The Burnout to Bliss Podcast is for women in medicine who are ready to opt-out of cycles of burnout, overwhelm, and stress by tapping into their feminine genius. As a board-certified Occupational Medicine physician and dual-certified life coach, Dr. Claud
Episode 047: It's that time of year! Like many people, you are probably thinking about your goals and resolutions for 2023. But here's where most people go wrong: they focus ONLY on the action steps they need to take to achieve a goal and rely SOLELY on willpower. But willpower is a finite resource that isn't the best fuel for taking action to achieve goals. In this episode you'll learn: A simple 3-step process to evaluate 2022 Reverse engineering a goal using the Model How to integrate simple somatic tools into your goal-setting framework I help women physicians stop gaslighting themselves so they can permanently recover from burnout. Visit www.theembodiedmd.com to learn more.
Episode 046: Have you ever wondered why the data typically shows that women physicians are more burned out than men? It's probably multifactorial, but I believe there's a deeper, more insidious driving force contributing to burnout in women physicians--our female social conditioning. As women, we've been conditioned to think about ourselves in ways that drive us to over-work, over-perform and over-function. In today's episode, we'll explore the 3 most common mindsets that contribute to burnout and why simply being aware that these mindsets are at play can create a massive shift. Episode 045: At the 2022 Lifestyle Medicine conference, Dr. Jerome Adams, 20th Surgeon General of the United States, said "It's where we live, learn, work, play and pray that makes us healthy.” What is lifestyle medicine? What does lifestyle have to do with burnout? What can lifestyle medicine teach us about burnout recovery? Listen to today's episode to find out!
Episode 044: Moral injury is something that women in medicine experience every day. It's that inner conflict between how you desire to practice medicine and serve your patients that may not be aligned with bottom lines. Moral injury is a trauma response--and it's important to know the signs. In today's episode we'll talk about: What moral injury is The correlation between moral injury, burnout and trauma The 5 main signs/symptoms of moral injury Why somatic work is an essential part of an integrative approach to burnout recovery To learn more about how women in medicine can shift chronic stress, burnout and overwhelm from the inside out, click HERE to download my free Burnout Recovery Guide: https://resources.theembodiedmd.com/burnout-recovery-guide
Episode 043: What if I told you there's a way to immediately shift whatever you're experiencing in any given moment? There is. The way to do this by asking yourself better questions. There's a famous quote in the personal development world that "the quality of your life is determined by the quality of the questions you ask yourself." During our inner dialogue, all of us ask ourselves questions all the time. But when we ask lower quality questions, we get lower quality answers that keep us stuck in states of confusion or helplessness. When we ask higher quality questions, it opens us up to higher levels of information. Here's what you'll learn in today's episode: How to correctly use our brain's "search engine" to ask better questions How asking questions fits into the cognitive triad (think-feel-do cycle) The difference between high quality and low quality questions 5 high quality questions you can ask yourself to get out of any mental rut To learn more about how women in medicine can shift chronic stress, burnout and overwhelm from the inside out, click HERE to download my free Burnout Recovery Guide: https://resources.theembodiedmd.com/burnout-recovery-guide
Episode 042: In today's episode, we'll discuss the importance of embracing the full spectrum of our thoughts, feelings and sensations--not just the comfortable ones. As one of my mentors Brooke Castillo of the Life Coach School says often, life is 50:50. When we put pressure on ourselves to feel positive or happy all the time, then we're not embracing reality. That just leads to more pain and suffering in the long term. It takes approximately 90 seconds to allow an uncomfortable emotions to pass through you like a wave. When we embrace all facets of ourselves, then we can model this level of embodiment for our patients which will in turn help them to do the same. Episode 041: Humans hate change. That's partly a survival instinct because anything new and different could be dangerous. So we're naturally wired to be cautious and resist change. However, our ability to achieve our goals and dreams is directly proportional to our capacity to change. So it's important to understand that 95% of our behavior comes from the unconscious part of our mind. It's the part of our mind that we're NOT consciously aware of yet it has a huge impact. But if you don't understand this, you might think you just lack motivation or you don't have the right information. You might judge yourself and try to push even harder. So to change your behavior and move forward, you have to update the old programming. The way to do this is: 1) Excavate the programs that your system is currently operating from. 2) Determine if the current programs are giving you the result you want. 3) Create change on the mind + body + environment levels to create the results you want. