Hey Warriors! In this episode of the Love Your Life Show, I'm diving into something so many of us struggle with: how to truly support the anxious people in our lives—whether it's your teen, young adult, or even your partner.  It's easy to fall into habits of fixing, dismissing, or saying things we think are helpful but actually fuel their inner critic or inner rebel. I'm sharing how we can instead strengthen their inner coach, the voice that builds resilience and confidence, while staying calm and grounded ourselves.  If you've ever wondered how to help someone you love without taking on their anxiety, this episode is for you. “Instead of being mean to myself and saying, ‘You've got nothing else outside of running,' I said, ‘Look at all the other multi-faceted things you are. You are a son, you are a brother, you're a business owner. Humans are multi-faceted; you have an identity outside this sport. The sport may have helped you find more of your authenticity, but you're not bound to this sport. It's only a piece of the puzzle, a part of your identity.”   When Merrell Professional Athlete Aum Gandhi first started running six years ago, he barely went a quarter of a mile—and he describes it now as “the most nauseating, grueling experience ever.” But something compelled him to do it again, and again, and again. Now, he's regularly conquering distances of 200 miles and more.   All that has taken him incredible places, including to the helm of endurance-sports publication Run Tri Bike; to that professional contract with Merrell; and as a key fundraiser for the Richstone Family Center. Several years later, however, all that came into question at mile 235 of a 240-mile race, when a hip injury forced him to make a huge decision about whether to continue.    Hear how Aum harnessed his inner coach to rebound from that injury and redefine his relationship to running; how the everyday athletes he profiles on Run Tri Bike inspire him; what he gains from his relationship with kids at the Richstone Family Center who are also overcoming trauma; and his advice for the ultrarunner in all of us.   Resources/links: Aum's Instagram Run Tri Bike His fundraiser for the Richstone Family Center   You can subscribe to The Injured Athletes Club on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, Audible, Amazon Music, or wherever you get your podcasts, and if you like what you hear, please leave us a rating or a review in Apple podcasts. Who is the Little Guy?The Little Guy is a version of yourself that lives in your head. It's an inner voice that sows doubt, fear, and self-hatred. The little guy is a dark part of you that tears you down and pushes you to be petty and negative. It's an inner voice that we must all overcome if we seek to live happy, healthy lives. Why is overcoming the Little Guy important?Because the Little Guy robs leaders of valuable thinking time, resulting in less effective solutions, less inspirational interaction, and even less time leading. To lead well, leaders need the full capacity of their minds. They must have time to think, and those thoughts have to be very clear. Our brains are kind of like computers. We only have so much space available to process things. If we clog our brains up with the unproductive, maybe even counterproductive, thoughts of the Little Guy, we're reducing our capacity to TPL (Think, Plan, and Lead). To be the best leaders we can be, we must learn how to overcome the Little Guy, because it's destructive, distracting, and takes you off task. How do we contain the Little Guy?One - Acknowledge that the Little Guy occupies space in your head and commit to containing it.Two - Keep the Little Guy contained. At the time of big decisions and important interactions ask yourself, "am I containing the Little Guy?" Develop an internal leadership kata[1] tocontain the Little Guy. Optimize your Inner-Coach – the adversary of the Little Guy. Perform Hansei (self-reflection). Use the 3 Questions of the After-Action Review to do this. What was supposed to happen? What actually happened? What will I commit to do next time to improve the outcome? Approach everything with Shoshin – the Beginner's Mind.Three - Read the book, “The Wise Advocate the Inner Voice of strategic leadership”, by Art Kleiner, Jeffrey Schwartz, and Josie Thompson.Four - Develop a Life Purpose that is noble, a Life Vision, and a personal Code of Ethics.Five - Gain input, advice, and feedback from a mentor, or personal board of advisors.Six - Practice, practice, practice.Key ToolsWrite us at info@tplshow.org for a free guide on how to contain the Little Guy.“The Wise Advocate the Inner Voice of strategic leadership”, by Art Kleiner, Jeffrey Schwartz, and Josie Thompson.Full Show Notes & Transcript - https://www.dropbox.com/s/n7i7dldups0983l/Show%20Notes%20%26%20Transcript%20for%20Episode%2010%20-%20The%20Little%20Guy.pdf?dl=0 Episode Transcript[00:00] Luke: Everybody. Rather than loving and honouring ourselves, we very often judge and criticise, and generally give ourselves a hard time. We push ourselves to ridiculous limits to excel, prove ourselves or compete with others to gain recognition and acknowledgment. It takes a whole lot more than the occasional pampering to count as truly loving and honouring ourselves, being there for and really treasuring ourselves. It’s time to stop neglecting, abusing and punishing ourselves, ignoring our own needs and soul desires, and pleasing others to project a thoughtful and caring nature and instead, find the right balance between devoting time, care and energy towards ourselves and others. And the best way to know whether we are loving ourselves as we must or being narcissistic, is to uncover this truth at the Soul or Spirit/Consciousness level. Helen can expertly show you how to connect and commune with these highest aspects of yourself, as she has done for thousands over the years. She will introduce you to your own Inner Coach or Guru at powerful monthly Zoom sessions: www.transformandthrive.com You can sign up here or write to her at enquiries@leeheiss.com for further information. KEY TAKEAWAYS At this time it has become obvious that we must not only introduce and acquaint ourselves to/with our spiritual selves but to incrementally merge with the highest aspects of who we are, as life pushes our personal and global imbalances to the fore, forcing us to address them or perish. We can and must grow beyond these imbalances. Self love is the portal through which we can access our own Soul Power and the power of the Spirit or Consciousness that we all are. The "Triple