In this episode of The Lean Builder's “Hoots on the Ground” podcast, host Adam Hoots introduces a group of guests who share their experiences and insights on Lean construction. Joining Brian Winningham and Julie Dolan this week are Manny Hoyo, a senior superintendent with Skanska USA, and Sam Sinclair, a field superintendent with E.L. Pruitt. As a fun icebreaker, Adam asks each guest to introduce themselves and share a type of food they do not like. Brian “Ranger Winnie” Winningham kicks off the discussion by reading his original story, Honey Wagon Driver. It's about respect for people and how oftentimes a person's role and value go unnoticed until that person is not there. This episode highlights the taboo nature of discussing mental health in the construction industry. Manny explains that openly addressing mental health or acknowledging when one is not feeling well is uncommon in the industry. He points out that there is a cultural expectation to leave emotions and feelings behind and give maximum effort every day. This mentality of suppressing emotions and prioritizing work over mental well-being can have detrimental effects on the mental health of construction workers. The episode emphasizes the need for awareness and kindness within the industry. It is mentioned that individuals who enter construction often come from diverse backgrounds and may have faced challenges in their lives. Creating a culture of kindness and understanding can support the mental health of these individuals and help combat the stigma surrounding mental health in the construction industry. Overall, the episode underscores the importance of recognizing and addressing mental health in the construction industry. It calls for a shift in the industry's culture to promote open discussions, awareness, and kindness. The speakers emphasize the significance of kindness and understanding starting from within oneself before extending it to others. They suggest that individuals must first find kindness within themselves to be kind and understanding towards others. The speaker challenges the industry to introspect and cultivate self-compassion, as they believe it is difficult to show kindness to others without finding it for oneself. By setting an example and understanding the reasons behind others' actions, individuals can create a more positive and compassionate work environment. The episode also discusses the importance of becoming mental health certified in the construction industry, comparing it to being First Aid and CPR certified. It highlights the need for individuals to possess the skills and knowledge to address mental health issues just as they would physical health emergencies. Manny mentions his company's green sticker program, where individuals can receive mental health certification training. This program involves wearing a sticker on their hard hat, like displaying First Aid and CPR certifications. The purpose of this certification is not to make individuals certified counselors but to equip them with the tools and resources to have conversations about mental health and direct people to appropriate support. Overall, the episode underscores the significance of finding the value that each member of the team can add to the project. Construction jobs are not built without the men and women who labor to make them happen. It's time to show them some respect. The episode ends with each person issuing a challenge to the construction industry! ABOUT HOOTS ON THE GROUND PODCAST: The Lean Builder's absolutely, positively NO Bullshido podcast. In this episode, Brian Winningham shares a poem that he wrote about life in the construction industry titled Temporary Fence Panels. In the poem, Brian captures perfectly what it's like to work on a construction project site. Before you know it, the day is gone, and you haven't even started your own personal work. Staying until late in the night, and then you realize a problem on the job site that you must solve before you can go home! The OG Lean Builder, Buddy Brumley, shares his own experience of working in the construction industry for a long time without succumbing to heart attacks, alcoholism, substance abuse, or divorce. This is seen as an anomaly, with the other speakers referring to him as a "unicorn." Buddy's story highlights the importance of self-care in a high-stress industry like construction, where many individuals may struggle with mental health issues and unhealthy coping mechanisms. Buddy discusses the challenges of finding time for self-care, particularly when work consumes a significant amount of time and energy. He admits to not having any hobbies and using his time off to recharge for the next week. However, he recognizes the need to hold himself accountable and make time for self-care, even if it means learning new ways of managing his schedule. The speakers also acknowledge the role of support from others in encouraging and reminding individuals to prioritize self-care. Overall, the episode emphasizes the significance of self-care in reducing stress levels and improving