“The greatest among you must be your servant. Whoever exalts himself will be humbled; but whoever humbles himself will be exalted.” Matthew 23:11–12If you were to plan out the ideal future for yourself, what would it look like? Imagine if you were not constrained by budget or resources. Imagine if you could pick to do anything you wanted, to go anywhere you wanted, and enjoy any activity that you wanted. Imagine the greatest experience you could possibly have. What would that be? Most people would immediately think about indulging in the greatest pleasures imaginable. A life of the most luxurious accommodations, the best food, the most beautiful scenery and the most relaxing and enjoyable time possible. But would that truly be the “ideal future for yourself?”The Gospel passage above is very clear. Greatness is found in servanthood. Exaltation is enjoyed only through humility. Is the ideal lifestyle one that is filled with indulgence, entertainment, luxury, and the like? Certainly not. The ideal life, the greatest life, the most exalted life is the life of the most humble service of others as possible. That's essentially what Jesus tells us in this passage. Do you believe that?Note that Jesus uses the words “greatest” and “must” in the same sentence. These two words are both quite definitive. There is no one greater than the “greatest,” and the path to that greatness requires, without exception, that the greatest be a servant of everyone else. In many ways, this truth defies most human conceptions of greatness. Most often, if someone is considered “great,” then they are served and treated with an honor and respect not given to most. For example, if you had someone of great importance over to your home for dinner, you would most likely wait on them. Of course, service in this context is much more than waiting on tables or providing a meal. Though that is a blessed way to serve others and to express love, Jesus' concept of service goes far beyond this. How do we serve as one who is truly great? We do so especially by humbling ourselves. Humility is the greatest form of service we can render another.Jesus was, without question, the humblest person to ever live. Only His mother shared perfectly in this holy virtue. Humility enables a person to break out of every selfish tendency and turn their love to the good of the other. Jesus did this first by becoming Incarnate in the womb of His dear mother. The Eternal Son of God did not become man because it somehow benefited Him in a self-centered way. He did it because He loved us and His Incarnation benefited us. The Son of God did not allow others to mock Him, ridicule Him and ultimately murder Him because it somehow benefitted Him. He did it so that He could enter death and destroy it so that we could rise with Him. He did it for us. And we could go through every passage of the Gospels and see that everything Jesus did was done for others and never done out of a selfish desire. This self-giving service our Lord offered every day was a fruit of the incredible humility that He lived. Jesus did everything He did out of His love for others and with humility so as to bring salvation and transformation to their eternal souls. In our lives, we need to make a fundamental choice. Am I going to live for myself? Or am I going to live for others? It seems as though very few people live fully for others. It is difficult to take our eyes off ourselves and turn them only to the good of others. But if we realize that living for others is also the path to our own greatness and ultimate exaltation, then it becomes much easier. Serving others, especially in a spiritual way by which you do all you can to help them grow closer to God, is what will make you great. Nothing else can do so. Believe that and live it.Reflect, today, upon a life of true greatness. Reflect, especially, upon how you can live such a life. How can you more completely serve others? How can you make their holiness your primary goal? How can you help others grow in their love of God? Humble yourself and turn your eyes from yourself to others. Doing so will make an eternal difference for others and also for yourself. My exalted Lord, You are exalted far above all others. You are Greatness Itself. The life You lived, dear Lord, was one of the greatest humility. But it was in this humility that You accomplished the salvation of the world. Help me to imitate Your greatness by making the service of others my most central mission in life. I love you, my Lord. May I love and serve others with You. Jesus, I trust in You.Source of content: catholic-daily-reflections.comCopyright © 2021 My Catholic Life! Inc. All rights reserved. Used with permission via RSS feed.

