In an ever-changing job market, it's more important than ever to learn skills that employers need now and in the future. Host Jason Altmire learns more as he chats with Tim Taylor, cofounder and president of America Succeeds. The conversation delves into what Tim dubs as ‘durable skills' – the skills that revolve around how employees use what they know. This can involve critical thinking, communication, collaboration, and creativity, among others. Tim says these skills are key to the second rung of a career ladder, and that successful careers are impossible without these attributes. But importantly, Tim says these skills can be taught. To learn more about Career Education Colleges & Universities, visit our website.
In this episode, we dive into the transformative shift in the job market towards valuing soft skills, now being recognized as "Durable Skills." Once dominated by technical proficiencies, today's top sought-after skills include communication, collaboration, and time management. This shift is driven by the realization that these skills have a longer shelf life and remain relevant despite rapid technological advancements. We explore the Durable Skills Advantage Framework, a partnership between CompTIA and America Succeeds, highlighting how these skills have become essential. Key findings include: Durable Skills make up 7 of the top 10 most requested skills in job postings. The top 5 Durable Skills are requested nearly 5 times more often than the top 5 technical skills. Leadership and communication are the most in-demand competencies. The COVID-19 pandemic further emphasized the importance of Durable Skills as remote work highlighted the need for communication, adaptability, and digital literacy. As technology continues to evolve, the demand for individuals with a strong foundation in Durable Skills will only increase.

And one of the things we discovered in working on this project, right, is that it's not doing more necessarily, it's just doing what you do a little differently."“And it's rare that I have talked this long about durable skills without talking about one of our big drivers, right is economic mobility and equity. And as you talk about, you know, the in you think about those things, and how these are happening in the classroom and where else they're happening. There's been a lot of inequity.”“The Association for Talent Development did a study and 83% of employers complain about a skills gap, the largest two in the workforce, our critical thinking and communication skills, right? Research has proven that Durable Skills - like critical thinking, leadership, collaboration and communication - are in demand across the workforce. However, all too often, meaningful opportunities for students to develop these skills happen outside of today's classrooms. This isn't just an equity issue, it's an economic one. Building toward a more inclusive future means expanding opportunities in the education system to develop these skills. Stephanie Short, Vice President of Partnerships at America Succeeds, a non-profit education advocacy organization committed to improving educational opportunities, outcomes, and equity, speaks on the importance of including Durable Skills in education pathways and share details on: Her personal story of being a college dropout and grinding her way through the hospitality industry in search of a better “grown up” career. Her story is not unlike the millions of students across the country today who are uneasy about the future and desperately in need of a new type of education system to connect them to a meaningful, economically mobile pathway. Why Durable Skills must be included in education pathways to better serve all students - including the ones who are a lot like her and looking to find their way to a meaningful career. Stephanie Short is the Vice President of Partnerships at America Succeeds, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit policy-advocacy organization committed to improving education and preparing students to succeed in the workforce. She went into college as an undecided major and took a break from school to work in the real world at various jobs. She found that she was checking the boxes for others on her career path not to disappoint others. The increased anxiety made her feel like a failure and had a chip on her shoulder because she didn't take the straight path to a career. She discovered a passion for marketing and went back to school for marketing and business. Part of her work now is educating people on the importance of “durable skills.” Biggest Takeaway— We need to build students' durable skills, so they can adapt to the changing work economy and succeed. 0:50 High school and college 3:30 Taking a break from college 9:34 First marketing jobs 11:14 Starting own consulting business 13:06 America Succeeds 16:00 Durable skills 20:04 Workforce shortage 23:30 How to teach kids durable skills Stephanie Short https://www.linkedin.com/in/stephaniefshort/ https://twitter.com/stephfshort https://americasucceeds.org/ https://americasucceeds.org/portfolio/the-high-demand-for-durable-skills-october-2021 --- Continue to enjoy this journey, share, and subscribe to 'The That's a Job? As the COVID-19 pandemic recedes, it leaves in its wake declining public school student enrollment and achievement, local, state, and federal dollars continue to flow to Colorado school districts in ever-larger amounts. Despite this, student achievement made only a modest recovery in English Language Arts (reading and writing) in 2022 after a huge plunge in 2021, and fewer than four in 10 Colorado students can perform grade-level math proficiently. To discuss these issues and much more including teacher pay and innovation in the classroom, our Host and Chairman Earl Wright welcomes CSI's current and former education fellows. Brenda Dickhoner was CSI's Mike A. Leprino Free Enterprise Fellow in 2021 and is now the President and CEO of education advocacy group Ready Colorado. Jason Gaulden is the Vice President of Partnerships at America Succeeds and co-author of the groundbreaking report, “The Age of Agility: Education Pathways for the Future of Work.” In his work, Gaulden strives to embed agility into the learning process, both in terms of the technical skillset and the lifelong learning mindset that students need “to succeed in the global economy but contribute to their local community.” The need for this paradigm shift in education is epitomized in the rapid decline of the value of a college degree, which used to serve as a good proxy for proving that you had the knowledge to get ahead. Going forward, we need to address three major obstacles: Students do not enter the workforce of today with all of the technical skillsets and Agile mindset they need to succeed. Teachers cannot “relay knowledge they don’t have themselves.” The education system needs to be more customized to different learning paths and learning journeys. These problems are reflected in America Succeeds’ three tenets – Agile students, Agile teachers and Agile education systems.