overall well-being. It highlights the challenges faced in prioritizing self-care in a demanding industry like construction, but also emphasizes the benefits that can be gained from making self-care a priority. The subject of mental health amongst trade workers needs to be talked about more. Depression, divorce, and suicide are at an all-time high. Jaret Warren has been in the line trade for almost 2 decades and like many in this trade he has suffered with his own mental health issues but unlike most, he was willing to sit down and talk about it. We need to do this more. We need to talk about this subject and we need to do all we can to help before we lose more amazing family, friends, and coworkers. Much love. In this episode, we discuss our experiences with the ancient desert plants Syrian Rue and Mimosa! Syrian Rue and Mimosa are said by some to be the plants that the Ancient Egyptians used ceremonially. Comparable with Ayahuasca, the DMT brew can last 5-8 hours and has a feminine essence. It also has its own uniqueness, many saying it is a gentler brew than Ayahuasca. On this weeks episode I discuss mental health. Like a lot of us, I hold mental health so close to my heart. My father and brother both have Schizophrenia and I fought my own battle with Harm OCD. I love that the conversation around mental health has been more openly discussed because I believe there is so much power in knowing that you are not alone. Schizophrenia and Harm OCD I believe both need more awareness. Ending the month of September: Suicide Awareness Month. While being an officer can be a rewarding job, it can be taxing on their. mental health. With calls that reflect on domestic violence, officer-involved shootings, and more as a regular part of the job, this leads to a higher rate of at least 25% of officers with suicidal ideations. What happens behind the scenes when the uniform comes off, they return home to their families & support systems? What mental health issues can occur with these men and women, that go unnoticed and often times not discussed. For anyone experiencing a mental health crisis, looking for addiction resources or just wanting to talk to someone on a bad day, there is a new number to call: 988. The three digit number has replaced the national number making it easier to remember and use when it's needed. This change happened in mid-July, but the previous crisis hotline will remain active. The Portland-based nonprofit Lines for Life is handling 988 calls for the majority of Oregon. To explain more on the rollout of the change and what's happening in the state we hear from Chief Clinical Officer of Lines for Life Greg Borders.

Rapper Coi Leray is criticized a lot for her musical style, body image, and simply staying true to herself. But now she's getting hate for simply being the daughter of Benzino (rapper, entrepreneur) & him allegedly opening doors for her in the music industry. If nepotism is widely practiced in every other culture to build and maintain generational wealth, why is frowned upon in the black community? If you or someone you love is experiencing a crisis, you can call the National Suicide Prevention Line at 1-800-273-8255; use the Crisis Text Line by texting NAMI to 741-741 to connect with a trained crisis counselor for free, 24/7 crisis support via text message; or call the NAMI Helpline at 1-800-950-NAMI (6264) M–F, 7 a.m.–3 p.m. PT for free mental health info, referrals and support.Subscribe to the visuals of the Venchie Talks Podcast on Youtube : https://bit.ly/VenchieTalksPodcast

I told him that would work, but I started online at VA.gov.It took me a long time to finally do it. I think I just didn't want to go through any bs. But it turned out to be the best decision. Not only did I get help for some of the problems I was having, but they eventually got me the surgery I needed to walk. Of course, there is always set backs and hiccups. On this episode Anthony Jay and Chantel are joined by mental health professional Erica Poe, LGSW in a discussion about disenfranchised grief. According to WebMD, disenfranchised grief is when your grieving doesn't fit in with your larger society's attitude about dealing with death and loss, thus minimizing or not acknowledging that the grief does indeed exist. The lessons are bountiful as the teachers discuss the many ways grief has shown up in their lives and how they analyze and cope with accepting grief. I cut some clones from the mother plant the other day and so far, all are doing okay. With the onset of summer, we have a much better nighttime temp that is allowing for some amazing growth spurts. Fingers crossed, I may get my first 7- or 8-footer! Exciting for me. With all the good growth and the clones, I have decided to flip 2 of these girls early. What that means is in a few days I will start to put them in darkness for 12 hours. This will kick in the flowering phase, and we will get an early harvest from 2 plants. The original Harvest from 2 plants and the last harvest from the latest seedlings. I will feature this in the Vodcast of this episode.
