I'll pick up where I left off last week, with the storming of the Bastille and the fall of the "ancien regime." We'll explore how, over the next few years, this new France will become more of a hellscape than a paradise. As a radical group, the Jacobins, seizes control, distopia ensues with the September Massacres of 1792, the "Reign of Terror" spanning 1793 to 1794, and the executions of the monarchy. We'll explore how this chaos paves the way for France's next ruler, Napoleon Bonaparte, to seize power for better or for worse. And, we'll look at 4 takeaway lessons from the French Revolution that we can still learn something from today. Support the show!

Dawn usually records around her kitchen table, but as guest, Kristal Adams, recently had her cars stolen, she instead packed up the recording equipment and headed to Kristal's place near downtown Los Angeles. As it turns out, the quietest and most comfortable place to record was smack in the middle of Kristals bed. Tres bien. 00:03:55 - Dawn goes through Kristal's most exciting credits including as a writer on Legomasters, and The Circle on Netflix, and she promotes her hilarious comedy album Aint I A Wombat. 00:05:12 - Kristal explains to Dawn that her lack of car has been part of the decision to move to New York City - where you don't need one! Dawn likes the idea but gives her some food for thought as she heads into living in her first 'winter climate' state. 00:09:42 - We learn a little bit more about Kristal's French husband, Fabrice, and how he has spurred both her interest in French Literature and her desire to ask ANYONE BUT HIM to tell her about it. Voila! Moi! Dawn explains that since 'French Literature' is such a huge subject, she focused her attention on The Three Musketeers and it's author Alexander Dumas... but of course it all begins with The French Revolution. 00:12:46 - The French Revolution has to precede any in-depth conversation about French Literature because for so much of our most-loved figures it was a central event. From Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette, through the Reign of Terror and past the execution of Robespierre - we give Kristal a lot to chew on around the ol' Fromage Tray. 00:22:52 - Lots of sources generally say the French Revolution ended with the execution of Robespierre in 1794 but in fact there were several more revolutions and, of course, the Emperor Napoleon. 00:30:00 - With some general French History and some specific French Revolution History in our back pocket, we move on to the author of The Three Musketeers, Alexander Dumas... well, we begin with his grandparents actually: A rich white nobleman living in Haiti and an enslaved woman, named Marie-Cesette. Alexander Duma's half-black father has a incredible story of his own - one that led him to glory fighting for France aboard during the Revolution, and earned the ire of none other than Napoleon.00:37:04 - Always feeling in the shadow of his father's greatness, and enduring the rampant racism in Paris himself, Alexander Dumas strived always to be remembered and be loved. Perhaps this is why he had no less than 4 illegitimate children and an estimated 40 mistresses. He attained some fame and wealth -experimented with drugs in a very interesting club with Victor Hugo among others - but ultimately died rather poor in the care of his son. --BREAK--Listen to HIGHTAILING THROUGH HISTORY hosted by Laurel and KT00:41:56 - After the break, we welcome into bed with us The Three Musketeers, D'Artagnan and you, of course - with a quick summary of the swashbuckling tale that has stood the test of time and had some good (and bad) movie versions over the years. 00:55:24 - As the original subject that Kristal assigned Dawn was 'French Literature' they wrap up the conversation with a couple of quick booty calls - one on Victor Hugo, author of Les Miserables. It turns out that the musical had a rather outsized impact on both Kristal and Dawn's youth. 00:59:25 - Dawn wraps up with a tip of the hat to The Marquis de Sade, the man from whom we get the phrase 'sadist' and oh so much more. 01:03:22 - Before extracting herself from Kristal's marital sheets, Dawn leaves her with one last story from the French Revolution - that of the assassination of the bathtub-bound invalid, Jean-Paul Marat at the hands of Charlotte Corday. Not only is it a bloody and interesting story, but it is the inspiration for a play written in the 1970's called: The Persecution and Assassination of Jean-Paul Marat as Performed by the Inmates of the Asylum of Charenton Under the Direction of the Marquis de Sade.

Jean-Paul Marat was a French political theorist, physician and scientist, and, during the French Revolution, a journalist and politician. Initially an advocate of basic human rights for the poor, he became increasingly uncompromising in his stance against the new leaders of the revolution. He was assassinated by Charlotte Corday while taking a medicinal bath, as depicted in the painting The Death of Marat.Pietro Querini was the Italian captain of a merchant ship bound for Bruges, when forced to abandon ship during a storm in 1431. After drifting for weeks in winter weather, the survivors find themselves stranded on an island off of Norway in January of 1432. The eleven men, of the original 68, ended up spending three months in Røst, and in turn originated trade between Italy and Norway. If you are at all familiar with the French revolution you may have come across the painting by Jacques Louis David called ‘The Death of Marat', one of the most famous works of art concerning a revolutionary event. The painting itself depicts the moment of Marat's assasination; he lies in his bath, holding in his hand a letter, his chest pierced, bleeding, stabbed by Charlotte Corday just moments earlier. It is a gorgeous painting, but also a piece of revolutionary propaganda and a true story, and it speaks volumes both in what is shown and what is absent. In this episode find out more about Marat, Why Charlotte stabbed him and what happened to his bathtub. So come with me and let's start by going to the Louvre to see what we can learn from this painting. Historian Dr. Clifford Conner talks about John Paul Marat's unparalleled and unacknowledged influence on the causes and success of the French Revolution—an event Conner describes as arguably the most significant chapter in human history. Conner shares an updated account of his vivid and colorful 1997 book, Jean Paul Marat, only the second English-language biography in the last hundred years of the controversial and often misunderstood French revolutionary.During the program. Dr. Conner compares Marat to persecuted journalist Julian Assange. Like the Wikileaks founder, Marat, the popular and charismatic truth teller, was falsely smeared and accused and arrested. He was forced underground for 3 years until the insurrection of August 10, 1792—the second of the four most significant turning points of the Revolution.Other celebrated and key figures of the French Revolution—Danton, Robespierre, Desmoulins, Hebert, Mirabeau, Freron, Paine, Lafayette—are included in Conner's reflections on Marat's life during this turbulent, world changing epoch. His story concludes with a moment by moment retelling of Charlotte Corday's ghastly murder of the heroic figure.
See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Beyin, insan bedenindeki en hayranlık uyandırıcı organdır. Merkezi sinir sistemimizi kontrol etmesinin yanı sıra, yürümemizi, konuşmamızı, nefes almamızı ve düşünmemizi sağlar. Beyin, aynı zamanda inanılmaz derecede komplekstir; yaklaşık 100 milyar nörondan (sinir hücresi) oluşur. Beyinle ilgili o kadar… Seslendiren: Ekin Baran Sunar

