57: Practical Tips for Remote Learning During School Closures

Shake Up Learning Show

Full blog post and show notes available here. Let's get real, y'all! While the world is battling the coronavirus, teachers and schools are scrambling to figure out what this home learning thing looks like. I've put together 12 practical tips for remote learning during school closures. To be clear, this is about this particular crisis situation. These are not the same tips that I would share for a normal school day. Let's keep this practical. Let's prioritize what's really important right now. Let's share and collaborate to make the best of this situation. 12 Practical Tips for Remote Learning During School Closures I wish I could do this for you. I wish I could take this burden off of the many teachers who are in a panic right now. Take comfort in the fact that we are all in this together. Here's some practical advice to consider for home learning during school closures. 1. Grace is Greater Than Grades We’ve never faced this problem before, and we need to make sure our priorities are in the right place. While many are focused on the tech, and how to deliver lessons electronically, we must face a harsher reality. This isn’t just an eLearning day. This is not a snow day. This is UNPRECEDENTED. Students, teachers, and parents are scared and suddenly balancing fears and anxiety with working and teaching from home. All of us, including you and me, need a little grace right now. Under normal circumstances, I would never recommend completion grades, but right now, they may be the best we can get. I wrote more about grace in this post. 2. Prioritize Emotional Needs For some of our students, we are their only safe place. They miss their teachers and the safety of school. Even our students that have safe and loving homes miss their classmates and teachers. Let's prioritize the emotional needs above the learning needs. I always come back to Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs, and meeting these basic needs is more important than a worksheet or checklist. If you can, schedule a daily or weekly office hours check-in with your class. If your school has enabled a video conferencing tool like Zoom or Hangouts Meet, set aside a couple of hours to be online for any students who want to chat. Record a good morning video for your students. Show them your workspace, your family, your pet, anything to connect on a human level. Everyone is missing connections right now. Keep interactions light-hearted when possible. Try having a joke of the day, funny video of the day, or playing a game. 3. Choose a Platform and Stick with It! As I learned many weeks ago from my interview with Jennifer Pearson, a teacher who had been teaching her students in China remotely for many weeks, this is NOT the time to throw a bunch of new tools at our teachers and students. If you were using Google Classroom, or another LMS before your school closed, great! If not, you may be scrambling to figure this out--and that's okay. (Here are some cheat sheets to help with Google Classroom.) But as a campus, and as a teacher, choose your platform and stick with it! Consistency is your best friend right now. It doesn't need to be fancy. It doesn't need to be innovative. Create a one-stop-shop for your students--something I have always recommended. Whether that is Google Classroom, a Google Doc, a Google Site, SeeSaw, Microsoft Teams, whatever, keep it simple! Only use new tools if you haven't been using this kind of technology at all! We are in survival mode. If we can get kids to engage in any kind of learning right now, we should count ourselves lucky. 4. Prioritize Offline Activities for Equity We need more offline activities than online activities for multiple reasons: Digital equity is a significant problem in most areas, so we must give students offline options. Even students with devices and an Internet connection, shouldn't spend all day in front of a screen. The distractions online have always been an issue, but now more than ever, as coronavirus talks dominate every media. The stress of this on parents, teachers, and students is tremendous. Keep it simple! Give students offline options for every activity you assign. Get creative! Offline or paper choice boards, at home BINGO, scavenger hunts, and more, can keep students engaged and entertained. They don't have to require rigor and critical thinking right now. I'm sorry, but just keeping it real. 5. Use a Simple Weekly Checklist Jennifer Pearson also recommended the checklist idea, but I've seen so many crazy templates floating around, it's essential to keep things simple. It doesn't have to be daily. Many schools are embracing a partial week schedule, which I think is a good idea. Assigning activities for the week will simplify communications and the turn-in process. This can be a simple Google Doc or Word Doc, printed for those without access. I would even consider creating a 2-3 week checklist to simplify even more. Check out the weekly checklists shared in this post. 6. Reduce Work by AT LEAST HALF Jennifer Pearson learned early on that you cannot replicate the school schedule every day at home. She recommends reducing the