Sonya Bohmann,  Board Chair of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, discussed their mission of research, education and prevention and support.  We discussed new data, suicide has now become the 11th leading cause of death for adults, up from 12th, with rates for youth rising – depending on the state, to 2nd to 6th leading cause of death.  She spoke about programs aimed at communities with higher rates but less open conversation, including their L.E.T.S. Save Lives: An Introduction to Suicide Prevention for Black and African American Communities, a presentation created by and for Black people to reduce cultural stigma and raise awareness for individuals who identify as Black or African American.  She also discussed AFSP free programing for students, from Gizmo the dog talking about ‘big feelings' to younger children, to middle and high-school programs that encourage conversation and listening skills.  She recommends the website Seize the Awkward for guidance on reaching students and young adults. We talked about 988, now in its second year. She described its funding and the teams answering calls or texts, always a trained counselor, and in many larger cities, a trained mobile response crew.  She notes that older resources, such as 741741, are still operational, too. She asked for volunteers, anyone can help, either through sharing their own lived experience or by helping with events.  Visit the AFSP website for more information. We talked about the 20th annual Out of the Darkness Walk, October 6th at a new site, The Mann Center, with its plenty of free parking and beautiful grounds.  Walk-ups are welcome, but you're encouraged to register now, as an individual or as a team.  If you can't walk, you can select a team to support for the walk website, AFSP.ORG/PHILLYWALK    Andie Summers of The Andie Summers Show on Beasley Media Group's 92.5 XTU will be the emcee. AFSP has added a Kick Off to the Walk where team captains come to pick up their t-shirts, signs, and more for the walk to start rallying their team and all can ‘Dine and Donate.'   On July 17th between 4pm-10pm, everyone is invited to the Texas Roadhouse in Montgomeryville, Downingtown, or Glen Mills, team captains can pick up their gear for the walk and everyone is able to donate through their dining check.  Bring a FLYER posted at 925XTU.com  or AFSP.ORG/PHILLYWALK's website, and 10% of your total bill at Texas Roadhouse will go back to AFSP. Wondering what PMDD is after reading the title? You're likely in good company. Although Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD) affects between 3 and 4 million women in the US, it is still a relatively unknown disorder that is often misdiagnosed. To help us understand what PMDD is and how it impacts women and their families, Marybeth Bohn joins Robin for this important episode. Marybeth's daughter, Christina, battled PMDD for more than a decade before Marybeth helped lead doctors to her diagnosis. This episode gives listeners a front-row seat to a young woman's struggle and a mother's worst nightmare.  Special Guest:Marybeth Bohn has been advocating for PMDD (Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder) since she lost her daughter, Christina Elizabeth Bohn, to suicide in 2021 due to the disorder. The thought of others suffering as her daughter did for 10 to 15 years before receiving a correct diagnosis motivates Marybeth to keep speaking out. She speaks publicly about PMDD to increase awareness and to reduce the time in getting an accurate diagnosis. She has spoken at the University of Missouri, Postpartum Support International Climb Out of the Darkness Walk, Missouri House of Representatives Committee on Healthcare Reform, Women's Mental Health Conference at Yale, NIH Prevention in Focus Webinar, and many other venues. In 2023, she worked with the Missouri State Legislature to pass a bill for having an annual PMDD Awareness Day on October 2nd, which is Christina's birthday. Missouri is the first state in the U.S. to officially have a PMDD Awareness Day.Marybeth serves as vice president of the Board of Directors for the International Association for Premenstrual Disorders (IAPMD) and has actively served as a PMDD Champion. After Christina's death, Marybeth retired from the University of Missouri to focus on increasing awareness of PMDD. To learn more about PMDD, go to the presentation Marybeth mentions in the show:https://www.prevention.nih.gov/education-training/prevention-focus-webinars/it-more-pms-learn-about-pmdd

September is Suicide Awareness and Prevention Month. Suicide is something people don't talk about often or enough. Here at the Unqualified Therapists, we talk about it often, not just in September, but all year long. It is important to normalize the emotions one has when they experience suicidal ideations. It is important to normalize the word suicide, saying it out loud doesn't make it happen more, but actually does the opposite. It is important that those struggling and those who have lost loved ones to suicide know they are not alone, the are NOT the only ones.  