Fran Martone, Jacqueline Arvanitis, & Laura Crawford are in to talk about the Village Players new show The Revolutionists by Lauren GundersonOpening November 8Directed by Fran MartoneFeaturing: Emily Waters, Jacqueline Arvanitis, Laura Crawford and Aimee Reid.Call 419-472-6817Four beautiful, badass women lose their heads in this irreverent, girl-powered comedy set during the French Revolution’s Reign of Terror. Playwright Olympe de Gouges, assassin Charlotte Corday, former queen (and fan of ribbons) Marie Antoinette, and Haitian rebel Marianne Angelle hang out, murder Marat, and try to beat back the extremist insanity in 1793 Paris. This grand and dream-tweaked comedy is about violence and legacy, art and activism, feminism and terrorism, compatriots and chosen sisters, and how we actually go about changing the world. It's a true story. Or total fiction. Or a play about a play. Or a raucous resurrection…that ends in a song and a scaffold. The Village Players is a 100% volunteer-run organization, from the people who staff the ticket counter, run the lights and sound, and stage crew to the actors and directors. If you are interested in volunteering at The Village, please email our Volunteer Coordinator at VPlayers@gmail.com. We accept submissions for shows all year round. These go to our Play-Reading Committee who sort through and read every single show. November 1 is the cut-off date for submissions. Normally, at our December or January board meeting, the Play-Reading Committee submits its selections for the next year, as well as the shows that were not selected. Then comes the hard part. The board reads and rehashes all the work that the committee did and comes to a final consensus on the following season. If you have seen a show that you think we could pull off, heard of one you would like to see done, written one you would like performed, or you have an interest in directing at The Village Players, please do not hesitate to contact. We shall be happy to put it up for consideration.

Charlotte Corday set out on her journey to kill Jean-Paul Marat believing it was the only way to save France. So what made a young woman with no known political connections and no history of violence turn to murder?
In this episode, the ladies discuss Miriam's "White Lady PSA," the incredible talent of Hazel Scott and the notorious acts of Charlotte Corday.
Charlotte Corday grew up poor in French family clinging to its noble status. When the French Revolution started, she strongly believed in peaceful change and liberation, in contrast to the Jacobin party who led the revolution on a platform of violence and executions. What happened to the mild-mannered Corday that led her to murder a leader of the Jacobin party?
For Women's History Month, we will be covering cases committed by women. We each take a case the other may know nothing about and report on it. First up, political assassinations by women. First, we cover Charlotte Corday and the assassination of Marat (And Rebecca recites the history of the French Revolution). Then, Squeaky Fromme and Sarah Jane Moore's attempts on President Ford in what Rachel calls "Manson Family part 4 (And Rachel sings Sondheim.) In this episode you will learn about the unsung hero of the French Revolution and all time bad ass woman Charlotte Corday. I just finished the brilliantly written book 'Paris In The Terror' by Stanley Loomis. The book was published in 1964 and UC Berkeley named it one of the best books of the century. It is a riveting book about the main players of the French Revolution who all get their heads chopped off by the guillotine. In this book I learned about the incredible tale of Charlotte Corday from Caen, France who had never been to Paris before she traveled there at the age of 24 to assassinate Marat, the foul shit stirrer who incited the mob of Paris to violence. This head strong witty young woman from Caen left behind her obscure life to become in one act of vengeance one of the most infamous people of the French Revolution. Her story should be made into a major motion picture but until then let me regal you with this epic tale that you may have never heard before. In this year of women rising up and demanding equality it is a perfect time to be captivated by this woman from provincial France who decided to take matters in her own hands in order to save the glory of her nation. If the sound of dropping guillotine blades and mobs carrying pitchforks excite you then this episode will be a treat. It is my pleasure to present to you now the story of Charlotte Corday and the assassination of Marat! * Become our patron and receive podcast goodies! www.patreon.com/tomrhodesradiosmartcamp * Buy my newest double album All Hail Laughter (2017) tomrhodes.net * More episodes on tomrhodesradio.com * More fun on tomrhodes.net