S Wisdom" created by Helen as an integral part of her unique coaching methodology encapsulates who we really are and how we are connected to the rest of our Universe and all of Existence. When we experience this firsthand, as Helen facilities for her clients, we can systematically align with from any of these Sources (which are one single Source), we can function optimally (as a hologram of this Creator Source or Self) and be our Greatest Self, more and more. Great technology lies within us, within our physical body as well as our energy field and the planet's energy field and the Universe we are in. If we realise that we are, in fact, Soul and Spirit or Consciousness we can increasingly embody these highest aspects of who we are and be there for ourselves from such an elevated level that we will feel loved like we have never been loved before and be truly joyful. By being totally in love with our human self we can merge effortlessly with our Soul Self, and then the Spirit or Pure Consciousness that we are. When more and more of us do this, our oftentimes arduous evolutionary process will be a lot more fun and enjoyable, and we would be lovingly supporting each other on our very special journey to being our most powerful and wisest Selves. We can greatly transform and thrive together at many levels. BEST MOMENTS ‘This is the case because all imbalances within us, in our lives, and in the world are being pushed to the surface so that we can correct them and grow way beyond them. They will be magnified and shoved in our faces until we transform from deep within ourselves, make all the necessary changes to the point we get it all right.’ ‘Let me reiterate why this is the case. The idea is to have the highest aspects of who we are, our Soul and Spirit or Consciousness, love and support our human self, as if the human self is the unconditionally loved child.’ ‘This beats continuing to be confined to being only our human selves that operate from a large number of fears and insurmountable inadequacy and self doubt that are hidden just beneath the surface and easily brought to the fore.’ ‘Now is the time of reckoning when many of us are being confronted in a big way, as to how we have not been vigilant about taking good care of ourselves. And we are being shown, at least some of us are, how we need to exercise compassion with ourselves and practise extreme self care as well.’ ‘To shorten the process and quicken the pace of coming into Oneness with the highest aspects of who we are, I have been facilitating for others to seemingly step into and then deliberately merge with soul. I have had great success with this and teach people to be able to do this for themselves.’ ''Once, when I facilitated for a client to experience his Soul first hand, he felt what was like a “coming Home” and “SOOOO Much Love” that it made him spontaneously cry." ‘There is a lot at stake and let's play big. Let's go for broke and be our Greatest Selves. Let's tap into the magnificent Souls and Spirit, the Consciousness and Universe that we are, and merge so totally with it all, that we also embody the Magnificence and Power of these awesome aspects of who we are now.' Now that we're into December, most of us are racing to wrap up the year at work. And this is the time of year when most companies ask us to start capturing our accomplishments as part of the annual performance review most companies follow. It usually begins – at least in the U.S. – with entering your accomplishments into the system to see how you tracked against the goals you set earlier in the year. This then becomes the basis for a performance discussion, usually in the very early part of the following year. So, this was the topic of one of my sessions with a newer private coaching client earlier this week. My client was promoted into an executive role this past Spring and since then, in her words, she's struggled a bit. In fact, that's why she came to me in the first place. In the early days of her new role, she felt like she had stumbled – both in her relationships with some of her new colleagues and on one of her first big assignments. So, she wasn't happy, and she'd spent a lot of time beating herself up. And when she got tired of that, she reached out and we started a coaching series aimed at quieting her Inner Critic. And while she feels she's recovered a bit and worked her way into some recent wins, this end of the year accomplishment exercise brought up all the memories of her earlier struggles. All she could think about was her struggles and stumbles and that, in her mind, she wasn't performing as perfectly as she would've liked. And she was worried about what the new boss was going to say.Now this is one of my clients who's a super high achiever but who also has a super active inner critic. And so, as she recollected all the earlier struggles, her Inner Critic kicked into high gear, telling her things like “you're not up to the task” and “you're going to fail” and her general feelings of “not being good enough.”For her, this thought pattern is deeply entrenched. And at earlier stages of her career, she found that her Inner Critic kind of spurred her on. It generated feelings of anxiety and self-doubt, but she found it easier to push past those and keep going when she had a more junior or less visible role. Now that she's an executive, that same inner critic is still there, alive, and well. But NOW, the feelings of anxiety and self-doubt it produces are much more disruptive. She's not sleeping. She's over thinking and obsessing. She's isolating from friends. She's procrastinating on important initiatives. All so she can stew about those earlier-in-the-year mistakes which she is making mean that she's already been exposed as the fraud her Inner Critic keeps telling her that she is. And since she's now an executive, she fears everyone is about to learn “the truth” about her…that she's a fraud. So, the work we'll be doing over the next several weeks is working on how to turn down the volume on the Inner Critic and turn up the Inner Coach. And I thought this would be relevant to so many of you because our “Inner Critic” series – episodes 6 – 9 are some of the most popular of the podcast. So, if you're interested in better understanding your Inner Critic, you might want to go back and give those a listen. But in this episode, we're going a bit deeper and I'm going to share some exercises you can do to build up your Inner Coach. And to learn how to shift from the Critical Talk Track to the Coach Talk Track in real time. For more, give the episode a listen.
