Today I’m chatting with autism mom Nicole Gottesmann, all about her amazing son, Gabe. I am SO excited to welcome Nicole as guest. Ever since I started following her on social media, I have been so inspired by her story. Nicole is such an incredible and strong mother, I know you will be inspired too! Nicole started her motherhood journey as a single parent after Gabe’s father tragically passed away while she was pregnant. Despite her immense grief, Nicole says she had never been happier once Gabe was born. However, it was around his first birthday that she began to worry he wasn’t meeting milestones. Soon after, Gabe was diagnosed with ASD. Nicole talks about how difficult that time was and how her perspective on autism has shifted over the years. Gabe is now a ‘tween’ and Nicole shares how amazing it is to see him flourish. She also shares how meeting her partner, Caroline, changed everything for both her and Gabe. As Nicole says “two moms are better than one!” I loved chatting with Nicole and hearing all about Gabe’s new skills, like riding a bike and singing songs. I truly admire Nicole’s strength and bravery. I hope enjoy listening to our wonderful conversation! This week, Aarika chose Moms Who Drink and Swear by Nicole Knepper! (which, to be fair, is basically how she lives her best mom life. No shame.)If you feel like your kids are killing you, you’ve come to the right place. This irreverant, hilarious guide to the trials of motherhood makes the perfect gift for mom—or any woman with a huge heart and a mouth that sometimes needs washing out with soap.Attention all potty-mouthed, cheap-wine-drinking mothers: Prepare to meet your match. Any bad thought you’ve had about your kids, Nicole Knepper has had worse. Much worse. It’s not that she doesn’t love her kids. It’s that she understands what a mind-f*?% it can be to try to civilize those wild little beasts.Based on her hugely popular Facebook page, “Moms Who Drink and Swear,” this book reveals why family dinners are like herpes, how to avoid smashing toys that are being fought over, and the joy of hearing that your son has murdered his imaginary friend. As Nicole rants and raves about caring for children (without crushing their souls), family togetherness (without too many tears), the saving grace of girlfriends (and vodka), and love and marriage (and all the baggage that goes with them), she gets to the heart of what every exasperated mom is thinking, just much funnier.Be sure to follow us, download our episode, drop a comment, send a message, send a dove, whatever you want!twitter @2BluestockingsInstagram two.blue.stockingsfacebook two blue stockings podcastGmail two.blue.stockings.books@gmail.comTo purchase the book, use this link here (we do receive a small commission, but it does not affect your price):https://amzn.to/3lZJFtVSupport the show (https://www.patreon.com/twobluestockings)

Nicole Mahoney shares experience with these issues, and she talks about the different ways her team is working together to live out the ‘equitable’ core value within their company. Learn what we can do to explore, understand, and act on the topic of diversity in the travel and tourism industry. In light of recent events in the United States that sparked severe racial unrest, the opportunity to have this conversation could not have come at a better time. Looking into the Mirror With racial injustice sweeping the country right now, it is hard to focus on more than race. In the travel and tourism industry alone, racial diversity is a major issue, and it goes all the way to the leadership level of top organizations. As Nicole started to think about this, she realized that even her own company is guilty of homogeneity. Nicole didn’t build a team of white women on purpose, and there was no discrimination in the hiring process—she just didn’t receive a diverse applicant pool. But that is how she and her team *used* to think. After the death of George Floyd, they decided to take a proactive approach to diversity instead of leaving it to circumstance. A Deep Dive into the Unknown At first, Nicole and her team weren’t quite sure how to address the issue of diversity in their company and industry. But after exhausting every resource and contact they could pull from their network, a plan started to materialize. They used their ‘equitable’ core value as a framework and starting point in their exploration of systemic racism and diversity in the United States. The team figured out where they were living that core value, and where they were falling short. And as a result, the discoveries they made will shape the policies and actions of the organization as a whole, impacting existing team members, future team members, and clients alike. This week Jess and Rye share a special episode with Nicole Miller: founder of @racemvmt –a platform founded on the principles that in order to create sustainable transformation in our communities (removing cultural, racial and economic disparities) we must change the