In this emotional episode of the Journey Beyond Divorce Podcast, host Karen McMahon dives deep into the complex emotions of divorce grief with expert guest Shelby Forsythia, a grief coach, author, and founder of Life After Loss Academy. Together, they explore the often-overlooked and multi-layered grief that accompanies the end of a marriage and how it impacts individuals during and after divorce. Shelby shares her personal journey through grief, starting with the loss of her mother in 2013, and how this transformed her approach to loss and healing. She reveals how unresolved grief from past losses, such as the death of a loved one or the dissolution of a marriage, can resurface during difficult transitions, like divorce. In this episode, Shelby offers practical strategies for divorce recovery, including mindfulness tools, personal stories, and the importance of setting emotional boundaries with unsupportive loved ones. The discussion also covers how societal perceptions often ignore the grief that comes with divorce and why it's essential to acknowledge and process these emotions to move forward. Shelby provides actionable steps to help those grieving during divorce find peace, build resilience, and rebuild a fulfilling life. Shelby Forsythia (she/her) is a compassionate grief coach and the creator of Life After Loss Academy, a powerful online course and community that supports individuals through life transitions such as divorce, death, and diagnoses. Featured in Huffington Post, Bustle, and The Oprah Magazine, Shelby has made it her life's work to help others embrace grief as a teacher and create meaningful lives after major loss. This topic is something about the grieving experience that I'm always (desperately) trying to normalize. Episode 397 - Rachel Fowler - Writer, Actor, Director and Grief Coach - Hold Space For Those That GrieveGrief is transformative.  It changes us, moulds us into something new.  It takes intention and reflection and being present to fully appreciate the metamorphosis, and to accept it, welcome it, turn towards it.My mission is to give you a safe, comforting space to feel all the big feelings and conflicting emotions around the changes, losses or uncertainty you are facing.I'll guide you through, I'll listen and I'll witness. Together we'll remember, we'll explore, we'll reframe, we'll tap into your creativity, we'll cry and we'll laugh. My dad died after a long hospital stay and failure to thrive after several complicated surgeries. My 13 year old nephew died from a drug overdose on my daughters birthday. In both of these incidents, I experienced beautiful kindness and emotional support from some and the painful recoil and avoidance from others.  The fear and discomfort of the latter stung in so many ways, adding little cuts to my emotionally bruised self. I dissected those cuts, those moments.  Intellectually, I knew they weren't about me, but they pierced my core, they offended me still, and oh man, they HURT SO MUCH.  Grief is so isolating to begin with, and these made me spend most of my energy holding myself together, strapping my emotions in – all so I wouldn't make others uncomfortable. And I learned that the pain subsided as I shifted my focus to the helpers.  As Mr. Rogers says, “Look for the helpers. You'll always find people who are helping.” Those who sat with me while I wept, unable to speak.  Those who held my hand, who took me to the airport, who watched Grace for a bit, who dropped off food, who remembered to ask me how I was and listen, even if I didn't want to answer. The idea of holding space become more and more prominent in my creative work: I wrote and directed a short film about it, and am currently working on a Young Adult novel with this as a central theme.  I also trained as a coach in late 2019, and as we lived through the first wave of COVID and the lockdown of 2020, I realized that this was what I wanted to do.  I want to hold space for people in pain.  Help them navigate the unchartered waters of loss and the uncertainty it brings.  Explore who they are now that they have been through this challenge, this bliss.  Reveal to them that they are not broken, they are just beautifully, lovingly, painfully human.https://www.rachelfowlergriefcoach.com/https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0288786/Support the Show.___https://livingthenextchapter.com/podcast produced by: https://truemediasolutions.ca/

It can be difficult to find courage to talk about endometriosis and the effects of the disease on fertility.  In this episode, Julie shares: her personal story of how circumstances beyond her control have shown her what her life's path is meant to be and how she has embraced walking it; dealing with the loss of something she may never have; the importance of finding the right people to support you; and how turning to creativity and making beauty in hardship was the catalyst for her business, Anam Cara Clay Goods. Julie Freeman-Mullins is a Tennessee girl at heart, having lived most of her life in the Smoky Mountains of East Tennessee.  She has been blessed to journey through life with her husband and best friend, Josh.  They have been married since 2012 and have 2 fur babies: Saydi, a yellow lab/pyrenees mix, and Pearl, their sweet cat baby.  Julie has had a varied career, mostly in nonprofit work with a concentration in hospitality where she worked as a professional chef for over 15 years.  Moving to central Virginia in 2018 was a big change for her, but also a change that has brought new and amazing opportunities into her life.  Most days you can find Julie working as the Volunteer Recruitment and Communications Coordinator with Innisfree Village, an amazing community of folks that has been like a second home for her. We're chatting with Alyse Dusseault, a Widow, Grief Coach, Psychic Medium, and Reiki and energy work Practitioner based in Nashville, TN. After the loss of her fiancé Jared in June 2020, she began connecting with him in spirit and this opened her up to her intuitive gifts, which allowed her to create a new language with him in spirit. Alyse opened her business, Intuitively Alyse, in January 2022 where she helps others in their healing journey through Reiki, mediumship, intuitive readings, and grief coaching. She is also the host of the Grief Awakening Podcast, which I've also had the pleasure of being a guest on in 2023 (linked below!). Alyse and I have a SUPER powerful and beautiful conversation about the loss of a partner, her mediumship journey, signs and symbols and how we can connect with our loved ones, and energetic and Reiki healing. I have personally witnessed her gift through a mini intuitive reading I did with Alyse, and it truly is so amazing to witness! This is such a unique conversation we haven't had on the podcast yet, and I'm so excited to hare it with you guys. Curiosity lets us navigate the world from a different perspective. * Like any other emotion, grief wants to be honored.