workload by half. I say you may need to take that even further than half. Again, we cannot replicate the school day at home. 7. It's NOT About the FREE Tech Tools Times are tough. Remote teaching and learning is hard, and many teachers, students, and parents find themselves increasingly dependent on technology right now. I am happy to see technology embraced, even if it is out of necessity. However, the focus of what we teach should still be aligned with our learning goals, not the technology. In fact, now, more than ever, we need to be equitable, patient, and full of grace for all our learners. I get it. Right now, teachers need help. They are searching for it, and desperate to find a solution to help them manage this mess we call remote learning, home learning, distance learning...Heck! We don't even know what to call it because it is so new and unprecedented. Take a deep breath. You got this. You are a teacher, and our bottom line is still about learning and supporting our students, not about finding the BEST tech tool. Yes, it's great that so many are available during this crisis, but these giant lists are not useful to the average classroom teacher. As Jennifer Pearson says, use what your students know. New tools can cause assignments to be late or wrong and can add to the anxiety over the situation. Digital learning leaders may find these lists useful, but for the average teacher or parent, it just adds to the confusion and chaos. Please do not overwhelm your classroom teachers with one hundred free tech tools. If you are a leader, take this list down to 3-7 tools for each grade level or subject area. 8. All Teacher Videos Should Be Recorded If you have the capability, record any live teacher videos, so students who cannot attend live don't feel left out. Even the ones without access may appreciate this when they return to school. While we have to be careful and follow privacy and protection laws for recording children if teachers are willing to record their lessons or a good morning video, let's make sure every child gets a chance to see it. That may mean that these are saved for later viewing for students without access. 9. Give Students DETAILED Directions Remember, without you there by their side; students have no context. They need even more detailed directions than usual. Here's a post on How to Package Your Digital Assignments that should give you some ideas. 10. No Assigned Group Work! As much as I usually encourage collaborative learning, now is not the time. This will over-complicate things for you and your students. Do not require that students collaborate or work together. Those students that can work together are already getting on Facetime to share the answers. Yes, I said it, and you know it will happen. Yet another reason to keep it simple and understand we can't control the environment. 11. Fail Forward We all have to have a growth mindset through this process and accept the fact that this is not going to be perfect. The control freak teachers and administrators will have to let that go. There is no way to control this. There is no way to know precisely what is happening in the home learning environment. It's all going to be fine, even if it is not perfect. Even if there are things we don't know and cannot predict at this moment, it is what it is. I beg administrators not to micromanage teachers and students during this time. Even if you ask teachers and students to track EVERYTHING right now, it will not be accurate. Treat your teachers as the professionals they are. Trust them to know what's happening with their students. Just because you can't control it, doesn't mean we should be micromanaging. This doesn't help the situation at all, and in fact, it is adding more stress and anxiety to an already stressful situation. No matter what your role in education, we all have to let go and accept that this is out of our control. You will learn things from day one. You will adapt and be flexible because you are an educator, and that's what we've always done. 12. Practice Self Care Don't forget to take care of yourself during all of this! Being a teacher is hard under normal circumstances. You are about to put on your superhero cape and FLY! I know you can do what needs to be done, but be sure you take time to relax, exercise, pray, meditate, take a long bath, whatever you can do to keep your stress and anxiety down so you can be there for your students. And of course, practice social distancing, stay home if you can, and by all means, WASH YOUR HANDS! This is NOT Our Tech Moment. As much as technology has suddenly become a priority, even for the most resistant teachers, this is not our moment. By "our," I mean all of us who work in edtech, support edtech, promote edtech, and love edtech. Leaders in digital learning are also suddenly very popular, and this is our moment to help and support. Technology will help us survive this, but we also have to accept that survival mode means we can't expect innovative, dynamic learning experiences in an environment we can't control. Even in schools that are working hard to send home devices and hot spots, we have to accept the fact that we have ZERO control over what happens in the home. When we return to school, I do believe there will be a renewed interest in digital learning, and then we will have our moment. Thank you for all you do! I don't think there has been a time when I have ever been more proud to be an educator! Resources to Help FREE Resources, Podcasts, Blog Posts, Cheat Sheets, & More! How our childhood affects our relationship with food and our bodies is an important discussion. It's no secret that for many of us, childhood is where we first heard words that our bodies weren't good enough or that we couldn't trust ourselves around food.  