Thriving Adoptees - Inspiration For Adoptive Parents & Adoptees
Many adoptees - myself included - delay the search for our birth mothers for fear of rejection. We don't believe we could handle it. We are still feeling the aftershocks of the initial rejection. Lori shares what she's learned about surviving rejection, underestimating our emotional resilience and ability to bounce back. We both loved this deep and profound conversation and hope you do too. Here's a bit about Lori and her book:Jakiela is a Professor of English/Creative Writing at The University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg, where she directs the Creative & Professional Writing Program. She writes a monthly column, "Stories of Our Neighbors"–modeled on the work of the great oral historian Studs Terkel–for Pittsburgh Magazine, and is the recipient of multiple Golden Quill Awards from the Press Club of Western Pennsylvania. She has taught in the graduate MFA program at Chatham University, in the undergraduate writing program at The State University of New York at Purchase, classes and workshops for Creative Nonfiction Foundation, and is currently on the adjunct faculty of the Doctor of Ministry program in Creative Writing at the Pittsburgh Theological Seminary. A former international flight attendant, she lives in her hometown, Trafford, PA, with her husband, the author Dave Newman, and their children. After her adoptive mother's death, Lori Jakiela, at the age of forty, begins to seek the identity of her birth parents. In the midst of this loss, Jakiela also finds herself with a need to uncover her family's medical history to gather answers for her daughter's newly revealed medical ailments. This memoir brings together these parallel searches while chronicling intergenerational questions of family. Through her work, Jakiela examines both the lives we are born with and the lives we create for ourselves. Desires for emotional resolution comingle with concerns of medical inheritance and loss in this honest, humorous, and heartbreaking memoir.https://www.amazon.com/Belief-Its-Kind-Truth-Maybe/dp/1938769422https://twitter.com/lorijakielahttps://www.linkedin.com/in/lori-jakiela-2555716https://www.lorijakiela.net/

This episode of the podcast is a little bit different than others. A while back I did a random Instagram live and my friend Bav jumped on the live. The intention was just to chit chat, but we went deep and ended up recording an entire podcast episode! Keep in mind that this is a very raw conversation, meaning the audio isn't the sharpest, but everything still comes through. We talk about so many different topics, but the real highlight of our conversation is staying authentic online and avoiding the pitfalls of social media by being very real with yourself. It's all jump rope related, but a little deeper than just that. Please enjoy! If you liked the podcast, would you please consider leaving a short review on Apple Podcasts? "It's ok to make mistakes, and it's also ok to share those failures!" - Ervin ConcepcionErvin Concepcion started jumping during the beginning of lockdown in 2020, and since then has learned a tremendous amount of skills and even started selling jump ropes to his community in the Philippines. Also this guy has dislocated his shoulder more times than anyone I know and he has a really hilarious way of explaining these injuries, which we get into during the podcast. We also talk about how competitive sports help teach optimism, how to approach selling jump ropes, Ervin's process learning to jump rope, Ervin's history playing competitive tennis, and a bunch more. "You don't just have to focus on the physical aspect of jump rope. It's an extremely mental sport as well!" - Dylan PlummerDylan Plummer is is a decorated competitive jump rope athlete, and one of the original jumpers who used to post to YouTube over a decade ago. Dylan and I originally met digitally during those YouTube days, but this is actually the first full conversation we've had! And we go very deep on this one. We start out discussing his computer science profession and how he's using machine learning in the biology field (which is extremely interesting), and then we move into more jump rope focused topics such as the accessibility of information in our sport, how the impossible becomes possible, whether or not older jumpers over 20 can be faster than youth, and a whole lot more. Please enjoy! If you liked the podcast, would you please consider leaving a short review on Apple Podcasts? This is the first time I've done a group podcast, so there are a few scratches and cyber wind here and there, but I can assure that these brought some solid hilarity and perspective to the show. We talk about so much, including how each person started jumping, how they all found each other, where jump rope has taken them, and much more. Please enjoy! If you liked the podcast, would you please consider leaving a short review on Apple Podcasts? It takes less than 60 seconds, and it really makes a difference in helping to spread the sport of jump rope! I also love reading the reviews! For show notes and past guests, please visit natekg.com/jump-rope-blog.Check out everything new I'm doing (tutorials, email newsletter, combos, etc.) at natekg.com/new.Discover Nate's jump rope coaching programs: natekg.com/coaching.Follow Nate:Instagram: instagram.com/nate_kgYouTube: youtube.com/CoachNateKGFacebook: facebook.com/natekgPast guests on the podcast include: Unconventional Ropestress Sonny Smith, Luke Boon, Mike Fry, LJ LaVecchia, Coach Chris Walker, The Jump Rope Dudes, Brian Hsu, Stewart Isaacs, Lee Reisig, Chris Holmes, Declan McCarthy, Nick Woodard, Kaylee Woodard, Seth Ingram, Don Michael, Francis Feraren, Pakhung Jai, Dylan Plummer, Sharina Isabel, Alysia Mattson, Dave Newman, Michelle Fongson, and more.
