What would it take for Oxford to truly unlock its potential as a global innovation hub and what keeps getting in the way?In this Oxford+ In Brief mini episode, host Susannah de Jager puts four quick-fire questions to Dr Holly Reeve, co-founder and CEO of HydRegen. Holly shares what success looks like if Hydregen reaches commercial scale manufacturing, why Oxford's chemistry department has become a breeding ground for spin-outs, and why she wishes the barriers between universities and startups were far lower than they are today. With a new super cluster board forming across the Oxford–Cambridge arc and initiatives like Equinox and OX Tech Week working to connect the ecosystem, Holly argues the direction of travel is encouraging. But she is clear that the real bottleneck is not facilities or funding structures: it is the failure to invest strategically in the people behind the science. Dr Holly Reeve: Holly Reeve is the co-founder and CEO of HydRegen, an Oxford University spin-out developing bio-based catalysts to replace precious metals in chemical manufacturing. She holds a MChem and DPhil in Inorganic Chemistry from the University of Oxford, where she worked on the HydRegen technologies from inception in Professor Kylie Vincent's research group. Holly has raised over £1.3 million in early-stage funding from Innovate UK and investors, secured a further £2.6 million led by Clean Growth Fund, and grown the company to 15 people. She is a Royal Society of Chemistry Emerging Technology prize winner and a member of the Royal Academy of Engineering Enterprise Hub's Shott Scale Up Accelerator. In June 2025, HydRegen announced a strategic collaboration with James Robinson Speciality Ingredients to implement its Bio2Amine™ biocatalyst technology in commercial manufacturing.Susannah de Jager: Susannah is a seasoned professional with over 15 years of experience in UK asset management. What does it really take to turn a breakthrough in a university lab into a company that could transform how the world makes chemicals? In this episode of Oxford+, host Susannah de Jager speaks with Dr Holly Reeve, co-founder and CEO of HydRegen, an Oxford spin-out replacing precious metals in chemical manufacturing with bio-based enzyme catalysts. Holly shares her journey from a farm in rural England to leading a 15-person deep tech company now preparing for manufacturing and raising a Series A.With the global biocatalysis market projected to more than double to USD 10.2 billion by 2033, Hydregen is positioned at the forefront of a sector gaining serious momentum. Holly discusses how she developed leadership skills during her PhD, why the shift from academic to commercial mindset is so difficult, and how she balances curiosity with execution. What would it take for Oxford to rival Silicon Valley or Boston as a global destination for deep tech?In this episode of Oxford Plus, host Susannah de Jager sits down with Dr Christiaan de Koning and Michael Collyer, co-founders of the Founders and Funders community, to explore how Oxford is organising itself for a new chapter in innovation. What started as a small gathering during COVID has grown into a 4,000-strong network and a registered foundation connecting researchers, founders, investors, and institutions across the city. Now, with UK startup funding reaching $7.8 billion in Q1 2026 alone – a 60% increase year on year, Oxford is well placed to capture a growing share of that momentum. Christiaan and Michael discuss why the city's problem is not a lack of capital or talent but a lack of connection, and how their upcoming OX Tech Week aims to change that by creating a visible, city-wide platform for the ecosystem. From the Oxford Innovation Map to the vision of making Oxford the global home of deep tech, this is a conversation about what happens when a city that has always excelled at discovery starts to organise itself around building, scaling, and global relevance.Founders and Funders – Oxford's community foundation for researchers, founders, and investorsOxford Tech Week – Oxford's inaugural city-wide tech festival, 26–29 May 2026Oxford Innovation Map (oxmap.tech) – Interactive map of Oxford-affiliated startups, investors, and innovation hubs(00:00) - Welcome to Oxford Plus (01:09) - Introducing Oxford Tech Week and Founders and Funders (02:17) - How Founders and Funders Began (04:40) - From Online Events to Packed Pubs (06:24) - Why 97% of STEM PhDs Leave Academia (08:09) - Oxford at an Inflection Point (10:08) - The Missing Front Door to Oxford (11:06) - Mapping Oxford's Innovation Ecosystem (13:14) - More than Just a University Town (15:53) - The Capital Is Already Here (19:57) - Inside the Inaugural Oxford Tech Week (25:14) - A North Star for Deep Tech Dr Christiaan de Koning: Christiaan de Koning is an Associate Fellow at Green Templeton College, University of Oxford, and Chair of the Founders and Funders Foundation. What would it take for Oxford to become the place where the companies that define global healthcare are actually built? In this Oxford+ in Brief, host Susannah de Jager puts four quick-fire