Why Astronauts Never Wash Their Clothes

Bright Side

Astronauts have a pretty good reason for not washing their clothes – it's all about saving water! In space, every drop of water is precious, so they can't afford to waste it on laundry. Instead, they wear their clothes until they get too dirty or smelly, then simply discard them. These used clothes become part of the space junk orbiting Earth. To keep fresh, astronauts often wear multiple layers, sort of like a never-ending fashion show with undergarments. And when they're done with a piece of clothing, it's disposed of during reentry, where it burns up in the Earth's atmosphere.

Life is a journey of discovery. A rainbow of challenges stirring your heart, tantalizing your mind, engaging your body, and thrilling your spirit. As much as challenges scar us, they also show that we are alive! Challenges give purpose to us every day. Desire to be supported and encourage by other like-minded women? Join us at Women of IMPACT. http://bit.ly/WomenofIMPACT Initially, I know what you are thinking --- If I had no challenges, that would be great. It would make life easier. But would it make life easier? Possibly at the beginning. However, the journey of discovery would lessen causing you to become settled and bored with where you are in life. There would be no incentive to be your best selfie or stretch yourself in knowledge, thoughts, and actions. Discovery is the process of finding something unexpectedly or in the course of a search. A journey of discovery is ignited by the challenges in your every day. My kitty cat, Snickers, thinks she is the master of all cats. She is very smart. But even she runs into challenges. Look at SpaceX and the splashdown of the "Endeavour", named by astronauts Doug Hurley and Bob Behnken on Sunday afternoon. A mission of "testing"; a test flight. A journey of discovery will throw twists and turns, loops, and dips. In all of it though, you must own your own actions. The K.I.S.S. ~ Own your own actions! We would love life to be so easy where everything is spelled out. Little to no thought would make decision-making super easy. But life isn't about easy. It's about the simple strategies, consistency, and perseverance that keeps you on the journey of discovery. Life is full of smiles and frowns. But how you see it determines how you show up for the rainbows of challenges. So how do you own your own actions? Be true to your circumstances. Don't sugar coat everything. You know that song Just a Spoonful of Sugar helps the medicine go down. If you are not real with where you are and what is happening, other mistakes or situations could rock you more. Ownership doesn't mean defeat. Failure isn't the end of the world. It's just a hiccup in your journey of discovery. If you fall short or there's a failure, you still have the opportunity for one more step. "One step at a time leads to miles of greatness." Redirect your actions. Take A.I.M.! The cool thing about living life is you can make changes midway. Life is a journey of discovery. Get your heart, mind, body, and spirit ready for adventure every day. "Be present. Be incredible. Becoming the first crew blasted into space aboard a rocket booster and a crew capsule previously used on a spaceflight, NASA and SpaceX have successfully sent four astronauts from 3 countries into space.  The same Endeavor capsule sent two astronauts to the ISS in 2020.  Until they dock later this weekend at the ISS, they will have time to get some sleep and eat prepacked meals.  Also notable for this mission is the fact that the pilot is married to the pilot of the previous one: Megan McArthur's husband is fellow astronaut Bob Behnken, who was part of that historic first NASA-SpaceX mission last May. In a previous interview, Behnken said this time it's "her turn to focus on getting her mission accomplished" and his turn to watch their young son.  This was the third crew sent to space by SpaceX in 11 months after a 9 year break from sending humans to space from US soil.  SpaceX also nailed the rocket landing back on Earth.  This is all part of SpaceX’s plans for cheaper space flight by reusing many of the components.

The capsule, named Resilience, and its SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket rolled out to Launch Pad 39A at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida late Monday into early Tuesday (Nov. 9-10), NASA officials said. The Falcon 9 is scheduled to launch Saturday evening (Nov. 14), sending four astronauts — NASA's Victor Glover, Mike Hopkins and Shannon Walker and Japan's Soichi Noguchi — to the orbiting lab on Crew-1, SpaceX's first operational astronaut mission for NASA. NASA's Commercial Crew Program awarded SpaceX a $2.6 billion contract in 2014 to fly at least six operational crewed missions to the space station. The six-month-long Crew-1 is the first of those contracted flights, but it won't be SpaceX's first-ever astronaut mission. That distinction goes to Demo-2, a test flight that sent NASA astronauts Bob Behnken and Doug Hurley to the station for two months this past summer. SpaceX Kicks-Off Assembly on First Super Heavy Starship Booster in South Texas SpaceX's Super Heavy might be effectively complete in one month, and we couldn't be more excited. However, whether the move comes via confidence or contingency, SpaceX is jumping directly into Starship prototype development, toward a full-scale Super Heavy booster production and testing platform. Super Heavy could be one of SpaceX's easiest projects Indeed, in an inversion of the typical relationship, the next-gen rocket's booster will probably be much simpler than the upper stage — which would be the largest spacecraft with reusable parts and upper stage in the world. Lacking a need for a tiled heat shield, aerodynamic control surfaces (discounting Falcon-style grid fins), a conical nose, and possibly even internal header tanks, the only serious challenge Super Heavy faces for the first time is developing an engine section capable of feeding and supporting up to 28 Raptor engines. "I think I would not be the right person for that in a new administration." "There is a political agreement that America needs to do big things in space exploration, that we need to lead the world ... There have been lessons learned from the past, and I think Congress is in a good position to make sure that we have sustainable programs going forward," he said in one of the tweeted snippets. And in another one, he stressed that "there are a lot of people that can do great work as the NASA administrator." This Bacterium Survived on The Outside of The Space Station For a Whole Damn Year Link: https://www.sciencealert.com/this-bacterium-survived-on-the-outside-of-the-space-station-for-a-year A year in space is no walk in the park. Just ask Scott Kelly, the American astronaut who spent a year on the International Space Station (ISS) in 2015. His long-term stay in space changed his DNA, telomeres, and gut microbiome, he lost bone density, and he still had sore feet three months later. So, it's quite a feat that a species of bacterium first found in a can of meat, Deinococcus radiodurans, was still alive and kicking after a year spent living on a specially designed platform outside the pressurised module of the ISS. Researchers have been investigating these mighty microbes for a while; back in 2015, an international team set up the Tanpopo mission on the outside of the Japanese Experimental Module Kibo, to put hardy bacterial species to the test. Now, D. radiodurans has passed with flying colours. This isn't the longest time D. radiodurans has been kept in these conditions – back in August we wrote about a sample of the bacterium being left up there for three whole years. But the team weren't trying for a world record, instead they were trying to uncover what makes D. radiodurans just so good at surviving in these extreme conditions. So, after a year of radiation, freezing and boiling temperatures, and no gravity, the researchers got the spacefaring bacteria back down to Earth, rehydrated both a control that had spent the year on Earth and the Low Earth Orbit (LEO) sample, and compared their results. The survival rate was a lot lower for the LEO bacteria compared to the control version, but the bacteria that did survive seemed to be doing okay, even if they had turned a little different to their Earth-bound brethren. Space Curious
The questions we ask (and forget) to ask astronauts