way we approach the world by changing the way we move in this world. We must analyze all definitions of the word “movement” and apply it to ourselves. The goals of @racemvmt: - Create space for diverse communities to move together and unite the Black community & its allies to dismantle systemic racism - Integrate resources to move minds and bring focus to everyday wellness This conversation includes a look at: How Nicole went from idea to execution, launching @racemvmt in 17 days (following the death of George Floyd) The idea of impact vs intention Why it is so hard to talk about race // confronting our unconscious bias’s around race The importance of holding ourselves accountable to be better than the society we grew up in What being an ally means to Nicole What performance allyship means and looks like What anti-racism should involve Advice for having tough, uncomfortable conversations What’s next for Nicole and Racemvmt MORE ABOUT NICOLE & RACEMVMT racemvmt.org @nicolehmiller Nicole Miller is a proud Black woman and in 2020 she felt more inspired and required than ever before to use her platform, her voice, her experiences to shed light on suppressed, but very prevalent aspects of her own life. She has felt the pain of not being heard. Of being torn down and criticized. But she has a voice and chose to use it. To take a stand, to uplift, to build and to educate! To “do the work” required to address racial injustice and create sustainable transformation in our communities. As such she created a platform called RACEMVMT and in just a few weeks, she manifested dreams she didn’t know imaginable, and brought to life a call to action with almost 1,000 active participants that requires all of us to support in order to grow. Nicole was raised in Denver, Colorado but moved around starting as an early teen. These diverse experiences contribute to her fundamental belief that racial justice is intricately intertwined with the balance of mindfulness, and desire to educate and be more informed than the society in which you may have grown up in. Her journey into wellness and diversity inclusion began with an adventurous spirit and an insatiable desire to connect- physically/mental/emotionally to self and those around her. Her fearless spirit allowed her to cultivate relationships in several circles and understand more thoroughly the impact and benefits of mindful movement. Through coaching and training, she found immense joy in empowering clients to find their strength and confidence to reach beyond their comfort zone, making progress every time they step in the room. However, she often found that Black and underserved communities were not included in these spaces or conversations surrounding wellness, health and fitness. As Nicole began to delve into the lack of diversity and inclusion within the wellness space, she became even more passionate about education and awareness for the diversity gap. This sparked an even greater purpose- to see change she needed to create change… and so RACEMVMT was born. The time is now to come together in solidarity. The time to be actively anti-racist and move away from selective ignorance. The time to do the work in creating sustainable transformation within our communities for our future generations. Sometimes the hardest thing, and the right thing are the same thing.

Have you ever come home from a long day at your corporate job and realized like, “Okay, so my job is feeding my family, but definitely not my soul.” What do you do? Well, today's Proof to Product guest is telling us how she figured it out. By age 28, Nicole Walters was a highly-paid executive at a Fortune 500 company, managing multibillion dollar accounts, but something wasn’t right. So Nicole quit her corporate job, and she made waves when she quit in front of 10,000 people while live streaming on Periscope. She went on to open her own private business and product development consulting firm, The Monetized Life.  As Nicole’s audience ramped up so did her revenue—she made $11,000 in the first three weeks of working with small business clients full time. Now, when she’s not hanging out with her husband and their three foster kids, she shares her secrets to earning “passive income” with other entrepreneurs through her wildly popular online course, 1K1Day. “I teach people how to add commas to their bank accounts,” says Nicole. “They learn that they don’t have to trade time for money.” On today's episode, Nicole and I sit down to talk about common mistakes she sees eager entrepreneurs making and why old school sales strategies still work. We also talk about why you can't rely solely on social media for sales, the importance of having multiple revenue streams and why you need to treat your business like a business from day one.  ON TODAY’S EPISODE:  Common mistakes Nicole sees eager entrepreneurs making Tips on where to focus your marketing time and money The problem of relying on social media platforms  Benefits of sticking with the old school methods What really gets customers in the door How to make a 40-50 hour work week feel like 4 hours The lessons Nicole took from corporate life and applied as an entrepreneur Her strongest marketing tool today Nicole’s favorite success stories How saying no is a form of self care  Advice for brand new business owners and entrepreneurs experiencing growing pains  The importance of acting like a business from the get-go What success looks like for Nicole today For full show notes and resources, head to https://bit.ly/FromtheArchives SUBSCRIBE To subscribe on iOS, go to the iTunes page and subscribe to Proof to Product. Mother's Quest Podcast