questions to Benny Axt, Entrepreneur in Residence at Oxford Science Enterprises. Benny shares his vision of success for the ecosystem, his advice for newcomers, and a candid assessment of where Oxford excels and where it falls short. He argues that world-class science alone is not enough, speed of translation, commercial talent, growth capital and a cultural shift towards risk-taking are all essential if Oxford is to fulfil its potential. With Deloitte's 2026 Global Health Care Outlook reporting that over 70 per cent of non-US health system executives expect margins to improve this year, and IQVIA highlighting structural shifts across the NHS that are reshaping the landscape for health tech companies, Benny's call for Oxford to optimise for execution over perfection feels especially timely. From express licensing of bundled IP to unlocking pension fund capital, this is a concise and direct take on what needs to change, and why the UK's first trillion-dollar company could emerge from deep science in Oxford.Benny Axt: Benny Axt is Entrepreneur in Residence in the Health Tech team at Oxford Science Enterprises (OSE), the largest university-affiliated investment company in the world and OSE's first EIR to join from the US. A seasoned healthcare strategist, operator and corporate development leader, Benny has spent over 15 years building healthcare businesses across six continents. Previously Vice President of Strategy at Dialogue Health Technologies Inc., he supported the company's US market entrance and helped grow it from a venture-backed startup through to IPO and acquisition. Before that, Benny held leadership roles at DaVita, a Fortune 500 healthcare provider, where his work included leading the privatisation of healthcare services in Saudi Arabia and building cultural infrastructure across more than a dozen countries. How does world-class science fail to become a scalable business and what can founders do about it?In this episode of Oxford+, host Susannah de Jager speaks with Benny Axt, Entrepreneur in Residence at Oxford Science Enterprises, about the complex relationship between healthcare technology and the systems it must operate within. They explore why healthcare's apparent inefficiency is often intentional constraint, how reimbursement models and regulatory pathways can make or break a company, and what UK health tech founders consistently underestimate about the US market.Drawing on a recent BCG report highlighting a £20 billion annual opportunity if the UK strengthens its ability to translate research into real-world solutions, the conversation underscores why system fluency is not optional but essential. What would success for UK innovation actually look like in practice? In this short Oxford+ in Brief bonus episode, host Susannah de Jager asks Lord William Hague four fast questions that cut straight to the future of Oxford, the Oxford ecosystem, and Britain's ability to translate world-class ideas into lasting prosperity. Hague argues that the UK should aim to make the Oxford–Cambridge–London triangle the place in the world to build a career, invest, and create globally significant companies. The Oxford–Cambridge Growth Corridor has become a central plank of the UK's growth agenda, with the Chancellor previously pointing to an ambition to add £78bn to the economy by 2035, as reported by BBC News. Against that backdrop, Hague's answers highlight two recurring themes: Oxford's extraordinary breadth across disciplines, and the structural challenge of moving quickly inside a decentralised institution.Lord William Hague: Lord William Hague of Richmond is the Chancellor of the University of Oxford and a former Leader of the Conservative Party. He studied PPE at Magdalen College, Oxford, later completing an MBA at INSEAD, and served as MP for Richmond for 26 years, including as Leader of the Conservative Party (1997–2001) and as Foreign Secretary (2010–2014). As Minister for Disabled People, he was responsible for the Disability Discrimination Act 1995, and he co-founded the Campaign to Prevent Sexual Violence in Conflict. How does the UK turn world-class ideas into world-class companies, without selling the best outcomes abroad? In this episode of Oxford+, host Susannah de Jager speaks with Lord William Hague, Chancellor of the University of Oxford and former UK Foreign Secretary, about the UK's scale-up gap and what it will take to build an innovation economy that keeps more value at home. They discuss why universities sit at the centre of growth, how pension capital and other long-term investors can help close the funding gap, and why procurement and slow decision-making can quietly kill promising companies before they reach commercial scale. The conversation lands in the reality of the Oxford-Cambridge Growth Corridor, which government has positioned as a long-term national growth project. Recent reporting on the corridor highlights the scale of the ambition and the industries driving it, alongside the claim it could add £78bn to the economy by 2035. Welcome to the first episode of the Special Edition: Law Firms