6What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin that grace may abound?2By no means! How canwe who died to sin still live in it?3Do you not know that all of uswho have been baptizedinto Christ Jesus were baptized into his death?4We wereburied therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just asChrist was raised from the dead bythe glory of the Father, we too might walk innewness of life. 5Forif we have been united with him ina death like his, we shall certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his.6We know thatour old self[a]was crucified with him in order thatthe body of sin might be brought to nothing, so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin.7Forone who has diedhas been set free[b]from sin.

Sixth Sunday of Easter The Collect: O God, you have prepared for those who love you such good things as surpass our understanding: Pour into our hearts such love towards you, that we, loving you in all things and above all things, may obtain your promises, which exceed all that we can desire; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. First Lesson: Acts 10:44-48 44While Peter was still speaking, the Holy Spirit fell upon all who heard the word. 45The circumcised believers who had come with Peter were astounded that the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out even on the Gentiles, 46for they heard them speaking in tongues and extolling God. Then Peter said, 47“Can anyone withhold the water for baptizing these people who have received the Holy Spirit just as we have?” 48So he ordered them to be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Then they invited him to stay for several days. Psalm: Psalm 98 1 Sing to the Lord a new song, *        for he has done marvelous things. 2 With his right hand and his holy arm *        has he won for himself the victory. 3 The Lord has made known his victory; *        his righteousness has he openly shown in the sight of the nations. 4 He remembers his mercy and faithfulness to the house of Israel, *        and all the ends of the earth have seen the victory of our God. 5 Shout with joy to the Lord, all you lands; *        lift up your voice, rejoice, and sing. 6 Sing to the Lord with the harp, *        with the harp and the voice of song. 7 With trumpets and the sound of the horn *        shout with joy before the King, the Lord. 8 Let the sea make a noise and all that is in it, *        the lands and those who dwell therein. 9 Let the rivers clap their hands, *        and let the hills ring out with joy before the Lord,        when he comes to judge the earth. 10 In righteousness shall he judge the world *        and the peoples with equity. Epistle: 1 John 5:1-6 1Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ has been born of God, and everyone who loves the parent loves the child. 2By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and obey his commandments. 3For the love of God is this, that we obey his commandments. And his commandments are not burdensome, 4for whatever is born of God conquers the world. And this is the victory that conquers the world, our faith. 5Who is it that conquers the world but the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God? 6This is the one who came by water and blood, Jesus Christ, not with the water only but with the water and the blood. And the Spirit is the one that testifies, for the Spirit is the truth. Gospel: John 15:9-17 9As the Father has loved me, so I have loved you; abide in my love. 10If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father's commandments and abide in his love. 11I have said these things to you so that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be complete. 12“This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. 13No one has greater love than this, to lay down one's life for one's friends. 14You are my friends if you do what I command you.15I do not call you servants any longer, because the servant does not know what the master is doing; but I have called you friends, because I have made known to you everything that I have heard from my Father.16You did not choose me but I chose you. And I appointed you to go and bear fruit, fruit that will last, so that the Father will give you whatever you ask him in my name. 17I am giving you these commands so that you may love one another.

