On this episode of the Life in the Carolinas podcast, Carl sits down with Charlotte-based pianist and composer Chad Lawson. Ironically, Chad did not grow up in a family that listened to music, much less played instruments. What actually sparked his interest in taking piano lessons was a TV show he grew up on, Sha Na Na, and the rest is history. Chad recalls having his music used a few years back, without his permission, as a background track for the podcast Lore. He reached out to host Aaron Mahnke for a potential collaboration, and the two quickly became friends. Eventually, Lore got picked up by Amazon for a television series written by Glen Morgan of The X-Files fame. As fate would have it, Chad was their one and only choice to be the composer for the series. “All of that stemmed,” Chad reflects, “from my being okay with someone using my music.” He goes on to suggest that other artists be more open to giving other parties an opportunity to use their music. “Within limitations, I want to encourage others to do a little bit of homework, check it out, and be okay with it. [...] You never know what doors open.” Chad’s music, much like his personality, can be characterized as quiet, calm, and soothing. Ever since lockdowns were implemented in the first quarter of 2020, Chad fondly notes the explosion of emails he received from others who told him that his music had been helping them cope with the challenges. “I get those emails almost daily now,” says Chad. “I can’t travel, but I want to be able to engage. I want to get deeper into the grit of life with my listeners. I want to find a way that if I can’t speak to them from stage, how do I speak to them? [...] Why don’t I create something where I’m helping them, emotionally, walk through this?” Chad’s solution? His very own podcast, Calm It Down, a passion piece he created to help ease anxieties, COVID-induced or otherwise. He wanted the podcast to be a space for honesty and transparency, and to dissolve shame around vulnerability. As Chad openly shares from the heart on such topics as depression and suicide, he gives his audience permission to be real in a society whose knee-jerk reaction to tragedy and hardship has 3been, overwhelmingly, repression. “The very first thing we have to do is make people comfortable with awareness. We just have to make the conversation comfortable.” Chad implores us to catch ourselves whenever our self-preservation instincts kick in, when confronted with uncomfortable topics. After all, the hardest step to healing is always the first. “You have to bring the conversation to your audience. That’s how it starts.” Connect with Chad: Chad Lawson - Official Store Calm It Down | Calming & Meditation Podcast (calmitdownpodcast.com) Connect with us: http://www.lifeinthecarolinas.com/ https://www.lifeinthecarolinaspodcast.com/

Driving through a low-income area near his church, Colorado pastor Chad Graham started praying for “our neighbors.” When he noticed a small laundromat, he stopped to take a look inside and found it filled with customers. One asked Graham for a spare coin to operate the clothes dryer. That small request inspired a weekly “Laundry Day” sponsored by Graham’s church. Members donate coins and soap to the laundromat, pray with customers, and support the owner of the laundry. Their neighborhood outreach, which dares to include a laundromat, reflects Jesus’s Great Commission to His disciples. As He said, “I have been given all authority in heaven and on earth. Go, then, to all peoples everywhere and make them my disciples: baptize them in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit” (Matthew 28:18–19 gnt). His Holy Spirit’s powerful presence enables “everywhere” outreach, including even a laundromat. Indeed, we don’t go alone. As Jesus promised, “I will be with you always, to the end of the age” (v. 20 gnt). Pastor Chad experienced that truth after praying at the laundromat for a customer named Jeff who is battling cancer. As Chad reported, “When we opened our eyes, every customer in the room was praying with us, hands stretched out toward Jeff. It was one of the most sacred moments I have experienced as a pastor.” The lesson? Let’s go everywhere to proclaim Christ.