Space Curious

On this episode of Space Curious, we're talking about our fascination with astronauts, an elite class of humans who have trained years for spaceflight but they are also people with families, hobbies --and --bodily functions. This year marked the first-time astronauts have launched from Florida since 2011 when astronauts Doug Hurley and Bob Behnken successfully launched on a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket in the Dragon spacecraft, made it to the space station -- and returned home, splashing down in the Gulf of Mexico. It was an epic return for American human space exploration. The astronauts -- affectionately known as “The Space Dads” -- answered a lot of questions about their journey, including about the Crew Dragon bathroom. To ask the question about why we want to know about the little oddities of space life, Space Curious host Emilee Speck spoke to space journalists Marina Koren, of The Atlantic, and Brendan Byrne, of WMFE, along with retired NASA astronaut Terry Virts. Virts offered his perspective of living in space, including some details you might not expect like giving his space station crew mate a haircut and the sounds he misses most from his spaceflights. While, Byrne and Koren both remind us that astronauts' families are also heroes of spaceflight.

Greetings, SuperFriends! Today we are joined by Josh Clemente. Josh, the founder of Levels, is a mechanical engineer and CrossFit-L2 trainer. At SpaceX, he led a team to develop life support systems that sustained astronauts Bob Behnken and Doug Hurley on their May 2020 trip to the International Space Station aboard Dragon Endeavor: the first new crew-carrying spacecraft since 1980. Josh has also spent time designing and building Hyperloop technology and leading engineering for a company providing vehicle-based rescue systems for emergency response teams. But, we barely talked about any of that stuff today, because, as I already mentioned, Josh is the founder of a really fascinating company that I've been following for a while, called Levels. Their idea is that wearables are nice, but they rarely give you real, powerful data about what's going in your body. Well, Levels is trying to change that, by coming out with the first consumer-available continuous glucose monitor. Now, you've probably heard the hardcore biohackers in the world, like Dave Asprey and Tim Ferriss, wearing these glucose monitors that they need all kinds of connections to get, and all the wonderful things you can learn by wearing a glucose monitor. So, I wanted to learn what the big deal is with these, and why it's such an important technology to put in the hands of consumers. I ended up learning a lot about what turns out to be one of the most important molecules in the body - glucose - which powers almost everything that you do. And that's why we need to make sure that we have just the right Goldilocks level layers in our body at all times - more about this in the episode. I think you are really going to enjoy this episode, as I did! -Jonathan Levi

Launching a new age of human spaceflight in the United States, Elon Musk's SpaceX can officially consider itself the first-ever company to send humans into space on a commercial spacecraft. So without further ado, welcome. You're part of the new era of space travel. As a member of the human race, SpaceX's historic rocket launch could mean big things for you. After all, according to Elon Musk, “Human spaceflight was the reason SpaceX was created.”On Saturday, May 30 at 3:22 p.m., history was made when SpaceX successfully launched the Crew Dragon capsule carrying NASA astronauts Bob Behnken and Doug Hurley — the first two people to fly in a SpaceX vehicle. And just like that, a new era of American space travel took flight. In the same moment Elon Musk had been working toward for over a decade, the launch revolutionized the American space program, and made traveling to the stars seem just within reach. In a special episode of The Abstract, we recap SpaceX's historic mission of the first crewed spaceflight to take off from U.S. soil in nearly a decade. For many Americans, Doug Hurley's and Bob Behnken's success into orbit on SpaceX's Falcon 9 rocket changed everything. Revving up the United States' space program, #LaunchAmerica became the hashtag of the week at a time when we needed it the most.Marking the end of a nine-year period in which the U.S. had to rely on Russia to send astronauts to space, SpaceX's success proved America is back in business and headed for the stars. As 2020 continues to be a year that tests American resilience, perhaps Elon Musk puts it best: “This event is something that all of humanity can get excited about. It's just a fundamentally positive, good thing, and I think we need more good things in this world.”Read more at: inverse.com/the-abstractSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