podcast, where we speak with CMOs and senior marketers at leading law firms about how brand actually drives growth in legal services. Law firm marketers speak about differentiation, but most still communicate trust, expertise and experience in near identical ways. The underlying buying behaviour has not dramatically changed. Legal services remain a repertoire market – clients default to firms they already know, then ask for recommendations. That reality makes memory, awareness and perception commercially decisive. Yet many firms still behave as if reputation alone will do the work.In this conversation, Benedict speaks with Lee Grunnell, CMO at Womble Bond Dickinson, about what actually moves the dial. Drawing on brand tracking data and two decades inside professional services, Lee explains why homogeneity persists, why culture is both the truth and the trap, and why research – not internal consensus – is the only credible route to a defensible position. They also explore why law may have more permission to be bold than it assumes, and how firms such as Hill Dickinson and Mishcon de Reya are resetting expectations for the category. This is a conversation about brand as commercial infrastructure in a high trust, low frequency market where standing still is not neutral. The inherited risk aversion of legal marketingHow legal buying actually works in practiceWhy awareness matters in a repertoire marketTrust is table stakes – what sits on top?The culture paradox – true but impossible to defineUsing research to force clarityWomble Bond Dickinson's “point of view”Are law firms finally prepared to be braver?B2B Marketing: The Provocative Truth is a podcast by alan. agency. What would success look like if Oxfordshire got climate innovation truly right, not just in ideas, but in deployment at scale? In this Oxford+ bonus episode, Susannah de Jager speaks with Hannah Scott, CEO of Oxfordshire Greentech, about the practical barriers that stop climate tech startups moving from promise to global impact.Hannah unpacks why scaling hardware and deep tech takes longer, costs more, and often hits the Valley of Death between Series A and Series B, where funding needs can jump dramatically. She argues the UK needs more patient capital, including family offices, and reflects on whether pension reform will genuinely shift investment towards British IP and industrial capability. That question has new urgency, with the government saying the Mansion House Accord could unlock up to £50bn for UK businesses and major infrastructure. The conversation also looks forward: what Oxford might become by 2050, and how to weigh heritage, housing, equity, and innovation. Finally, Hannah frames AI as both opportunity and risk for net zero, and asks what it means to move forward more sensibly.Hannah Scott: Hannah Scott is the CEO of Oxfordshire Greentech, a not-for-profit business network building a world-leading climate tech innovation ecosystem in Oxfordshire with impact beyond. She leads the organisation in managing and engaging members, connecting them with funding, customers, and business expertise whilst facilitating scale-up innovation through events, programmes and projects. Hannah is also Co-Founder of the Climate Tech SuperCluster, which showcases, develops and scales climate-critical technologies across the UK and Europe. What would defence reform look like if we stopped overcomplicating it? In this Oxford+ in brief episode, host Susannah de Jager asks Alison Hawks questions that reveal how leaders think under pressure, what shapes their decisions, and what they are curious about right now. Alison argues that defence needs to get out of its own way: procurement should be a clearer transaction where the military owns the problem, industry owns the solution, and requirements reflect that division of expertise. She shares practical advice for anyone entering the sector tomorrow, using the simple test of desirability, feasibility, and viability to avoid building solutions nobody will fund or use. Looking ahead to 2050, Alison predicts a different defence marketplace where today's primes may not dominate in the same way, even as scale still depends on major supply chains.Dr Alison Hawks: Dr Alison Hawks is co-founder and CEO of BMNT Ltd, the UK arm of BMNT, where she advises governments and technology companies on accelerating adoption of commercial innovation in defence and national security. I've seen some of Reya Lovenlight's content on Twitter/X and I liked what I saw. After a few interactions, I thought that we needed to have her on our 2/22/2026 show! We talked about how she got her start, future plans and even "The elephant in the room" as well. Tune in to find out what that is! One word that came up many times, mostly by me, was "Refreshing." Her attitude her style and her personality is "Refreshing!" We hope to see her at one of the Exxxotica events this year and I think she knows that breakfast is at 7:45am! Along with Reya, Lorenzo was a part of our show as well and it's always great to have him as a panelist.