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ To learn more about my 360-degree mind-body-environment approach to coaching and understand your unconscious patterns more, sign up for my FREE 5-day Burnout Bootcamp. Episode 040: Resistance is something that we all experience, ESPECIALLY when we're on a personal development journey. Since our nervous system is wired for safety and survival, it will often get activated when we're trying to do something new--even if it's the best thing for us. Achieving the next level of success requires you to step beyond your comfort zone which will naturally bring up resistance. How you rise to the challenge and handle resistance is huge. In today's episode, we'll discuss: What resistance is Where it comes from What to do about it If you're a woman in medicine who is ready to take the next step in overcoming chronic workplace stress, burnout and overwhelm, sign up for my FREE 5-Day Burnout Bootcamp Challenge. Episode 039: Most people think resilience is about being tough and rigid but it's actually about being flexible and adaptable. According the American Psychological Association, "Resilience is the process and outcome of successfully adapting to difficult or challenging life experiences, especially through mental, emotional, and behavioral flexibility and adjustment to external and internal demands." When you are experiencing chronic workplace stress, your nervous system spends a lot of time in hyperarousal (fight or flight) or hypoarousal (freeze). Resilience is not so much about being tough and hard on the outside. It's not about resisting the ups and downs of life and career. It's actually about leaning into it--being flexible and flowing with whatever is happening. I love hearing when my clients track their successes and share their wins with me. While it's great that I can see their progress, it gives me goosebumps when they can recognize it for themselves. Episode 036: If you're having trouble achieving a goal, it's probably NOT because you're lacking information. More likely than not, the issue is you're not implementing the information that you likely already have access to. Acquiring more information does not equal transformation. Only implementation can do that. What's the difference in the level of success between two people who have access to the same information? How the information is utilized and acted upon. Period. In today's episode we'll discuss: The difference between information and implementation What drives your need to consume information How information consumption is a form of buffering A quick process for you to assess if you already have enough information or resources for your current goals I also share about my upcoming Burnout Bootcamp for Women in Medicine. Episode 035: Today's episode is a short, sweet, "motivational Monday" type of episode. If you're ever felt broken or like there's something wrong with you, I just want you to know those are thought errors. There's always a GOOD reason for everything you do--even if it doesn't make sense to you now...The actions you take (or don't take) are rooted in your physiology (i.e. autonomic survival processes) and your social conditioning. Before you can create effective and lasting change, you have to accept the person you are today from a place of grace and compassion--not disgust and shame If you choose to work with a coach or other professional, it's important to work with someone who sees you are empowered, healthy and whole, not someone who needs to be "fixed" by someone outside of you.. Episode 034: Is Work-Life Balance a Myth? Some people think so...Even the phrase suggests there is this optimal fixed, 50-50 ratio between your work life and your personal life that we should strive for. But is that even possible--or appropriate? In today's episode, we'll explore: What work-life balance is Some of the issues I have with the concept of work-life balance Why work-flow balance™ is a better way for women to achieve balance in all areas of their life. Also this Wednesday, Aug 10 at 8 pm ET, I'm doing a live training on how women in medicine can achieve Work-Flow Balance™. You'll learn the top 5 reasons women in medicine are burning out at an alarming rate, how your social conditioning plays a HUGE role in this and how to release these old patterns to create more balance in your life. You'll get free CME for attending so you don't want to miss it! Click HERE to register for the training. I hope to see you there!
Episode 033: In this episode, I'm sharing my philosophy about transformational coaching and why it's important to address both the mind and the body. Typically women who are raised in a Western culture are disconnected from their bodies and take on a more analytical approach to problem-solving. And while you can create incredible results from simply understanding your thought patterns and beliefs, there are often deeper roots traveling from the brain into the body that have to be unraveled. This is where the embodiment or somatic work comes in. You learn to experience and tolerate feelings and sensations in your body in a safe and gentle way. Over time, this allows you to peel back all the layers that you've built up over the years, release energetic blocks, and ultimately get unstuck. The integration of mind-body work is essential for thriving in life (instead of merely surviving). On August 10, I'll be doing a free live training on the concept of internal integration to eliminate burnout for good. Click HERE to sign up for the training and also get free CME for attending!