And it can be more paramount in families with other "dysfunctional" elements and brokenness. This week I'm talking with my friend, Elizabeth Oates. Elizabeth is an author, speaker, and mother of 5 who is passionate about helping women ditch the guilt and embrace freedom. After growing up in a broken family herself, she found real freedom beyond her childhood pains and wants to now spread that same truth to others. She wrote the book, Mending Broken Branches: When God Reclaims Your Dysfunctional Family Tree, and she is also podcast host of the show, Asking for a Friend.  In this interview, we discuss: What Elizabeth's definition of "dysfunction" is How Elizabeth's dysfunctional childhood affected her relationship with food and her body How her lack of a father figure affected her childhood How her spiritual life transformed her healing The differences between shame around food and shame with exercise---> some really interesting lightbulb moments for ya here! How she speaks to her own children regarding food What Dr. Reinold thinks of FitBits, counters, and tracking devices and so much more! It's Not About the Food.... The Gratitude of Loss is the title of the 2nd chapter in Andrews' book, "It's Not About the Sex". He discusses that grief and loss are things that nobody talks about and how grief is almost taboo in our society. Grief can be a more comprehensive way of moving towards healing. He explains that the process of breaking up with your addiction is really like saying goodbye to it. The gratitude of loss is another way to experience a more dimensional self.

What draws someone into an extremist movement? Is it about ideology? Race? Politics? So many of our discussions about extremism try to explain away the problem by reducing its complexity, but that brings us further and further away from actually solving it. Deeyah Khan is a British documentary filmmaker and human rights activist. She’s the creator of two extraordinary films airing on Netflix right now, White Right: Meeting the Enemy and Jihad: A Story of the Others. The films do a remarkable job of showing why these opposing brands of extremism are both similar and reciprocal, and why the people they attract mirror each other in so many ways. Khan spent hours with the most extreme figures she could find, and made a real effort to understand what’s motivating them. She sat down with Vox’s interviews writer, Sean Illing, for a conversation about what she discovered, why the roots of fanaticism are much deeper than we suppose, and what we have to do win the battle against hatred. Dr. Tom Stubbs joins the Decoding Superhuman podcast to speak about methylation testing, biological age, and how to use epigenetics for high performance.   Epigenetics is the only measure of biological age that, independent of the tissue or the sample that you take... whether it be saliva, a liver sample, a urine sample, a blood sample, you get age prediction. Now, if you take telomere length, for instance, you only actually get a weak positive correlation with age in blood. Dr. Tom Stubbs   Who is Dr. Tom Stubbs?   Tom obtained a First-Class Honours degree in Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry from Magdalen College, Oxford. Tom subsequently undertook a PhD in epigenetics at the University of Cambridge, which was broadly on the development and implementation of novel wet-lab and computational methods aimed at improving the understanding of epigenetics (specifically DNA methylation).   Over the last four years, Tom has been working at the forefront of epigenetic research and has authored a number of high impact scientific publications and patented two models. An epigenetics test enables individuals to predict the effects of environmental and lifestyle factors on their biological age. Tom realized that access to information about a person’s epigenetic clock would be incredibly useful from both personal and public health perspectives. Tom co-founded Chronomics, helping individuals to understand how previously unseen factors might have lasting effects on their health ahead of time.   Tom worked alongside Dani and Toby to define the first models, bringing Charles into the team to communicate the science behind Chronomics to the public. The company is unique in its field, providing people with proactive, personalized and consumer-centric health management.   Key Highlights of the Frontier Epigenetics Podcast?   [4:25] What is epigenetics? 