The stigma still stands, but things are getting better. In this episode, I share my experience at the “Out of the Darkness Walk” in Pittsburgh this month. It gave me some hope that one day the stigma will be shattered and that we can openly talk about the darkest days of our lives. On the AFSP (American Foundation for Suicide Prevention) website it says, “Talk Away the Dark. Talking is the first step to preventing suicide.” And so we talk and talk and talk even when people try to make us stop. It's been a year since my own suicidal ideation and regardless of the repercussions, I am proud that I shared and talked about it with all of you. I have no regrets. Sarah and I started the podcast for the main reason of talking about the dark stuff that no one wants to talk about so we all feel less alone. And that is what we do. We know it's a heavy topic and that is okay, but because we are us, we of course have to throw in some ridiculousness. Listen in as we discuss the new term “bed rotting”, missing out on possibly the show of our life with Aerosmith, and which one of us has zero interest in NSYNC.  We love you and are so happy you are here. If you are in a tough time right now, know it will get better. You might not be able to see it, but keep hanging on, keep moving forward, because it will pass. You will never be the same following the loss of someone you care about to suicide. Loss is part of your history, but it doesn't have to tell the whole story. Erika Barber,  first lost her older sister, Andrea. Then later on, Erika lost her dad, John. Through those losses came the ability to start having conversations of courage and Erika's  courageousness to be comfortable talking about the uncomfortable leads to connection.    Welcome to episode two hundred twenty two of Above Ground Podcast. We continue with our Suicide Prevention and Awareness month episodes, as we have done since 2019, with our guest,  Erika Barber.      Erika Barber,  first lost her older sister, Andrea, when Erika was just fifteen to suicide. When Andrea died, Erika wanted to just be a teenager. She couldn't address her pain like an adult, she  wanted to hang with her friends. Forget the inevitable changes that were ahead for her family and the grief of losing your older sister. Forget her life would be forever touched by suicide. She'd be the that girl who's sister died by suicide.    Following the loss of Andrea, Erika's mother dealt with her pain by drowning it in alcohol, while her dad sought out help. John, went to the groups, took his meds as prescribed, faced the loss of his daughter, Andrea. John lost his battle with depression eight years ago. Once again, Erika was facing a loss by suicide. But, not just any loss. This was the loss of her dad in 2015. The loss of her dad was profound.    Erika lived with mental health challenges herself. Facing a family of mental health challenges, both figuratively and literally.  Erika did the work to find herself working through her loss courageously.    Erika found the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention  in 2007, through an Out of the Darkness walk. Her ten year Board of Director's term  just ended. Erika wanted to be involved as soon as she heard a radio ad that was calling her tribe together. People that would finally get her and understand.    October 24, 2023 is the Chicagoland AFSP Out of the Darkness Walk in Chicago, Illinois. Erika will be in attendance and if you're in the Chicagoland area you should be too.  Especially , since you're more closer than you think to someone who died by suicide.    Come to Saratoga Spa State Park on Sunday September, 24,2023 at 9am for the Out of the Darkness Walk for R.I.T.A. and remember our loved ones. Welcome to episode two hundred twenty one of Above Ground Podcast. This week Will & TPP kick off September and Suicide Prevention and Awareness month with a raw  and frank  discussion on staying alive when you don't really want to live. This is could be a triggering conversation for some, so just take precautions when listening.    Living on a Prayer was not just Bon Jovi's biggest hit, it's sometimes the way we survive life's tragedies. Throwing up our hands and saying I can't do it alone, finding our higher power and letting go.  For those of us who live with suicidal ideation or depression sometimes wanting to live is just too hard. Fighting to make it through another day is far too heavy a burden.    During this month we remember the lost. But, let us not forget those that are still amongst us giving their best to just survive another day.   Help us celebrate those that we have lost on Sunday September 24,2023 at Orenda Pavillon in Saratoga Spa State Park for Out of the Darkness Walk for RITA 2023 at 9am.    Also this Saturday, September 9, from 1-4 at the Knox Town Park for the Kiwanis Club of the Helderbergs Art Festival for Mental Health, 2192 Berne-Altamont Road, Altamont NY 12209.  Check out Amy Modesti's piece spotlighting AGP will be there and is looking forward to seeing everyone.    