Six-time Grammy winner, Nashville Songwriters Hall of Famer, and Kennedy Center honoree Amy Grant joins us to chat about the pursuit of honesty in songwriting, the stories behind some of her songs, and her catalog of modern day Christmas classics. PART ONEPaul and Scott chat about the idea of a "definitive" version of a Christmas song, discuss their favorites, debate about Christmas songs they love and hate, and delve into Scott's elementary school crush on Amy Grant. PART TWOOur in-depth interview with Amy GrantABOUT AMY GRANTPerhaps the most influential pioneer of the Contemporary Christian Music genre, Amy Grant released her first album while still in high school. Her fourth album, 1982's Age to Age, found unprecedented success with hit singles such as “Sing Your Praise to the Lord” and “El Shaddai.” Age to Age topped the Christian album chart for 85 weeks, earned Amy her first Grammy award, and became the first Christian album to be certified Platinum by the RIAA. Her 1984 album Straight Ahead spawned hits with Amy's original compositions “Thy Word” and “Angels,” and became the first Christian album to land on the Billboard 200. By the mid-1980s, she further crossed over to mainstream success when “Find a Way,” which she wrote with Michael W. Smith, hit the Top 40 on Billboard's pop chart. The following year, Amy reached the top of the pop chart with “The Next Time I Fall,” a duet with Peter Cetera. Her 1991 album Heart in Motion sold 5 million copies and spawned four Top 10 singles on the Billboard Hot 100, including the self-penned hits “Baby Baby” and “Every Heartbeat.” That same year, she enjoyed another Top 10 pop hit as a songwriter with Michael W. Smith's “Place in This World.” Amy continued to find mainstream success in the mid-1990s with singles such as “House of Love,” a duet with her now-husband Vince Gill, as well as the songs “Lucky One” and “Takes a Little Time,” which she wrote with Keith Thomas and Wayne Kirkpatrick, respectively. Starting with 1983's A Christmas Album, holiday music has been an important part of Amy Grant's artistry. She has since released the albums Home for Christmas, which was certified three-times Platinum; A Christmas to Remember; Tennessee Christmas; and The Animals' Christmas, a collaborative album with Art Garfunkel featuring songs by Jimmy Webb that explore the nativity story from the perspective of the animals. Amy's original songs “Tennessee Christmas” and “Breath of Heaven” have become modern day holiday standards. Her Christmas concerts, often featuring husband Vince Gill and longtime collaborator Michael W. Smith, have become a holiday tradition. To date, Amy has released twenty studio albums and has sold over 30 million records worldwide. Seventeen of her albums have reached #1 on Billboard's Top Christian Albums chart, more than any other artist in history. She has won 6 Grammy awards, 26 Dove awards, and has been inducted into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame. Amy has received honorary doctorates from two universities, has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2021. She was a recipient of the prestigious Kennedy Center Honors for lifetime artistic achievement in 2022.

Welcome to episode 55 of Holly Jolly X'masu! In this episode, I'll be Yumi Matsutoya's Christmas songs. When it comes to Japanese Christmas music, there are a handful of really key artists. Over the past forty years, one of the most influential is Yumi Matsutoya. She's certainly not the most prolific when it comes to Christmas music, but she helped to revive public interest, and she furthered the success of Japanese Christmas pop songs. While original Christmas pop songs were being written in Japan as early as the 1950s, until the late 1970s they were more the exception than the rule. From 1978 to 1983, a string of Christmas hits written by young Japanese pop and rock artists helped convince the public and the music industry that there was more to Christmas than “Jingle Bells,” “Rudolph,” and Bing Crosby. Yuming was one of the most successful of the bunch. From 1974 to 2002, Yuming regularly produced Christmas, or Christmassy songs. “MISSLIM,” “Streamline ‘80” and “Surf and Snow” were albums I bought or knew about early on. I found out about the others as I researched her more. I've bought copies of most of the albums featuring her Christmas songs, but the rest came from her “Seasons Colours Song Collection” 4-CD set. I was eager to talk about her music and the impact it has had. One of the things I enjoyed most about researching her was finding videos of some of her old performances. She's always had a great stage presence, but it's the older videos, particularly from the 70s and 80s, that I enjoy the most. One I regret not being able to find was a video of her performing “Christmas Waiting At The Lodge” while riding a ski lift. It's from a late-70s or early-80s television special, and it reminded me of one of John Denver's specials from the same period. Christmas Waiting At The Lodge Let's Move In Together Before The Diamond Dust Fades Angel Cryin' X'mas Wings Of Winter Snow, Moon And Flowers December Rain I hope you've enjoyed Yumi Matsutoya's music. If you'd like to hear more from her, there's plenty to be found online. A lot of unauthorized videos have been taken down lately, but she has her own YouTube channel and more music is being added there regularly. Her Christmas music is just the tip of the iceberg. Join me back here on the 25th for my third Christmas In July episode. I don't expect it to be late, but I've run into a lot of snags, including delays to my latest order of records, so there's a chance it won't hit until the 26th. I have a great selection of summery Christmas songs lined up and you're sure to enjoy them. As always, any feedback on this episode would be appreciated. If have any suggestions, or if you'd like to recommend a song or album for a future episode, drop me a line and let me know. Remember, I've added a button to my Ko-fi page. If you'd like to support me one cup of coffee at a time, a donation is only $3. I've also opened a Redbubble store. I only have a couple designs up, but keep an eye on it as I'll be trying to add more. Half of any proceeds or donations received will be donated to support the people of Ukraine, while the rest will be used to purchase new Japanese Christmas music to review for future episodes. You can also find me on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. And if you get a chance, leave me a review on iTunes. Thanks!