Episode 032: Today we're taking a deep dive into procrastination. It's something that many people struggle with and often there's a feeling of shame that goes along with it. If you identify as a procrastinator, perhaps you were labeled as lazy, a slacker, or unmotivated in the past. The truth is, that's not the real reason you procrastinate. In this episode, we'll explore: What procrastination is How your nervous system tries to create safety through procrastination How to identify and shift the root cause of procrastination so you can figure out your next steps forward to complete the task or project. I've identified 6 reasons that people commonly procrastinate and developed a process to shift it in real time. This week I'm offering 1:1 Overcome Procrastination sessions to help you identify the main reason so you can release it and move forward. During the session, we'll focus on one task that you're struggling to complete. We'll figure out how the situation is triggering your nervous system so you can create more internal safety and create an action plan. Episode 031: This week, we're chatting about the power of constraining when it comes to time management. As women, we've been conditioned to think we have to do #allthethings because we've been taught that our value comes from how productive we are. So if we're not taking "massive action" in our career or in our lives in general, we feel guilty or even ashamed for not doing enough. This line of thinking keeps so many women in medicine burned out and feeling perpetually overwhelmed. In today's episode you'll learn: What it means to constrain your time The 3 ways you can view time constraints (and which is the most effective) The 4 benefits of constraining as one tool to manage your time. Click HERE to download the FREE time management planner I mentioned in the episode.
Episode 030: This week, we're talking about the importance of rest and how seemingly dormant periods of our lives actually play an important role. Often, a lot of important “work” is happening during these seasons of rest. In a world that values output and productivity, it's important to reframe your conditioning around rest. In this episode we're discussing: -How rest can be fertile -The3 S's of productive rest -How to intentionally create rest daily, monthly and annually Visit www.theembodiedmd.com to learn more about shifting burnout, overwhelm and stress from the inside out.
Episode 29: Burnout can have such a profound impact on your system that it can trigger your survival instincts (also known as trauma responses or stress responses). Your nervous system developed these coping mechanisms to help you deal with a real or perceived threat so you can get to a place of safety. Although the trauma responses--fight, flight, freeze and fawn--may be necessary and healthy at times, these responses may also show up as a maladaptive strategy in times of stress and create more problems long-term. In this episode, you'll learn: What are the 4 trauma/stress responses How each of these responses manifests when you're burned out Where your default trauma response(s) comes from 3 steps to process a stress response in real time To learn more about how coaching can help you understand the thoughts that may be triggering these trauma responses and do the body work to release it on a deeper level, visit my website www.theembodiedmd.com.
Episode 028: Everything in nature has seasons--including you. But the way we work and think about productivity isn't consistent with our nature. I love this quote from Kate Northrup's book Do Less: "The way we work in our culture is as though we're in a perpetual harvest. But anyone who's grown anything in the earth knows that this is impossible." Expecting the same level of energy, intensity and output from month to month, week to week, or day to day is unrealistic and harmful--and yet we do it anyway because that's what we have been taught. In today's episode, we'll discuss: What seasonal living is The 4 seasons you experience every month and what to expect during each season How to navigate the traditional 40-hour work week using a seasonal approach In my Practice with Passion Planner, you can learn more about how to uplevel your to do list and "create" more time each with with the principles of seasonal living and feminine embodiment work. Episode 027: We talk a lot about the negative effects of burnout, but in this week's episode I wanted to explore burnout from a different angle--the secondary gain you might be getting if you're using work and busy-ness as a buffer. Buffering is the act of putting a barrier between yourself and something else, to avoid the experience of it. So that could be an uncomfortable emotion, a person, a situation, etc. Although buffering typically does provide some relief (via the release of dopamine in your brain), the overall NET effect of buffering is negative--100% of the time. Here's what we'll discuss: What buffering is and why we do it How to know if you're using work as a buffer 2 powerful questions to ask yourself so you can stop buffering Understanding the thoughts and feelings that drive you to buffer with work (and other things) is an essential part of burnout recovery! If you enjoyed this episode and would like to learn more about how to unravel and process what you're thinking and feeling in real time, click HERE to schedule a free 60-minute consultation where we'll get to the root of why you're burned out.