How do you sell to a customer where the decision-maker is actually five different people, and half of them might move roles before the contract lands? In this episode of Oxford+, host Susannah de Jager speaks with Dr Alison Hawks, co-founder and CEO of BMNT Ltd, about why defence innovation is becoming a structural opportunity, and why procurement literacy is often more important than the technology itself. They unpack the realities of B2G: long buying cycles, complex stakeholder incentives, and the traps that stall companies after a promising pilot. The conversation lands at a timely moment. The UK's Strategic Defence Review commits to an ‘always on' munitions pipeline, including building at least six new energetics and munitions factories, signalling how seriously government is now treating sovereign capability and industrial resilience. How does one of the most significant private investments in UK science and technology history take shape on the ground in Oxford? In this episode of Oxford+, host Susannah de Jager speaks with Lisa Flashner, Chief Operating Officer of the Ellison Institute of Technology, about Larry Ellison's ambitious vision to establish a transformative research campus in Oxford. They explore why Ellison chose Oxford as the home for EIT's first major European campus, the Institute's four main pillars of work: medical sciences, clean energy, sustainable agriculture, and AI and robotics, and the physical plans for a campus that will eventually house up to 7,000 people.Lisa brings a unique perspective, having spent 15 years as COO of the Ellison Medical Institute in Los Angeles before relocating to Oxford. She discusses the cultural differences between US and UK innovation ecosystems, the Institute's "all boats rise" philosophy of collaboration with the University of Oxford and the broader ecosystem, and addresses early suspicions about whether EIT would drain talent from the university. Announced in October 2025, the Ellison Institute confirmed plans to spend more than £10 billion on talent and science programmes over the next decade. A major vote of confidence as the UK seeks to strengthen its position in global science and technology. Manila is usually a symphony of noise—firecrackers, karaoke, and celebration. But inside the Public General Hospital, the air is sterile and silent. Reya, a nurse on the night shift, watches over 'Lolo Ben,' a coma patient with no family to claim him. It is Noche Buena, the midnight feast, and Reya refuses to let him spend it in the dark. She hangs a small paper lantern on his IV pole and begins to read. But the hospital doors are about to open, bringing a reminder that even in the quietest rooms, we are never truly alone. If these moments of quiet connection and hope resonated with you, we're thrilled to tell you that the full collection, When the Bells Don't Ring by Danny Ballan, is now available on Amazon and everywhere books are sold. In episode two of Ropes & Gray's Non-Financial Misconduct Miniseries, Amanda Raad, co-leader of the firm's crisis management and global risk practices, and litigation & enforcement senior attorney Sarah Lambert-Porter are joined by Sharon Tan, partner at Mishcon de Reya, to examine the intersection of the FCA's new non-financial misconduct (NFM) rules and employment law. During this second episode, they also discuss the evolving definition of non-financial misconduct, the draft guidance and factors relevant to NFM's seriousness, and the implications for conduct in the workplace as well as in private life. The hosts offer practical guidance for asset managers, private equity sponsors, and other regulated firms on implementing multidisciplinary approaches, educating stakeholders, ensuring consistency in disciplinary processes, and preparing for the upcoming regulatory changes.
Elliot Moss didn't join a law firm to keep things the same. As Partner and Chief Brand Officer at Mishcon de Reya LLP, he brought a deep understanding of branding into a profession that often dismisses it, and changed how one of the UK's top firms thinks about growth and perception. He shares how clarity, consistency, and emotional intelligence turned Mishcon from a £45 million practice into a £380 million brand defined by truth and differentiation, not slogans. Clients, he says, may buy expertise, but they stay because of trust and how a firm makes them feel. He talks candidly about leading change in a culture that prizes logic over emotion, showing how small wins and patience can reshape perception from within. The conversation moves beyond marketing into the psychology of leadership, exploring why authentic differentiation matters more than polish and how strong branding can become a firm's greatest competitive advantage. For Elliot, the future of law will belong to those who understand that perception drives performance—and that real brand power is earned, not advertised. Colonel Mitchell becomes Collateral Damage when he's arrested for murder! And he's confessed! This episode sparks some thought-provoking conversations about memory and whether this process is something you would want to undergo. Rachael makes