Trust. It's yet another essential ingredient in building and sustaining elite teams. This week on The Mark Divine Show, Mark does a deep dive into the art and science of trust, drawing from his rich experience with the Navy SEALs, and his book “Staring Down The Wolf”.    Mark shares tales that unveil the true nature of leadership when things go sideways, and unpacks the three foundational pillars of trust—transparency, humility, and relentless follow-through. He discusses how authentic leadership is forged by facing down fears—-particularly the fear of failure.    Using insights from the military and his own personal growth journey, Mark issues a call to action for leaders everywhere to look inward, trust themselves first, and lead with character and courage.   Key Takeaways:  Relentless Follow-Through: Understand that trust is cemented when leaders do what they say, support their teams, and make sure crucial lessons lead to real action and positive change.   Facing The Fear of Failure: Realize that  leaders who are afraid of failure tend to become perfectionists, procrastinators, or careerists, which ultimately weakens teams and limits growth. Authenticity Matters: Recognize that staying authentic, consistent, and operating from humility will spread trust throughout your team.   Trust is Critical in Team Performance: Discover how trust acts as the “glue” for elite teams, and the consequences of lacking it can be mediocrity and underperformance.   Mark Divine is a former Navy SEAL Commander, entrepreneur, and NYT Bestselling author with PhD in Global Leadership and Change who has dedicated his life to unlocking human potential through integrated training in mental toughness, leadership, and physical readiness. Mark's journey began in New York City, where his fascination with eastern philosophy and martial arts set the stage for a transformative path. After a successful stint as a consultant at PriceWaterhouse Coopers, he made the pivotal decision to join the Navy SEALs at 25. Over two decades of service, Mark commanded critical missions globally, retiring as a Commander in 2011. Mark has trained elite organizations including Google, Nike, SpaceX, Boeing, Harvard University, The Olympics, YPO, and many others.Co-founding ventures such as SEALFIT, Unbeatable Mind, LLC, and Coronado Brewing Company have allowed Mark to blend his military expertise with entrepreneurial spirit. SEALFIT, born from his SEAL training insights, revolutionized physical and mental conditioning, impacting diverse groups from executives to athletes.Inspired by his military service, Mark founded the Courage Foundation to support veterans in holistic healing and restoration of purpose. If you're the woman everyone sees as "having it all together" but you secretly battle food thoughts every day, this episode is for you. Today we're exposing the lies high-achieving women tell themselves about carbs and revealing why your fear of bread, pasta, and fruit has nothing to do with discipline and everything to do with identity. You'll discover the science behind why your brain needs carbohydrates to function, hear a powerful client transformation story, and walk away with 3 tangible strategies you can implement this week to start eating freely this summer. What You'll Learn ✨ Why your identity as "the disciplined one" might actually be keeping you trapped ✨ The scientific truth about carbs and brain function that diet culture doesn't want you to know ✨ How restriction is literally impacting your cognitive performance and mood ✨ Why the most successful women struggle most with food freedom ✨ 3 immediate action steps to break free from carb fear this summer Key Takeaways The Identity Trap Your fear of carbs isn't really about carbs—it's about who you think you'll become if you eat them Being "the woman who doesn't need carbs" has become a prison disguised as discipline True discipline looks like nourishing your body, not restricting it The Science You Need to Know Your brain uses 120 grams of glucose daily (480 calories worth of carbohydrates) Glucose is the primary fuel source for your prefrontal cortex (decision-making center) Low-carb diets can impair cognitive performance and mood regulation Carbs are essential for serotonin production (your happiness neurotransmitter) The Summer Shift This summer can be different, but it requires challenging the identity you've built around restriction and embracing a new definition of what it means to be disciplined and successful. 3 Strategies to Break Free From Fear Foods This Summer Strategy 1: The Summer Food Dare Choose one carb you've been avoiding and eat it mindfully this week. Notice how your body feels and remind yourself: "I am safe. I am nourished. I am worthy of enjoyment." Strategy 2: The Identity Reframe Journal Practice Every morning write: "I am a woman who nourishes herself well." List what you WILL eat to fuel your life instead of what you WON'T eat. Strategy 3: The Carb Curiosity Experiment For one week, approach carbs with curiosity instead of fear. When the voice says "you don't need that," respond with "I'm curious how this will make me feel." Featured Client Story Hear how Lindsey's client, a doctor by trade and marathon runner, went from being unable to eat a bagel without spiraling to enjoying pizza with her kids and pasta on date nights—while actually improving her energy and work performance. Research Mentioned American Journal of Clinical Nutrition: Brain glucose requirements Journal of Nutrition: Cognitive performance and carb intake MIT Research: Carbohydrates and serotonin synthesis International Journal of Eating Disorders: Flexible vs. rigid eating patterns Quotes to Remember "Your fear of carbs isn't about the carbs—it's about losing control of an identity built on restriction." "The only bad thing about carbs is the people who tell you not to eat them." "Your brain runs on glucose, not willpower." "You don't earn carbs. You deserve them because you're alive." Ready to Go Deeper? If this episode hit you right in the chest and you're ready