Send us a Text Message.Today's episode talks about just how common injuries in dance are, with 86% of dancers experiencing one or more injuries in their career. We also debunk the traditional injury protocol of RICE (Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation) that is now being challenged as it can prolong the healing process and hinder recovery. A new approach called PEACE (Protect, Elevate, Avoid anti-inflammatory substances, Compression, Educate) and LOVE (Load, Optimism, Vascularization, Exercise) is being advocated, focusing on protecting the injured area, promoting fluid movement, avoiding anti-inflammatory measures, providing compression or massage, and educating oneself about the body. Injuries in dance are not just physical but also have psychological and emotional components that need to be addressed; mental stress can manifest as physical tension and affect performance. Integrating the physical, mental, and emotional aspects of dance is crucial for injury prevention and recovery. Dance programs and institutions need to prioritize the holistic well-being of dancers and provide resources for physical and mental health support.Note: When Eileen discusses "beliefs" during this episode, she is referring specifically to embodied beliefs (not just the conscious beliefs we hold, but the energetic beliefs our body has somatically developed).  Resources / Studies / Articles / References:R.I.C.E. It is officially Episode 12, our Season 1 Finale. What an incredible journey it has been. In this episode, Eileen and Amy discuss some themes they weren't able to cover in Episode 9 that came up in their conversation with Jonathan Kim (they even include a clip they weren't able to include in that week's episode because it would have been way too long). They also get to ask some questions they had wanted to ask each other in previous episodes and they expand on their personal and professional relationship. Their conversation emphasizes the importance of authenticity in dance and the need for dancers to embrace their natural skill sets; discussing the need for individuality in choreography and the importance of allowing dancers to bring their unique artistry to the performance. They explore the importance of collaboration, integration, and empowerment within the dance industry, taking a moment to highlight the various roles that have been compartmentalized and the need for creative alignment and collaborative co-creation. Their conversation also addresses the dehumanization of dancers and the need for equity and value in the industry; emphasizing the importance of creating safe spaces for dancers to advocate for themselves and express their needs. Finally, Eileen and Amy discuss Amy's transition into the role of Artistic Director of TwoPoint4 Dance and the challenges she faced surrounding her edge of growth as well as Eileen's edge of growth in the somatic work she's bringing into the dance world. They share their motivations and how they have changed, focusing more on authenticity and less on external validation; as well as the importance of boundaries and self-acceptance. Be sure to listen to hear what they are leaving behind and what they're taking with them. Thank you for an incredible first season! She has received her AA, BA, and MFA in Dance as well as certifications in Acrobatic Arts, Function Range Conditioning and is working toward her certification in Bodymind Dancing. Amy has followed her heart and instincts over her 20 year career into a vast and wide ranging assortment of dance techniques and jobs, including ballroom, dance science, ballet, modern, teacher, model, assistant, speaker, scholar, director, faculty, pole dancing, aerial work, commercial dance, somatic based movement practices, and so many others. The accumulation of knowledge in all of these different styles of dance has brought her to the conclusion that most dance techniques that would be considered very different are actually rooted in the same principles and foundations. He touches on how it is so important to reflect and break yourself open to ask yourself the tough questions. This conversation really felt like a warm and snuggly way to invite change into spaces that are absent of possibility and curiosity.*Please note: this interview was almost 2 hours in length so we ended up taking a few sections out and will be airing them in Episode 12 when Eileen + Amy expand on Episodes 9/10/11 (Episode 12 drops 12/18).Jonathan (he / him) is a dance artist and full time company member with Repertory Dance Theatre in Salt Lake City, Utah. Highlights include, but are not limited to, works by: José Limón, Michio Ito, Donald McKayle, Ihsan Rustem, Shane Urton, Kate Skarpetowska, Mitsu Salmon, and Noa Zuk and Ohad Fishof. There is a moment that Tony shares his tears with us as he reflects on something his mentor shared with him recently and we discuss the presence of stereotypical masculine and feminine expectations that have been present for him in the studio. Tony (he / him) received his Bachelor's degree in Dance from CSU Sacramento and has since performed with various companies in the Bay Area and internationally. Tony has worked with the likes of Randee Paufve, Joe Goode Performance Group, and East to West Dance Collective, as well as toured with Bandaloop across the United States, Asia, and Africa. He has also served as the assistant artistic director for Red Bucket Dance Theater from 2011 to 2013, and is currently the executive director, choreographer, and sometimes dancer for TwoPoint4 Dance Theatre, where he uses collaboration to create performances that challenge viewers on social, political, and personal issues. In 2019, Tony received the audience choice award at PUSHfest in San Francisco. In addition to his work in dance, Tony is also a professional photographer and enjoys exploring new ways to change the way performances are viewed in Sacramento. Guest: Kristen Brooks SandlerDirector, Choreographer, CreatrixFounder & Artistic Director of Thistle DanceToday marks our first interview episode with an incredible guest who challenges what sustainable, collaborative, inclusive, consent-based work can look like. Not only does she share how she holds space for both the person and the artist but the collaborative framework she believes (and we do too) has the power to make a bigger impact on our industry at large if we all chose to meet each other with more transparent authenticity.Kristen (she / her) is an award winning director and choreographer whose work can be seen on screen and stage. Purple haired & proudly queer, she is committed to physical storytelling, believing in movement as the language that bridges the gap between audience and artistry. On stage, she has directed & choreographed musicals, immersive work and original dance creations at regional & international theaters. Her screen credits include work on set with Nickelodeon and Hallmark, & her films have been featured in festivals in over 30 countries. Her first original creation, won Best Dance and Physical Theater at the Capital Fringe Festival, and she has since been nominated for many awards, including a New York Innovative Theater Award for Best Choreography. Her company, Thistle Dance, uses movement as the primary language to conjure wonderfully strange creations challenging our codified perception of history and lore. The company is currently in their second year of creating the immersive experience “UNBOUND” in partnership with the New York Public Library, opening in October. Before leading her own rehearsal rooms, Kristen worked as a performer alongside such creators as Andy Blankenbuehler, Savion Glover, Karma Camp & Connor Gallagher. Follow & Learn More:IG: @kristenbrooks19 & @thistle_danceWebsite: https://www.kristenbrookssandler.com/ & https://www.thistledanceinc.com/RSVP for your FREE tickets to "The Art of Sin" at the Jefferson Market Library running 3 shows per night Friday October 13th / 20th / 27th: https://www.thistledanceinc.com/tickets Support the Show.M.O.V.E. with Eileen + Amy is a Kaia Evolutions Podcast.New episodes air on Wednesdays when in season. To learn more about Eileen + Amy, be sure to follow them on instagram at @ekielty + @amyreah and keep up to date on the podcast at @movewitheileenandamy. Welcome to the first episode of M.O.V.E. with Eileen + Amy. In our debut episode we introduce ourselves, we laugh a lot and we get serious about where the idea for this podcast came from and where we're headed. Eileen talks about her journey to this podcast and we briefly touch on the injuries and thresholds of her life that created a “not-so-talked about” path in her dance career. We talk about how we met, and how we met again and how Amy was there for Eileen during a time of crisis, revealing both of our commitments to being truth tellers. Thank you for coming along for this ride. We are so happy you are here. Please enjoy our first episode of M.O.V.E. with Eileen + Amy. Support the Show.M.O.V.E. with Eileen + Amy is a Kaia Evolutions Podcast.New episodes air on Wednesdays when in season. To learn more about Eileen + Amy, be sure to follow them on instagram at @ekielty + @amyreah and keep up to date on the podcast at @movewitheileenandamy.