This week’s Misfit Entrepreneur is Chad Peterson. Chad has been a serial entrepreneur going back to when he was a kid. He is the founder of Peterson Acquisitions, a business broker that helps people buy and sell businesses through the U.S. and abroad and his been ranked the #1 business broker in the country. Chad is also the author of multiple best-sellers including From Blue to White: Quit Your J.O.B., A Working Man's Guide to Self-Employment and Swinging Doors. Chad has done deals of all sizes upwards of $550 million and has a created a unique process that can help any business owner prepare and maximize the value of their business, as well as help them in their next great adventure. I’m excited to have him on today to discuss what he’s learned along his Misfit Entrepreneur journey and the principles he can teach you about buying and selling a business. www.PetersonAcquisitions.com https://petersonacquisitions.com/get-the-book/ As Chad says, he got where he is at by sure determination, will, tenacity, and fire in his belly. He went out and did it. But he had his hard times. He was raised in a tumultuous household – no silver spoon. He realized at an early age that “if it’s meant to be, it’s up to me.” He started as young kid knocking on doors and did everything from yard work to walking dogs, odd jobs and more. Anything he could do to succeed, he did it. Chad says, that “those customers taught him more about life than the school system or even his parents. Business raised Chad. He’s had multiple successes and multiple failures. In your book, Blue to White, you open it up by saying that when someone asks you what you do, you tell them, “I live for a living.” Explain that. Too many people get wrapped up in what they do or their title. They wear the mask too much. But, we are not that, we are many things. Chad makes the most out of his life and doesn’t rest on his laurels. Chad’s favorite saying, Live Deliberately” His life is not an accident. It’s thought out. He knows his end goal and his intentionality. What was it that you learned about life from your customers when you were a kid? You have to tell someone what you are going to do and you have to follow through with it. The importance of laser focus. How to conduct business and give good service. How to bill and collect money. How to market yourself and your business. And much more! At the 11:30 mark, Chad talks about his biggest failure in business with his mortgage business and what he took away from it… He got crushed in 2008. He could have sold the company in 2007 for $10 million. Up to 2008, the company was doing incredible. It had 120 employees, multiple locations, and was doing almost a million per month. Then 2008 happened and almost overnight it was all gone. Chad was at the epicenter of the subprime meltdown. He had just expanded and signed new mult-year leases and was basically broke. He didn’t file for bankruptcy though. He lost everything, but ultimately got through it and shut things down without having to do that. It took him 5 years. The lesson learned, “When you’re doing well, it’s the time to sell.” Never wait until you’re not doing well and the ship is sinking to sell. Go out on top. That is when his Peterson Acquisitions was born. “Where there is no passion, there is no profit.” At the 16:38 mark, Chad shares how he does, what he does with clients… First, Chad helps business owners understand what their business is really worth today. As part of that process, tax returns have to be recast to come up with “seller’s discretionary earnings.” Seller’s discretionary earnings are really cashflow and that is the real value of a business. This is adding everything that the business down for them back in – Meals, Travel, etc. Any owner benefit. Once they get the number, they take that and look at the industry to see what the multiple is. Manufacturing can get up to 4x. Service businesses can go as low as 2x. Online businesses can go higher. Additionally, he helps them evaluate where they are psychologically to see if they are ready to move on to their next adventure. How do you do the 2nd part, the discussion around whether someone is psychologically ready to sell their business? The hardest thing to do is to tell people and show them the truth. A lot of brokers need a paycheck – Chad does not at this point. Chad wants to do good business for good people. The key is getting to where the owner is at right now – what is their passion? If it is not a 10 on a scale of 1-10, then it is time to get out. Remember, where there is not passion, there is no profit. People become very emotionally involved in their business or investments. Everybody is replaceable. Sometimes that is the owner. What are things people should be thinking about or doing ahead of time or as they are growing their business to be prepared to sell it? You must have the mindset that your business can and one day will be sold. Make sure you are keeping in contact with a qualified broker and keep up with valuations. Business owners think about selling their business for 1000-2000 hours before they make the decision to even sell. People do this without keeping up at least annually on the valuation of the business and what is worth. You can’t make a decision if you don’t know what your business is worth. What are the elements of a great deal? How does someone know that deal that is put together is a good one for them for their business? A good deal starts with a good seller and a good buyer. Chad’s job is not to sell people on the idea of selling their company, it’s to sell the company. You must be serious about selling as an owner. Business owners need to learn the real value and understand it. Many times, it’s not what they think. What a business takes from someone emotionally affects what they thing is the price, but the buyer doesn’t have that baggage and there is not a value for that. The bank or loan company for the transaction also must get behind it. That is a reality that impacts the price. If the seller understands the value, the buyer understands, and the bank can get behind it – and all parties are good with it, then things are good to proceed. The business must also have good strong 3M’s – Market, Message, and Management. Tell us more about the 3 M’s… They are the 3 areas that are most important to focus on in the business. Marketing, Messaging, Management Is marketing being maximized and done right for the business? Is the messaging for the business consistent and easy to understand? Does the business have good management - systems that work well without the owner? What is one thing that you think every entrepreneur should know? You must be truly aligned with what you want to do before you get started. There is a million ways to make a million dollars, but only a certain few are a fit for you. Your business must be aligned with your passion for it. Passion defeats education. Passion breeds desire….desire drives success. You have to have a healthy obsession.   Best Quote: Where there is no passion, there is no profit.   Chad's Misfit 3: If you are going to do something, go all the way. In order to go all the way, you need to be prepared to go further than what you think “all they way” is. Personal responsibility. If it’s meant to be, it’s up to me. Don’t let yourself have “rocking chair regret” or let the music die inside you. Accomplish your dreams and goals

