With special guest: Gerry Georgatos… in conversation with Bill Kable We are honoured today to have as our special guest a social warrior, Gerry Georgatos. Gerry is the founder of the National Suicide Prevention & Trauma Recovery Project (the Project) set up in 2019. His colleague Megan Krakouer appeared on The Drum to talk about the work Gerry and she are doing with young Aboriginal offenders in Western Australian prisons. Footage has emerged of young children being hog-tied by prison guards and Megan spoke of the need for help. Gerry Georgatos has remained constant as a social justice and human rights campaigner. His social justice and human rights campaigns began at an early age, from 11 years of age. From that young age he would represent workers of migrant Greek backgrounds, victims of asbestosis – mesothelioma – who struggled with the English language. Podcast (mp3)

Cody Johnson's music makes an impact far beyond the Country music charts. Always one to record songs he believes in, connects with and hopes will inspire, Johnson's fans have confirmed he's doing just that by expressing how his music has impacted — and even saved — their lives. During a recent chat with Audacy's Scotty Kay from US99, Johnson shared a story he heard from a fan in Australia who literally owed her life to one of his songs. “I had a lady in Australia [who] came to a meet and greet and she said, ‘the night that I was going to take my own life… I heard, ‘Human,' and I decided not to,” he shared. “I stood there with her and I cried and I thought, ‘Who cares about a #1 or a Platinum record? That's real. That's real music that went across the ocean and touched somebody.” While many of the life-chasing stories he hears are surrounding his life-affirming songs like “Human,” and “'Til You Can't,” there's also a number of love stories he's touched. Later in their chat, Scotty Kay introduced Johnson to DJ Dom Nagella, who was approached by a bi-racial couple to help them turn Johnson's song, "On My Way To You" into a cross-genre track for their wedding. “She was born and raised in Texas and he's Puerto Rican, so they wanted ‘On My Way To You,' with Marc Anthony,” Nagella explained before playing him the track. Johnson was all smiles listening to the mix. “I love Marc Anthony! That is freakin' cool, man! This is great.” He continued, “Puerto Rican is a little bit different than the Tejano Mexican culture that we have in Texas, and I'm so deeply rooted in that… That means a lot, that's really cool... Hey, maybe I'll make a Tejano album,” he laughed. Beaming with pride, Johnson reiterated, “It's not about getting #1 hits, it's not about getting Platinum records, it's not about getting awards, it's about making music that actually touches people — I say that from my whole heart, this is not an act.” If you're having suicidal thoughts, call the National Suicide Prevention at 988 to talk to a skilled, trained counselor at a crisis center in your area at any time. Audacy's I'm Listening initiative aims to encourage those who are dealing with mental health issues to understand they are not alone. Find a full list of additional resources here. Hello Beautiful souls! Today I talked the amazing download I recieved about the difference between waiting vs patience for our desires. I discuss How the energy of waiting is lack energy and repels your desires away How the energy of patience is abundance and attracts your dreams more strongly I compare how having patience is like ordering food at a restaurant What to do when different things come up or you dont get what you want and dont like it or when its better than before How pleasure is important in the manifestation process Will it feel good to do or to have done? In this episode of The Optimistic American, we explore the intricate layers of national security, fiscal responsibility, and intellectual freedom. Paul Johnson hosts former Air Force pilot, influential advocate, and congressman, Chris Stewart as he helps us navigate through complex geopolitical realities, the pressing issues of mental health, and the often-underestimated importance of balanced budgets. We will be covering the following points in this episode: National Security: We deep-dive into the state of our military and the challenges we face in homeland protection. We assess Washington's role in fortifying our armed forces, ensuring readiness against global threats. Balanced Budgets: Addressing fiscal responsibility, we discuss the necessity of balanced budgets. We explore the implications of budget deficits and debt, drawing on Stewart's experience in the congressional appropriations committee. The 'Deep State': Shining light on the shadowy corners of the intelligence community, we confront allegations concerning the 'Deep State.' The conversation uncovers Stewart's perspective on congressional oversight and democratic accountability. Edward