Summary Dr. Elisa Chiang discussed strategies for creating predictability in unpredictable economic times, emphasizing that the fundamentals of the economy are generally sound, with current uncertainty stemming from external factors. She highlighted the importance of understanding economic interrelations and the potential impact of challenging international relationships. Dr. Chiang suggested that individuals and businesses should evaluate their dependencies and explore ways to become more self-reliant. For physicians, this includes recognizing the value of their skills and exploring options beyond traditional employment, such as private practice or becoming invaluable within their current roles. She also emphasized the importance of diversifying income streams and managing personal finances to reduce reliance on a single paycheck. The conversation also covered strategies for physicians to increase their income, such as specializing in high-value procedures, leveraging support staff, and improving efficiency. Dr. Chiang advised questioning fixed mindsets, challenging existing beliefs, and experimenting with new approaches to adapt to unpredictable times. She also discussed tax planning, investment strategies, and the importance of maintaining a long-term perspective when dealing with market volatility. For those nearing retirement, she recommended assessing risk tolerance, diversifying portfolios, and building a cash cushion. Dr. Chiang offers one-on-one coaching to help individuals navigate their financial situations and achieve their financial goals. Her podcast, 'Grow Your Wealthy Mindset,' provides financial literacy in bite-sized pieces, helping listeners build the knowledge and mindset needed to create financial stability. Chapters Introduction to Predictability in Unpredictable Times Elisa Chiang was invited to discuss creating predictability in unpredictable economic times. The discussion is framed as non-political, focusing on the factual unpredictability of the world. The goal is to provide strategies for individuals to make their financial situations more predictable. Economic Fundamentals and Global Interdependence Chiang stated that the fundamentals of the economy are still good, unlike the issues in 2008 with banking regulation. The current uncertainty is attributed to the actions and statements of certain individuals. The discussion highlights the importance of understanding the complexities of economics and global interrelations. Anytime decisions are made from an independent place, you start to realize we're actually not independent at all. Challenging Independence and Embracing Interdependence Chiang suggests challenging the idea of complete independence and recognizing interdependence on others. Asking questions about dependencies and self-reliance is valuable, but actions must be carefully considered. Many people feel dependent on their paycheck, but physicians have options due to the physician shortage. Separating the ability to produce income from the current job can create stability. Creating Independence and Managing Control The discussion covers the mentality behind creating a private practice and the desire for independence. It's noted that even in private practice, there is still interdependence on systems and people. The focus should be on how to become independent and self-determining results in situations where you don't have control over all of these things. It's important to understand what you can and can't control. Strategies for Exerting Independence Chiang suggests becoming an entrepreneur within your job to make yourself invaluable. This involves attracting patients directly and highlighting your value to the practice or institution. Employers care about generating income, so making yourself invaluable in this area is crucial. Taking care of personal finances and creating multiple income streams reduces reliance on a single paycheck. Translating Value into Income The inherent value of experience, training, and knowledge is highlighted. Physicians translate this value into income through their actions. The trap of trading time for money limits income potential unless value is translated into different income streams. The discussion explores ways physicians can generate income outside the classic RVU model. Increasing Income within the Physician Realm Specializing in specific procedures or surgeries can elevate income. Leveraging other people, such as nurse practitioners, can double clinic output. Hiring scribes can increase productivity and collections. Physicians should work at the top of their income level, delegating tasks to others. Mindset Shifts for Unpredictable Times Adopting a growth mindset can help individuals respond more effectively in unpredictable times. Questioning current beliefs and challenging the status quo is important. Comparing oneself to others who are thriving can provide insights and motivation. Willingness to spend money to make money and accepting failure are key to success. Helping Individuals Deal with Change Questioning the truth of current situations and exploring potential changes is crucial. Experimenting with small changes and learning from others can lead to improvements. Advocating for necessary resources, such as dedicated scrub techs, can increase efficiency. Believing in the potential for change and presenting a clear case for it is essential. Financial Viability in Private Practice A simple formula for private practice success is income minus expenses minus tax burden. All three factors can be influenced in different ways. Leveraging people, doing more cases, and optimizing income streams are ways to increase income. Tax burden can be managed through various strategies. Tax Planning and Side Businesses Every time is unpredictable, so framing the mindset accordingly is important. The more we think like, yeah, the world is doing whatever it's worlding. The world is doing whatever it's doing. We can make our own predictivity, then we don't have to keep thinking like, oh, it's unpredictable, and we have no way to affect it. It's just always unpredictable. As a W-2 employee, there are limited options for tax reduction. Having a side business can provide opportunities to