Watch the Q&A session here: https://youtu.be/Et8_myknHq8Most of us rarely think about plant immunity. But, like us, plants can distinguish between different pathogens, trigger a ‘bespoke' immune response and retain a memory of past infections to boost future immunity. However, plant immune systems also exhibit enviable features like the ability to inherit immunological memory from a parent, or to warn distant individuals of an impending pathogen attack. This lecture investigates how they do all of this and more without a single white blood cell. This lecture was recorded by Robin May on 29th January 2025 at Barnard's Inn Hall, London.Robin is Gresham Professor of Physic. He is also Chief Scientific Adviser at the Food Standards Agency (FSA) and Professor of Infectious Disease at the University of Birmingham. The transcript of the lecture is available from the Gresham College website: https://www.gresham.ac.uk/watch-now/green-immunityGresham College has offered free public lectures for over 400 years, thanks to the generosity of our supporters.

Bild: Mesmerimsterapi. Watch the Q&A session here:  https://youtu.be/wiAFxEnq8t4Gresham College has been delivering public lectures since 1597 through times of great social, political and technological change. Its commitment to deliver lectures for free to the general public has led to intermittent financial challenges to its generous sponsors. The arrival of the internet, mobile devices and social media have offered both opportunity and further challenge. In an era supposedly characterised by shorter attention spans, and greater competition for that attention, what space is left for the public lecture and what is its purpose? Why do people still want to deliver them? What makes a great lecture? What is the relative importance of an in-person v an online audience? Is audience size an indication of the value of lecture content? Can the public lecture survive? This lecture will address these and other questions from a personal, but hopefully informed, perspective. This lecture was recorded by Martin Elliott  on 16th October 2024 at Barnard's Inn Hall, LondonMartin Elliott MD FRCS is Provost of Gresham College. He is also Professor Emeritus of Cardiothoracic Surgery at UCL & Professor Emeritus of Physic at Gresham College. Part 1 of Episode 150! Yay!! And now for something completely different. This episode is a bit of a departure from our regular show. We invite Alex Criddle and Cody Noconi, researchers into the psychedelic origins of Mormonism, to respond to the recent debate on the Mormon Book Reviews channel between ourselves and Mormon apologist, Brian Hales. Brian attempts to provide the apologetic response to the theory that Joseph Smith utilized psychedelics (entheogens) in the early history of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in order to facilitate visionary experiences for the early Saints. Disinformation requires much greater effort than simply stating information so we do our best to debunk his debunking (rebunk the theory?). This one is a long haul so we split it into 2 episodes to make it a little more digestible.   Show notes: Video version: https://youtu.be/3l0L1EHtQOo Support our research and outreach: https://www.patreon.com/SeerStonedProductions Original here: Psychedelics & Early Mormonism Theory Brian Hales Responds on Mormon Book Reviews https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uE7J0y_cPpg Further information: “The Higher Powers of Man” - Frederick M. Smith was a prophet of the RLDS Mormons and paternal grandson of the founder Joseph Smith. In 1918 Frederick published this Ph.D. dissertation breaking down altered states of consciousness from an early psychologist's perspective, specifically, religious states of ‘ecstacy' as he called it. A lengthy chapter devoted to peyote is particularly worth reading. “The Higher Powers: Fred M - Smith and the Peyote Ceremonies” - Shelby Barnes' 1995 paper highlighting the curious psychedelic interests of Frederick M. Smith. While Barnes does not make any direct connections to Joseph Smith and psychedelics, Barnes does note that Frederick's interests were an attempt to find the reliable keys to visionary revelation that his grandfather Joseph had demonstrated. “Restoration and the Sacred Mushroom”  - Dr. Robert Beckstead's seminal research paper presented at the August 2007 Sunstone Symposium. Beckstead's paper was the first to propose the possibility that Joseph Smith used psychedelics to facilitate visionary experiences. “A 1920's Harvard Psychedelic Circle with a Mormon Connection: Peyote Use amongst the Harvard Aesthetes” Alan Piper's 2016 paper highlighting Frederick M. Smith's interest in psychedelics, and how as a standing Mormon prophet Fred was funding a 1920s group of Harvard students with peyote. “Revelation Through Hallucination: A discourse on the Joseph Smith-entheogen theory” - Bryce Blankenagel and Cody Noconi's 2017 follow-up paper further explores the hypothesis originally put forward by Dr. Robert Beckstead a decade earlier. “The Entheogenic Origins of Mormonism: A Working Hypothesis” - Dr. Robert Beckstead, Bryce Blankenagel, Cody Noconi, and Michael Winkelman's paper published in the Journal of Psychedelic Studies in June 2019. This was the first paper on the subject published in an academic journal. “Visions, Mushrooms, Fungi, Cacti, and Toads: Joseph Smith's Reported Use of Entheogens” Brian Hales' 2020 response paper to the one published in the Journal of Psychedelic Studies. As a believing Mormon engaged in academic apologetics, Hales details what he perceives to be holes in the proposed hypothesis. “The Psychedelic History of Mormonism, Magic, and Drugs” - Cody Noconi's book published in 2021. “Psychedelics as a Means of Revelation in Early and Contemporary Mormonism (Part 1)” Alex Criddle's 2023 paper that was originally presented at the Forms of Psychedelic Life conference at UC Berkeley (April 14-15, 2023). “Psychedelics as a Means of Revelation in Early and Contemporary Mormonism (Part 2)” A continuation of Alex Criddle's 2023 paper. “A Real Spiritual High: In Defense of Psychedelic Mysticism” An enlightening philosophical essay from Alex Criddle. Ep 150.2 — Psychedelics in Early Mormonism; Debunking a Mormon Apologist on Mormon Book Reviews pt. 2