Episode 026: Burnout is the result of ignoring your own needs, suppressing your desires, and rejecting parts of yourself. That is actually the definition of self-abandonment and it's an important—but often subtle—cause of burnout. In this week's episode, we're discussing: What self-abandonment is and 4 ways it shows up for women in medicine How self-abandonment is rooted in childhood wounding A 3 step process to heal self-abandonment Once you recognize that you're abandoning yourself, you can make a different choice in the moment. It's something that takes practice overtime but learning to prioritize your wants and needs first can cause a huge ripple effect in your life if you're experiencing burnout. In Beyond Burnout™, self-abandonment is just ONE of the core wounds fueling burnout that we dive into. Click HERE to schedule a free 60-minute consultation if you'd like support working through it!
Episode 025: Welcome back to the Burnout to Bliss Podcast! Since we're almost at the mid-point of the year, I thought it would be helpful to revisit your goals. So many people set resolutions or goals at the beginning of the year. And maybe you've made some progress on your goals but if you're like a lot of people, you feel like time is passing by so quickly and at this point in the year, achieving some of your goals feel "impossible." But as Audrey Hepburn famously said: the word itself says "I'm possible." In this episode we're discussing: How to reverse-engineer your goals to maximize what's left of the year The importance of writing down your goals How to evaluate your progress so you can make adjustments along the way This month, I'm also hosting a LIVE workshop/coaching call on June 29 at 5 pm PT| 8pm ET. Episode 024: If you are a woman in medicine who feels undervalued and unappreciated at work, you're not alone. Feeling this way is a huge contributing factor to burnout. Surveys of health care workers also show that women feel more unappreciated in the workplace than men. If you consistently feel this way, chances are you've forgotten some key truths. In this episode, I share: Two "thought errors" causing you to feel undervalued and unappreciated What it really means to be valuable Who/what determines your value How to fill up your own value bank Learning how to see your own value, fill up your own tank with appreciation and turn your inner critic into your BFF are simply skills that you can learn and practice over time. I can help you with this. Let's set up a time to chat HERE.
Episode 023: So many women in medicine struggle with imposter syndrome and it's a huge contributing factor to burnout! It can be the driving force behind why you feel so much pressure to achieve, feel guilty saying "no" and constantly seek external approval/validation. So in today's episode, we'll discuss: What imposter syndrome is The signs and symptoms of imposter syndrome How imposter syndrome manifests and what it has to do with burnout A helpful process to help you navigate imposter syndrome Having a safe space to share when you're feeling like an imposter and processing in real time is so invaluable. In my 90-day Beyond Burnout™ coaching program, we process imposter syndrome through a combination of mindset and embodiment work. So if you're a woman in medicine and could use some support letting go of imposter syndrome for good, I can help you! Episode 022: There is an epidemic of indecision these days. So many people struggle to choose and commit to something. But the truth is not making a decision IS a decision! When you don't make a decision, you are choosing your current circumstances. So nothing changes. The result is you don't grow, change, or learn the lessons that could take you to the next level. Ultimately, the decision to NOT decide keeps you stuck. So on this episode we'll explore: What indecision is Why is can be so hard for human beings to commit to something Why indecision is problematic How the 4Cs framework by Dan Sullivan can help you move beyond indecision If you're a woman in medicine and feel stuck in your life or career because of indecision, I can help you. Time scarcity and urgency about time is something that comes up with just about EVERY woman I speak to! So this week, I'm sharing with you what you need to know to let go of scarcity thinking about time. During the training, we discussed: Exploring your beliefs about time, productivity and pleasure How to change your story about time How to hack something our brain is wired to do naturally (the motivational triad) to make productivity more pleasurable Lack of productivity is one of the 5 reasons women in medicine are burned out. Episode 020: Did you know 2/3 of the reason people feel burned out has nothing to do with the job itself??? In today's episode, I'm sharing the 3 components of the burnout equation and why focusing most of your efforts within to address personality and lifestyle factors (rather than zero in on workplace factors) is the BEST way to solve it. Episode 019: Although possibility ONLY exists in the future, our default is to look to the past for information. From a survival perspective, our brain looks to the past to warn us or prevent us from making the same mistake in the future. However, when you're trying to achieve a new goal, it's much more effective to look to the