Revisited: Courageous Conversations about Race with Nicole Lee

Mother's Quest Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 3, 2020 57:50

SPECIAL NOTE: As part of my commitment to amplify the voices and wisdom of black women this week, I’m re-releasing key episodes on the podcast feed, including this one, that I think can light our way in our commitment toward anti-racism and racial justice. You can also find these episodes, and others that shine a light on social justice issues from myself and other podcasters, at www.womenpodcastersinsolidarity.com.   Hello and welcome to Episode #27 of the Mother’s Quest Podcast and the first of several I’ll be sharing for an initiative I’ve launched called Women Podcasters in Solidarity. The Initiative is a commitment I’ve made, alongside some other amazing women podcasters, to raise awareness and dollars to uncover and dismantle the ways racism, both conscious and unconscious, are impacting our society. I planned the Initiative after viewing the haunting video of Philando Castile’s death and of his girlfriend Diamond Reynolds and her young daughter in the back of the cop car in its aftermath. But, the events of Charlottesville since then have brought another level of urgency to this effort. I’m so grateful that I found Nicole Lee, an incredible African American woman and mother, as our first guest on this topic, to light the way for how we as mothers, and especially those of us who are white women like myself, can take steps to make a difference, beginning with our own children and our own communities. Nicole is a strategist, executive coach and public policy advocate through her diversity and inclusion consulting firm, Lee Bayard Group, LLC. And she’s a practicing human rights attorney through the Black Movement Law Project she co-founded, which provides legal and strategy assistance to Black Lives Matter protestors and organizations. Social justice and human rights have been part of her character since she was a child where she got her pioneering spirit especially from her own mother, one of the first black women to be ordained in her Christian denomination. Nicole brings her experience as a mother and advocate to training parents in how to have courageous conversations with our children about diversity, inclusion and equity. I had the opportunity to learn from Nicole on a recent webinar on the subject, an overview for a more detailed class launching in September, that was also attended by Mallory Schlabach who offers this week’s dedication. Nicole and I start the episode with shared agreements and intentions for courageous conversation, committing to one another to come to the podcast recording with an open heart, a commitment to move through discomfort and risk imperfection. I vowed not to edit anything out and we both named a shared desire to plant seeds in mothers to raise awareness for themselves and their children. We explored how we can open channels of communication with our children, holding a “growth mindset” for them in relation to diversity, allowing them to make mistakes as they share what’s on their minds and not “shushing” them when they do. Nicole also shared the importance of expressing our values to our children in ways that they understand. When I asked her where we could invest in change, she challenged us to focus on our own communities and to identify some hard conversations we’ve been putting off. She emphasized the importance of introspective work to realize what’s in our way, determine what we need to be “ready” and then go get ready and have them. As it has been for me, I hope this podcast episode, and the links and resources in the show notes, will be part of what you need to get ready to have the brave conversations with your own children and your own communities. As Nicole says at the end of our conversation, “we’ve got this.” We are not being asked to do anything that is not within our grasp. It’s not easy but we can get it done. This Week’s Challenge: Our challenge this week is to go back and process our own patterns and thinking about race, diversity and inclusion, to identify what courageous conversations we’ve been putting off, to get what we need to be ready, and then go have them. Topics discussed in this episode: How having an open heart and articulating intentions create meaningful opportunity