Dan and Ellen talk with Carlene Hempel and Harrison Zuritsky. Carlene, a journalism professor at Northeastern, recently led a reporting trip to Flint, Michigan. Harrison and other students produced a stunning internet magazine called Flint Unfiltered that takes a deep dive into the causes and effects of Flint's economic downturn and toxic water crisis. Since 2009, Carlene has been leading students on reporting trips, where they work as part of a traveling press corps. She has taken groups to many countries, including Egypt, Syria, Cuba and Panama. Harrison, a second-year student with concentrations in journalism and data science, joined her on the Flint trip. Like so many at Northeastern, Carlene has a background that includes academic achievement as well as wide-ranging professional experience. She has been a professor for 20 years and holds a PhD from Northeastern. She also started her career writing for The Middlesex News in Framingham, now The MetroWest Daily News, and The Boston Globe. She then moved to North Carolina, where she worked for MSNBC and The Raleigh News & Observer. Dan has Quick Take from Maine. The former owner of the Portland Press Herald is going to have three of his weekly papers printed at the Press Herald's facility in South Portland, giving a boost to the National Trust for Local News. And he's also followed through on a plan to open a café at one of his weeklies in a unique effort to boost civic engagement. Ellen weighs in on a new study of local news by our friend of the pod, Professor Joshua Darr at Syracuse University. Darr teamed up with three other researchers to do a meta analysis of surveys on media trust. They made a number of findings, but the headline is that Americans trust local newsrooms more than national news outlets. This is especially true if the local news outlet has the actual name of the community in its title. But there's a downside: that automatic trust also allows pink slime sites to take hold.

How should we treat our one and only home, Earth? What obligations do we have to other living or non-living things? How should we think about climate change and its denial? How does biodiversity and species extinction impact human beings? And how should we think about environmental justice, the rights of animals, and the ways we consume the natural world? In this episode, Ryan McAnnally-Linz welcomes Ryan Darr (Assistant Professor, Yale Divinity School) to reflect on some of the most pressing issues in environmental ethics and consider them through philosophical, ecological, and theological frameworks.Together they discuss:What and who matters in environmental ethics: Only humans? Only sentient animals? Every life form? The inorganic natural world? The significance and difference between global and individual scale of climate issuesThe ethics of climate change denialEnvironmental justice and moral obligations to the environment—the question of what we owe to animals and the rest of the natural worldThe importance of biodiversity and the impact of species loss and extinctionThe ethics of eating animalsThe problems with human consumption of the natural worldAnd the impact of cultivating a wider moral imagination of our ecological futureAbout Ryan DarrRyan Darr Ryan Darr is Assistant Professor of Religion, Ethics, and Environment at Yale Divinity School. His research interests include environmental ethics, multispecies justice, structural injustice, ethical theory, and the history of religious and philosophical ethics. He is currently writing a book that defends an account of environmental and multispecies justice as a framework for thinking ethically about the crisis of biodiversity loss and mass extinction. He is also developing an ongoing research project exploring the relationship between individual agency and responsibility and structural justice and injustice with a particular focus on environmental and climate issues. His first book, The Best Effect: Theology and the Origins of Consequentialism, was published by the University of Chicago Press in 2023. The book offers a new, robustly theological story of the origin of consequentialism, one of the most influential views in modern moral theory. It uses the new historical account to intervene in contemporary ethical debates about consequentialism and about how ethicists conceive of goods, ends, agency, and causality.Prior to joining the YDS faculty, Ryan held postdoctoral fellowships at the Princeton University Center for Human Values (2019-22) and the Yale Institute of Sacred Music (2022-24).Show NotesGet your copy of Ryan Darr's The Best Effect: Theology and the Origins of ConsequentialismComplex ethical questions about climate changeEnmeshed in environmental systemsA crash course in environmental ethicsWhich entities should we be thinking about ethically? Are human beings the most important morally and ethically speaking? What about animals, plants, or other kinds of life? What about other species of animalsAnthropocentrism: Only humans matter.Sentientism: Only sentient animals matterBiocentrism: Every life form mattersCan we apply justice and rights to animals? The polar bear on melting ice was the poster child for climate change; but this was a mistake because the effects on human beings is massive.“All of us are affected.”