Part 2 of Episode 150! Longevity is a hot topic these days. We're obsessed with anti-ageing as if getting older should be avoided or even reversed at all costs! Of course, we can't do that and I'm not sure we'd really want to. But today's guest brings valuable insights about what we can do, to make sure we age healthily and happily.Professor Rose Anne Kenny is a medical gerontologist, Regius Professor of Physic and Chair of Medical Gerontology at Trinity College Dublin. She's the Founding Principal Investigator of Ireland's largest population study of ageing (TILDA) and the author of the international bestseller Age Proof: The New Science of Living a Longer and Healthier Life.In today's conversation, Professor Kenny reveals that while 20 percent of ageing is genetic and can't be changed, 80 percent is epigenetic – in other words, we have the power to influence how quickly or how slowly we age.Her number one recommendation is to have good quality friendships and relationships throughout our lives. Then follow a healthy diet, plenty of exercise, and reduce stress. Nothing too surprising, perhaps. But what might surprise you is just how far reaching the effects of these relatively simple measures can be – and how much what you do in your 20s can impact your 80s.We talk about how to avoid metabolic syndrome and why it's important to know key biological markers throughout life. We discuss the benefits of community, family, volunteering and inter-generational friendships, and the undercurrent of ageism that prevails in society.Loneliness increased threefold during the pandemic, according to the TILDA study, and it's left some people feeling afraid to reconnect. Yet isolation is known to cause inflammation, suppress immunity and speed ageing.Professor Kenny believes we should flip convenience on its head when it comes to exercise. Instead of taking the easy option which means moving less, we should look at the ‘harder' options, such as taking the stairs or carrying heavy bags, as convenient ways to build activity and strength training into our lives. She also shares excellent advice on sex and intimacy, sleeping better, laughing more, and finding purpose all around you. This is a wonderful and practical conversation that is going to give you a variety of simple ways to play the long game when it comes to ageing. And the empowering message is that it's never too early or too late to start.Support the podcast and enjoy Ad-Free episodes. Try FREE for 7 days on Apple Podcasts https://apple.co/feelbetterlivemore. Hello Anybody reading this. This podcast is regarding some stories as reported in the Society of Physical Research (SPR) records for 1923. The SPR tended not to report on ghost type stories at this time which were considered old fashioned. World War 1 had ended in 1918 and this resulted in many unexplained stories. Here are a few as recorded in Proceedings and the Journal of the SPR in 1923.I would like to say that I am aware that there have been issues regarding sound quality of these podcasts and I am working on solutions for the start of Series 7 starting in early December 2023. Meanwhile, I intend to post one podcast on 15 November 2023 to end Series 6.In Series 7, I will finish the series on the Kray crime gang. I will not focus on the twins but on those characters in their gang. I also want to focus on cryptozoology  and other strange stories and of course obscure true crime.www.strangestoriesuk.gmail.com

Karen Bashford, known as The Manifesting Lady Karen is on a mission to stop abuse and trauma from being passed on to future generations.  At 50, Karen realised her parents had never told her they loved her or hugged her. It was normal as far as she was concerned, but it explained why she had attracted two abusive relationships.   You seek the kind of love you know. In Karen's case emotionally disconnected. Due to their dysfunctional relationship with their parents, both abusive partners were emotionally disconnected.  When she finally divorced her husband, Karen lacked confidence and was emotionally exhausted with no money or work. And had a life-threatening illness.  Her quest to understand why she had two abusive relationships, had lost her home twice, and experienced life-threatening diseases led her to seek answers. In finding the answers, Karen now uses her knowledge and wisdom as a Physic, Energy Healer, Hypnotherapist, and NLP Practitioner to help other women heal from chronic pain and disease. To manifest the life they love, using a proven system she wrote about in her book How To Be Imperfectly Perfect A Practical Spiritual Guide to Becoming YOU!         For more information about Karen: http://www.themanifestinglady.com www.facebook.com/KarenABashford Say yes to you: acknowledge you! | Facebook http://www.linkedin.com/in/karenbashford/ How to Be Imperfectly Perfect book --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/momentsofgrace/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/momentsofgrace/support

In this episode we talk about best practices for nervous system regulation from an energetic perspective. In particular, we talk about best practices for supporting people - adults or children - who are highly sensitive, empaths or psychics. Let's unpack the terms. A psychic is someone who sees, hears, senses and knows things without being told. A Physic has a connection with the other side which means departed loved ones, angels, guides, Source, etc. Highly Sensitive People is someone who has big feelings and big reactions to those feelings, sensitivity to external stimulation like fabrics, scents, tastes, textures, etc. The highly sensitive person might be overstimulated. The HSP might feel like an "old soul", feel like no one quite understands them, etc. An Empath is someone who not only senses and feels but experiences the feelings of people around them. Some empaths also feel and experience the physical symptoms of people around them. When Marianne Williamson stood on the presidential debate stage in 2020 and spoke about the “dark physic force” unleashed in America, she became an instant meme. But these days—with our epidemic of loneliness and addiction, rising crime and violence like the kind we just witnessed in Uvalde, Texas—can anyone deny the existence of this darkness? Long before others were willing to name the anti-human, anti-social sickness in our culture, Williamson was warning of it. She is one of the most beloved self-help authors in the world, having sold more than three million copies of her more than a dozen books.
