It's easy to give up on people when they disappoint us, miss expectations, or don't seem to fit the role they're in. But great leaders know people are rarely just "good" or "bad" at work. More often, they're either understood or misunderstood, positioned well or placed poorly. What would change if you started looking for people's potential before writing them off? In this episode, host Donald Miller talks with Brian Hooks, CEO of Stand Together and co-author of Believe in People, about how leaders can unlock more value by helping people discover and use their gifts. They discuss building stronger teams, solving social problems from the bottom up, and why believing in people may be one of the most practical leadership decisions you can make. Listen in to learn the secret to putting people in the right role so they can do their best work. In First Choice Women’s Resource Centers, Inc. v. Davenport, the New Jersey Attorney General, Matthew Platkin, issued a subpoena to a faith-based, pro-life, nonprofit, requiring that it turn over years of sensitive information, including the names and contact information of its donors. First Choice Women’s Resource Centers, which provides free medical services and is funded by private donations, refused to comply with the demand for donor information, alleging that the subpoena chilled its rights of association and speech. After federal courts dismissed the case as “unripe” and directed it to state court, the Third Circuit affirmed. On April 29, the Supreme Court unanimously reversed, holding that First Choice had demonstrated a present injury sufficient to establish Article III standing based on its First Amendment claims.Join us to discuss the ruling and its implications for donor privacy and constitutional protections.Featuring: Prof. Teresa Stanton Collett, Professor and Director, Prolife Center, University of St. Thomas School of LawCasey Mattox, Vice President for Legal Strategy, Stand Together
Recorded LIVE! on the Harbor Terrace at the ASU+GSV Summit in San Diego, Mike Palmer is joined by Dr. Steven Taylor, Policy Director and Senior Fellow for Economic Mobility at Stand Together Trust. Steve brings a unique perspective to the table, combining a national philanthropic lens with his roles on the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia and the National Advisory Committee for Institutional Quality and Integrity (NACIQI). The conversation captures the shifting energy of the summit, moving away from the peak of AI hype toward what Steve calls "optimistic skepticism" - a more mature look at how technology can practically transform learning while remaining grounded in the reality of its current limitations. The discussion explores the potential of AI to revolutionize the K-12 experience, using examples like Austin's Alpha School to show how personalized learning can compress the school day, allowing students more time to pursue their passions. Steve and Mike tackle the difficult questions of equity and the "risk capital" required to bring high-cost innovations to scale. Then we pivot to the higher education landscape, where Steve emphasizes the need to dignify non-degree pathways. He shares insights from Virginia's FastForward program, a pay-for-performance model that has successfully moved residents into high-demand fields through short-term credentials, proving that ROI isn't just a metric for four-year degrees. As the conversation turns to the future of work, Steve expresses concern over the potential displacement of entry-level roles—the "desk jockey" jobs that traditionally provide young people with essential social capital and early career experience. He argues that our labor laws are antiquated and must evolve to support a more flexible, AI-driven workforce that favors 1099 and gig-based contributions. From the necessity of correcting AI's erroneous outputs to the complexities of AI-driven hiring and the debate over universal basic income, this episode offers a comprehensive look at the policy and philanthropic shifts needed to ensure everyone can contribute to a changing economy. "We're living in this collective illusion where the extremes are mischaracterizing who we are as a people." More than 70% of Americans — across every demographic — say their deepest aspiration is to contribute to the lives of others. Most of them think they're alone in that. They're not. Chiles v. Salazar addressed whether a Colorado law prohibiting “conversion therapy” violates the First Amendment. The case arose from a challenge to a Colorado law that limited what licensed therapists could say about gender and sexuality when counseling gay and transgender clients. Kaley Chiles, a professional counselor, argued that the law infringed her First Amendment right to free speech. On March 31, the Supreme Court issued an 8-1 decision in Chiles’s favor, holding that the law, as applied to her talk therapy, amounts to viewpoint-based regulation of speech. The Court also found that the lower courts failed to apply the rigorous level of scrutiny required by the First Amendment. Join us for a discussion on this decision and its implications for the future. Is the FACE Act being enforced as Congress originally intended or has its selected application raised serious concerns about fairness, constitutional limits, and the protection of pro-life Americans? The FACE Act has returned to the national spotlight following charges against former CNN anchor Don Lemon for interfering with the religious exercise of worshippers at a Minnesota church last month. Enacted in 1994, the law was intended to protect access to both reproductive health facilities and houses of worship by imposing criminal and civil penalties on those who intimidate, injure, or obstruct individuals seeking to enter them.In recent years, however, questions have been raised about whether the statute has been enforced evenhandedly. The law has been used repeatedly to prosecute pro-life activists, while many pro-life pregnancy resource centers and churches that have faced vandalism, threats, and even firebombings have seen comparatively limited federal response. These concerns have fueled growing calls in Congress to repeal or reform the statute.Join us for a timely discussion as a panel of experts examines the FACE Act’s statutory framework, its recent enforcement, and the constitutional and policy questions surrounding its future.Featuring:Matthew Cavedon, Director, Project on Criminal Justice, Cato InstituteJeremy Dys, Senior Counsel, First LibertyErin Hawley, Supreme Court & Appellate Litigation Chair, Lex Politica; Of Counsel, Alliance Defending Freedom(Moderator) Casey Mattox, Vice President, Legal Strategy, Stand Together; Vice President, Legal and Judicial Strategy, Americans for Prosperity

