friday from a betting perspective. best bets as always. Munaf Manji and Griffin Warner hosted the MLB podcast focusing on Friday's games. They began by reflecting on their recent 2-0 best bets streak, expressing confidence heading into the weekend. The first highlighted game was the Chicago rivalry at Wrigley Field, where Shane Smith starts for the struggling White Sox against Cade Horton of the Cubs. Griffin noted Horton's limited pitch mix might still overpower the weak Sox lineup. Munaf emphasized the Cubs' rest advantage and the Sox's fatigue after a loss in Cincinnati. Next, the Guardians face the Reds in the "Battle of Ohio." Griffin was cautious about Tanner Bybee as a road favorite, pointing out the hitter-friendly park and Brady Singer's vulnerability to home runs. Munaf countered, citing Bybee's strong recent performances, including seven innings against the Phillies, making him lean toward the Guardians' money line. In Philadelphia, Andrew Haney's inconsistency was likened to an unpredictable night out, while Ranger Suarez's solid home record made the Phillies a favored pick, especially on the run line, with Munaf highlighting Haney's poor career numbers against the Phillies. For the Mets vs Yankees, Griffin leaned toward the Mets due to their bullpen strength and skepticism of the Yankees' offense, while Munaf preferred betting the over, expecting home runs from both sides at Yankee Stadium. Griffin selected the Orioles over the Nationals as his best bet, trusting Baltimore's bullpen despite their shaky start to the season. Munaf agreed, noting Cade Povich's prior success against the Nationals. In Toronto, Griffin doubted the Tigers' offense despite their strong start, while Munaf leaned under 8.5, noting Flaherty's rough patch and Francis's vulnerability. In the Braves vs Red Sox matchup, Griffin was hesitant to back Chris Sale and wary of the Braves' underperformance. Munaf praised Crochet's early season form and leaned towards under eight, expecting a pitching duel. Regarding the Astros vs Rangers, both analysts favored the Rangers due to Ivaldi's dominance and McCullers Jr.'s limited pitch count. Munaf stressed the under, given the Astros' offensive struggles and Rangers' home under trends. In Milwaukee, Griffin was cautious about backing the Brewers despite Chad Patrick's solid form, while Munaf pointed out the absence of Buxton and Correa for the Twins, making the under eight a strong play. For the late games, they mocked the Rockies' dire situation in Arizona, where Corbin Burns' Diamondbacks were massive favorites. Munaf joked about backing the D-Backs team total overs. In San Diego, Munaf leaned over eight and a half in the Mariners vs Padres game, noting Koenig's regression potential after his shutout of the Rockies. Griffin, however, was hesitant. The Dodgers vs Angels featured Dustin May against Jack Kahanowitz. Both hosts dismissed the Angels' chances, advising bettors to focus on Dodgers team totals. In the Giants vs A's game, Griffin acknowledged JP Sears' surprising stability but warned about his fly-ball tendencies in San Francisco's pitcher-friendly park. Munaf favored Logan Webb's strong home splits and suggested a Giants win by multiple runs. Finally, the best bets were set: Griffin chose Orioles ML at -108, citing bullpen strength and home field, while Munaf selected Phillies -1.5 at -108, pointing to Suarez's home form and Haney's frailties. Throughout the podcast, both hosts balanced data and playful commentary, giving special attention to pitching matchups, team fatigue, and offensive inconsistencies, emphasizing the significance of situational factors like park dimensions and team travel schedules. Gerhard Canig, a man known for precision and calm under pressure, is now under scrutiny after allegedly trying to kill his wife, Ariel, by pushing her off a cliff—and possibly backing that plan up with some mysteriously packed syringes. FBI behavioral expert Robin Dreeke joins to dissect the mind behind this bizarre and chilling alleged crime. Was it a spur-of-the-moment snap or a calculated act by someone who thought syringes made for a solid Plan B? The conversation dives into Gerhard's alleged methodical planning, the disturbing assumptions he may have made about his wife's will to live, and just how unsterile the real world can be compared to an operating room. With talk of hidden relationships, potential life insurance motives, and the psychology of a “broken brain moron” (yep, we said it), this case unfolds with layers of sinister intent—and quite a few possible digital breadcrumbs left behind.
