Send us a textWhat happens when winter threatens to derail your running routine? For Angela Ryan, the answer isn't retreating to a treadmill—it's strapping on skis and embracing the season head-on.In this captivating conversation, Angela shares her journey from casual childhood runner to adventure-seeking athlete who finds joy in movement across all seasons and terrains. Currently training for an 18-mile ski race called the Cortolope at the Birkebeiner, Angela explains how she's adapted her fitness routine to Wisconsin winters by learning skate skiing—a diagonal, skating-like motion that provides excellent cross-training for running by strengthening glutes, hips, and hamstrings. The discussion ventures into creative winter activities that combine fitness with wonder, like Book Across the Bay—a 10K nighttime event where participants run, ski, or skate across frozen Lake Superior guided by ice luminaria, warming at bonfires along the route, and even passing a fire-breathing snow dragon at the 8K mark. For those determined to maintain winter running, Angela reveals her solution for icy conditions: specially designed screws from snow tires that provide traction without damaging shoes.Angela's adventures extend far beyond Wisconsin, from running tours of Florence to exploring Dublin's coastal paths and Yosemite's panoramic trails. She's planning an upcoming running trip along Ireland's Wicklow Way, demonstrating how running becomes not just exercise but a lens through which to experience the world. Most poignantly, she shares a life-threatening experience with pulmonary emboli that went undiagnosed because her fitness masked the symptoms—a powerful reminder for athletes to trust when something feels wrong.Whether you're a seasoned runner or just starting out, Angela's philosophy resonates: "There are no rules—just get out there." Her story reminds us that movement should bring joy, connection, and exploration, regardless of pace or distance. Ready to find your own path? Ever wondered why certain pastimes become so ingrained in a culture that they shape a nation's identity? Imagine a childhood where the heroes weren't caped crusaders, but cross-country skiers gliding across snowy landscapes, and where chocolate bars are not just treats, but an integral part of hiking traditions. This week, I'm peeling back the layers of what it means to be Norwegian, inspired by the side-splitting reflections of Zahid Ali, a stand-up comedian with a talent for pinpointing the quirks of our cultural identity. His observations on the peculiar reasons Norwegians choose where to live have me questioning – and laughing at – the stereotypes we so often take for granted. As we swap tales and chuckle over our collective obsession with skiing, I confess my own disconnect with this cherished national pastime. Yet, through the epic story of 'The Last King' and the legendary Birkebeiners, I find a thread of connection to this legacy that surprises me. Join me for a candid exploration of heritage, humor, and self-perception, where we'll explore why, despite my aversion to skiing, I can't help but feel a part of the ski-centric conversations that define so much of our social fabric. Who knows, by the end of our chat, you might just discover if there's a Birkebanner lurking in your heart too.A link to The Last King Support the showFollow my PatreonSupport my content at Buy me a Coffee:

The Norwegian civil war eventually produced two rival parties. Traditionally, the Birkebeiner have been seen as the party of the poor and the downtrodden and the Bagler as the party of the nobility and the Church. But they were just as much—if not more—regional elite groupings fighting for the supremacy of their own region within the kingdom.

Liv Arnesen and American polar explorer Ann Bancroft become the first women in history to sail and ski across Antarctica's landmass — completing a 94-day, 1,717-mile (2,747 km) trek. Liv have had to endure male screaming out “damn woman” as she overtakes them in the classic Birkebeiner cross-country ski race in Norway and when Liv and Ann pitched their 2001 Antarctic crossing expedition CEO's have reproached them for not looking strong enough. The arguments against women presence in Antarctica leads back to 1900s with inability of the weaker sex to surviving the hostile conditions. Modern doubts circle around women threatening the male culture with cat-fighting and sexual promiscuity. It's been a long struggle to prove that women can hold their own in polar regions why Liv and Ann's traverse over the Antarctica continent in 2000/2001 was so important. www.meetingexplorers.com