Hey Jude Part One: A Balanced Gospel By Louie Marsh, 2-20-2022   Intro – Who's Jude?   “1Jude, a servant of Jesus Christ and a brother of James, To those who have been called, who are loved by God the Father and kept by Jesus Christ: 2Mercy, peace and love be yours in abundance.” (Jude 1–2, NIV84)   Jude was the brother of James (probably “James the Lord's brother,” Gal. 1:19). He likely wrote sometime between a.d. 65 and 80. Tradition states that Jude, along with Simon the Zealot, was beaten to death and then beheaded in Persia sometime in the first century. The precise date is not known, estimates range from 65-80 AD.    1) I need a HEALTHY approach to sharing the Gospel.   “3Beloved, although I was very eager to write to you about our common salvation… (Jude 3, ESV)   But I can't IGNORE   …I found it necessary to write appealing to you to contend for the faith that was once for all delivered to the saints.”  (Jude 3, ESV)   2) I must OPPOSE those who pervert God's grace.   “4For certain people have crept in unnoticed who long ago were designated for this condemnation, ungodly people, who pervert the grace of our God into sensuality and deny our only Master and Lord, Jesus Christ.” (Jude 4, ESV)   3) BEWARE of the two ways God's grace is perverted.   Sensuality = license – antinomianism    “1What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin that grace may abound? 2By no means! How can we who died to sin still live in it?” (Romans 6:1–2, ESV)   Sensuality = moralism - legalism   “23Such regulations indeed have an appearance of wisdom, with their self-imposed worship, their false humility and their harsh treatment of the body, but they lack any value in restraining sensual indulgence.” (Colossians 2:23, NIV84)   4) Everyone will eventually be held ACCOUNTABLE.   “5Now I want to remind you, although you once fully knew it, that Jesus, who saved a people out of the land of Egypt, afterward destroyed those who did not believe. 6And the angels who did not stay within their own position of authority, but left their proper dwelling, he has kept in eternal chains under gloomy darkness until the judgment of the great day— 7just as Sodom and Gomorrah and the surrounding cities, which likewise indulged in sexual immorality and pursued unnatural desire, serve as an example by undergoing a punishment of eternal fire.” (Jude 5–7, ESV)   5) Always treat those who oppose you with RESPECT.   “8Yet in like manner these people also, relying on their dreams, defile the flesh, reject authority, and blaspheme the glorious ones. 9But when the archangel Michael, contending with the devil, was disputing about the body of Moses, he did not presume to pronounce a blasphemous judgment, but said, “The Lord rebuke you.”” (Jude 8–9, ESV)   6) Sin eventually leads us against REASON.   “10But these people blaspheme all that they do not understand, and they are destroyed by all that they, like unreasoning animals, understand instinctively. 11Woe to them!... (Jude 10–11a, ESV)   “15But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect,” (1 Peter 3:15, NIV84)   That is the pathway to   11Woe to them! For they walked in the way of Cain and abandoned themselves for the sake of gain to Balaam's error and perished in Korah's rebellion.” (Jude 11, ESV)   Cain – Murderer – Genesis 4:8 Balaam – rebelled against God (Numbers 22) Korah – (Numbers 16:3)   Christ is the way to   “5Thomas said to him, “Lord, we don't know where you are going, so how can we know the way?” 6Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. 7If you really knew me, you would know my Father as well. From now on, you do know him and have seen him.”” (John 14:5–7, NIV84)

Life As It Was Meant To Be Part 8: Letting God Finish the Work Louie Marsh, 8-1-2021   Intro -  pictures of unfinished buildings -  story of house in Mom & Dad's neighborhood.   “23Now may the God of peace himself sanctify you completely, and may your whole spirit and soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. 24He who calls you is faithful; he will surely do it.” (1 Thessalonians 5:23–24, ESV)   I Must Develop the Proper Perspective on…   My PROBLEMS   “14 … What is your life? For you are a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes.” (James 4:14b, ESV)   My ACHIEVEMENTS   “5I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.” (John 15:5, ESV)   My HEART   "The human heart is most deceitful and desperately wicked. Who really knows how bad it is? Jeremiah 17:9 (NLT)   The TRUTH   “32and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”” (John 8:32, ESV)   Jesus said, "I am the Road, also the Truth, also the Life. No one gets to the Father apart from me. John 14:6 (Mes)   Martin Luther – wrote this about the Peasants Revolt, in the tract, “Against the Murderous and Thieving Hordes of Peasants.”   