We Stand Together or Die Separately Recovery has never been a solo project. From the beginning, survival has depended on connection, honesty, and showing up for each other — not perfectly, but consistently. Isolation is where addiction thrives. Community is where recovery lives. Today on The Daily Trudge, we talk plainly about a hard truth: when we disconnect, hide, or try to do this alone, the risk isn't theoretical — it's real. “We stand together or die separately” isn't dramatic language; it's lived experience. Addiction kills in isolation. Recovery grows in shared truth. This conversation isn't about guilt or pressure. It's about remembering why fellowship matters, why reaching out matters, and why staying connected — even when it's uncomfortable — can be the difference between staying sober and quietly slipping away. Standing together doesn't mean agreeing on everything. It means staying honest, staying present, and refusing to disappear. It means asking for help before things get desperate and offering support without trying to control outcomes. If you've been pulling back, going quiet, or telling yourself you're fine when you're not — this is your reminder. You don't have to do this alone. None of us were meant to. Drop a comment and share: What helps you stay connected when you want to isolate? No one trudges alone.

On the one-year anniversary of Trump's inauguration, we are exhausted and anxious. That's why we're turning to our favorite historian Heather Cox Richardson to help us reflect on the year and how we can and must continue to stand strong together. This conversation is not just about naming what's gone wrong; it is also about recognizing what's beginning to shift. Heather shared why the tide may be turning as cracks form in the MAGA movement and more people are rejecting extremism in favor of humanity. Let's start the new year talking about how we will continue to bring positive change and the power we have when we stand together. For a transcript of this episode, please email comms@redwine.blue. Annie presents an analysis of the political ecosystem in which our unions exist, including the peak body (ACTU) and the Labor party, which was borne from the need to represent working class interests in parliament. She presents two case studies of unions that have been put into administration, with a focus on Labor Party political outcomes vs unions' core business - members' wages and conditions. We begin with a mini-review of the CFMEU Construction & General Division administration saga, since special legislation passed both houses of Parliament in August 2024 after a sustained legacy media smear campaign. The Red Queen approach of dismantling the CFMEU's core business via 'removed persons' in its delegate-organiser structure may be party of a larger politic, at the low cost of workers' lives and livelihoods.Next, recapping the cutthroat Game-of-Thrones style administration of the HSU/HWU and fear and loathing responses of some of the lowest-paid workers in that industry to a politicking leadership which landed the union in administration by June 2025. And in a whirlwind finale, we hear from HWU organisers, members, and supporters rallying in front of Parliament on 4 December as part of their 'Stand Together, Win Together' campaign, the culmination of months of hard work - a David and Goliath fight not just for wages n conds, but for the life of their union.
LESSON 354We Stand Together, Christ And I, In Peace And Certainty Of Purpose. And In Him Is His Creator, As He Is In Me.My oneness with the Christ establishes me as Your Son, beyond the reach of time, and wholly free of every law but Yours. I have no self except the Christ in me. I have no purpose but His Own. And He is like His Father. Thus must I be one with You as well as Him. For who is Christ except Your Son as You created Him? And what am I except the Christ in me?- Jesus Christ in ACIM

I wanted to celebrate getting together anytime the team is in the office as a part of a hybrid work environment. Today for one of my team I coach they were altogether in a room for their daily scrum or standup. It was a great sight to be seen as I think it may have been a first. Remote is ok but when teams are on-site they should really meet together so they can see how the others on the team are really reacting to discussion. It makes the remote connection so much better later on. While some might say of course, but I have seen many large corporations where the people stay in their cubes when they come to work, just as if theyr were at home. They never leave their desks. Summer is typically a quiet time for higher education but this summer has been anything but quiet amid funding cuts, lawsuits, and questions about the value of American colleges and universities. Our guests this week are part of Stand Together for Higher Ed, a new nonpartisan movement of university faculty and staff focused on building collective power to uphold the core values of higher education. Kathy Roberts Forde is a professor of journalism at the University of Massachusetts Amherst and Mark Pachucki is associate professor of sociology at the University of Massachusetts Amherst and co-author of the university's Mutual Defense Academic Compact (MDAC) resolution. Ford, Pachucki, and their Stand Together for Higher Ed colleagues spent the summer talking to faculty and staff from universities across the country about what they can do to defend their institutions amid ongoing attacks and threats from the federal government. They don't have a quick, easy answer but they do have a plan for how people across campuses come together to share how higher education impacts our everyday lives. Is this approach enough? Chris Beem and Candis Watts Smith disagree on the value of Stand Together's approach and discuss their differences at the end of the episode.
Warehouse Workers Against ICE Petition: https://form.jotform.com/251684939561066 Palestinian Trade Unions Statement: https://masarbadil.org/en/2025/07/6308/ No Azure for Apartheid Pledge: https://t.co/df0U2S9P26 We're back after our brief vacation! And so much has happened in the last two weeks! We've got a supersized headline section covering workers organizing at REI, Starbucks, FedEx, UPS, Airgas, Care New England, the Wonderful Company, Canada Post, and more. For our major stories, we start with a review of how university administrators are using the Trump Administration's attacks on higher education as cover to push forward attacks on student organizers. While many workers are coming together to fight ICE, a recent Labor Notes report documents how the leadership of some parts of the building trades are failing the most basic test of a union leader: solidarity. Workers at Fenway Park have gone on strike for the first time after contracting giant Aramark refuses to pay them enough to live in one of the most expensive parts of the country. Finally, we discuss the state of ICE's attacks on the US working class and how more and more Americans are realizing the shared interests we have with our immigrant siblings.