What song had the longest journey ever to become #1? It's Mariah Carey’s All I Want For Christmas is You. #BehindTheChristmasHits is Presented by Pizza Pizza! It was 1993 and Mariah’s then husband and head of her record company, Tommy Mottola, began strategizing with his team about her next career move. To everyone’s surprise, they decided a Christmas album was the way to go. Mariah couldn’t understand why. Her most recent album, Music Box, had been her biggest success yet - the album sold more than 28 million copies worldwide. An album of Christmas standards felt like a project for way further down the road and not for someone who had only been a pop star for about 3 years. She thought they were way off with this, but the idea eventually tapped into something that had been present in Mariah since she was a child. Her Christmas spirit. Mariah LOVES Christmas. Something she credits her mom for in those early years. Mariah eventually came around, but instead of just doing covers of familiar songs, Mariah wanted to write something new, and now suddenly, the record label was nervous... but you try telling Mariah Carey “no". Tommy Mottola wanted something more uptempo – something “rock and roll” like Phil Spector did with Darlene Love and the Ronettes back in 1963. Mariah has said her true of love of Christmas comes from the hope that’s in the holiday. And that’s where the lyrics of this next song would come from. She began to make a list of all the things she had thought of since childhood but then flipped those feelings into lyrics about lost love. It started as a Christmas song that turned into a love song and then back into a Christmas song. Mariah says she was in her upstate NY home and put on her copy of It’s a Wonderful Life and blasted it through the house. She went into a room where she kept a Casio keyboard. Mariah is very honest about this – she says she’s a terrible piano player, but sometimes happy accidents happen…and one did here. She kind of stumbled on the melody and chord progression and recorded it on a cassette recorder. Mariah’s account of how the song was written differs from her former songwriting partner, Walter Afanasieff. They had worked together on every album of hers to this point. Mariah told Entertainment Weekly that when she brought the song to Walter, she had already written most of it. Walter says he and Mariah were actually in the room together while he was “plucking it out on the piano.” Walter’s version is that he took care of the melody while Mariah worked out the lyrics. Unfortunately, the two had a falling out over 20 years ago and haven’t spoken since. When it was recorded in the summer of ‘94, Mariah had every square inch of the studio decorated. Trees, ornaments, candles, lights up on the windows – even the temperature was turned way down. Mariah wanted the song to feel like something she could’ve grown up listening to – something you couldn’t help but be happy listening to. No band actually plays on the song. It was entirely constructed on Walter’s computer. The only things that were added were the voices of Mariah & her back-up singers. It’s rare that a song grows in popularity almost every single year. After it was released on October 28 1994, All I Want for Christmas is You peaked at #13 on the Billboard Hot 100. On December 16, 2019, it finally reached the top of that chart, setting a record for the longest trip ever to get to #1. It was also the first time a Christmas song has been #1 on the Hot 100 since The Chipmunk Song in 1958. It also became Mariah’s first #1 hit since 2008 and her 19th overall. And it’s the biggest-selling Christmas song on digital platforms ever. Mariah told the NY Times that after picking it apart for years, she’s finally at a place where she can enjoy it. As for Walter, despite the falling out with Mariah, he pinches himself every year when the song becomes a hit all over again. “My ex-wives, my children and my grandchildren are enjoying a lot of nice things because of that song.” Whose version of who wrote what and where is closer to the truth? It probably doesn’t matter – Mariah and Walter share equal song writing credit and unlike some other Christmas classics, no lawsuits have ever been filed over it. Mariah calls co-writing this song one of her greatest achievements. That’s not hyperbole. Unless you’re old enough to remember Bing Crosby’s White Christmas when it was brand new in 1942 – there isn’t a Christmas song since that’s done what Mariah Carey’s has. Behind The Christmas Hits is Presented by Pizza Pizza! Mariah Carey Merry Christmas: Columbia Records 1994

Own It! For Entrepreneurs. Talking Digital Marketing, Small Business, Being Digital Nomads and Success Thinking

