This week on 'Has It Aged Well?' we're talking about the breakout film of Shah Rukh Khan, and also the one that set him on a trail of playing iconic negative characters: 1993's 'Baazigar' directed by Abbas-Mustan starring SRK, Kajol, Shilpa Shetty, Dalip Tahil, Johnny Lever, and Rakhee. Joining us to talk about Baazigar with Abbas and Urjita is writer, comedian and 90's cinema enthusiast Ashish Shakya. Topics discussed include: Shah Rukh Khan's turn to negative roles and how it brought him success, the filmmaking flair and dialogue-baazi of Abbas-Mustan films, Ashish sharing stories about a Shilpa Shetty birthday bash and SRk's magnetism, how Anu Malik knocked it out of the park, Johnny Lever's crazy side track, and how a 2024 Baazigar would jsut be a series of insta reels.Follow Ashish Shakya here: https://www.instagram.com/ashish_shakyaUrjita is touring with her solo show across India, catch her in your city: https://in.bookmyshow.com/events/urjita-wani-live/ET00395374Follow Abbas here: https://www.instagram.com/abbasmomin88/Follow Urjita here: https://www.instagram.com/urjitawani/Get access to ‘Has It Aged Well?' audio episodes one week early on Amazon Music, Subscribe to the feed: https://music.amazon.in/podcasts/24d527b5-0544-4bd6-a7ff-073fa72d846a/has-it-aged-wellSubscribe to IVM Pop's Youtube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/@IVMPopFollow IVM Pop on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/ivmpop/ See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

There is no beating down Shah Rukh Khan! In the latest turning point to a career as dramatic as his films, the “King of Bollywood” is back at the top with two runaway hits-Pathan and Jawan. SRK has built a billion-dollar career out of romancing women on screen. But people close to him, know him as a sports, video game and action freak. Naturally, the 57-year-old actor is having copious amounts of fun in his new high-octane action-hero avatar. And so is the audience: the two films together have already crossed a business of Rs 1,500 crore. The twin successes come after a string of flops, a five-year hiatus and deep personal turmoil after the arrest of his son. For the Hindi film industry that has been in a “Kabhi Khushi, Kabhi Gham” phase itself, this level of excitement has come after years. In this episode, we try to decode why Brand SRK keeps enduring. Is he truly “the last of the stars?” Host Dia Rekhi explores with Anupama Chopra, Founder and Editor of Film Companion, Komal Nahta, Film Trade Analyst, Harish Bijoor, Business and Brand Strategy Specialist. Often at work, when I would get bored, I would press CMD-Tab on my Mac and head off to drown myself in the joys of the internet. Movie reviews on Rediff.com, Sports writing on Cricinfo, and funny videos and trailers on Youtube. (Of course I was doing all this to learn the art of storytelling). And on Youtube, while I would watch videos by a variety of creators, perhaps the group that I enjoyed the most was All India Bakchod (or AIB). For the uninitiated, AIB was a comedy collective which created funny sketches and videos on a variety of topics. Some of their well-known series included: - The Honest series - a seriously funny take on all experiences from restaurants to flights to engineering campus placements to the Big Fat Indian Wedding- The Bollywood spoofs: Check out the viral one with Alia Bhatt, or their work with Irrfan- Political satire: the biting one on the news media or the one on electionsIt's really good stuff. I found the quality of their storytelling so good that I don't think I've missed ANY of their sketches (yep, I even liked the Pista one).I also liked the fact that AIB would always respect its writers and prominently credit them in their videos (often getting these reticent creators to appear at the end to ask for the mandatory subscribes and likes). One such writer I noticed in some of those videos was a shy, nerdy looking guy called Devaiah Bopanna. I realised later that he was the Head Writer there.Cut to - a few years later - I came across some funny posts by Devaiah on an unlikely platform - LinkedIn! And I also learnt that he - along with some AIB stalwarts like Tanmay, Nupur, Vishal, Puneet - have been responsible for the crazy viral CRED ads - including the one featuring Rahul Dravid as Indiranagar ka gunda and Javagal Srinath and Venkatesh Prasad as members of a boy band. And then I decided that I need to get Devaiah on my podcast to get his take on the craft of storytelling. It took some time, but I'm glad that I persisted.Devaiah is a multifaceted and thoughtful creator. During the conversation he talks about:- His curiosity being his biggest learning driver- Why he would think extra hard about the opening in a story- How AIB made its stories surprising yet familiar- The parts of storytelling where he personally struggles withIt's a fun, insightful conversation. Enjoy!A small note before we begin: There are parts where Devaiah uses some fairly colourful language. Since this is a show for adults, I've chosen to keep them in. But please be mindful in case you are listening with young folks around.Further links:Devaiah Bopanna on LinkedIn and Twitter

