To mask, or not to mask? Last week the CDC made the big announcement that fully vaccinated Americans can go mask-less indoors. But almost immediately, questions were being raised.  And no one seems to know the correct answer (is there a  correct answer?)   What if live in a state that still mandates masks but go into a store like Target or Walmart that says I don't have to wear one?  And what about going back to work?  When it comes to vaccinations employers can legally require employees to get the COVID-19 vaccine, regardless of whether it's fully approved or emergency authorization, but they must provide justification for why it's necessary to do the job safely. For example, if you've been doing your job 100% remotely an employer can encourage you to get vaccinated but it's harder to justify requiring it than if you are in a job where you frequently interact with the public or are required to work in close quarters with other employees.  Alex tries to make sense of everything.

Ahhhh Spring. The perfect time to go outside (if you're fully vaccinated, without a mask!) and take in the flowers and trees in full bloom, listen to the birds singing and oh yeah: dodge some falling rocket debris ....  Depending on who you ask, there could be good reason to skip the whole fresh air thing and stay indoors this weekend.  According to a number of sources, including the Pentagon and Aerospace Corp, a section of a large Chinese rocket is falling back to Earth and is expected to crash sometime Saturday.   Exactly where no one is really sure -- Anywhere from the Indian Ocean to the Pacific near the Equator after passing over eastern US cities.  The orbit itself covers a swath of the planet from New Zealand to Newfoundland. There’s also a very real concern that debris could hit an airplane in the sky. The FAA is now working with NORAD to monitor the sky, saying  “Tactical decisions, if needed, will be made based on real-time information.” (translation: scientists won’t know where this rocket is going until just a few hours before it hits so they’ll have to think fast).  Meanwhile, China is downplaying the event saying that it's all just "hype" from the Western media and that the rocket is "thin skinned," and likely to burn up before it hits earth … wherever that might be.

Becoming the first crew blasted into space aboard a rocket booster and a crew capsule previously used on a spaceflight, NASA and SpaceX have successfully sent four astronauts from 3 countries into space.  The same Endeavor capsule sent two astronauts to the ISS in 2020.  Until they dock later this weekend at the ISS, they will have time to get some sleep and eat prepacked meals.  Also notable for this mission is the fact that the pilot is married to the pilot of the previous one: Megan McArthur's husband is fellow astronaut Bob Behnken, who was part of that historic first NASA-SpaceX mission last May. In a previous interview, Behnken said this time it's "her turn to focus on getting her mission accomplished" and his turn to watch their young son.  This was the third crew sent to space by SpaceX in 11 months after a 9 year break from sending humans to space from US soil.  SpaceX also nailed the rocket landing back on Earth.  This is all part of SpaceX’s plans for cheaper space flight by reusing many of the components.

The case against the 21 year old accused of opening fire inside of a Boulder, Colorado grocery store just got a whole lot bigger. On top of the 10 murder count Ahmad Alissa was already facing, now 43 more counts have been added including attempted murder for the other customers who were in the store that day and for the police who responded.  Prosecutors also today released new details on the case.  Officer Talley was killed seconds after entering the store.  Before he entered all of the civilians who died were already dead.  At least 115 people were in the store when the shooter started his attack.  The gunman is also accused of having illegal large capacity magazines.  A motive remains unclear for police.

As travel begins booming amid increased vaccinations, Florida has announced it is suing the federal government and CDC over the cruise no sail order.  Governor Ron DeSantis says he wants cruise ships to be allowed to sail immediately.  He also says you should be allowed to do so without being forced to show that you’ve been vaccinated.  Also today - This doesn’t happen very often, especially during a pandemic:  A new mainline airline launches in the US today.  Avelo Airlines is taking a page out of Southwest’s playbook and trying to be a low cost airline flying all Boeing 737’s with few fees.  Based out of Burbank, California the plan is to fly to mainly underserved, small, outdoor recreation destinations like Grand Junction, Colorado and Eugene, Oregon.  While the airlines have been struggling,  Avelo's founders -- who have worked at Allegiant and United -- say this is the perfect time to launch a new airline as domestic travel is coming back strong.  Tickets went on sale today for $19.  The airline begins flying it's 737’s at the end of the month.

Between lower COVID numbers and more vaccine flowing that Americans are feeling increasingly comfortable taking to the skies. The fast uptick in travel caused Delta, over the weekend, to run out of pilots leading to cancelled flights and the airline temporarily filling middle seats.  United Airlines is facing a similar problem, saying it needs to hire pilots again.  The TSA reported today over 6 million people went through airport checkpoints. It comes as doctors keep warning that Americans can't let their guards down yet and that all of this sudden travel without enough people vaccinated could mean a big increase in cases looming

The CDC says for the first time, 2 million vaccine doses are being put into arms each day.  Huge venues like Yankee Stadium are now going 24/7.  At the same time, alarm from health officials about rolling back restrictions is growing with more health leaders saying it’s too soon and that the gains that we’ve made could be lost before more are vaccinated.  In Texas,  Gov. Greg Abbott said people will continue to wear masks and take precautions despite the mandate there.  Atlanta is pleading with people not to come to town for the NBA All-Star game this weekend -- Georgia is in last place among U.S. states in the pace of vaccination.  Alabama, West Virginia, and Connecticut are all extending mask mandates saying they need more time to vaccinate more people.

ABC's Alex Stone Joined Andrew Rogers and Dan Cochell on KRDO's Afternoon News as a new coronavirus variant identified in South Africa has been found in the United States for the first time. South Carolina officials say two such cases have been diagnosed in the state. Viruses mutate constantly, and many variants of the coronavirus are circulating around the globe, but scientists are primarily concerned with three that appear to spread more easily. The CDC says there are at least 315 cases of the British COVID variant in the US, mostly in California and Florida. Its latest forecast also predicts as many as 514,000 US deaths by February 20.

Japan is publicly adamant it will stage the postponed Olympics this summer. But to pull it off, many believe the vaccination of its 127 million citizens is key. And what about the athletes? Will they get priority in their various countries?  What about athletes from the poorer nations that may not get vaccines in time? And what about spectators?  Leaders struck deals with three pharmaceutical makers -- Pfizer, AstraZeneca, and Moderna. But uncertainty is growing that a nation ranked among the world's lowest in vaccine confidence can pull off the massive undertaking in time for the Olympics in July.

In Alaska starting today it’s almost like coronavirus never happened.  Well, sort of.  Alaska becomes the first state to remove almost all COVID-19 restrictions.  Everything is lifted to pre-coronavirus life with some minor social distancing recommendations.  But still some businesses are not comfortable reopening and some cities, including Anchorage, are not going as far as the state is allowing.  That, and there’s a big worry about lost revenue from tourism and cruise ships that are no longer docking in Alaska. ABC's Alex Stone joins us live with more on this.
