Carl Niedzielski, named John DellaPenna at birth, was born in Western Massachusetts during the Baby Scoop Era of the late 1960s, and was relinquished and then adopted at some point at or soon after birth. Due to the low birthweight documented on his original birth certificate, it is assumed he spent time in NICU and also probably in foster care or in an orphanage such as the one operated by the agency that managed his adoption, Brightside for Children. As he has learned more about the impact of early childhood trauma, and connected more dots between his life experiences and the research in that area, a focus of his searching has been on finding out about his first few months of life; but the task has been challenging and may not ever be successful. While Carl always knew he was adopted, he did not learn about his biomom until 5 years ago, when he obtained his original birth certificate, which gave his biomom's name, Gladys, and also the surprising information that she had been 41 years old at the time of his birth— in the 1960s, that would have been considered a very high risk pregnancy. He has recently been surprised again, when a random re-check of old Ancestry data yielded first contact with a bona fide biological relative. But that is when the story got weirder and led to the resolution many adoptees face: A more shocking story than expected, more information than ever hoped for, but still persistent gaps that with passing time are unlikely to be filled. Professionally, Carl works as a Senior Director, Grants and Research Development for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. He is a passionate mental health advocate, reader, armchair detective, binger of all things, urban hiker, word-gamer, and beacher. He is a beginner in the adult adoptee community, but you can find him on social media occasionally participating in many of the wonderful online communities for adult adoptees. In this episode we weave Carls personal journey with his professional insights. He sheds light on the reality of suicide research along with a bounty of ideas on how we can take action. Resources mentioned: AFSP (American Foundation for Suicide Prevention)NAMI( National Alliance on Mental Illness)https://www.pulledbytheroot.com/

September is Suicide Awareness and Prevention Month. Suicide is something people don't talk about often or enough. Here at the Unqualified Therapists, we talk about it often, not just in September, but all year long. It is important to normalize the emotions one has when they experience suicidal ideations. It is important to normalize the word suicide, saying it out loud doesn't make it happen more, but actually does the opposite. It is important that those struggling and those who have lost loved ones to suicide know they are not alone, the are NOT the only ones.  The stigma still stands, but things are getting better. In this episode, I share my experience at the “Out of the Darkness Walk” in Pittsburgh this month. It gave me some hope that one day the stigma will be shattered and that we can openly talk about the darkest days of our lives. On the AFSP (American Foundation for Suicide Prevention) website it says, “Talk Away the Dark. Talking is the first step to preventing suicide.” And so we talk and talk and talk even when people try to make us stop. It's been a year since my own suicidal ideation and regardless of the repercussions, I am proud that I shared and talked about it with all of you. I have no regrets. Sarah and I started the podcast for the main reason of talking about the dark stuff that no one wants to talk about so we all feel less alone. And that is what we do. We know it's a heavy topic and that is okay, but because we are us, we of course have to throw in some ridiculousness. Listen in as we discuss the new term “bed rotting”, missing out on possibly the show of our life with Aerosmith, and which one of us has zero interest in NSYNC.  We love you and are so happy you are here. If you are in a tough time right now, know it will get better. You might not be able to see it, but keep hanging on, keep moving forward, because it will pass. This episode comes with a content warning. The story includes discussion of sexual assault, addiction, and suicide.  Stephen Covey is a popular author, and he wrote the best-selling book titled The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. Great book, highly recommended.  In that book, Covey tells a personal story that has come back to my mind many times in the years since I first read that book. This is what he wrote: “I remember a mini-paradigm shift I experienced one Sunday morning on a subway in New York. People were sitting quietly – some reading newspapers, some lost in thought, some resting with their eyes closed. It was a calm, peaceful scene. Then suddenly, a man and his children entered the subway car. The children were so loud and rambunctious that instantly the whole climate changed. The man sat down next to me and closed his eyes, apparently oblivious to the situation. The children were yelling back and forth, throwing things, even grabbing people's papers. It was very disturbing. And yet, the man sitting next to me did nothing.  It was difficult not to feel irritated. I could not believe that he could be so insensitive as to let his children run wild like that and do nothing about it, taking no responsibility at all. It was easy to see that everyone else on the subway felt irritated, too. So finally, with what I felt like was unusual patience and restraint, I turned to him and said, “Sir, your children are really disturbing a lot of people. I wonder if you couldn't control them a little more?” The man lifted his gaze as if to come to a consciousness of the situation for the first time and said softly, “Oh, you're right. I guess I should do something about it. We just came from the hospital where their mother died about an hour ago. I don't know what do think, and I guess they don't know who to handle it either.” Can you imagine what I felt at that moment? My paradigm shifted. Suddenly I saw things differently, and because I saw differently, I thought differently, I felt differently, I behaved differently. My irritation vanished. I didn't have to worry about controlling my attitude or my behavior; my heart was filled with the man's pain. Feelings of sympathy and compassion flowed freely. “Your wife just died? Oh I'm so sorry! Can you tell me about it? What can I do to help?” Everything changed in an instant.”  I've never forgotten that story. All the people we encounter while we're just going through our day to day lives…they're going through things that we know nothing about. It's easy to judge someone or form an opinion based on what we observe, but there are always other factors that we can't see. I think, in a lot of cases, if we knew what was really going on, our anger or impatience might be replaced with empathy and compassion. My guest today is Kylie. She's been through some trauma, and you'll hear it in her voice as she talks with the 911 dispatcher. I think her story can help all of us to perhaps see things from a perspective other than our own. — Grief continues to give me opportunities to learn and grow. It teaches me to live with a heart full of gratitude and to learn to love others and myself more. It allows me to live my purpose, which is to help you on your journey. Do you realize that you change every day of your life? Each thought, experience, choice, and response creates change in you. In other words, you will either evolve or devolve in your daily existence. You have the opportunity to change for your good. How? By making conscious choices to enhance your body, mind, and soul. Realize you are always in a state of “becoming what you think.” So what are you thinking? Even in the midst of difficult times and grief, there is always something beautiful to be found. – Says Robin  Valeria interviews Robin Chodak — the author of “Ten Grief Lessons from Golf.” Robin left her job after 20 years as a computer software systems analyst following the suicide of her husband Steve in 2005.  In the midst of grief, she started a spiritual journey of self-discovery, which ultimately led to her transformation. After the suicide she started to write. At first it was personal letters to Steve. It helped her stay connected and at the same time it was therapeutic. She also began to write stories about grief, which are published in various grief and suicide journals.  In 2017 she published, "Be Gentle with Me, I'm Grieving" which won a book excellence award and also published "Moving to Excellence, A Pathway to Transformation After Grief." Grief continued to enter Robin's life.  On September 28, 2019 she lost her beloved husband Dr. Gerald Chodak unexpectedly in their home.  It was another sudden death, which caused grief trauma.  It led her to publish a 3rd book that she had written 3 years prior regarding inner peace entitled, "3 Must Have Connections for Inner Peace." In 2021 Robin launched her new online program that teaches and certifies you to become a Grief Coach. Robin's expertise is in coaching clients, speaking, writing books and teaching through online grief courses. Robin is a trained facilitator for AFSP (American Foundation for Suicide Prevention), The founder of Facebook Suicide Recovery, owner of Robin Chodak Coaching and Grief Healing LLC, Certified Grief, Life, Spiritual Coach, Certified Mindfulness Meditation Teacher, International Speaker, Certified Reiki Practitioner, Certified Master NLP Practitioner, Author of 4 books and Creator of Online courses available on Udemy.com.