Rohan Joshi, aka mojorojo, is one of India's most recognizable faces in the alternative culture space. He is best known for being a stand-up comic who co-founded the popular collective AIB. Having followed his work (and Instagram) for years, I've found him to be thoughtful, well-read and empathetic, and his interests wide-ranging. He made for an ideal guest for this show. I also owe the idea of this show to him - as will be revealed in the episode. All India Bakchod.

This week, Abhinandan Sekhri joins Deepanjana Pal on the podcast, which means we need to preface this with an advisory: some of the language this time is, ummm, strictly PG-16. Find out what Pal has to say about the criticism that some feminists had for Dangal and Sekhri's favourite film of the year. Find out which was the greatest movie of 2016, according to our duo. Sekhri has a lot to say about Priyanka Jagga's exit from Bigg Boss. And then we have the trailer of Blade Runner 2049, ad campaigns by Pampers and Dainik Bhaskar, and All India Bakchod's high hopes for 2017 as detailed in "Peeke Mat Chala". All this and more, discussed and dissected, for your listening pleasure. Did your last week go by watching uber patriotic videos that made your chest swell up to 56-inch with pride and nationalism and drove you out on the streets to celebrate the Independence Day? No, right? It went pretty much the same for Deepanjana Pal and Rajyasree Sen. In this episode, listen to them talk about the videos which did the rounds on the internet giving the occasion of Independence Day their own zing- the funny Kangana Ranaut starring 'Love Your Country' music video, a colonially hungover sketch by All India Bakchod and how can we forego Kangana playing Goddess Lakshmi in a Swachh Bharat campaign video. They also discuss Akshay Kumar-starrer Rustom, the trailer of the upcoming Amitabh Bachchan-starrer Pink, the rubber crocodile in Mohenjo Daro and the new snazzy trailer Ranveer Ching Returns among other things. And oh, we have a cool quiz for you in the end as well. This week we explore the role of comedy in civic participation within the Indian context. Rohan Joshi is part of the sketch comedy group All India Backhod, which tackles political and social issues on their YouTube channel. A notable example was their viral video “It’s your fault” that dealt with the issue of rape, focusing on the irony of victim-blaming. Joshi recently spoke at the "The Past, Present and Future of Civic Entertainment in India" a day-long event in Mumbai. We bring you some of his insights (courtesy of Godrej India Culture Lab) that day, on what Indian audiences could learn from Captain America on “when to stop being a good citizen, and become a good person.”

This week, we bring you our conversation with Supriya Joshi, a stand up comedian and writer who’s worked extensively with All India Bakchod. Supriya enlightened us on what it means to be at the forefront of both the feminist movement as well as the change happening in the comedy circles in India today. And as you can imagine, we shared a lot of giggles along the way and hope you enjoy listening to the three of us as much as we enjoyed recording this episode. Shocking! Bollywood Diva goes all out to make some unjustifiable demands, in AIB’s version of a bollywood dance number.
Over the last few years, the quality of AIB's video production and writing has gone through the roof (although, YouTube comments superstars will lead you to think otherwise). And that is in no small part thanks to one of their head writers, Girish Narayandass. He's been the brains behind several of their sketches (including the epic Honest Campus Placements trilogy). In this interview, we talk about his career, how he got into AIB, what the process of writing a sketch typically is like - and all the hard parts of what is perceived as a super-fun job (it is!). This week,Abhinandan Sekhri joins Deepanjana Pal on the podcast, which means we need to preface this with an advisory: some of the language this time is, ummm, strictly PG-16. Find out what Pal has to say about the criticism that some feminists had for Dangal and Sekhri's favourite film of the year. Find out which was the greatest movie of 2016, according to our duo. Sekhri has a lot to say about Priyanka Jagga's exit from Bigg Boss. And then we have the trailer of Blade Runner 2049, ad campaigns by Pampers and Dainik Bhaskar, and All India Bakchod’s high hopes for 2017 as detailed in "Peeke Mat Chala".