How do you go about New Year resolutions/intentions? What methods do you use? Judith shares two resources she’s discovered and Nicola’s whittled her plans down to just three...   In The Show Nicola describes her mammoth journey home to the UK for Christmas and tells Judith why she’s still here. Her Christmas was nice, her step-father joined the family for the day, she’s caught up with friends including Kim who she’s helping with Facebook Ads, and she and Phoebe have been for Reiki treatments. Judith enjoyed her family on Christmas Day too and then visits from friends on 27th and 28th December. She completed the 21 Day tapping challenge and she’s been thinking about how she wants to show up in her business and in her writing in 2019.   What's Fuelled Their Fire? Judith received lots of lovely unsolicited testimonials which she found very encouraging, including one about the podcast which she shared with Nicola during the show. Nicola’s been studying with Andre Chaperon, specifically his new course Lean Business for Creators which is about service not selling.   Focus Of The Week How do you go about New Year resolutions/intentions? What methods do you use? What systems have Nicola and Judith used? Judith shares two resources she’s discovered and enjoyed and which have provoked lots of New Year-type thinking and Nicola’s whittled her plans down to just three; Clicks And Leads Academy, her new passion project and her own sci-fi creative writing. Do share your plans for 2019 in the Own It! Facebook Group – free to join.   Words Of The Week Nicola chooses Family (good) and Judith picks Tapping.   Project Updates During the break, Nicola has launched WritingClubWorld.com and was thrilled to be on Bing within 24 hours and attracting writers from all over the world. She’s describing it as her passion project but Judith goes as far as to say that she thinks this could be The One, given how people are so much more interested in what they want right now - their lives and their hobbies and passions - as compared to what they need. Unusually Judith has also launched something new for her clients in 2019 – Crazy Bespoke. She noticed that she was offering clients the opportunity to buy either a year or an hour, so she thought she’d introduce something in between and invited them to get in touch and describe their bespoke needs, their brief and their budget, so she can quote accordingly.   Who Or What's Impressed Nicola is very definitely not impressed with her relatively new iPhone but she loved Luther and she IS impressed with Phoebe’s health plans for Dry January and her taking exercise daily. Judith is also impressed by her family, specifically her brother who has lost 12kg low carbing and had a new strategy for keeping the peace on Christmas Day.   Thanks for listening! In this episode we discuss tapping into your willpower, the resolutions we’re keeping ourselves, what to do when you’re on an  (yep), the REAL timeline of making new habits (cool resources on that  and , and a shout out to ) and why we love songs like  by . There’s a huge focus on making good choices and a new take on how to do that. And let’s not forget, we all need a little help from our friends. If this still doesn’t get you amped up about how to make your life better in 2015,  for a bit of tough love.  If you are gonna keep your resolutions, habits - whatever you prefer to call them, we recommend a bit of creative help. Our friends at  have everything you need.  And finally we chat about a challenging question - what’s a girl to do about birth control when she doesn’t love to use hormones? It’s a Q & A that involves ,  and more. We talk a bit about how to understand our natural cycles as well; we love  and if you don’t know much about what had been called “Natural Family Planning,” it’s now called . Finally,  about periods.  Warning: Sometimes we use bad language. We’re guilty of potty mouth (actually it’s mostly Rachel). More on your hosts and keeping in touch: Joy has great teeth (seriously, dentist confirmed) and crazy good luck when bargain shopping. On Sundays she spends a few hours connected to Oprah watching  to get her ready for the week ahead. In the treatment room she’ll help you figure out what’s really underlying that ailment with her superpowers of asking amazing questions. Connect directly via twitter .  Rachel binge watches TV on Netflix and talks like a “valley girl”. Her favorite meal is dessert; anything in the cake or cookie family and she’d have dessert three times a day if there were no adverse effects. In the treatment room she’ll make you laugh and cry at the same time; it will be an amazing catharsis. If you want to connect directly hit us up on twitter  #TSWRachel and Joy or Sam will get the message to our behind-the-times social media girl. Sam cooks very little though her specialty, “Cheddarwurst,” is a Third Space Wellness family favorite. She knows which board game is on the up and up and throws amazing parties. Her Christmas lights never come down because we need holiday cheer and good light year-round. In her yoga classes she’ll help you appreciate your body’s strength and connect you a new BFF all the same time; she’s a crazy good connecter.