Thanks for listening and return every Wednesday. Do you see your life clearly? Do you let others see you, really see YOU? Do you see that others care and will help you? Unfortunately, the stigma that surrounds mental illness makes it difficult for many people to feel comfortable opening up about how they feel, what their struggles are and how tough their day might be going. We must break that stigma so that EVERYONE with a mental illness feels comfortable talking about it and so that most importantly, they seek help and find hope to keep going. This week's conversation might be difficult for some of you to hear because my guest Nina Judge and I will be talking about mental illness and suicide. Nina bravely shares the story of her father John's passing to suicide in 2021. And she provides us with hope through the work that she is doing through the nonprofit John Malvizzi Foundation, named after her father. Check out the website by clicking on the foundation name above; learn how to donate; offer help; or join their team for the Out of the Darkness Walk in Wilkes-Barre on 9/10. While this is a serious conversation, there is light. I encourage you to listen and share your light with others so they know that they are not alone. And if you or anyone you know needs help, please remember that you can call or text 988, the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline; visit the website for more information. Thank you for listening. We discuss why parents should be free to follow their gut instincts in parenting decisions without the pressure of other people's intrusion and the backlash that comes with those decisions.  Show Highlights: How Alicia's pregnancy and birth did NOT turn out like she wanted and expected–and only heightened her health anxiety How Alicia experienced D-MER (dysphoric milk ejection reflex) and tongue, lip, and buckle ties with her newborn Why she had bonding issues with her baby as the massive snowball of anxiety, D-MER, and diastasis hit her How things came to a head with feelings of hopelessness, loneliness, and a life with no joy How a PSI Climb Out Of the Darkness Walk helped Alicia to see the light at the end of the tunnel Why Alicia decided to do sleep training with her daughter and found immediate relief and improvement How switching to formula feeding helped relieve some of Alicia's anxiety How prioritizing herself and self-care made Alicia a better mom for her baby How Alicia transitioned back into good sleep, productive work, and pelvic floor therapy—then the pandemic hit and turned everything upside down, making her terrified to leave her home How anxiety medications and therapy helped Alicia realize that anxiety is not a character flaw How she worked to be more comfortable in leaving her house and going out in public Why Alicia did a TEDx talk about her experience to help other moms Why there is undue pressure for the one who becomes the “default parent” Resources: Connect with Alicia Delory: Website, Instagram, TikTok, and TEDx talk (Recognizing the Duality of Permission for New Moms) Visit www.postpartum.net for resources and support!  Visit www.postpartum.net/professionals/certificate-trainings/ for information on the grief course.   Visit my website, www.wellmindperinatal.com, for more information, resources, and courses you can take today! Our conversation today with Jenna DeHaven, Director of Advancement for United Way Northern Shenandoah Valley included Robyn Miller, Executive Director of the Winchester Area Temporary Thermal Shelter. Robyn gave us the history of her organization and talked about the important role it plays for the homeless in our community. She explained how the overnight shelter works with support from local churches. The overnight shelter has operated from November – March every year since that first season in 2009 (even during the COVID-19 shutdowns!)  WATTS is a low-barrier shelter, meaning they take ANYONE who is homeless, regardless of sobriety or criminal background.  For this reason, the shelter is for ADULTS only and volunteers must be at least 18 years of age.  The shelter can house up to 35 guests each night on cots that are cleaned and moved each week to the next host group location.  WATTS owns the cots and linens, which are laundered each week and stored during the off-season.  Some of the host groups have shower facilities for guests to be able to clean up.  Many people come in to volunteer their various talents to guests, such as providing haircuts, music therapy, and medical services, to name a few. In addition to the overnight shelter they provide, seasonally they operate warming/cooling centers from Market Street UMC (131 S. Cameron Street, Winchester.) The Warming Center gives homeless individuals a safe, warm place to sit for a few minutes or a few hours to warm up from the cold.  WATTS offers snacks and warm drinks daily and has breakfast and lunch offerings on various days, provided by generous volunteers!  Open during the coldest months - December through March - Monday - Saturday from 7am - 2pm and Sundays 12 noon – 6pm. The Warming Center also serves as the bus stop/pick-up point to go to the overnight shelter for the weeks when the host location is NOT a downtown, walkable church. The Cooling Center gives homeless individuals a safe, air-conditioned place to sit for a few minutes or a few hours to help cool off from the heat.  WATTS offers snacks and refreshing drinks daily and has lunch offerings on various days, provided by generous volunteers!  Open during the hottest summer months - July and August - from noon to 5 pm. Robyn also told us about their Transition Out of Homelessness program which offers staff to help guests with things such as obtaining birth certificates and identification, assisting with job applications, forms for Centralized Housing Intake, and apartments, applying for Medicaid, Medicare, and SNAP benefits, information and placement in drug and alcohol detox/rehabilitation programs as a few examples. She explained that falling into homelessness is easy and can happen quickly; getting out is much more difficult and complex.  