Picture of Luther's Tract   If the peasant is in open rebellion then he is outside the law of God…Therefore let everyone who can, smite, slay, and stab, secretly or openly, remembering that nothing can be more poisonous, hurtful or devilish than a rebel… Therefore dear sirs, fire here, save there, stab, smite, strangle them, whoever can. If your death result, very well, you can never attain to a more blessed death.”   My RELATIONSHIPS   “10Love one another with brotherly affection. Outdo one another in showing honor.” (Romans 12:10, ESV)   “5he predestined us for adoption to himself as sons through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of his will,” (Ephesians 1:5, ESV)   “12But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God, 13who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.” (John 1:12–13, ESV)   I Allow God to Finish the Work When I…   “23Now may the God of peace himself sanctify you completely, and may your whole spirit and soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. 24He who calls you is faithful; he will surely do it.” (1 Thessalonians 5:23–24, ESV)   1) Understand God's goal for my life – CHRIST-LIKENESS.   2) Let God give me His PEACE.   3) Find SPIRITUAL WHOLENESS in Christ!   “24God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.”” (John 4:24, ESV)   4) Let Christ bring wholeness to my SOUL!   My soul is my –   MIND   “20Brothers, do not be children in your thinking. Be infants in evil, but in your thinking be mature.” (1 Corinthians 14:20, ESV)   WILL   “24Then Jesus told his disciples, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.” (Matthew 16:24, ESV)   EMOTIONS   “16My inmost being will exult when your lips speak what is right.” (Proverbs 23:16, ESV)   5) Realize this – God wants my BODY!!   “19Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own,” (1 Corinthians 6:19, ESV)   “2By this you know the Spirit of God: every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God,” (1 John 4:2, ESV)

The Gospel of John 1-7: Part 8: Judge Like Jesus Judges By Louie Marsh, 6-6-2021     1) Judge PROPERLY   Not SUPERFICIALLY   “24Do not judge by appearances… (John 7:24a, ESV)   Appearance (ὄψιν). Primarily, seeing or sight. In 11:44; Apoc. 1:16, face, and hence external appearance. The word occurs only in the three passages cited.   “1“Judge not, that you be not judged.” (Matthew 7:1, ESV)   Use a TRUE STANDARD of judgement.   …but judge with right judgment.”” (John 7:24b, ESV)   . 2For with the judgment you pronounce you will be judged, and with the measure you use it will be measured to you. (Matthew 7:2, ESV)   EXAMINE yourself first, then others   3Why do you see the speck that is in your brother's eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye? (Matthew 7:3, ESV)   APPLY it to yourself before giving others advice or criticism   4Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,' when there is the log in your own eye? (Matthew 7:4, ESV)   2) To do otherwise is HYPOCRISY   5You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother's eye. (Matthew 7:5, ESV)   Without judgement there is no…   TRUTH “57“And why do you not judge for yourselves what is right? 58As you go with your accuser before the magistrate, make an effort to settle with him on the way, lest he drag you to the judge, and the judge hand you over to the officer, and the officer put you in prison.” (Luke 12:57–58, ESV)   JUSTICE   “15“You shall do no injustice in court. You shall not be partial to the poor or defer to the great, but in righteousness shall you judge your neighbor.” (Leviticus 19:15, ESV)   PEACE   “13May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope.” (Romans 15:13, ESV)   ASSURANCE   “12Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life. 13I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life.” (1 John 5:12–13, ESV)   3) To follow Jesus you must JUDGE.   Otherwise I can't DISCERN good from evil.   6“Do not give dogs what is holy, and do not throw your pearls before pigs, lest they trample them underfoot and turn to attack you.” (Matthew 7:6, ESV)   I can't OBEY Scripture without proper judgement.   “1Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, for many false prophets have gone out into the world. 2By this you know the Spirit of God: every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God,” (1 John 4:1–2, ESV)

