In today's broadcast of Words of Grace, Pastor Ben Winslett continues our study through the Sermon on the Mount by examining Christ's words concerning the commandment, “Thou shalt not kill.” While many in Jesus' day limited this command to literal murder, Jesus revealed its deeper meaning—warning against unrighteous anger, insults, and heart-level contempt. We consider … Continue reading "A Deeper Understanding of the 6th Commandment"
In this solo episode, Blake continues The Chorus in the Chaos series on the Ten Commandments with an in-depth look at the Sixth Commandment: “You shall not murder” (Exodus 20:13). While seemingly straightforward, this command carries deep theological and cultural implications. Blake explores: The biblical definition of murder vs. killing Why human life is sacred—rooted in the Imago Dei Scriptural contexts for justified killing: self-defense, war, and capital punishment How anger, jealousy, and hatred are precursors to murder The broader implications for issues like abortion, euthanasia, and suicide The Christian duty to not only to avoid murder but actively preserve life Jesus' teaching in Matthew 5 on heart sins and loving our enemies For a limited time, The Chorus in the Chaos listeners get 10% off their first purchase at Reformation Heritage Books! The second reason for this command is that God's people are to reflect His heart and character. They are to be a holy people, set-apart for God's purposes, and this includes our sexual purity. God does not want His people to just emulate what they see happening in the world. We live in a hyper-sexualized culture that often reduces a person's body to a mere sex object. We are not only to honor, care for, and respect our own bodies we are also to honor, care for, and respect the bodies of all people. The way we view and treat others directly relates to our relationship with God and that is the Heart of the Matter.
God's reason for giving this command is because of how important marriage is in the heart of God. God created marriage between one man and one woman and was the building block of His creation and of society. Even after the fall marriage is a sacred union in the way the man and woman complement one another and bring new life into the world through their marriage. With such a premium placed on marriage, it is no wonder that God would seek to protect this union from being defiled which is what adultery is and that is really the Heart of the Matter.

Send us a textUnderstanding the Sixth Commandment with Reverend Ben Cooper and Simon Pinchbeck – Anger, Forgiveness, and Spiritual GrowthIn this enlightening episode of our series on the Ten Commandments, Reverend Ben Cooper and Simon Pinchbeck dive deep into the Sixth Commandment—“Thou shalt not kill”—exploring its broader meaning in the context of anger, forgiveness, and spiritual peace. While it prohibits physical murder, this commandment challenges us to reflect on the internal battles with hatred, resentment, and the power of words that can harm the soul. The Sixth Commandment: More Than Just Physical MurderThe Sixth Commandment addresses the heart of violence, not just in the form of physical murder but also in our thoughts, attitudes, and words. We explore how anger management in Christianity can help believers overcome personal struggles and create lasting peace.Words That Heal or Harm: Biblical Forgiveness and Its PowerIn line with the Sixth Commandment, we explore the significance of words in the Bible. Words hold great power to either heal or harm, making forgiveness a central theme of this conversation. The Bible teaches that forgiveness is essential for spiritual health and peace (Matthew 6:14-15). Reverend Ben and Simon reflect on the importance of embracing biblical forgiveness and choosing peace, even in challenging circumstances.Practical forgiveness is emphasized as a way to live out the Sixth Commandment, helping us to overcome anger and cultivate a life of love and peace.Living the Sixth Commandment Today: A Call to Spiritual GrowthThe Sixth Commandment calls us to more than just external compliance—it's a call to align our hearts with God's moral law. We discuss how to apply biblical teachings on forgiveness and anger in our daily lives, both in our relationships and in the broader Christian community. Whether navigating personal conflict or grappling with societal unrest, the Sixth Commandment provides a foundation for living in peace and reconciliation.Practical Insights and Key TakeawaysAnger in the Bible is not just about emotions—it's a call to action for Christians to seek reconciliation. The Sixth Commandment is a guide for overcoming the destructive power of anger and choosing forgiveness.Embracing biblical forgiveness leads to spiritual healing and peace in our relationships and communities.Support the showhttps://www.pastorbencooper.co.uk/

A new MP3 sermon from The New Testament Baptist Church is now available on SermonAudio with the following details: Title: The 6th Commandment Subtitle: The Ten Commandments Speaker: Paul A. Tiber Broadcaster: The New Testament Baptist Church Event: Sunday - AM Date: 10/4/1992 Length: 41 min.
Israel was given a very clear instruction: Do not take the life of another human. They got very caught up in the physical aspect, and Jesus came to show us that it is not enough to simply stay your hand from physically stealing a life. Your thoughts, words, actions and inactions either contribute to the flourishing and growth towards Jesus of someone, or they leave them marching towards death. Who are we letting die to sin because of our biases? Because of our need to feel better than someone? Group Life Questions:1. Which passage of Scripture from today's sermon stuck with you?- Matthew 19:1-12- Isaiah 59:15-21- Matthew 5:21-26- Matthew 25:31-46- Matthew 18:21-35- Matthew 5:43-48- Romans 12:9-212. What arguments or justifications have you heard for Old Testament violence, if any?3. Does Jesus' vision of the Kingdom of God have room for violence at all?4. Have you ever been "left for dead", where it feels as though a choice you made was the last straw for someone? Have you ever felt that way towards someone and their decisions?5. Who have you stopped praying for to find life? Who do you need to start praying for?

By Greg Thomas in Cleveland, OH - January 27, 2024 - This commandment against murder is based on having respect for God Himself. Only God is the Creator who has the right to give or take away life… especially of an innocent person. To do this act is taking upon yourself the authority and entitlement of God Himself.
"You shall not commit adultery." Caleb and Dr. Paulson talk about the importance of marriage, the place and purpose of sex, and how the family is the central matter at the heart of the six commandments. Paulson argues that the Sixth Commandment appears offensive as it assaults our modern sensibilities about sex and sexuality.