Her team works with guests to set simple, achievable goals, and then serve in a case manager-type role to help guests achieve those goals, with the ultimate objective being to assist guests on their path to a safe, stable future. Before we wrapped up our conversation, Robyn told us about their first annual Coldest Night of the Year (CNOY) Walk beginning at 4pm on Saturday, February 25, 2023. It's a FUNdraiser that culminates in a Walk that happens every year in February in cities all over North America. The walk is held in February (a typically snowy and often frigid month) to allow folks to step outside the warmth and comfort of home and experience a little bit of what it might be like to be homeless – the purpose of the walk is to raise awareness and funds for people experiencing hurt, hunger, and homelessness. It works similarly to Relay for Life or the Out of the Darkness Walk to fight suicide, where you commit to walking and ask family, friends, etc. to sponsor your mileage. Walkers, teams, volunteers, and donors are needed. ANYONE can participate in this event – the routes (choose the 2k or 5k) are within Winchester city limits, on sidewalks, with easy intersections. Click here for more information or to register. Jenna encouraged listeners to consider volunteering to serve on United Way's fund distribution panels to be part of the decision-making process of distributing the funds that are raised through the campaign each year. You can find more information by clicking here. She also reminded us of the Rubbermaid Sale happening on Saturday, January 28, 2023 from 9am - 12pm in the Belk parking lot at Apple Blossom Mall.

This episode was supposed to be launched in early 2023 but I thought it was fitting to release it early due to another loss of a public figure due to suicide. As a mental health provider, sometimes stories and cases confuse me and throw me off. Why? How? What? Psychiatrists, more than other medical field physicians, are supposed to be more familiar with and an expert at understanding suicide. But, the more training I get, the more I am aware of what I don't know... but I want the listeners to know what I at least know. In this episode, I have a guest who is very familiar with death and suicide, Gillian Rodriguez, a therapist who specializes in prevention, intervention, and postvention of suicide. She and I have a conversation as human beings trying to understand the intricacies, depth, and darkness of suicide. We will also talk about perspectives and sources of hope for people who are wondering if suicide is the solution to their life's pain... and those around them who love them. If you are wondering and considering suicide, please reach out to help. 9-8-8. Our first repeat guest is back with a new ring, a new book and she is helping us elevate peer support. Valery Brosseau is back and the first time she asked us, is it in the blood? But now she is screaming the way out is through.  We continue with our suicide prevention series with a bad ass story of how Valery went through and has a book of her poetry “through”. She has a lifetime invitation here at AGP and after listening to her you will understand why.  Congratulations to her and Shane on their recent marriage. We wish them both all the best.   It's expensive to be crazy,  jokes Valery Brosseau. About what the cost is to have a mental illness, and run your own business. Val is a self contained creator of sorts. More humor and levity is necessary when combating stigma and allowing for people to see someone they might view differently.  The universe will come together when you represent what the universe wants to reflect in you, expounds Val., In Through, her first poetry book, she opens up her hope chest and displays it in the rawest of view, for the world to see, to judge.  But judgement don't matter when you are a black belt in karate and a purple in Brazilian jujitsu. I told you, she kicks ass.  If you need one person or five people to pick you back up, there is no shame in any of that, expounds Brosseau. Self compassion she views as a key ingredient in healing and moving forward.  Setbacks will happen it is inevitable. The best response is to take a deep breath and explore your body, your mind. We are fallible. We are human doings.  Little moments of joy and being able to find those moments she acknowledges is the second key to getting over a setback. The only path we have is to move forward.  Val was recently excepted into a Master's of Social Work program and is pursing her dreams. Val says… “expressing is better than impressing.” Valéry Brosseau can be found at https://www.valerybrosseau.com Val's book of poetry, Through, is available from Amazon. From inpatient to outpatient and back into the world. Touting the help he received  from Four Winds of Saratoga, NY.  “The work on your{model railroad} layout is never done and neither is the work on yourself” emphasizes Andrew. If you can, form a team and raise some much-needed funds and awareness. If you can't, please come out and support and walk with 2000 others that have been impacted by suicide.  And remember, there is now a new 3-digit number for people in crisis... 988.  This is in addition to the 800-273-TALK (8255), which has been in operation for years!
