To kick off the new year, we recently had the privilege to speak to academic duo and long-time friends, Adam Miller and Rosalynde Welch about the new book they co-authored together, titled Seven Gospels: The Many Lives of Christ in the Book of Mormon. Their book examines the many ways that Christ shows up in the lives of individuals in the Book of Mormon, including Nephi, Abinadi, Abish, and others. Like the New Testament gospels, these distinct witnesses both affirm and challenge each other, showing how Christ's message for each of us intimately reflects our personal questions and circumstances.This episode not only guides us through these distinct witnesses but also describes the close reading process that allowed Adam and Rosalynde to observe such differentiation in the first place. By slowing down with the scriptures and zooming in on details—even supposedly mundane ones like punctuation and phrasing—scripture can teach us things we don't expect to learn. Just as there are a multiplicity of witnesses of Christ in the Book of Mormon, Adam and Rosalynde make a case that our scriptural canon is a springboard to endless interpretations that speak to us according to our spiritual needs.For those who don't yet know these two, Adam is a professor of philosophy at Collin College, and Rosalynde is the Associate Director and Research Fellow at the Neal A. Maxwell Institute. Adam and Rosalynde are two of the brightest minds in Latter-day Saint studies, so to have them team up on a book is a special privilege, and we loved talking with them, as we always do.

One, ushering the last words of a beloved friend through to publication after the friend's passing, and the other, an exploration of words written in holy scripture two millennia ago. The Leading Saints Women's Retreat food planning has been very exciting.  I am a certified health coach and I recognize the value of having yummy healthy food.  It helps us think, process and feel good.  All reasons to eat well during a retreat where we have much to accomplish.In listening to the story again of Alma the Younger having the experience of being converted and then totally changing what he talked about and preached I started to ponder on what he might have misunderstood about the gospel of Jesus Christ before the angel appeared to him.We look at stories of Abish, Nephi and Ammon as well to see how they were misunderstood and I give you steps to take so that you have better chances of being understood and also of better understanding others.

This week, Brother Jones and Brother Knox of Beyond the Block invited us to be guests on their Come Follow Me podcast as we talked about Alma 17-22. In a discussion of queer love, allyship, leveraging privilege, and the powerfully transgressive friendship of Abish and Queen Lamoni--this episode does not disappoint! This week Daniel and Fili discuss the beginning of the missions of the sons of Mosiah, the conversion of many important Lamanite leaders, the influence of Abish as a faithful believer, and the impact of serving and caring for those around us.

Shiloh and Ben discuss the journeys of the sons of Mosiah as they take the message of the gospel of Jesus Christ to the Lamanites. They discuss the myth of cosmology in how it relates to establishing authority, and how this may have been a familiar tool and understanding to convince King Lamoni of the incorrect traditions of his fathers. Both Ben and Shiloh want to know more about Abish, and Shiloh resolves to ask Mormon (at some point in eternity) why we have so much about geography and Nephite coinage in the Book of Mormon but we're left wanting to know more about Abish and the Zion-type people in 4th Nephi. King Lamoni and his household, as well as Lamoni's father and his household, tastes of the love of God, as it is the love of God that leads to conversion.

Ammon served a mission to the Lamanites, and before he does any teaching, he does a whole lot of service. He uses his priesthood power to bless the house of Lamoni, and the king takes notice. He becomes converted and Abish spreads the word to the wider population. She bravely adds her testimony to Lamoni's, the queen's, Ammon's and all the servants' and many Lamanites are baptized!
