Caitanya Mahāprabhu's leading Lord Jagannātha toward the Guṇḍicā temple corresponded to Śrīmatī Rādhārāṇī's leading Kṛṣṇa toward Vṛndāvana. Śrī Kṣetra, Jagannātha Purī, was taken as the kingdom of Dvārakā, the place where Kṛṣṇa enjoys supreme opulence. But He was being led by Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu to Vṛndāvana, the simple village where all the inhabitants are filled with ecstatic love for Kṛṣṇa. Śrī Kṣetra is a place of aiśvarya-līlā, just as Vṛndāvana is the place of mādhurya-līlā. Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu's following at the rear of the ratha indicated that Lord Jagannātha, Kṛṣṇa, was forgetting the inhabitants of Vṛndāvana. Although Kṛṣṇa neglected the inhabitants of Vṛndāvana, He could not forget them. Thus in His opulent Ratha-yātrā, He was returning to Vṛndāvana. In the role of Śrīmatī Rādhārāṇī, Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu was examining whether the Lord still remembered the inhabitants of Vṛndāvana. When Caitanya Mahāprabhu fell behind the Ratha car, Jagannātha-deva, Kṛṣṇa Himself, understood the mind of Śrīmatī Rādhārāṇī. Therefore, Jagannātha sometimes fell behind the dancing Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu to indicate to Śrīmatī Rādhārāṇī that He had not forgotten. Thus Lord Jagannātha would stop the forward march of the ratha and wait at a standstill. In this way Lord Jagannātha agreed that without the ecstasy of Śrīmatī Rādhārāṇī He could not feel satisfied. While Jagannātha was thus waiting, Gaurasundara, Caitanya Mahāprabhu, in His ecstasy of Śrīmatī Rādhārāṇī, immediately came forward to Kṛṣṇa. At such times, Lord Jagannātha would proceed ahead very slowly. These competitive exchanges were all part of the love affair between Kṛṣṇa and Śrīmatī Rādhārāṇī. We are in the stage of preparation for Rathayātrā. What's more, using this lifetime to enter into the mood of Kṛṣṇa consciousness as given to us by Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu. Kṛṣṇa is coming to experience the highest mode of worshiping Himself, as taught by Śrīmatī Rādhārāṇī. The reading that I'll be doing today is from the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam, canto 10, chapter 82. One may ask, what does this have to do with Rathayātrā? The answer is that this is the origin of Rathayātrā. Rathayātrā is the coming together of Kṛṣṇa and the inhabitants of Vṛndāvana, after over 100 years of separation. As we know, Kṛṣṇa left Vṛndāvana and said he would soon be back, and that left the residents of Vṛndāvana pining for Him for over 100 years without stoppage. And then there was finally an opportunity to meet at Kurukṣetra because, on the pretense of going there for a religious ceremony, Kṛṣṇa took all of His soldiers, and people came from all over the universe to see Kṛṣṇa there. What an opportunity to meet Him there! When the residents of Vṛndāvana found out about it, they also loaded up their wagons and they came to Kurukṣetra. So we'll read this chapter. We'll see if we can get through the whole thing in an hour, and then there is a parallel chapter in the Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Madhya-līlā, which is about the Lord's dancing at Rathayātrā. Now, Caitanya Mahāprabhu is reenacting this pastime from the 82nd chapter of the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam when He dances at Rathayātrā. For us to know the inside mood of Rathayātrā means that when we see Lord Jagannātha, pull the cart, and do sevā for Lord Jagannātha, we'll be able to remember Him in this context. These animals grazed on succulent buffalo and grama grass, drank from the local creeks and rivers, and wallowed in the hard-packed alkaline soil to lick salt from the ground. While Native Americans historically relied on these massive herds for food and clothing, they were not the only ones who hunted them. By the 1840s, the American Fur Company was purchasing thousands of buffalo robes annually. As more people entered the region following the 1859 gold strike at Cherry Creek, frontier merchants like Charles Rath arrived to establish trading contacts with the Southern Cheyenne, Kiowa, and Northern Comanche bands. Rath even strengthened these alliances by marrying a Cheyenne woman in 1860, the same year he took over a trading post on Walnut Creek following a deadly clash between the Kiowa tribe and the post's former owner, George Peacock.As the decade progressed, tensions escalated between Native Americans and white settlers, leading to multiple raids on Rath's Walnut Creek trading post despite his efforts to maintain peace. For his own safety, his Cheyenne wife