When I think of the X Games and BMX legends, it doesn't take long to get to the name Chad Kagy. Chad was a force in BMX Park, Dirt, Vert, and Big Air and always a threat to win any contest he entered. He was also a rider you looked forward to watching because you never knew if he'd pull something out of his bag of tricks that nobody had ever seen before. Chad grew up in Northern California which had always been a hotbed for BMX talent. Seemingly every generation of Freestyle has seen a high level of riding come out of that part of the United States. From back in the early 80s with one of BMX freestyle's first crazy guys Hugo Gonzalez, to the Curb Dogs with Dave Vanderspek and Maurice Meyer, followed by Mike Kranaich, and flatland legend Pete Brandt. The 90s were no different... In addition to Kagy were Norcal shredders like Ryan Nyquist, Cameron Birdwell, and Joey Garcia who burst onto the scene pushing each other's skills while taking major contests by storm, at a time when the X Games and BMX on tv were exploding! As Chad got older his focus shifted predominately to BMX Vert and Big Air, pushing both events to new levels of craziness, while stocking up on even more X Games medals including a gold in BMX Vert, and 3 gold medals in BMX Big Air. Chad went on to become one of the biggest names in X Games history winning a total of 15 X Games medals. Eventually, a number of serious injuries would take their toll on Chad's body long term... with marriage and eventually having a kid, he decided it was time to call an end to his competition career. We hit up Chad via Skype and got the lowdown on how he started riding BMX, the NorCal scene and some of its history, winning the Bronze medal at X Games for BMX Park back in 99, how he made the decision to ride vert, moving to Woodward to train with the best riders in the world, blasting the 27 foot tall Big Air quarterpipe, his relationship with Kevin Robinson, being a part of Nitro Circus, doing the Bikes Over Baghdad Tour, and the injuries that brought an end to his X Games career. So get comfortable, crank up your speakers, and get to know a true X Games BMX legend... Chad Kagy.

“I think that done properly, collaboration will come to be understood not just as an application or an app that you boot up for those five minutes when you need to use it, but a fundamental property of computation itself.” — John Underkoffler John Underkoffler, CEO of Oblong Industries, has developed a new way to share ideas online with the Mezzanine platform, Oblong’s flagship product suite that is effectively the world’s first multi-user computer. Mezzanine allows for multi-content, multi-stream, and multi-user experiences, or as John likes to describe it, “getting visual ideas out of people’s individual devices and onto a screen where everyone can see them.” Currently, Mezzanine is built for enterprise-level companies, but Oblong is not stopping there. They’ve developed a virtual version of Mezzanine called Rumpus built specifically for remote teams all over the world to collaborate on work projects more effectively. Communication is no longer an issue with Mezzanine and Rumpus, where your ideas are easily shared visually and not limited to the written word. “Cognitive empathy is what Mezzanine and Rumpus is really trying to get at,” says John.   As Chad points out in the episode, “how many relationships have we lost because of flawed communication?” Language has its limitations. Mezzanine and Rumpus are making it easy to visually share ideas in real-time with multiple users. What could be possible for humanity if we all understood each other better? Many of John’s ideas were brought to life in the film, Minority Report, where he helped craft a vision for what technology would look like in 2054. The movie showed “how powerful UI itself can be,” says John. “UI as an extension of human cognition and human teamwork.” On this episode, Chad and John discuss his upbringing from learning to code to his experience in K-12 education, what cultural and economic factors are affecting innovation today, and John’s thoughts on how technology can propel humanity forward. — Mission Daily and all of our podcasts are created with love by our team at Mission.org. #150: Chad Carson's friends called him a "nerdjock." When former college football linebacker Chad Carson graduated from Clemson University, he decided to start a business. But he didn't have any money. He was a 235-pound athlete who attended college on a football scholarship. He graduated debt-free with $1,000 in savings from various odd jobs. He wanted to become an entrepreneur, and he knew he was starting from zero. As Chad viewed it, starting from zero meant he had nothing to lose. He started jogging around local neighborhoods near the university. Whenever he noticed a property in disrepair, he'd ask if it was for sale. If he noticed a 'For Sale by Owner' sign in the yard, for example, he'd dial the number. If he noticed a home with an overgrown lawn and no curtains in the windows, he'd leave a note on the door, or he'd knock on the neighbor's doors to get the owner's phone number. By doing this, Chad started a real estate wholesaling business. He'd find off-market properties, enter into a sales contract with the owner, and then 'flip' the contract to an investor. He earned around $5,000 for each deal. The benefit to a wholesaling business, Chad discovered, is that he could get a foothold inside the real estate industry without much access to capital. He was a recent college graduate without any official employment, so most banks weren't interested in offering him loans. Wholesaling gave him a start in the industry. But after awhile, he wanted to chase bigger deals. He and a business partner decided to start flipping houses themselves. They earned profits of around $20,000 to $30,000 for each deal. While this was great, Chad wanted to transition into something that would provide a steady, stable income stream. He was running an active business; he wasn't accumulating a portfolio of passive investments. He and his business partner stopped flipping homes and began accumulating buy-and-hold rental properties. Today they have 90 units between the two of them. A few years ago, Chad realized that the passive income from his investments made him financially independent. He and his wife decided to enjoy their newfound freedom by moving to Ecuador with their two children, ages 3 and 5. They spent 17 months living in Ecuador, learning Spanish and enjoying a slower pace of life. They recently returned to the U.S. and are considering moving to either Spain or Germany -- or maybe Colorado? -- for their next adventure. In today's episode, Chad and I discuss real estate, financial independence, and international travel with children. Enjoy!