write off personal expenses. Side hustles should align with passions and translate into value and money. Time Management and Productivity Finding something else that you need to find you having to find more time in order to do something helps you structure your time so that you are most efficient with your time. Limited time resources require careful management. Calendaring and time-blocking can improve efficiency. Having a list of tasks that can be done in 10-15 minute intervals can boost productivity. Managing Retirement Funds If retirement is 10 years or more away, continue with the financial plan and consider contributing more. Maximize retirement accounts and explore other savings options. Buying stocks when they are on sale can be a great strategy. Establish a risk tolerance and adjust investment strategies accordingly. Investment Strategies and Risk Tolerance The stock market tends to go up over time, especially with more people investing. Investing during downturns can lead to better outcomes. Even in retirement, there is still a long investing career ahead. Avoid panic selling and maintain a long-term perspective. Retirement Planning and Withdrawal Rates Assess investment strategies and consider shifting to a more conservative portfolio if nearing retirement. Develop a cash cushion to avoid selling stocks during the first few years of retirement. Understand what money is for and focus on enjoyment and security. Consider a Monte Cristo analysis to assess the chances of running out of money. Dr. Chang's Coaching and Podcast Chiang offers one-on-one coaching to help individuals reach their financial goals. India’s move to hold the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT) in abeyance marks a watershed moment with far-reaching consequences is the starkest example of weaponizing the natural resource in recent times. The IWT, critical to both countries and a lifestream for Pakistan, has survived 6 decades of hostilities and 4 armed conflics. But it has been marked with disputes and disagreements. The Pahalgam attacks was the last straw that made India take the extreme step of keeping it in abeyance. In this episode of The Morning Brief, host Anirban Chowdhury speaks with leading experts Anubhuti Vishnoi, Senior Editor,at The Economic Times and Pranab Dhal Samanta, Executive Editor (Politics),at The Economic Times to unpack the legal, political, and strategic dimensions of this bold decision. What does holding the treaty "in abeyance" truly mean under international law? Could this signal a shift in India’s approach to critical resource diplomacy? And as energy security takes center stage, will Jammu & Kashmir finally unlock its vast hydroelectric potential? Moreover, could India’s stance on the IWT set a powerful precedent for future water-sharing agreements across the region—and challenge the established global norms? There is so much uncertainty in our economy right now. With tariffs and cuts and mass layoffs, many people feel nervous about money. KSL Newsradio's Amanda Dickson asked her guests how they handle financial challenges on A Woman's View. Her guests this week are Dr. Susan Madsen, founder/director of the Utah Women and Leadership Project and the Karen Haight Huntsman endowed professor of leadership in the Huntsman School of Business at Utah State University and Sally Dietlein, Executive Producer at Hale Center Theater.
Joining Mario Nigro for this episode is Wandrille Lefèvre of EC2, a Québec-based consulting firm that provides specialized M&A and corporate finance advice to midmarket companies. According to Wandrille, the Québec market, like other Canadian markets, is driven by factors like baby boomer retirements and a need for technology investment. The range of buyers in the province includes a similar mix of private equity and strategics as is found elsewhere. Even in the uncertain tariff environment, EC2 is seeing steady interest from potential sellers, with the caveat that those sellers are deliberating more about how to proceed, while buyers are looking more intently at the tariff exposure of potential acquisitions.

Blood Moons are symbolic of birth and death and the Ides of March remind us of Julius Caesar's assassination - the fall of a king - and his replacement by Octavian-August-Caesar who ushered in Pax Roman, or the Golden Age. The Falcon 9 rocket, surprisingly, has powerful connections to Julius as well: as a leader, he was compared by historians to the falcon, and as a strong pagan leader is considered one of the 9 worthies. The company behind the rocket is Musk's Space X and the organization that launched it is the same NASA that used the 2024 solar eclipse to perform an Egyptian ritual that they named after the sun devourer Apep. In the news we have seen Musk's other company, Tesla, undergo acts of vandalism and threats by extremists on the political left, thought this is a minority. The majority still keep their electric cars. On the other side, now the political right is buying these cars to support Musk, who wants to use AI to run the government. This comes amidst exposure that, according to the Economic Times, “All available Biden-signed documents were checked by The Oversight Project, which revealed that every signature, except the withdrawal from the 2024 presidential candidacy, was produced by autopen technology.” In other words, the exposure of machines doing all the work will lead to more machines doing more of the work - including using AI for military decisions, visa revocation, firings, and healthcare. Technocracy is the great reset - electric cars, regional unions, a cashless society, AI driven everything -, the great replacement of the republic which, unlike Rome, will be usurped not by the necessary evil of Augustus, but by programmed emperors that operate under the fallacy of computer-perfection. And perhaps that empire will expand, as Elon Musk prepares to send a starship to Mars by 2026, carrying the Optimus Robot, programmed with human knowledge from X. -FREE ARCHIVE (w. ads)SUBSCRIPTION ARCHIVEX / TWITTER FACEBOOKMAIN WEBSITECashApp: $rdgable EMAIL: rdgable@yahoo.com / TSTRadio@protonmail.comBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/tst-radio--5328407/support.

