One of the things that really attracts me to the outdoors is the quiet. On this episode I'm going to be talking about a quieter approach to spending time in the outdoors. Silent sports are a great way to truly connect to the outdoors. It gets you away from the every day noise of life. It immerses you fully into your environment allowing you to see, hear and enjoy everything around you. Got a question or comment? wisconsinsoutdoorexplorer@gmail.com Wisconsin has one of the best park systems in the state. When most people talk about Wisconsin parks, they usually mean one of our state parks. And why wouldn’t they? Wisconsin state parks offer so much to each visitor. And each park offers something different. You really get a taste of the different areas and regions of the state with the different terrains and trials at each park. And with over 40 state parks spread throughout Wisconsin, you definitely get a chance to feel what it’s like to experience Wisconsin. But did you know that Wisconsin’s county park system offers a great alternative to the larger state parks. There are a lot of advantages to these smaller parks and on this week's podcast I go through some of the things that I enjoy about our county parks. As most of us living in Wisconsin know, the spring season can be finicky. One day it’s 50 degrees and you’re ready to break out the shorts for the year and then the next day it’s back down to 20 degrees and you’re shoveling 6 inches of snow. These swings in the weather are pretty much normal for Wisconsin and we learn to live with them. However, they can make getting out for a nice hike a bit tricky. Got a question or comment? wisconsinsoutdoorexplorer@gmail.com If you’ve ever driven on highway 29 between Wausau and Green Bay, you’ve driven through Shawano County. You’ve probably notice numerous barn quilts as you pass through the county. Did you know that Shawano County is considered the Wisconsin’s Barn Quilt Capital? I recently talk with the man who started it all, Jim Leuenberger. Jim brought his idea of barn quilts to Shawano county in June of 2010, after seeing barn quilts throughout Iowa, Kentucky and southern Wisconsin. He first presented his idea to local 4H clubs as a way for them to do something for the community. But little did he know that his idea would grow to over 350 barn quilts in less than 10 years. It’s truly a labor of love and Jim shares his story with me on this week’s podcast. Got a question or comment? wisconsinsoutdoorexplorer@gmail.com I think I can safely say that Devil’s lake is one of Wisconsin’s most popular State Parks. It’s so popular that I wasn’t sure it really even needed a review. But after thinking about our recent family out there, I thought I could bring a unique perspective to Wisconsin’s most popular State Park. Got a question or comment? wisconsinsoutdoorexplorer@gmail.com I think most of us can agree that taking care of Wisconsin is important. Being able to enjoy our parks, beaches, rivers and lakes is something that we want to pass down to the next generation. However, there are some things in our state that are creating unfair competition and even dominating our natural resources and habitat. And that is Invasive Species. But how do we even identify what is natural and what is invasive and what can we do to help the situation? I recently talked with Natalie Dutack, the Aquatic Invasive Species & Watershed Groups Manager with the River Alliance of Wisconsin. She talked to me about some of the things the River Alliance is doing to monitor invasive Species as well as how to prevent the spread of invasive species in our waterways. Natalie also talked with me about an upcoming event called Snapshot Day, where you and I can get out and help identify invasive species throughout the state. Snapshot Day will be held on August 17,2019, and is a great way for you to get involved in helping protect Wisconsin from invasive species all while spending a day on one of Wisconsin’s beautiful waterways. With almost 30 different sites throughout the state, there are plenty of opportunities for you to get out and help keep track of invasive species in our State. If you’d like more information about Snapshot day and how you can help, follow the links below. Let’s do something great for our state as we head out to be one of Wisconsin’s Outdoor Explorers. Got a question or comment? wisconsinsoutdoorexplorer@gmail.com I’ve been fortunate enough to capture some pretty amazing shots of lightning.