Snowden and Intelligence Disclosure: Discussing the ongoing debate on intelligence disclosures, we reflect on the actions of Edward Snowden. We examine the balance between protection of privacy rights and national security. Mental Health: Shifting the attention to mental well-being, we explore Stewart's involvement in establishing the National Suicide Prevention hotline. We discuss how best to support individuals struggling with depression and underscore the interplay between mental health and overall community resilience. Challenges We Face: With references drawn from Stewart's book "The Final Fight for Freedom," we delve into democracy's survival concerns. In light of the challenges, we brainstorm solutions to bridge the political divide for a united America. Find his book on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Final-Fight-Freedom-Country-Chaos/dp/1637582145 Future of the Utah Aerospace and Defense Association: We conclude with a teaser into the exciting plans ahead for the Utah Aerospace and Defense Association and Stewart's new venture, Skyline Capital, co-founded with Robert O'Brien, a former national security adviser. In this episode we talk about mental illness and mental disorders stemming from having to work in a toxic and hostile work environment. We also address how we can file an OWCP stress claim regarding our mental illness and/or disorders, what's needed to do that, and other useful resources to combat the mistreatment from management and the toxic and hostile working conditions we deal with at any moment on any given day. It's time we realize that mental illness is real and can affect anyone at any time during our careers, and it's time we take a stand and hold those who knowingly and willfully created our mental illness and/or disorders accountable for their actions. * Please call the National Suicide Prevention & Mental Health Crisis Line at 988. They will be there with you in the moment, in your time of need, and could be that shinning light in your darkest moment. And it's free. Again, please call 988 if you need someone to talk with. You are not alone, never forget that.

A new investigation for The Sunday Times finds that unnecessary operations happen every year in private hospitals. And when that happens and patients try to get justice, they can find it impossible to get compensation. September is National Suicide Prevention and Awareness Month with World Suicide Prevention Day falling on September 10th. In today's episode of Psych Talk I discuss 988 - the three digit number for the United States' national crisis and suicide lifeline. 988 became the new number for the hotline in July 2022, replacing the old 10 digit phone number in hopes of increasing ease of remembering the number in a crisis. In this episode I explain what 988 is, what happens when you call, text, or chat with the hotline, and answer some FAQs about the hotline - are they tracking me? Will the police be called? Additionally, I shared some of the data about usage and outcomes over the past year that the hotline under this new number has been active, as well as future directions for the hotline. In a recent episode, Thom explored the subject of where suicidal thoughts come from. And while this might help us understand the origins of suicidal thoughts, it doesn't explain the evolutionary role that suicide plays.Thom takes us deeper in this episode and delivers a comforting perspective, which doesn't condone suicide as such but explains how it is at least evolutionary. Importantly, he explains that while it may be evolutionary, there are even more evolutionary alternatives available. Mountain Village is an Alaska Native town in the middle of nowhere. One woman is the town's only police officer and she alone is responsible for the safety of everyone there. Her track record is perfect until one day when she responds to a call that changes everything. This story discusses suicide, violence, and contains strong language. Sensitive listeners, please be advised. We can't thank Anna Bill and Jim and Eunice Bryan enough for sharing their stories with us. We also want to thank Cathy Moses and the Mountain Village Tribal Council for their time and patience. Additional thanks to Francine Chiklak, Johanna Eurich, Steve Hiemel, Shane Iverson, Anna Rose MacArthur, Lori Townsend, and Anna Walters. In addition to Anna Bill's work, Mountain Village is tackling its suicide and public safety crises with grassroots community programs, as well as a tribal court system that focuses on restorative justice. You can learn more about them here and here. A version of this story was first reported for NPR affiliate KYUK in Bethel, Alaska in 2018. If you're interested in learning more about rural Alaska and its public safety crisis, we recommend following KYUK and KNBA's coverage, as well as ProPublica's Lawless series.