He is plenty smart to take care of us. We should therefore rely on his wisdom, not our own. Many Christians identify Wisdom in Proverbs 8 with Christ. He is our wisdom (1 Cor 1:30), and through him God created the world (Col 1:15).To become disciplined people, it will be enormously beneficial to watch at wisd0m's door daily.Bonus material: Many Proverbs are suited to instructing leaders, especially leaders of nations, beginning in this very chapter. When you read tomorrow's news, appreciate how accurately the Lord has the political pulse. Another biblical book with keen insight into the dynamics of politics is Ecclesiastes. Here is my selection from Proverbs:By me [the fear of the Lord ] kings reign, and rulers decree what is just -- 8:15By me princes rule, and nobles, all who govern justly -- 8:16Where there is no guidance, a people falls, but in an abundance of counselors there is safety -- 11:14In a multitude of people is the glory of a king, but without people a prince is ruined -- 14:2Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a reproach to any people -- 14:34It is an abomination to kings to do evil, for the throne is established by righteousness -- 16:12 (see vv.10-13)The horse is made ready for the day of battle, but the victory belongs to the LORD -- 21:3Whoever oppresses the poor to increase his own wealth, or gives to the rich, will only come to poverty -- 22:16Take away the dross from the silver, and the smith has material for a vessel -- 25:4Take away the wicked from the presence of the king, and his throne will be established in righteousness -- 25:5When a land transgresses, it has many rulers, but with a man of understanding and knowledge, its stability will long continue -- 28:2When the righteous triumph, there is great glory, but when the wicked rise, people hide themselves -- 28:12Like a roaring lion or a charging bear is a wicked ruler over a poor people -- 28:15A ruler who lacks understanding is a cruel oppressor, but he who hates unjust gain will prolong his days -- 28:16When the wicked rise, people hide themselves, but when they perish, the righteous increase -- 28:28When the righteous increase, the people rejoice, but when the wicked rule, the people groan -- 29:2By justice a king builds up the land, but he who exacts gifts tears it down -- 29:4If a ruler listens to falsehood, all his officials will be wicked -- 29:12If a king faithfully judges the poor, his throne will be established forever -- 29:14It is not for kings, O Lemuel, it is not for kings to drink wine, or for rulers to take strong drink -- 31:4Lest they drink and forget what has been decreed and pervert the rights of all the afflicted -- 31:5Challenge for the day:Make time to watch daily at wisdom's door."The vigour of our spiritual life will be in exact proportion to the place held by the Bible in our life and thoughts." – George MuellerNext time: Proverbs 9.

Disciple Up # 201 Christian Skepticism By Louie Marsh, 3-3-2021   Intro. Where this came from – the forbidden episode??   This episode came from two Mike Rowe posts on his FaceBook page and a lot of things that have been rattling around in my head from nearly day one.   Because let's face it – Hello my name is Louie and I'm a skeptic, and I don't think I'll ever recover or want too!   Define the Term:   skepticism noun skep·ti·cism | ˈskep-tə-ˌsi-zəm  Definition of skepticism 1: an attitude of doubt or a disposition to incredulity either in general or toward a particular object 2a: the doctrine that true knowledge or knowledge in a particular area is uncertain b: the method of suspended judgment, systematic doubt, or criticism characteristic of skeptics 3: doubt concerning basic religious principles (such as immortality, providence, and revelation)   Basic Premise: We All Need to Be Christian Skeptics!   “…certainty and truth have nothing to do with each other, and credibility is a very fragile thing.” – Mike Rowe   “16“Behold, I am sending you out as sheep in the midst of wolves, so be wise as serpents and innocent as doves. 17Beware of men, for they will deliver you over to courts and flog you in their synagogues, 18and you will be dragged before governors and kings for my sake, to bear witness before them and the Gentiles. 19When they deliver you over, do not be anxious how you are to speak or what you are to say, for what you are to say will be given to you in that hour.” (Matthew 10:16–19, ESV)   “24But Jesus on his part did not entrust himself to them, because he knew all people” (John 2:24, ESV)   “20Do not despise prophecies, 21but test everything; hold fast what is good. 22Abstain from every form of evil.” (1 Thessalonians 5:20–22, ESV)   “1Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, for many false prophets have gone out into the world. 2By this you know the Spirit of God: every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God, 3and every spirit that does not confess Jesus is not from God. This is the spirit of the antichrist, which you heard was coming and now is in the world already.” (1 John 4:1–3, ESV)   “10The brothers immediately sent Paul and Silas away by night to Berea, and when they arrived they went into the Jewish synagogue. 11Now these Jews were more noble than those in Thessalonica; they received the word with all eagerness, examining the Scriptures daily to see if these things were so.” (Acts 17:10–11, ESV)   Links In This Episode:   https://www.facebook.com/TheRealMikeRowe   His February 26th and March 2nd posts.

