The Backwoods Giveaway Retreat almost didn't happen. Three weeks before the event, the lodge double-booked us. No backup plan. Six random winners already selected. Sponsors committed. Trucks loaded. Momentum rolling. And that was just the beginning. In this episode, we break down everything that went wrong leading up to the weekend — from scrambling to find a new lodge, to heat exchanger failures, broken belts, no snow for weeks, and riding 16 deep in shallow conditions. But this isn't just a recap. It's about:• Pivoting under pressure• Leading in chaos• Snowmobile culture• Building something bigger than perfect conditionsWe talk about:– The scramble to save the retreat– How a local mechanic saved Jose's sled– Meeting the six winners (including an engaged couple who both won)– Riding in a big group without losing control– Why snowmobile culture continues to surprise us in the best wayEvery year we pick six completely random riders and spend a weekend together in the mountains. And every year, it reminds us why we do this. It's never perfect. It's always worth it. If you've ever wondered what goes into hosting something like this — this episode is the real behind-the-scenes.Check out SledSend Merch Here

https://slasrpodcast.com/      SLASRPodcast@gmail.com   Welcome to Episode 222 of the Sounds Like a Search and Rescue Podcast, where this week we've got a packed show — we're talking winter conditions in the White Mountains, some SAR news,  big news out of Lincoln Woods with trail closures coming for several weeks.  Also - Stomp is back and has stories from snowmobile guiding  a near-death moment, moose encounters, and some rumors floating around about a possible shoulder-season live show. Plus we've got news out of England involving people behaving badly, a winter gear check-in with Nick's new Black Diamond Mercury Mitts, favorite cold-weather trail foods, and a reminder that if your wool isn't as warm as it used to be… We'll do some pop-culture talk, including A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms and a rundown of some early Oscar buzz movies, we'll talk about beer, recent hikes, future plans, and we've got another great batch of listener hikes of the week. And for a  history segment, we're going way back — we're digging into early Appalachian Mountain Club field meetings and what hiking looked like in the late 1800s when it was very much a group sport, with large organized excursions, committee oversight, and post-hike reporting that sounds nothing like modern hiking culture. All that plus sponsors, donations, stickers, swag, and everything else you've come to expect. On this special edition podcast, we are joined by our great friend Christy Walcott, Vice President of all things FUN at the Gaylord Michigan Tourism Bureau.Christy is actually the Director of Marketing and Communications for the Bureau, which really does mean that her job involves taking visitors out to show them the very best that Gaylord has to offer. It's why we try to have her on as much as we can, because she not only lives in Gaylord, she gets on out there and experiences all the things that this fun Northern Michigan town has to offer. She's been on the show before, sharing everything from summer sink hole lakes for swimming to best places to paddle board. One thing she always has in spades is local restaurant recommendations, and more often than not, very specific DISH recommendations from said restaurants. Christy not only wants you to visit, she wants to make sure you try the best things on the menu. On this episode of Behind the Mitten, Christy gets extra specific for this 2026 winter season, which is turning out to be a bang up one for the Gaylord region, with oodles of snow piling up all over, creating amazing conditions for all the outdoor winter activities you can imagine. Gaylord is a mecca for snowmobilers, who can use the town as their base, and then explore all of northern Michigan via sled. Christy shares a fun itinerary for a, now get this, snowmobile foodie tour.Very cool, right? Christy takes us to places in town like Big Buck Brewery and Benethums, as well as places outside town, like The Thirsty Sturgeon and Paul's Pub, which is located just off Trail #403.You certainly don't have to travel via sled to experience all the great places that Christy suggests, you can also hop in your car and drive. But there is something both magical and downright wild about snowmobiling, so if you can give it a go, we highly recommend. There are places where you can rent snowmobiles, and all the gear too, in the Gaylord area. We've done this before and had an absolute blast. Let's just say that NEW snowmobiles are nothing like OLD 1980's snowmobiles, and we very much like the heated seat and handles. We also really recommend the Gaylord Tourism website, all the information that you need to explore this area can be found here.

A man from rural Gilboa, New York finally shares a story he kept silent about for decades. At just five years old, while riding a snowmobile with his father, he witnessed something in the snowy woods that didn't match anything he'd ever been taught was possible. What he saw weren't the massive, towering creatures people expect — but two smaller, upright beings standing in the trees, watching him in complete silence. That moment stayed buried… until later discoveries began surfacing.Years afterward, unexplained 14-inch footprints, eerily straight trackways, and multiple whispered sightings from trusted locals began emerging across Schoharie County, West Fulton, and the forests surrounding the Gilboa Reservoir. Hunters, families, and lifelong outdoorsmen all reported encounters they couldn't explain — and most never told publicly. In this episode, the witness connects the dots between his childhood encounter and a growing pattern of activity that suggests something has been quietly moving through this region for generations.

He purchased that Cat from the first Arctic Cat dealer in Green Bay, a local shoe repair shop which had a total available inventory of two machines. Jorgensen was fortunate to become a riding member of the pioneer cross-country snowmobile group, the Peninsula Pathfinders of Upper Michigan. He participated in the club's first three long-distance rides, including the 1970 trip across the giant Mackinac Bridge which connects lower Michigan to the Upper Peninsula. Although he owned the Arctic Cat, he had been convinced to ride an Eskimo snowmobile and it may have been the only time an Eskimo sled crossed the Big Mac.

Now that farm fields have been harvested it's time for snowmobilers to get active. Not on their machine, but in posting the trails that riders will follow when the snow arrives. In Wisconsin, that's a big job! Ben Jarboe finds out about the human workforce that has to mobilize from Lori Heideman, president of the Association of Wisconsin Snowmobile Clubs. She explains how they prepare the nearly 25,000 miles of trails for snowmobile season. She also gives an update on some of the things the association is working on. Precipitation is on the way to Wisconsin beginning tomorrow morning. What form will it be? Stu Muck says with temperatures in the 40's, it'll probably remain rain this time. The federal government shutdown forced some changes in consumer buying patterns and grocers are noticing it. Kiley Allan follows up on the trend with Nick Novak, President of the Midwest Food Processors Association. He says consumers are being careful with their available dollars and want to know what they're getting. He highlights the value they're finding in canned and frozen vegetables for example. With very few ingredients on the package, consumers are feeling confident about the price and the product. Nebraska has surpassed Texas as the number one cattle feedlot state. Their governor, Jim Pillen, is also very happy to report that every bushel of soybeans produced in the state stays in the state. He says with all the anxiety over China being out of the marketplace, it's a comfort to Nebraska growers. Wisconsin dairy is on a roll! Dairy Farmers of Wisconsin Board Member Ali Straschinske says farmer checkoff dollars are driving real results at home and abroad, according to the annual report. From marketing wins that made WisconsinCheese.com rank #1 on Google, to cheese exports reaching over 50 countries, today's Check In With Dairy Checkoff highlights the quality, care, and pride of Wisconsin dairy. After a couple November snows, it may have some Wisconsin residents thinking about the upcoming snowmobile season, but what might not get thought about is the preparation that needs to be done on the nearly 25,000 miles of trails in the state. Through the summer it is inevitable that some branches will grow and trees may fall. Lori Heideman, the President of the Association of Wisconsin Snowmobile Clubs, says that it takes every bit of the 36,000 members to make sure the trails are ready for winter fun.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Paralyzed by the shock, submerged in freezing water, and left unconscious, she awoke six feet away from the snowmobile — with a spark plug in her hand and no memory of how she got there.Experts from the snowmobile company later told her: she should have died.