"I'm thinking about building Lego right now Dad. Talk to me about compound interest later, ok?" - Chad Sichello Who will teach our kids about personal finance? In Canada, parents can open a bank account for their kids when they are really young. But at what point do you give them access to that money? At what point do they get a debit card? These are decisions every parent has to make eventually. But it's not enough to give them access to the $1,000 that's in their account one day and say: “Remember to spend responsibly.” Or “Did you know that if you save just $1 a day, you could have $100,000 by the time you are 65?” Do you know how far away 65 is for a 12 year old? The point is that you may not be the best person to teach your kids about money. With kids, it's not always about how much you know about money, it's about how you communicate with them. And it's about how they learn and how they engage. That's where Dojo comes in. Dojo is an interactive tool to teach your kids about money. It's a smartphone app and debit card that are connected to your kid's bank account. Parents get a version of the app that has all the spending controls and monitoring abilities. The kid gets the version that tracks their spending, and let's them work towards savings goals of their own. You can add money to the kid's account easily by using the app and even set up things like a scheduled allowance. As a parent you get to see where your kid spends their money and help them make better decisions, in real time. I originally met Chad Sichello, CEO & Co-Founder of Dojo, at the Payments Canada Summit in May of 2017. I really liked the idea and I started telling people about it, but I would say “It's credit cards for kids!” and everyone thought I was crazy. Well, of course, it's not credit cards, it's debit cards, which I suppose makes more sense since you can't get a credit card in Canada until you are 18. But no matter the product or the interface, what I liked the most was the idea of raising money-smart kids and that Chad and his team took the time to figure out how kids are learning today, and they created a product that met them, as Chad says in the interview, “where they are”. I was happy to see that Dojo had a booth at the SIBOS 2017 conference in Toronto and I really enjoyed chatting with Chad about how he's working to make sure the next generation is even better at managing money than we are. As Chad mentions in the interview, Dojo is currently only available through ATB Financial in Alberta, so if you're an ATB customer and have kids, please try it out and let me know what you think. Red Rocks Church Weekend Messages

This week, Chad continues the series talking about how the Lord's timing is rarely close to our own. In seasons of the Lord whispering 'let's go,' often the call comes with a deep and critical need for patience. As Chad pointed out, the Lord's thoughts are higher than our thoughts, his ways of thinking are not limited by our human capacity.

This is the very real story of Chad Stamps and his unromantic journey into farming. It's the reality of life that makes this story unromantic, versus the common romantic notions that you hear when someone speaks about going into farming. Long hours, driving, and hard work are par for the course. Entry into farming is often a grind. But it is that grind that has become some people's destiny. People like Chad. Chad has gone from no farming experience to now full time farmer. He looked for land for 6 years and started with just 4 feeder pigs and the rest is history. As Chad says in this episode, "The perfect time will never come. Start before you are ready. If you wait, you'll never get there." And, oh yeah... This episode was recorded 4 days after Chad quit his job to farm full time. This is as real as it gets. Show Notes: permaculturevoices.com/85