We need some good days to look forward to, right church? Let's admit to ourselves that representing Jesus in a world that opposes his work is tiring. The lockdown makes everything harder. In places where tension between the church and government has increased, it may be difficult to recall the last time you had an easy moment as a believer. Let's face it, the social/political struggles find their way into our lives even if we do our best to avoid them. Do you long for a sense of ease and peace to return to your life? I have longed for that. I think I'm craving it. I need a good day. 1 Peter 3:8-12 reminds us of the promise of good days to come. He tells us how to bring that promise into the situations where we struggle with people while we represent Christ. I look forward to helping apply his teaching or our lives.Sermon NotesIf you would see good days…Dwayne Francois1 Peter 3:8-12If you are tired of the struggle with people and want to see good days…1. He is plenty smart to take care of us. We should therefore rely on his wisdom, not our own. Many Christians identify Wisdom in Proverbs 8 with Christ. Carnival season is dearly missed. Under normal circumstances, a bulk of the Caribbean carnival community would have been back home recuperating from a vibe-filled Trinidad carnival experience. BUT...that’s not the case in 2021. Instead, the Trinidad borders remain closed (for good reason), and the best we can do is listen to new soca music, wine in our abodes and relive the precious memories. I’m happy to start this carnival tabanca series off in Trinidad, with Ron...the man behind one of the most notable carnival groups on the Caribbean scene.Covered in this episode:Tips for traveling to St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands 1:08Tips for traveling to Aruba 05:27Sha’s Trinidad Carnival virgin story 09:45All about Limin’ Professionals: The Syndicate (LPTS) with Ron 14:41The highs and lows of planning a carnival tour group 32:45Ron’s top three Trinidad carnival fetes 39:00Tips for Trinidad carnival newbies 44:38Sha’s 5 ways to conquer Trinidad carnival 01:02:12If you’re ready to do a deep dive into my T&T adventures, HERE you will find every Trinidad-related piece I have ever created. The 7 commandments of foolishness teaching series is borne out of a desire to push people more towards wisdom principle, with the thinking that if we are aware and turn our hearts against foolishness, perhaps we can move in the direction of wisdom. This brings us to the question, What does it take to be foolish? Proverbs 9:1-12 emphasizes the importance of wisdom in our daily living, telling us about wisdom's invitation to everyone to eat of her food, drink of her wine, and receive life in the process. “11Wisdom will multiply your days and add years to your life. 12If you will become wise, you will be the one to benefit. If you scorn wisdom, you will be the one to suffer.” Let us look at some perspectives of wisdom, thereafter we will go onto discussing the first commandment of foolishness. Proverbs chapter 4 and verse 7 says that getting wisdom is the most important thing. There is a premium placed on wisdom throughout the bible and its importance in our lives cannot be over-emphasized, considering that there is the foolish and the wise way of doing everything; there is the foolish way of handling a marriage and there is the wise way of handling it; there is the foolish way of working on an official task and there is the wise way; there is the foolish way of approaching your academics and there is the wise way… The list is endless
"By the Grace of God" By Pastor Missy Jenson 2 Corinthians 4:5-18 The Message (MSG) 5-6Remember, our Message is not about ourselves; we're proclaiming Jesus Christ, the Master. All we are is messengers, errand runners from Jesus for you. It started when God said, "Light up the darkness!" and our lives filled up with light as we saw and understood God in the face of Christ, all bright and beautiful. 7-12If you only look at us, you might well miss the brightness. We carry this precious Message around in the unadorned clay pots of our ordinary lives. That's to prevent anyone from confusing God's incomparable power with us. As it is, there's not much chance of that. You know for yourselves that we're not much to look at. We've been surrounded and battered by troubles, but we're not demoralized; we're not sure what to do, but we know that God knows what to do; we've been spiritually terrorized, but God hasn't left our side; we've been thrown down, but we haven't broken. What they did to Jesus, they do to us—trial and torture, mockery and murder; what Jesus did among them, he does in us—he lives! Our lives are at constant risk for Jesus' sake, which makes Jesus' life all the more evident in us. While we're going through the worst, you're getting in on the best! 13-15We're not keeping this quiet, not on your life. Just like the psalmist who wrote, "I believed it, so I said it," we say what we believe. And what we believe is that the One who raised up the Master Jesus will just as certainly raise us up with you, alive. Every detail works to your advantage and to God's glory: more and more grace, more and more people, more and more praise! 16-18So we're not giving up. How could we! Even though on the outside it often looks like things are falling apart on us, on the inside, where God is making new life, not a day goes by without his unfolding grace. These hard times are small potatoes compared to the coming good times, the lavish celebration prepared for us. There's far more here than meets the eye. The things we see now are here today, gone tomorrow. But the things we can't see now will last forever. The Message (MSG) Copyright © 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 2000, 2001, 2002 by Eugene H. Peterson