to break free from food fear this summer, you don't have to do this alone. Take the Next Step: Fill out a client application at www.herbestself.co to learn about partnering with Lindsey through her Breakthrough Experience or Freedom Formula programs. Pete, whose relationship with task management involves quad-wielding to-do apps like a productivity warlock, faces off with Tommy, who uses his iPhone calendar like a grocery list taped to a parking meter.Together, they dismantle performative productivity (spoiler: it's emotional self-gaslighting with better fonts), unpack procrastination as an anxiety-fueled death spiral in a trench coat, and lovingly roast each other's ritualistic self-sabotage. There's a chilling tale of Franz Ferdinand, a beeper, and the exact moment the world spiraled into World War I. Send me a text! I'd love to know what you're thinking!Work hurt is real, and ministry leaders aren't exempt. Whether it's being let go, navigating toxic work environments, or simply enduring deep disappointments, our vocational pain can shape us in ways we never expected—and often never wanted. In this episode, author of When Work Hurts, shares her own journey through work hurt, explores the different ways leaders experience vocational pain, and offers practical and spiritual resources for healing and resilience. THIS EPISODE'S HIGHLIGHTS INCLUDE:Meryl Herr shares her personal story of “work hurt” and how it led her to address the topic in her work and writing. Meryl Herr describes feeling disillusioned early in her career when her expectations for work did not align with reality, leading to discouragement and even unexpected job loss. Work hurt occurs when people sustain physical or psychological injuries in their workplace. Meryl Herr categorizes work hurt as stemming from toxic systems, unhealthy cultures, issues of job fit, and personal mistakes. Work hurt can be experienced as disappointment, disillusionment, or devastation, each having different causes and emotional impacts. Meryl Herr notes that people's tolerance for disappointment, disillusionment, and devastation is highly individual. Significant numbers of workers experience work hurt, including burnout, discrimination, and disengagement, as reflected in recent research and statistics. Discrimination and harassment at work affect certain demographic groups more acutely, highlighting systemic injustice and inequity. Meryl Herr stresses the need for individuals to acknowledge and process their work-related pain, rather than internalizing it or transmitting it to others. If people do not transform their work pain, they risk transmitting it as cynicism, projection, or stress in personal and family relationships. Community support, honest conversation, prayer—especially lament—and listening to God are central strategies for healing from work hurt. Meryl Herr encourages practices of discerning God's presence and call, likening vocational discernment to “wayfinding” that requires attention to context, one's gifts, and God's invitation. Being called to a vocation or job does not mean one is exempt from pain or suffering; Meryl Herr and Markus Watson both connect this to biblical examples of hardship in the midst of calling. Pastors play an important role by understanding and addressing the work hurt in their congregations and by providing practical, emotional, and spiritual support. Meryl Herr recommends cultivating “everyday faithfulness,” showing up and doing the daily work set before us as a foundational way to keep moving forward through disruption, loss, and fear.RELEVANT RESOURCES AND LINKS:Meryl Herr:Website – www.merylherr.comDePree Center for LeadershipBooks mentioned:When Work Hurts, by Meryl HerrFalling Upward, by Ruchard RohrRelated episodes:114. So, today I'm diving into the mess that can be podcast burnout. You know, that moment when your favorite hobby morphs into a job you dread? Yeah, we've all been there. We're chatting about big names like Marc Maron and others who decided to call it quits and how that's not just okay, but totally legit. Spoiler alert: sometimes stepping back is the best move you can make. I'll sprinkle in some sarcasm and laughs as we explore the absurdity of it all—because let's face it, if we can't laugh at our struggles, what's the point, right? If you've been thinking about starting a podcast but feel it's too crowded, realize all those podcasters who started back in 2005 might be being pulled in new directions that have them thinking about podcast retirement.Takeaways: Creative projects can sometimes feel like an endless cycle of stress and burnout. It's totally okay to step back from podcasting if it stops being fun for you. Many successful podcasters have experienced burnout, and it's a common issue in the industry. Managing expectations is crucial; don't expect overnight success when building an audience. Life changes, like welcoming a new baby, can drastically affect your podcasting ability and energy. Always remember: adding responsibilities means subtracting your fun, so be careful what you take on. How can we grow into our full potential?—living up to what we know is the best version of ourselves, actualizing our goals, and expressing our deepest purpose in a life of impact and love?Grounded in cognitive science and psychology, best-selling author, podcaster, educator and researcher Scott Barry Kaufman believes that we need to redefine our understanding of greatness and excellence to include our whole selves—our emotions, dreams, failures, and gifts—all to live a life that is fully human, fully yourself. In this conversation with Scott Barry Kaufman, we discuss:Education and formation for the whole person, not just our intellect but our bodies, emotions, and spiritualityMaslow's hierarchy of needs and the journey that leads to self-actualizationThe difference it makes to see the world through growth rather than our deficienciesWhat it means to thrive even in the midst of mental illnessThe horizontal dimensions of transcendenceAnd how to connect and align with your deepest valuesEpisode Highlights“You can be mentally ill and thriving.”