a really interesting point that a person knowing the memories are implanted but still believing they are their own knowledge is a weird disconnect. There's also the point of having the knowledge of how to do something versus actually doing it can be very different things. It is a little odd that an archaeologist and an alien Jaffa are the ones put in charge of looking over legal files. Even if they are alien documents, where's the lawyer? Major Davis? Someone? Also, how exactly does the memory device work? They seem to contradict themselves as they explain it when first analyzing Mitchell's memories to figure out if his memory of Reya's murder is false or not. As much as we really like this episode, at the end of it we're still left asking ourselves, "But how??" What if your voice was a living prayer, and the Earth herself was listening?Holy, holy. This conversation is one of my all-time favorites. I'm joined by my dear sister Reya Manna, an Earth Song Guide, healer, and founder of the SongKeeper School, whose life is devoted to restoring our sacred relationship with the land and the Divine. From our very first meeting, it felt like an ancient remembering: two women who had walked the same Topanga trails, shared the same love for Jesus beyond dogma, and answered the same call to leave Los Angeles when spirit whispered, it's time.Together, we explore what it really means to wake down into the body, commune with nature as a living teacher, and live as instruments of the holy. Reya shares how listening to the Earth led her to create the SongKeeper School, how this summer's eclipse portal became a profound feminine initiation, and why devotion, song, and ceremony are medicine for these times. You'll hear about:Following the soul's call even when it makes no senseLearning to wake down: embodying divinity through the human formThe voice as sacred medicine and prayerHealing through song, Earth-honoring, and feminine initiationLiving devotion in everyday lifeWe also talk about her brand-new seven-week offering, The Journey of the Song Keeper, now open for enrollment: a live, experiential program through The Shift Network that helps you reconnect with your voice as a sacred conduit of the Divine and sing Heaven onto Earth. In this episode of the Crazy Wisdom Podcast, host Stewart Alsop is joined by Reya Manna, founder of the Song Keepers School, for an inspiring conversation that traverses spirituality, the power of the human voice, psychedelics, ancient creation myths, and the cultural significance of storytelling and singing. Reya shares her journey from being discouraged from pursuing a life centered around singing to discovering its deeper healing potential during South American plant medicine ceremonies. The discussion touches on the sacred role of sound in protection and healing, the pitfalls of artificial intelligence's detachment from soul and embodiment, and the importance of nurturing authentic self-expression amidst modern distractions like social media. This rich dialogue emphasizes the profound wisdom carried through connection to nature, the divine feminine, and practices of deep listening, which Reya also integrates into her Song Keepers School. If you're seeking to reconnect with your voice and align with ancient healing traditions, you can learn more about Reya's work and upcoming programs at www.reyamanna.com. The vibration of our own voice can ground us, heal emotional wounds, and serve as a tool for blessing and transformation when used with intentionality and love. This deeper understanding of the voice's role in healing can reframe how we view self-expression and creativity.Rediscovering Ancestral Wisdom and Connection to Nature: The conversation highlights how many of us have become disconnected from ancestral practices and the natural world. Reya explains how nature holds wisdom in its patterns and sounds, serving as a "library" of memory and guidance. Through offerings, prayers, and song, individuals can rekindle a relationship with the earth that restores a sense of belonging and purpose.Singing as a Transmission of Love and Sacred Intentions: In contrast to the commodification of music in modern society, Reya describes how the act of singing has traditionally been used by shamans and healers to convey love, protection, and blessings. By building a practice of singing from the heart, individuals can access their authentic voice and align with their higher purpose, amplifying their energy field and positively impacting others.Navigating the Modern Landscape of Technology and AI with Discernment: Stewart and Reya discuss the rise of artificial intelligence and its impact on creativity and self-awareness. They reflect on how AI can replicate but cannot embody the soulful essence of human expression. This prompts a reminder to foster resilience against digital distractions by grounding ourselves in embodied experiences and genuine human connection. The Interplay Between Spirituality, Desire, and Social Conditioning: The discussion delves into the Gnostic myths and the idea that true desires originate from the "high heart" and guide us toward our soul's blueprint. However, lower desires—amplified by social media and consumerism—can entrap us in illusions. Recognizing this distinction can help individuals reclaim their agency and align with their authentic spiritual path. The Divine Feminine and Sacred Balance in Creation: Reya brings attention to the erasure of the divine feminine in many spiritual narratives and emphasizes the importance of restoring balance by honoring both masculine and feminine energies. She shares stories of ancient priestesses and the sacred role of women as conduits of creation and wisdom, suggesting that reclaiming this knowledge is essential for collective healing and spiritual evolution.A Call to Collective Kindness and Creative Agency: The conversation ends with a reflection on the power of individual actions in creating ripples of collective change. Whether through a simple song, a kind gesture, or a moment of deep listening, every act of love and care contributes to a more harmonious world. Reya underscores the importance of remembering that we are creators of our reality, capable of shaping a future imbued with compassion, connection, and truth.
“It is still quite challenging to convince partners of the need for change when the traditional model is still serving them incredibly well,” says Neville Eisenberg, Senior Strategy Executive, Mishcon de Reya, who joins The Future is Bright to talk about innovation taking place within UK law firms, innovation he helped contribute to with the contract attorney company, Lawyers on Demand, and now with Flex Legal, an alternative legal services provider now owned by Mishcon de Reya. Neville will discuss with hosts Chris Batz and Howard Rosenberg the growing number of opportunities in the alternative legal services provider market and what it means for private equity. He'll discuss the changes which have taken place in the UK legal landscape as a result of deregulation and a number of legal processes now available in a self-service capacity, and what this means in terms of social justice. He will discuss the widely differing implications of AI on Top 10 law firms and on everyone below them, and the disconnect between supply and demand that he finds most concerning. Learn Neville's thoughts on the crop of small high-performing law boutiques burgeoning in the UK and the importance of U.S. competition to the UK market. Quotes “It is still quite challenging to convince partners of the need for change, or indeed the value of spending money on doing things differently when the traditional model is still serving them incredibly well.” (11:40 | Neville Eisenberg) “The Top Ten law firms in the UK generally regard Gen AI as likely to have a positive impact on their firms, in particular, because they see opportunity for productivity gains. But the rest of the Top 100, so the 90 firms below the top ten, have exactly the opposite, almost exactly, the opposite view of the impact of Gen AI in that they have significant concerns about the pressure that it might produce from clients to reduce cost of legal services and also that there may be a reduction in some of the work that's outsourced to their firms.” (12:27 | Neville Eisenberg) “Notwithstanding the deregulation, there is still—it appears to me from my conversation with clients—there is still a disconnect between the demand side and the supply side in the market.” (20:15 | Neville Eisenberg) “One doesn't have to be in a huge law firm to be successful. There is another model that can work.” (30:20 | Neville Eisenberg) “It just seems to me that there is a very strong business case for many of these firms creating shared business services platforms that can benefit from scale economies, and all the other benefits of scale, and running those business services functions in a more effective way.” (32:51 | Neville Eisenberg) Links Connect with Neville Eisenberg: LinkedIn Profile: https://www.linkedin.com/in/neville-eisenberg-47b2586/ Connect with Howard Rosenberg: LinkedIn profile: https://www.linkedin.com/in/hrosenberg/ Company web profile: https://www.baretzbrunelle.com/howard-rosenberg Connect with Chris Batz: LinkedIn Profile: https://www.linkedin.com/in/chrisbatz/ LinkedIn Company page: https://www.linkedin.com/company/columbus-street/ Columbus Street website: https://www.columbus-street.com/ Podcast production and show notes provided by HiveCast.fm
When I first met Ahilya Bamroo in the sets of the movie, I was trying to find my daughter in her. Very soon I realized why Shoojit Sircar chose her to play the role of Reya in the movie I Want to Talk. It was fascinating to see how she processed the evolving relationship with her on-screen dad, who was going through every possible life challenge, while holding on to her unique personality. When I sat down with her for this conversation, I really wished my daughter Raka was there in the conversation too. It would have been fascinating to see Raka and Reya talk. Here is my conversation with my movie daughter Ahilya. I am excited to see her career evolve and blossom in her journey ahead.