It’s that time of the year again. Markets are abuzz once more with talks of Tesla coming to India. The race to woo Elon Musk’s EV giant has intensified. In a world where skills gaps are widening and job demands are evolving at unprecedented rates, understanding how to gain a "skills advantage" is critical for organizations to stay competitive. In this episode, Anish Lalchandani, author of The Skills Advantage, delves into his insights on bridging skills gaps, building resilient teams, and preparing organizations for the future. Anish walks us through his approach, discussing how the right skills strategy can shift a team from good to exceptional and position L&D as a driver of business transformation. Whether you're a leader looking to upskill your team or an L&D professional aiming to create a sustainable skills strategy, this conversation is packed with actionable insights. KEY TAKEAWAYS The established approach to L&D is no longer enough. L&D needs to go beyond business alignment and take the lead in equipping our businesses to thrive in the future. You don´t have the wrong people, they have the wrong skills. Employees need to be convinced that upskilling benefits them and the business. A huge proportion of executive transitions fail, and we need to address this. What is going on in the market and industry helps you identify future skill needs. Use technology to help with your data analysis and become more agile. When you demonstrate impact, you get permission to do more. BEST MOMENTS “The established approach to L&D is no longer enough.” “Reskilling is a long-term game, start now.” “We need to hold ourselves accountable to actual upskilling and not just providing learning.” “You don´t have the wrong people, they have the wrong skills.” “The risk of relying on firing and hiring is extraordinary.” Anish Lalchandani Bio Anish Lalchandani is the author of the book ‘The Skills Advantage: A Human-Centered, Sustainable and Scalable Approach to Reskilling’. Having held leadership roles at leading firms like A.P. Moller Maersk (current), General Electric, Standard Chartered Bank and other organizations, he has developed extensive expertise in Talent, OD, Leadership and HR Strategy. In addition to being a Chartered Fellow of the CIPD, he is also a certified professional coach and mentor to start-up founders. Several publications, including Economic Times, Thinkers360, LeadersHum and HRD, rate him as one of the top influencers in HR and the Future of Work. Being able to swim is often considered a life skill in a country like New Zealand - but tough economic times are forcing many families to pull their children out of swim lessons. A swim school in Wellington said they've had a large drop in the number of families paying for swimming lessons over the last six months. But water experts say Wellington waterfront is a hotspot for drownings, and if parents can't afford lessons, then something needs to be done. Bella Craig reports.

In the June quarter of 2024, Honasa Consumer, the maker of Mamaearth, decided to launch this new project called Project Neev. The idea was to bring about a foundational change in the way the company operates, especially distribution. For context, Mamaearth hit the bourses in October last year when everyone else who had IPO plans had decided to hold them off for a bit. But Varun Alagh, the CEO and co-founder of Mamaearth, was of the firm opinion that the timing was perfectly ripe.Things seemed to be going alright until this month when Honasa Consumer reported its first loss ever since it went public. Everything points to the massive change in the company's distribution strategy. It decided to dump all its super-stockists or distributors for an in-house sales team that would take care of it. Basically, all the middlemen were kicked out.The company estimated a one-time hit of Rs 50 crore in inventory losses because of this shift. But Alagh himself admitted in an interview with The Economic Times that the real damage was closer to Rs 70 crore. And former distributors allege that the real picture is much worse. They estimate that there are stocks worth Rs 300 crores lying unsold and unclaimed. In today's episode, we'll delve deeper into what this change in distribution strategy has led to for Mamaearth and its former stockists. So I thought that today we would focus on the world of puzzles. As kids, young and old, we are fascinated and curious about putting together random pieces of cardboard to make a picture, or take numbers or scenes or words and fit them together to make something whole, craving that satisfaction to find the answer and all the frustrations and exhilarations that come with it! Whether you're doing sudoku or playing a game or proving online that we're human and not a robot, puzzles keep our minds focused on solving problems. For many across the world, crossword puzzles are part of a daily routine, trying to find different ways to use and frame words from clues that playfully speak to everyday culture, trivia, knowledge, and even local or global nuances. So it was really fun to catch up with crossword puzzle constructor, Mangesh Ghogre, first India-based crossword constructor for the Los Angeles Times in 2010 and The New York Times in 2013. Mangesh is an investment banker and a writer, and has had a true passion as a crossword puzzle solver and constructor since his college days. His expertise has developed over decades and his work and writing have been featured in The New Yorker, The Times of India, and The Economic Times, among others. Mangesh is currently the editor and constructor for the Mini Crossword in The Forbes India magazine. Some of his marquee NYT crosswords include a Fourth of July-themed crossword in 2017, a Mahatma Gandhi-themed crossword in 2019 to celebrate Gandhi's 150th birth anniversary and Taj Mahal-themed crossword in 2023 to celebrate Indian independence day. I was able to chat with him this summer, and in true puzzle solving fashion, we started out with the basics…