eventually convinced him to divorce her. Meanwhile, the expansion of the Butterfield Overland Dispatch freight service and the arrival of the railroad transformed the region's landscape. The military established several forts to secure the area, including Fort Fletcher (later known as Fort Hays). The rapid construction of the railroads brought in thousands of settlers and specialized construction crews, who were fed by professional buffalo hunters. Skilled marksmen, including Jim White, Tom Nixon, AC Myer, and Josiah Wright Moore, were hired by the railroad to hunt the animals. When the ship finally docks in New York, the city greets them with a cacophony of shouts and clanging streetcars. At Castle Garden, the registry lines snake endlessly, the air thick with sweat and hope. Amid the chaos, Hendricks witnesses the shattering grief of a fellow Swede as her child slips away, a stark counterpoint to the feverish promise of America. Luggage in hand, tickets clutched tightly, the immigrants press onward, propelled by dreams and the memory of loss.The journey westward unfolds in a haze of cinders and dust, the train to St. Louis rattling through endless prairie. At the Hotel Missouri, its velvet drapes and polished brass promising a brief respite, Hendricks and his cousin are swiftly disabused of any illusions. The hotel staff, unsmiling and efficient, seize Hendricks's treasured silver watch and the last of their Swedish coins to settle a mysterious charge, leaving the cousins adrift and penniless in a foreign city. Words fail them; the language barrier is a wall as solid as any fortress. Salvation arrives in the form of a young man with quick eyes and fluent English, who shepherds them through the labyrinthine station to their next train. In Kansas City, a crude map points the way to Osage City—one hundred miles of uncertainty. With only a handful of biscuits, they trudge the tracks, sleeping rough in a freight car, hunger and exhaustion their constant companions, until at last they find Anders Person, the cousin who is both anchor and promise of belonging.Osage City thrums with the clang of hammers and the hiss of steam, coal dust settling on every surface. Hendricks labors first in the fields, his hands blistered by unfamiliar tools, before joining the crews laying track for the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe. Under the watchful eye of Charles Rath, the work is relentless, the men bound together by sweat and necessity. Nights bring their own dangers: a sudden raid strips Hendricks of his mule team, the hoofbeats fading into darkness, and Rath must supply replacements. There are moments of levity, too—a chance meeting with Bat Masterson, whose reputation precedes him even in these raw settlements. When winter's chill halts the rails, Hendricks returns to Dodge City, where two seasoned plainsmen beckon him south, across the wild sweep of prairie beyond the Arkansas River. In this episode of the ZenRUN Podcast, I chat with the wonderful Suzanne Rath - Irish farm girl, physio, business owner, leadership coach, trail runner, adventure collector, and someone who seems to casually say yes to things like cycling across South America, running from Sydney to Newcastle, and possibly signing up for Delirious WEST. As you do. Suzanne grew up on a farm in Wexford, Ireland, where resilience, self-reliance, and a “how hard can it be?” attitude were basically part of daily life. Suzanne plans her week around the things that matter - including training, adventure, family, and recovery - rather than waiting to “find time” later. Don't rely on motivation. As Suzanne says, if she waited until she felt motivated, she might never run again. Make it easier to start instead. Have something to aim for. It doesn't have to be a huge event. It can be a small goal, a race, a trail, an adventure, or simply something that gives your running a little spark. Stay connected when you're injured. If you can't run, don't disappear. Go to breakfast. Cheer people on. Stay part of the running community. Remember what a privilege it is. Even when it's hard, even when you're tired, even when your feet are wet and your brain is questioning your life choices - it's still a privilege to be able to move, explore, and do these things. A Favourite Moment One of my favourite parts of this conversation was Suzanne talking about how the joy came back into running when it became aligned with her values. Not when she got faster. Not when she ticked off another race. Not when she proved anything. But when running became connected to adventure, community, potential, and living in a way that felt true to her.