The Systemic method means that the golf swing is a sum of all its parts that need to work in cooperation. Breaking down those parts, the Analytical approach, is taking all the nuanced elements, similar to getting one tip from YouTube, another from a magazine, then adding something else from a buddy, is counter productive and could do more harm than good. James originally joined us in 2007 to discuss his book “Golf’s Three Noble Truths”. That episode can be heard on Golf Smarter Mulligans, episode 30. Our Resurrection Hope “We have always held to the hope, the belief, the conviction that there is a better life, a better world beyond the horizon.” – Franklin D. Rooseveld 1 Peter 1:3 – Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. In His great mercy He has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead Because Jesus is alive – Hope is alive Neil Strait – “Take from a man his wealth and you hinder him. Take from him his purpose and you slow him down. But take from man his hope and you stop him.” Definition of Hope: A confident expectation and desire from a particular thing to happen for the good True story of the S4 Submarine was rammed by another ship, it sunk quickly. Divers rushed to the scene. A diver recalls a Morse code being tapped loud – Is…there…any…Hope. Can I assure you today, there is hope. Whatever your situation. Not because I say so but God said so, because of the resurrection of Jesus. We have hope for this life and the life to come. Living or dying – “The best is yet to come.” We are encouraged and can have hope from. 1 Corinthians 15:1-28 (NIV)  The message of the resurrection (our sin problem has been handled) 1 Corinthians 15:1-4 (NIV) – Now brothers I want to remind you of the gospel I preached to you, which you received and on which you have taken your stand. 2By this gospel you are saved, if you hold firmly to the word, I preached to you. Otherwise, you have believed in vain. 3For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures, 4that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the scriptures. The very fact that we talk about the resurrection of Jesus Implies that He must have died. In-turn: Death reminds us of the serious consequences of sin Why did Jesus have to die for our sins? Because sin brings death. Romans 6:23 – “For the wages of sin is death” Romans 3:23 – “All have sinned and fallen short of the Glory of God.” What awesome hope for all of humanity. John 3:16 – “God loved the world in this way: He gave up His one and only son so that anyone who believes in Him will not die in their sins and face a terrible judgment but will have a life of freedom and victory that goes on forever even after our physical death.” God has made it possible for us to live a hope filled life. The source of all hope is the Love of God. 2 Thessalonians 2:16-17 – “Now may our Lord Jesus Christ Himself and God our Father who has loved us and given us eternal comfort and good hope by grace, comfort and strengthen your hearts in every good work and word.” We have received this hope by God’s grace. John says it this way: 1 John 3:1-3 (NIV) – Behold what manner of love the Father has bestowed on us that we should be called children of God! Therefore the world does not know us because it did not know Him. 2Beloved now we are children of God and it has not yet been revealed what we shall be, but we know that when He is revealed we shall be like Him for we shall be like Him for we shall see Him as He is. 3And everyone who has this hope in Him purifies himself just as He is pure. When we have received this resurrection hope by grace We have a hope filled life to live Our response as believers to God’s great salvation 1 Peter 1:13 – Therefore prepare your minds for action, be self-controlled set your hope fully on the grace to be given you when Jesus is revealed How has this resurrection hope touched your life Let’s be honest: Hopeless people are weak, they don’t have any real motivation When things get tough, they give up But people who have this kind of eternal hope who I’m talking about have: Strength and courage In hardships and trouble they persevere and endure They hold fast Because their hope is in the Risen Christ May you live the resurrection Hope life boldly. Amen

God is Love — 1 John 4:7-5:5 7Beloved, let us love one another, for love is of God; and everyone who loves is born of God and knows God. 8He who does not love does not know God, for God is love. 9In this the love of God was manifested toward us, that God has sent His only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through Him. 10In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins. 11Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. 12No one has seen God at any time. If we love one another, God abides in us, and His love has been perfected in us. 13By this we know that we abide in Him, and He in us, because He has given us of His Spirit. 14And we have seen and testify that the Father has sent the Son as Savior of the world. 15Whoever confesses that Jesus is the Son of God, God abides in him, and he in God. 16And we have known and believed the love that God has for us. God is love, and he who abides in love abides in God, and God in him. 17Love has been perfected among us in this: that we may have boldness in the day of judgment; because as He is, so are we in this world. 18There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves torment. But he who fears has not been made perfect in love. 19We love Him because He first loved us. 20If someone says, “I love God,” and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who does not love his brother whom he has seen, how can he love God whom he has not seen? 21And this commandment we have from Him: that he who loves God must love his brother also. 1Whoever believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God, and everyone who loves Him who begot also loves him who is begotten of Him. 2By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and keep His commandments. 3For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments. And His commandments are not burdensome. 4For whatever is born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world— our faith. 5Who is he who overcomes the world, but he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God? I. When Strivings Cease Believer’s Birthright i) Peace Romans 5:1 Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. Philippians 4:7 And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. ii) Joy Romans 5 2By whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God. 11And not only so, but we also joy in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom we have now received the atonement. Groaning Romans 8:26 Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. iv) Leading Romans 8:14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.