for brave conversations about our differences Nicole’s reflection on why many black women may not want to talk with white women about racism and how to seek out spaces, and resources, to explore these issues if you’re white and have genuine intention to learn Nicole’s childhood and how she was driven at an early age to fight for social good An exploration of the E.P.I.C Guideposts in relation to the topic of diversity and inclusion The role mothers have in planting awareness and knowledge in their children that will help transform our society The importance of cultivating real friendships across differences and how color blindness and an unwillingness to have tough conversations can block authentic connection The importance of having a growth mindset in the context of race and not to “shush” our children when they share what’s really on their minds Expressing our values in a way our children will understand Ideas for investing and supporting the Movement for Black Lives and Nicole’s opinion that getting involved locally in advocacy on police relations, and having the hard conversations, in our own communities, are the most important steps we can take. Fashioncast fans, we can’t say enough about Nicole Jarecz a young and extremely talented artist with an old soul for fashion illustration.  It’s a fascinating interview with Nicole as she delves deep into her experience as an artist including her early years, her education at the College for Creative Studies (CCS), and her “lucky” but unusual path into fashion illustration. Nicole is a busy woman raising two young daughters and working from home.  Nevertheless, she’s found time to illustrate. After ten years as a fashion illustrator, Nicole has completed work for a Who’s Who in the fashion world including Marie Claire, Glamour, Madame Figaro, Macy’s, Lord & Taylor, Neiman Marcus, and Hugo Boss just to name a few!  In addition, she’s in high demand to sketch at many fashion openings and exhibitions in and around the Detroit area. In this interview, you’ll discover new information about the use of fashion illustration in marketing versus photography, how to leverage a niche vocation, and the importance of pursuing your passion.  As Nicole mentions, given the technological advances in photography and design, fashion illustration is a dying art. But, with creative talent like Nicole’s, we can all experience fashion through a different form of art. ON TODAY’S EPISODE:  Common mistakes Nicole sees eager entrepreneurs making Tips on where to focus your marketing time and money The problem of relying on social media platforms  Benefits of sticking with the old school methods What really gets customers in the door How to make a 40-50 hour work week feel like 4 hours The lessons Nicole took from corporate life and applied as an entrepreneur Her strongest marketing tool today Nicole’s favorite success stories How saying no is a form of self care  Advice for brand new business owners and entrepreneurs experiencing growing pains  The importance of acting like a business from the get-go What success looks like for Nicole today KEY TAKE-AWAYS:   “If the only place that you're selling is on your social media platform, well guess what? It's not yours. You don't own it.” - Nicole Walters “Word of mouth is still good. So all that matters that you're actually able to get to people who have mouths and are able to spread the word. Old School still works.” - Nicole Walters “Make sure that you're telling your story authentically and being honest about who you are. Because if you do that, if you tell your true story, well guess what? You'll never get it wrong.”  - Nicole Walters “Wear your heart on your sleeve, because it's that same heart that'll put cash in your pocket.” - Nicole Walters “It was time for me to quit and I decided to do in grand fashion. I decided that I wasn't just going to burn the bridge behind me. I was going to singe it and blow away the ashes.” - Nicole Walters “I was ready to become an entrepreneur. So instead of taking those tools to fat cats at multi-billion dollar companies, I'm taking them to everyday entrepreneurs who are using them to feed their families and their souls.” - Nicole Walters “I get to see the change and the transition and the transformation in people's families and livelihoods. Being able to really put money into people's pockets instead of watching it go to a new Gulfstream jet or a new golf membership at a country club, you know, it's really, really rewarding. And I love it.” - Nicole Walters “I’ll be the first one to tell you if I'm doing my job well, guess what? We shouldn't work together forever.” - Nicole Walters “Look at the quarterlies, look at your revenue and your expenses, all of it. There might be certain quarters that are slow, but if you can plan for that and know about that in advance, it just sets you up for the longterm.“ - Katie Hunt “I'm a mom and I'm married and the other side of it is honestly, I couldn't keep up with my business if I didn't get healthy. That's the reality of it.”  - Nicole Walters “There's this misconception of self care, that it’s going and getting a manicure and/or like, you know, or going to get coffee or whatever and it's like self care comes in so many different forms.” - Katie Hunt “I'm allowed to say no to things that don't serve me because if I say no, then I'm taking care of the things that do serve me. And that is a form of self care.” - Nicole Walters “You want to seize opportunities, but at the same time you need to protect your time and your sanity.” - Katie Hunt “Act like a business if you want to get paid like one, get out there and get your legal stuff in order. Make sure that you understand the importance of finances, quick books, getting all that stuff done and I know it's big and scary.” - Nicole Walters “The minute you take a dollar, you are acting like a business and you need to get paid like one.” - Nicole Walters “Sometimes we get in our own way, we overthink things or we don't relinquish control when we need to or we're afraid to bring on more team members to handle things because we think nobody can do it the way we can.” - Katie Hunt  LINKS Website: http://nicolewalters.tv Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/MonetizeThyself/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/nicolewalters/  Periscope: https://www.periscope.tv/NapturalNicole Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/napturalnicole Twitter: https://twitter.com/napturalnicole     SUBSCRIBE To subscribe on iOS, go to the iTunes page and subscribe to Proof to Product. My guest for The Happy Hour #212 is Nicole Zasowski. Nicole is a licensed marriage and family therapist in Connecticut where she lives with her husband, Jimmy and her son, James. As an old soul who wears her heart proudly on her sleeve, Nicole also enjoys writing about her story and the way she sees God moving and molding her through it. Her first book is due to come out in January 2020! Alright friends, get your hearts ready because on today's show Nicole and I talk about feelings. Whether you're cringing or leaping with joy at this news, I promise this show is for you and you will be encouraged by her words. As Nicole shares at the start of the show, we can't believe the lie that no one can understand our pain because we all at some point experience pain ... and, we all have strategies we use to try protect ourselves from pain. Nicole shares her own story of how she realized her self-protection strategies were no longer working. It started with a cross-country move 7 years ago, and since then she has also had to walk through 5 miscarriages in just 4 years. She admits that it was hard to face that her strategies weren't the answer, but when she was truly honest with herself and others, she started to "find a way through, not a way out" of the pain. Nicole also offers specific advice on how to walk along side a friend going through hard times. In the second half of the show, Nicole explains more about the Restoration Therapy model she uses that focuses on how we each have encountered love and trust. She also fills us in on what those protection strategies we use can look like. You guys, I think we can all identify ways we stuff our feelings or protect ourselves from pain. But, as Nicole said, our short term solution is just creating long-term pain. God does not love us any less when we grieve or hurt. He loves us through ALL of it, and He already knows our hearts. I loved talking with Nicole today, and I hope that you feel encouraged in the freedom you can experience when we are honest with God, ourselves, and each other! {You can listen to the show HERE, and make sure you never miss a Happy Hour - subscribe using your favorite podcast app (ie. iTunes, Google Play).  And of course, I would love if you would share with your friends!} Links from the Show Nicole's website The Hideaway Experience | Marriage Intensives Therapists trained in Restoration Therapy What Nicole is loving: The seven year ballpoint pen, University of Washington Husky Football Team What Nicole is reading: She Reads Truth Bible, The Middle Place by Kelly Corrigan, Forgiving God by Hilary Yancey Educated by Tara Westover ERLC National Conference Oct 11-13 - code: happyhour for 30% off tickets Connect with Nicole Facebook // Twitter // Instagram Connect with Jamie + The Happy Hour Facebook // Twitter // Instagram // YouTube Stay connected and subscribe to The Happy Hour Newsletter! Quick: Think of your favorite brand Twitter account, or Instagram, or Super Bowl commercial. What do they have in common? A distinct and memorable brand voice (hello, Old Spice guy). But brand voice is often hard to define, and even more difficult to pin down for your interior design firm. If you find yourself struggling with how to make your voice attractive to clients and consistent across your platforms, then this episode is for you. Joining Natalie and Darla on today’s show is Nicole Heymer, the founder