“We're all vulnerable to climate change. …. kidding themselves and need to think more about this.”Global southClimate negotiations: Who needs to lower emissions and how? Laurie McGraw is speaking with Inspiring Woman Rebecca Darr, CEO of Wings, the largest organization in Illinois focused on breaking the cycle of domestic violence. Wings provides housing, integrated services, education and advocacy to end domestic violence with tremendous success when people seek help. October is Domestic Violence Awareness month. The definition of domestic violence is the willful intimidation, physical assault, battery, sexual assault, and/or other abusive behavior as part of a systematic pattern of power and control perpetrated by one intimate partner against another. And you may be surprised to know how prevalent it is. Every minute 24 people are victims of rape, physical violence or stalking by an intimate partner in the United States. That's over 12 million people every year. In Chicago alone, the police receive 500 calls per day regarding domestic violence. Further, over 1 in 3 women (35.6%) and 1 in 4 men (28.5%) in the US have experienced rape, physical violence, and/or stalking by an intimate partner in their lifetime. Domestic violence does not discriminate and begins with a power imbalance. Rebecca discusses the stark reality of what it means to get out of an abusive situation and then how Wings can help. Rebecca has been doing this work for decades and became CEO of Wings in 2014. When people come to Wings for help – they receive it. Housing, counseling, and more. This Inspiring Woman discussion with Rebecca is filled with hard to hear statistics, very real human stories and an inspiring message of hope. Breaking the domestic violence cycle is the objective and after all of these years, Rebecca remains committed to expanding the programs and impact at Wings. About Rebecca: Rebecca Darr is a tireless advocate for families confronting domestic violence. Darr was named CEO of WINGS in 2014, after serving as the agency's executive director for 15 years. Under Darr's leadership, WINGS has dramatically increased its ability to serve the needs of families in crisis because of domestic violence. The agency has tripled in size and secured new funding sources, including three resale stores that generate revenue to support WINGS' programs. Darr led the WINGS team in building the first domestic violence shelter in Chicago's northwest suburbs in 2005. This shelter has since helped thousands of women and children move from abuse to freedom. She also played a key role in the 2016 opening of the WINGS Metro shelter on Chicago's southwest side. Darr is closely involved with numerous organizations and task forces committed to leading the fight to enact stronger legislation and to secure increased resources to combat domestic violence. These include the Cook County Commission on Women's Issues, the Illinois Coalition Against Domestic Violence, and the Northwest Suburban Alliance on Domestic Violence. Darr is a sought-after speaker and expert on domestic violence issues and on programs that can break the cycle in families. Afsnit 611 Sami Darr.

I recently had the pleasure of chatting with Marshall Darr, co-founder and CEO of Stretch Dollar. As a former VP of Marketing and someone with over a decade of experience in the health insurance space, Marshall has an insightful perspective on the challenges small business owners face when it comes to providing quality, affordable benefits. In our conversation, he shared Stretch Dollar's origin story - how his own frustrations trying to find decent coverage for his distributed team sparked the idea for a flexible new approach. The way it works is simple: employers contribute tax-free dollars that employees then use to shop for and purchase their own plans, with guidance from Stretch's brokerage team. Marshall explains how this model gives people more choice and control while saving employers tons of administrative headaches. I found the interview super valuable and think you will too. Marshall offers tangible tips for streamlining benefits management and making sure employees get coverage that actually meets their needs. And I love how passionate he is about supporting entrepreneurs and small business owners specifically. So if you want to hear his best insights on navigating the regulatory landscape and optimizing health benefits compliance, don't miss this episode! For parents expecting a newborn, their top priority is bringing a healthy baby into this world. But it's not just their responsibility while their baby is in the womb. As newborns, important screenings are changing health outcomes. Over 98% of U.S. newborns are screened for hearing loss and about 6,000 U.S. infants born are identified early with a permanent hearing loss. In all 50 states and Washington D.C., there are newborn screening laws to make sure these tests happen. Experts say they are crucial to keep at the forefront of newborn care. It's doctors like Owen Darr, MD, whose passion is helping these kids live the best life possible. “Working with families, helping them through a difficult time, finding interventions –– sometimes small, sometimes big –– that can really make a positive impact on a child's life,” Dr. Darr says. In today's episode, we are joined by Dr. Darr and Kristin Uhler, PhD. Dr. Darr specializes in otolaryngology at Children's Hospital Colorado. He is also an assistant professor of otolaryngology, head and neck surgery. Dr. Uhler is an audiologist at Children's Colorado, as well as an associate professor of physical medicine and rehabilitation. Dr. Uhler explains that 1998 was the year experts provided the efficacy for newborn screening. “Where they realized if you screen a baby by 1 month of age, you then rescreen them at and diagnose them with either hearing loss or normal hearing by 3 months of age, and then enroll them in early intervention by 6 months of age, that they have language on par with their typical hearing peers by preschool,” Dr. Uhler Says. Some highlights from this episode include: Why we screen newborns and what we are screening for Sensitivity and specificity of the hearing test Intervention options to help children with hearing loss When physicians should refer kids for a hearing test Today's episode is underwritten by The Daniels Fund, a proud supporter of Charting Pediatrics and Children's Colorado. Cable television pioneer Bill Daniels suffered hearing loss traced to his service as a decorated fighter pilot in World War II. His hearing loss increased over the years, and even the most advanced treatments available at that time provided only a limited increase in his range of hearing. His experience formed a strong catalyst for the Daniel's Fund gift to Children's Colorado for the Bill Daniels Center for Children's Hearing. Thank you to The Daniels Fund for your continued investment in Children's Hospital Colorado. For more information on Children's Colorado, visit: childrenscolorado.org