past for evidence of your SUCCESS and to "borrow" the thoughts, feelings and actions that created that success so you can achieve something totally new in the future. I'll walk you through 4 steps to reverse engineer past successes so you create a blueprint that you can use again and again. If you are trying to achieve a goal that has felt out of reach and you can't figure it out on your own, I can help you. Let's set up a time to chat so you can learn how to apply this framework to identify the thoughts, feelings and actions that you can borrow from past success to help you move forward. Episode 018: Today we're talking about where you source your validation. In medicine, a lot of validation comes from outside of us i.e. patient satisfaction surveys, performance evaluations, RVU metrics, etc. But even outside of work, we often feel our worth comes from our accomplishments and what we can contribute instead of who we are being. While feedback from others is also necessary and can be helpful, it's so much more meaningful when it's put in the context of our own self-evaluation. In the first few sessions of 1:1 coaching, I teach my clients how to understand their thought processes so they can learn the skill of internal validation ASAP. Episode 017: Achieving your biggest dreams and desires will require you to do something you've never done before, and become someone new in the process. That, my friends, is UNCOMFORTABLE. The fear of discomfort keeps many people stuck in their suffering because it feels "safer" than the unknown. But all possibilities are in the future. If you keep using your present or your past to determine what's possible for you in the future, you'll just keep re-creating more of the same. If you're moving through life feeling like everything is status quo, consider this your wake up call to do hard things and embrace a little more discomfort in your life. If you need help figuring out your next steps to get un-stuck, I can help you. Episode 016: In today's episode, we're discussing how our triggers as adults our often rooted in the past--in our childhood experiences. If we don't learn how to heal and process these traumas from the past (both big T and little T trauma) the emotional charge from these experiences get trapped in our bodies, blocking our natural flow. And when someone comes along and does something that triggers us (i.e.make a joke), our primal instinct to fight, flee, freeze or fawn kicks in. This is just a normal part of being human--but the good news is this is completely fixable. I share 3 steps for you to take the wheel back from the wounded inner child who has been driving the car of your life and start to re-parent her in the ways you needed as a child. If you'd like to learn how managing your triggers and healing the past could be the key to your recovery from burnout, I invite you to schedule your free 60-minute consultation HERE: https://theembodiedmd.as.me/?appointmentType=20817866 If you enjoyed today's show, I would appreciate it if you would rate and leave a review to let me know and to help others find The Burnout to Bliss Podcast.
Episode 015: As Women's History Month comes to a close, it's important for women in medicine to reflect on where we are today and where we want to go in the future. We've come so far and we should not only celebrate our professional achievements, but those of the women who have gone before us. However, there is still more work to be done. While the fight for equality and fairness was necessary, it perhaps pushed us too far in the other direction...to another extreme. We've been taught that being successful means doing things like men. We've been taught to disconnect from our body and her “inconvenient” cycles and rhythms. We've been taught that feelings and emotions are uncomfortable, unsafe and potentially embarrassing, so we learned to suppress or numb them out. THIS is a huge reason for burnout, overwhelm and stress. But I believe that as we embody our feminine genius MORE and bring it into balance with the masculine, we will see a profound shift--not only within ourselves, but in the world as well. So I'm sharing 3 truths for women in medicine to embrace during Women's History Month and beyond. If you're struggling with time management and feel like there just aren't enough hours in the day for you to get everything on your to-do list done, then check our my FREE Practice With Passion Planner. I'll show you a SIMPLE framework (deceptively simple) to help you uplevel your to do list and find more time each week. Episode 014: On today's episode, we are following-up to last week's episode about WHY you need a self-coaching practice. Today I'm going to show you HOW to actually do it. I'm sharing the basic framework that I created my process around and walking you through the individual steps. Even if you're working with a coach 1:1 it's so important for you to develop the skill of learning how to turn the voice of your inner critic or judge into your biggest supporter. To download the FREE guided drop in meditation that I mention in the episode click HERE: https://mailchi.mp/3ac4993f3693/embodied-md-drop-in-audio If you enjoyed today's show, I would appreciate it if you would rate and leave a review to let me know and to help others find The Burnout to Bliss Podcast.