The Power of the Gospel Part 3: He Condemned Sin All over the world this gospel is bearing fruit and growing, just as it has been doing among you. (Colossians 1:6) Romans 8:1-4 v. 1 Those of us who are in Christ are no longer under any condemnation. v. 2 The power of the Spirit overcame the power of sin and death over me, through Christ Jesus. v. 3 God condemned sin in sinful man. How could God condemn sin in the flesh of Jesus Christ? There was no sin in Jesus Christ to condemn. So the question is: Whose sin was condemned when Jesus' flesh was tortured and killed? God condemned sin in the flesh of his completely innocent Son. What sin? Whose sin? 2 Corinthians 5:21, "[God] made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him." It was my sin and your sin that was condemned in Jesus Christ. He was innocent. He committed no sin. He deserved no punishment. But he took on the punishment of your sin and my sin once and for all that that we should never bear it. My sin, oh, the bliss of this glorious thought! My sin, not in part but the whole, Is nailed to the cross, and I bear it no more, Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, O my soul! Sin Has Been Condemned, not Merely Shown to Be Condemnable What does it mean that God condemned sin? Did he criticize sin? Like when a political figure condemns and act of terrorism? No, God did something more than the law could do. The law criticized and called sin condemnable. He means that in Jesus' flesh – in his suffering and dying body on the cross – God executed a final sentence of condemnation on the sin of everyone who is in Christ. "God condemned sin" means God found sin guilty and sentenced sin to be finally punished and carried out the penalty of suffering in the death of his Son. The death of Jesus Christ takes away all my condemnation. Because when he died God was condemning sin, sentencing it, and punishing it completely and fully and finally for all who are in Christ by faith. It was my sin that was being condemned and sentenced and punished when Christ died. And if my sin was punished there finally and fully, I will not be punished for it again. The punishment for our sins was carried out on Jesus Christ. This is why, for us who believe in Him, that we find sin so appalling. 1 John 3:9 9No one who is born of God will continue to sin, because God's seed remains in him; he cannot go on sinning, because he has been born of God. Romans 6:1-2 1What shall we say, then? Shall we go on sinning so that grace may increase? 2By no means! We died to sin; how can we live in it any longer? Sin is what was killing us. It is what killed Jesus. How can we live in it anymore? As a believer, I want to live my life that honors Jesus’ sacrifice. I don’t want to treat His sacrifice as if it doesn’t matter. He died to set me free from sin. Romans 6:15-18 15What then? Shall we sin because we are not under law but under grace? By no means! 16Don't you know that when you offer yourselves to someone to obey him as slaves, you are slaves to the one whom you obey—whether you are slaves to sin, which leads to death, or to obedience, which leads to righteousness? 17But thanks be to God that, though you used to be slaves to sin, you wholeheartedly obeyed the form of teaching to which you were entrusted. 18You have been set free from sin and have become slaves to righteousness. We were slaves to sin. Jesus death broke sin’s claim over my life. I have been set free from sin’s grip on me. I am no longer its slave. I am now a slave to righteousness, to do what is right and honorable.