of Curio Electro, a company whose experts work with business owners to create websites that merge beauty with function in order to help them sell services. Curio Electro will help your business establish a web presence that makes a difference. Darla has worked with Nicole to get amazing results, and just 30 minutes of this chat contains so many nuggets that you can take and apply to your brand. If your website needs a facelift or you really want your brand to have a web presence, you will find today’s conversation about brand voice most helpful. What You’ll Hear On This Episode of Wingnut Social [0:42] Why knowing Nicole Heymer gets me compliments [2:20] What is brand voice and how the heck do you get it? [4:45] Yeah, but why does it matter? [7:33] Where do you use your brand voice? [10:10] How to make your Instagram fit your brand voice (and how not to) [12:45] How do you speak to your favorite clients? [15:30} How do you attract top-tier clients if you’re a wingnut? [18:30] Keep your voice consistent across platforms by defining the nitty-gritty [22:00] Moon Pie vs. Little Debbie [25:10] What up, Wingnut? But Nicole says it best: What you say is your messaging, how you say it is your voice. So it’s your tone, the words you choose, and the personality you put into what you’re saying that define your brand’s voice. But why is that important? Because the people you’re talking to have to trust you. And your brand has to sound like someone they trust. The same thing goes for attracting new clients. As Nicole says, if your voice is just kind of “meh,” then no one’s going to remember you, no one’s going to seek you out. If you don’t have any color or flavor in your voice, then no one is going to be drawn to you. If you’re talking to everybody you’re talking to nobody So where do you use this flavorful new brand voice you have? Well, as Nicole says, just about everywhere. You want it in your web copy and in your ad copy, but also if you have products than you might think about your product names reflecting that voice. And one of the genius suggestions Nicole dishes out: Make your call to action reflect your voice. In other words, if you have a button on your site, rather than the boring “submit,” make it something that fits your brand. And you don’t have to do this alone. As Nicole says, if you’re looking to attract high-end clients, you should go to the brands those clients like and see what voice they use. And remember: Every client is a person, too, so you don’t need some magic formula. Today in the guest chair, we have Nicole Walters. By age 28, Nicole was a highly-paid executive at a Fortune 500 company, managing multibillion dollar accounts. But something just wasn’t right. She felt like her job was paying the bills and feeding her family, but not her soul. So, live on Periscope, Nicole quit her corporate job to focus on opening her own private business and product development consulting firm, The Monetized Life. Through her programs and consulting, she shares her secrets to earning “passive income” with other entrepreneurs, including in her popular online course, 1K1Day. Nicole has been on my radar for some time and I thought what better way to kick off 2018, than with a woman who is pushing the boundaries of entrepreneurship and redefining what it means to package your skills into services and make money on your own terms. As Nicole says, she teaches people how to add commas to their bank accounts and learn that they don’t have to trade time for money. On today’s episode, Nicole gets into: Her 5 years of (debt free!) side hustling before quitting Why she quit her job LIVE on Periscope Generating $11,000 from a $12.99 product The streams of income in her business Listen on Apple Podcasts, Soundcloud, Stitcher and Google Play Links mentioned on this episode NicoleWaltersTV Nicole’s Receipts NapturalNicole Slack The Storyteller’s Secret A Second Chance by Catherine Hoke This episode is brought to you by FreshBooks. Ep 27: Courageous Conversations about Race with Nicole Lee

Mother's Quest Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 7, 2017 58:55

I committed to doing this work and to having Nicole join us to continue the conversation and give me an opportunity to check in on my progress in the private Mother’s Quest Facebook Group on Wednesday, September 13th at 11:30 am PST. The focus of the conversation centers on the impact that can be generated through constant iteration and technology experimentation. These tenets of design thinking pervade the school culture and are manifested in coding instruction, environmental design projects, and a Makerspace. Looking through the lens of a Design Tech HS student, there is a clear vision of student success by way of the unique self-discovery and differentiated learning opportunities offered through technology integration. As Nicole stresses, students need to apply their digital experiences in real-world scenarios in order to ensure the highest-level synthesis of learning.