Episode 013: On today's episode, I'm discussing the importance of a self-coaching practice and why every woman needs one! We all have an inner judge or inner critic that's purpose is to keep us in line. But to live from a place of freedom instead of fear, we need to develop the voice of our inner coach which is loving and supportive. My primary goal when working with a client is to remind her of the wisdom and knowledge that she has access to within herself. THIS is the true gift of coaching. 1:1 coaching is a powerful way to guide clients into accessing this truth, but self-coaching is the process that allows a woman to continue to develop self-trust over time--outside of the 1:1 coaching container. I teach my clients a very specific framework that combines mindset and embodiment work. To learn more about this framework I teach and how you can use it in your own life, I invite you to schedule a free 60-minute consultation HERE: https://theembodiedmd.as.me/schedule.php?appointmentType=20817866 If you enjoyed today's show, I would appreciate it if you would rate and leave a review to let me know and to help others find The Burnout to Bliss Podcast.
Episode 012: In this week's episode, we're taking a deep dive into how you can navigate situations that feel difficult or challenging. We often can't change the circumstances that we find ourselves in but we ALWAYS have control over how we think, feel, act and show up. So you don't actually need external circumstances to change before you do. I'm going to share 4 steps to manage any situation, no matter how difficult so you feel at CAUSE in your life instead of at EFFECT. If you'd like to chat with me 1:1 to discuss a specific situation that's challenging you and walk away with an action plan, I invite you to schedule your free 60-minute consultation HERE: https://theembodiedmd.as.me/schedule.php?appointmentType=20817866 If you enjoyed today's show, I would appreciate it if you would rate and leave a review to let me know and to help others find The Burnout to Bliss Podcast.
Episode 011: This is the final episode in our feminine burnout archetype series! Episode 006: On today's episode, we'll discuss feelings and how to have loving presence for them instead of shame yourself for them. Feelings are the language of the body and provide vital information about your inner and outer environment. The paradox of feelings is that you actually have to experience them and FEEL them to liberate and HEAL them. Today I share a simple 3-step process for normalizing your feelings instead of labeling them as "bad" or "wrong." Episode 005: A few months ago, I created a free download called the Conscious Clinician Shift Planner and Reflection Journal and at the time of this recording, I've had over a hundred downloads since it was released. I thought it would be fun to record this episode as a companion to the download. The reason I created the journal in the first place is because I know that these are challenging times for women in medicine. Our health care system is stressed to the max and I know that it's common to feel anxious before going to work or before starting your shift. Or maybe you find it hard to leave work at work. Or you find yourself thinking about tough cases or difficult patient interactions. Or maybe you run through the day in your head and wonder if you came up with the right diagnosis or the right treatment plan. I created something that can help you switch the survival, fight or flight part of your brain off and use the higher thinking part of your brain so you not only prepare for the day and plan how you want your day to look, but also reflect on how your day actually went. Episode 004: It's the beginning of a new year and the perfect time to create an action plan for achieving your goals. Most people rely on will power, effort and hustling to try to achieve their goals or New Year's Resolutions but inevitably find themselves burned out and just give up. In this episode, I'm sharing why traditional goal-setting fails and how women can use their feminine genius to help them achieve their goals in a more effortless way! In this episode I share one of the FIVE principles of feminine goal-getting. Episode 003: Today we're diving into my philosophy on what leads to true, lasting burnout recovery. We explore why shifting burnout from the inside out is more powerful (and empowering) than just relying on external or systemic changes. We also discuss how the circumstances creating burnout are actually neutral but your thoughts about these circumstances rarely are. Understanding this cognitive behavioral model, learning how to self-coach and using embodiment tools ultimately leads to the higher level shifts that you need to make to become burnout-proof.
