En Allemagne, la sécheresse historique de 2026 fait ressurgir des souvenirs du passé dans les fleuves du pays : des carcasses de navires de guerre datant de la Seconde Guerre mondiale, des squelettes de soldats et, à l'Est, près de Dresde, des « pierres de la faim ». Plus connues sous le nom de Hungersteine, ces pierres normalement immergées dans l'eau apparaissent lorsque le niveau de l'Elbe est très bas. À l'époque, leur apparition était annonciatrice de famine.  De notre correspondante à Pirna, Quelques gouttes tombent sur Pirna, mais elles ne vont pas permettre de recouvrir la Hungersteine située dans l'Elbe. « Non, les précipitations actuelles ne suffisent pas, indique Jan-Michael Lange, géologue et spécialiste de ces pierres. Il faudra encore un certain temps avant que le niveau de l'Elbe revienne à la normale. » Et même s'il a l'habitude de venir ici pour ses recherches, le géologue est toujours ébahi devant cette roche de 3 mètres sur 5, la plus grande Hungersteine d'Allemagne. « C'est vraiment impressionnant de voir cet immense bloc ici, dans l'Elbe, qui semble à nu, poursuit le géologue. D'autant qu'en temps normal, on ne le verrait pas du tout… Il serait complètement immergé sous l'eau. » Sur la pierre, des dates inscrites : celles des pires sécheresses que l'Elbe a connues depuis 1707, première année visible à l'œil nu. « Pour 2015 et 2018, je vois les inscriptions, mais personne n'a encore fait celle de 2026 », note le chercheur. Avec sa collègue Petra Walther, hydrologue à l'Office régional de Saxe pour l'environnement et l'agriculture, ils ont recensé la centaine de « pierres de la faim » présentes sur les rives de l'Elbe. « L'Elbe est prédestinée à ces pierres en raison de sa roche, un grès très facile à travailler, explique l'hydrologue. Et puis, le fleuve est depuis des siècles un lieu de vie pour les humains. Ils ont tout simplement vécu au rythme de l'eau, marquant sur la pierre les niveaux des sécheresses et des crues, afin de savoir à quoi s'attendre dans un avenir proche. » Leur nom, Hungersteine, rappelle la dépendance de ces populations passées avec le fleuve. « Quand il y avait peu d'eau dans la rivière, tout le monde en souffrait, souligne-t-elle, il y avait alors une famine, car on ne pouvait pas récolter de céréales, la navigation était interrompue, les poissons mouraient dans l'eau… » À lire aussiAllemagne: l'industrie en souffrance face à la sécheresse qui abaisse le niveau du Rhin Des dates qui se rapprochent Et aujourd'hui, ces pierres ne sont que la preuve d'un changement climatique qui s'accélère, avec des dates notées qui se rapprochent de plus en plus. Mais l'espoir de voir les choses changer grâce à elles est mince, selon Jan-Michael Lange : « Je ne suis vraiment pas sûr que ces pierres de la faim permettent de sensibiliser les gens sur ce sujet. » « Lorsque la sécheresse a des conséquences directes sur le quotidien des gens, alors on avance dans la prise de conscience, ajoute sa collègue, comme lorsque le robinet est coupé, ou que des restrictions d'eau sont en place. » Un manque de prise de conscience alors que l'Elbe est tombée à son plus bas niveau à Pirna le week-end dernier avec 79 cm de profondeur, contre en moyenne 1 m 40 en temps normal.