22 February 2016 - This week Will and I ended up with so much to say that we did the whole show ourselves. I open with an update on the economic crisis in Puerto Rico and I follow that with a quick take on economic canaries, Maersk and CSX. Will follows me with news about the terrific campaign of DeRay Mckesson in the mayoral race in Baltimore. DeRay has released spectacular position papers and proposals and is running the kind of campaign which deserves to draw support from progressives across the nation. I'm up next with answers to listener questions relating to the article, "It's Not About the Debt," by Chad Stone. I get into some detail about why using debt-to-GDP ratio as a metric makes no logical sense. As part of my explanation I draw from the excellent Levy Economics Institute Working Paper (Number 603), "Does Excessive Sovereign Debt Really Hurt Growth? A Critique of This Time It's Different, by Reinhart and Rogoff." We also mark the passing of the gifted author and thinker, Umberto Eco. Both Will and I have been deeply impressed by his works and given the bent of the current US elections many of Eco's literary themes seem inordinately timely. In Extra Mad I venture out into the weeds of GDP; what it is, what it isn't, what's wrong with it and the various options. If you listen to the podcast version of the show I'm betting you will be surprised by relevancy of this topic. We do have new interstitial music this week from Bua, the great traditional Irish band. Check out their website and support their music. Traditional music artists have an especially challenging road and artists as fluent and musically astute as Bua are rare. In all this talk about gender equaity in the workplace, T&A tackle the deeper equality issue of approaching work and success with feminine qualities versus masculine, and how both men and women can benefit from ditching their old paradigms and finding a new way of approaching success.  The girls talk with Lisa Marie Jenkins, professional coach, speaker, & author of 'WAKE UP, BEAUTY! It's Not About the Prince' on how exactly we can go about this,  why it's so important and how this affects our male/female relationships. Both sexes were playing very specific roles (11:40) The 70’s moved women into the angry, bra burning stage which was necessary to get the ball rolling but that is NOT what feminism is about (11:51) The year 1985 is a benchmark-that’s the year when women started earning 50% of all college degrees (12:12)  Today, we earn 60-65% of all degrees, Bachelors and Masters’ combined and we’ve been in the work force since the mid-80’s (12:16)  Can a woman be nice and competent in today’s workplace? (15:15)  Despite the higher numbers for advanced degrees, women only represent 4.7% of CEO’s in Fortune 500 companies and at major tech companies women only represent 20% of employees in all roles (18:30)  Where and how do women struggle the most in the workplace?  (21:00) What is ‘tentative speech’ and how does it hurt women?  (21:52)  Find Relevant Links & FULL Show Notes HERE: http://www.tatalksex.com/she-doesnt-want-sex-could-be-her-work-place-w-lisa-marie-jenkins-ep-68/

Family mealtimes should be fun. But many parents find sitting at the table to be totally stressful as they try to get all the right nutrients into their kids' mouths. Sound familiar? What had been a simple and joyful task—providing her daughter with healthful foods—became a struggle. So Dina put on her sociologist's hat to find the solutions. LINER NOTES

Pure ImprovisationBetty Carter was born Lillie Mae Jones in Flint, Michigan on May 16, 1929.At a young age, she began the study of piano at the Detroit Conservatory of Music, and by the time she was a teenager she was already sitting in with Charlie Parker and other bop musicians when they performed in Detroit. After winning a local amateur contest, she turned professional at age 16, hooking up with the Lionel Hampton band by 1948, billed as Lorraine Carter. Hampton was the man who hung the nickname 'Betty Be-Bop' on her (a nickname she hated, as she found bebop limiting and wanted to do more than just scat), but it stuck, and ultimately she changed her stage name to Betty Carter. At the age of 21, she traveled to New York with the Hampton band and set up home there.Betty spent the early 1950s as a singer with different groups. She did several shows at the Apollo, playing with such notables as Max Roach and Dizzy Gillespie, toured with Miles Davis in 1958 and 1959, and spent much of the rest of the time on the outskirts of the jazz scene. Her refusal to adopt a more "mainstream" jazz style led to difficulty in finding bookings and making recordings. She made her first recordings in 1955 with a then-unknown piano player named Ray Bryant. The album, Meet Betty Carter and Ray Bryant, was little received, and her second set of recordings, with the Gigi Gryce band in 1956, languished unpublished until 1980. By 1958, she was ready to record again, and another little known album, I Can't Help It, was the result, followed closely by a recording on the Peacock label (a Texas gospel label), Out There. She was developing a reputation as a fiercely independent woman (an attitude she developed based in part on her interactions with Gladys Hampton, Lionel's no-nonsense wife) and a devoted jazz singer, and her popularity among the inner jazz circles was high, but critical and