“Self-actualization is bringing your whole self to the table—not just one part of you.”“Real transcendence is about becoming one with the world—not being more enlightened than others.”“People are far more likely to demand respect than to give it.”“Only you can walk the path.”Helpful Links and ResourcesVisit scottbarrykaufman.comThe Psychology Podcast with Scott Barry KaufmanChoose Growth Workbook by Kaufman & Feingold*Transcend: The New Science of Self-Actualization,* by Scott Barry KaufmanScientific American: Spiritual NarcissismThe Lights Triad Personality TestSensitive Men Rising DocumentaryMaslow's Hierarchy of Needs Reimagined – Big ThinkCorey Mascara Podcast on ValuesShow NotesOrigin Story and Human ComplexityScott shares his journey from being labeled “ungifted” with an auditory disability to becoming a cognitive scientist.A pivotal teacher asked, “What are you still doing here?”—sparking self-belief and ambition.“I was a champion for the quirky kids from the start.”His work has shifted from an early obsession with greatness to a lifelong pursuit of self-actualization.“Greatness is tied up in power and status. Self-actualization is about bringing your whole self.”Reimagining Maslow & The Sailboat MetaphorKaufman replaces the hierarchy of needs with a dynamic sailboat metaphor. The boat represents safety (security, connection, self-esteem); the sail represents growth and transcendence.“Unless we open our sail and become vulnerable to the wind, we can't move toward what matters.”Adds collective dimension: “There are other boats in the sea. Some people forget that.”Contrasts “horizontal transcendence” (connection) with “spiritual narcissism” (superiority).Mental Illness, Creativity, and ThrivingChallenges the binary between wellness and illness: “You can be mentally ill and thriving.”Cites research showing creative strengths in children of those with mental illness.“They get the goodies without the baddies—the imagination without the psychosis.”Dismantles false dichotomies in psychiatry: labels vs. lived experience.Encourages integration rather than repression of neurodivergence and emotion.Alignment, Identity, and Individual GrowthAlignment—not perfection—is the goal of self-actualization.“Self-actualization coaching isn't about judgment. It's about helping people align with their values.”Different people prioritize different values: connection, power, freedom, meaning.Encourages reflection: What roles do you cherish most? What do you say yes and no to?“Ask: What's my reason for being? What legacy do I want to leave?”Moral Psychology and MatteringDiscusses mattering and the perils of performative self-importance.“Some people matter too much… they take up so much space, there's no room for others.”Proposes a “mattering ecology” for shared dignity and contribution. On moral flexibility: “People who scream loudest often don't like themselves.”Calls for emotional regulation, reflection, and collective moral grounding in a polarized world.Relationships, Whole Love, and SpiritualityIntroduces the concept of “whole love”—where all parts of the self are seen, accepted, and growing together.“It's as simple and as hard as that.”Critiques spiritual narcissism and “dark empaths” who use others for ego validation.Real empathy requires asking: “Am I helping this person for their sake—or because I need to be needed?”“Good character doesn't need an excuse.”Practical Takeaways & Coaching ToolsDirects listeners to Choose Growth, a practical workbook co-authored with Dr. Jordan Feingold.Reflection prompts: What am I proud of? Have you ever hesitated when you knew God was calling you to act? Maybe it was speaking up in a meeting, addressing a team issue, or saying “yes” to an opportunity you didn't feel ready for. I've been there. And I know this: delayed obedience is often disobedience. Today, we're going to talk about that—about obedience in leadership, and how to take three practical, biblical steps that will help you stop hesitating and start leading boldly in obedience to God. For many of us as female Christian leaders, being disobedient isn't about defiance, it's about fear. Fear of getting it wrong. Fear of what others will think. Fear of stepping out without knowing the full plan. But friend, God is not looking for perfection. He's looking for a yes. Obedience is less about having all the answers and more about having the willingness to follow. Have a listener question? Submit it at https://www.womenoffaithinleadership.com   Next steps:  1. This is the second episode in our series entitled "The Path to Peace." In this podcast episode of Monday Morning Moments, I share one of my top 5 verses in the Bible! It's a command with a promise and a truth that has carried me through many moments in my life. I pray it encourages you today.  Show Notes:Isaiah 41:10"fear not, for I am with you;be not dismayed, for I am your God;I will strengthen you, I will help you,I will uphold you with my righteous right hand."It's the voice of God speaking through the prophet Isaiah commanding us not to be afraid. I have always love the definitive declaration that this verse begins. God doesn't just say "Don't Worry." He exclaims "Fear Not!" and "Be Not Dismayed!" (Emphasis added). These are commands and they represent postures, not just occasional gestures. And then He gives us the reasons why we should not fear any circumstance in our life:- Because He is with us.- Because He will strengthen us.- Because He will uphold us with His righteous right hand. The power of this verse is found not in the words of the command but in the presence of the One who is with us in and through every moment. The path to peace is often filled with winding roads and challenging circumstances, but God is present helping us navigate this road to find true peace and purpose. Whatever He is calling you to do today, know that you don't have to fear...because He is with you in every step of your journey. And He can truly help you make the most of your moments!