What a great chat with real estate rock star, Nicole Mickle! As two women that have been in real estate for over 20 years, it was awesome getting to share our experiences and tricks we’ve learned over the years in this industry. One of the big differences we have both seen is the role social media has played in influencing the way we generate leads and how we use that to our advantage. Social media is an AWESOME tool for promoting and advertising our business, ourselves, and our listings, but so often what we both hear real estate agents complaining about is how social media doesn’t work for them. It’s not that the platform isn’t working for you, you aren’t working IT! You can’t walk into a party and sit in the corner yet expect everyone to come talk to you! The same applies online. You have to ENGAGE with people in order to establish a connection that will lead you to a sale. As Nicole has proved, it IS possible to generate leads through social media, even Instagram! Nicole’s first Instagram lead was for a $600,000 property! Incredible! Take a listen as Nicole shares some valuable tips for building a reputable reputation online, how to generate quality leads from your target audience, and the importance of establishing open communication with your leads turned clients that will not only land you that sale, but will keep them coming back for more! In the second half of my conversation with best-selling author and former CNN & CNBC anchor Nicole Lapin, we're getting real about finances. You might be itching to become an entrepreneur because of all the perks, but what about the cash? Do you have enough to make it on your own?As Nicole tells us in this episode, the best entrepreneurs are scrappy. It's easy to fantasize over investors throwing cash at you a la Shark Tank, but that kind of start-up money means you basically have a boss. So what can we do to bootstrap this thing on a budget? In this episode, we're diving into exactly that, plus:How to prepare for the un-sexy parts of entrepreneurship (including exactly how much money you should have in the bank) Why "Do it now!" might be the exact wrong advice for starting your businessNicole's 3 "E"s of budgeting, and how much money you should have for your essentials, end game & extras The simple (yet brilliant) daily habit Nicole used to pay off her credit card debt (I'm stealing this one!) We’ve got a serious branding expert on the show this week, and what enthusiasm she has for the whole process. So much great insight here! Nicole Ertas has been in the business for over 20 years and has worked with some massive global brands along the way, including Wrigley’s, Jim Beam and Nestle. She’s also written a great book called Freerange Brands which explains how the big brands are currently being challenged by the more flexible, dynamic, ‘freerange’ brands. Nicole shared with us some great tips about how to build a successful brand, and also gave us a sneak preview of her easy-to-understand audience theory: ** A brand’s audience can be split into four sections: the ‘lords’, the ‘lovers’, the ‘hackers’, and the ‘hawks’. Any successful brand must pay regard to each of these different factions. ** The lords – These are the modern-day influencers, the people who have some kind of a following. The challenge for the brand is how to get their product talked about in the everyday environment these influencers inhabit. ** The lovers – These are the people who really want to connect with the brand and the shared values of the community. ** The hackers – The hackers want to participate and interact with the brand. ** The hawks – The hawks are there to strike if your brand lacks transparency or lets people down with their customer service experience. ** Before any kind of brand planning, first you must define your obsession: who are you and what do you do? ** Then from there you need to express why these values are different to the rest. It’s all about translating these values into a customer experience and making your customers think about more than just price when they see your products. Values and experience are vital. In this episode of Business Brain Food you will learn: ** How Heineken got it right with the repositioning of their brand ** The dangers of only talking about yourself ** How Urban Outfitters uses controversial tactics to succeed ** How to find your brand purpose ** Examples of the best brand experience ** How to measure ‘experience’   Resources mentioned in this episode: ** Nicole’s site: http://www.freerangebrands.com ** Nicole on twitter: http://www.twitter.com/freerangebrands ** Nicole’s book on Amazon here ** Facebook: facebook.com/businessbrainfood ** Facebook group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/businessbrainfood ** Twitter: https://twitter.com/bfewtrell ** iTunes: http://actioncoachanz.com/itunes ** Stitcher: http://actioncoachanz.com/stitcher   As Nicole says, “the best brands in this day and age are designed for unpredictability” Also, if you are enjoying these Business Brain Food podcasts, then make sure to share them via social media sites or email the links to family and friends. A lot of time and effort goes into producing each of these podcasts with the goal in mind of the more people we can inspire about business the better. You can help us do just that! His father’s family came from eastern Poland after being displaced in WWII and his mother’s family came from Bavaria.