popular acclaim eluded her. She was becoming well-known for her signature style that combined off-beat interpretations of classic tunes and wild scat-singing that never seemed to find the right beat. Even a move to the ABC label for her 1960 album The Modern Sound of Betty Carter did little to help that. She needed a break, and it came in the form of Ray Charles.Ray Charles, on a recommendation from Miles Davis, agreed to take Betty on tour with him in the late 1950s. Enchanted by her voice and looking for a partner to record a series of duets, he enlisted Ms. Carter in a project that became Ray Charles and Betty Carter. The album, recorded in 1961, became an instant critical and popular smash; the single Baby It's Cold Outside gave Betty her first introduction into the popular music scene (indeed, at the 1997 White House ceremony where President Clinton presented Ms. Carter with a National Medal of Arts, the President said, "Hearing her sing 'Baby, It's Cold Outside' makes you want to curl up in front of the fire, even in summertime."). The sessions took on almost legendary status; after fifteen years in the business, fame had finally found Betty Carter. And Betty Carter chose her family. She was raising two sons at the time, Myles and Kagle Redding, and chose to concentrate on that rather than capitalize on her recent success. Other than the 1963 Atco album Round Midnight (which showcased a different side of Betty that many critics strongly disliked), and a very short 1964 United Artists album called Inside Betty Carter, she made no recordings between 1961 and 1968. She still performed, doing club dates mostly around the New York area, but the name of Betty Carter eventually faded back into obscurity again. By 1969, though, Betty was ready to get back into music. The problem was - no one seemed to want her.She started her road back with a live recording on the Roulette album. Finally - Betty Carter (an apt title) is considered one of her finest works, but it didn't garner much interest at the time. A second live recording, again titled 'Round Midnight, met with the same fate. Unable to drum up enough interest and tired of trying to satisfy the demands of recording companies, she came up with a solution - she founded her own company. Bet-Car was founded in 1971, and would be the soul source of her recordings until she signed with Verve in 1988. The Bet-Car years produced some of Betty's finest albums - The Betty Carter Album, Betty Carter (later rereleased as At the Village Vanguard), Now It's My Turn, and I Didn't Know What Time it Was - culminating in the December 1979 recordings that became The Audience with Betty Carter, called by some the finest vocal jazz recording ever made. Performances at the Newport Jazz Festival in 1977 and 1978 helped solidify Betty's place in the jazz world, not only as a major vocal talent but also as a discoverer of new talent (including through the years such names as John Hicks, Mulgrew Miller, Cyrus Chestnut, Mark Shim, Dave Holland, Stephen Scott and Kenny Washington). Her Bet-Car recordings continued into the 1980s with Whatever Happened to Love? and a landmark session with fellow jazz legend Carmen McRae recorded live at a series of 1987 San Francisco dates. By 1988, finally someone took notice of her talents: Verve, on the lookout for under-appreciated jazz singers such as Abbey Lincoln and Shirley Horn, signed Ms. Carter to a contract and immediately set about rereleasing the majority of her old material. In 1988, she burst back on to the popular jazz scene with Look What I Got, the album that earned her only Grammy award. The next decade produced several more outstanding recordings that featured a more mature sound - not reined in by any means, but perhaps softer, Betty Balladeer instead of Betty Be-Bop. She garnered Grammy nominations for 1990's Droppin' Things and 1992's It's Not About the Melody. She continued to feature young, up-and-coming musicians on most of her albums, a practice broken only on the 1994 album Feed the Fire, considered by some to be her finest work since Audience. Betty remained active in developing new musicians through the Jazz Ahead program, founded in 1993, that brought unknown jazz musicians to New York to work with her. She performed at the White House in 1994, and was a major headliner at Verve's 50th anniverary celebration in Carnegie Hall. She continued to stay active with her teaching right up until her death from pancreatic cancer on September 26, 1998. With Betty Carter gone, the jazz world has been left a gaping hole that no one artist could ever hope to fill. While other female (and male) jazz singers will come along, it's doubtful that anyone will be able to match Betty's combination of singing talent, compositional ideas, and willingness to teach. It's up to those of us who remain to ensure that her legacy grows and that the generations that ensue will have the pleasure- no, the honor - of sitting home, late at night, and drifting off into Betty Carter's world.Jazz is about the immediacy of the creative process. No other music allows so much personal freedom and no singer takes advantage of it like Betty Carter. To listen to Betty Carter on SOJP CLICK HERE!
