For CMOs, strategy is as much about what not to do as it is about what to focus on. In this episode, we explore the transformative power of focus with three marketing leaders who have mastered the art of saying "no" to the nonessential.   Highlights include:  JD Dillon shares how Tigo Energy's "Green Glove Service" transformed customer service into a brand differentiator and rallied the entire organization around a simple, powerful concept.   Laura Beaulieu discusses her approach at Holistiplan to amplify customer voices through webinars and referrals, focusing on building an influencer pipeline that converts loyal customers into brand advocates.  Kevin Briody explains how Edmentum consolidated multiple websites to simplify the customer experience, reduce internal complexity, and drive more impactful marketing through a streamlined digital presence. (He's now CMO of Meteor Education).   We also cover the challenges of prioritizing in a fast-paced environment, strategies for creating impactful marketing initiatives, and the delicate balance between agility and focus. How can districts reverse chronic absenteeism and gain a deeper understanding of why students don't come to school? Can we measure how “connected” students are to their schools? How do we impact the level of connection they feel with potential mentors in their lives? I invited Jen Perry to episode 172 of the De Facto Leaders podcast to discuss this topic and explore ways schools can assess student engagement and put meaningful programs in place to increase it. Jen Perry is Senior Manager of Learning Design and Whole Learner at Edmentum. Jen has worked over 30+ years with youth in educational and community settings. As a teacher, administrator, and trainer, her passion has been to help educators develop an understanding of the importance of social emotional learning and build trauma-informed responses and systems. This work has included supporting youth, administrators, and schools in understanding behavior and implementing transformational change through strength-based approaches. In this conversation, we discussed:✅Using positive youth development models to support youth involved with the legal system.✅Changing our assumptions about kids who have “risk factors” and resources. ✅Helping youth build developmental assets through community navigation and academic support.✅Research on the effectiveness of high-impact tutoring in increasing attendance and student engagement.✅How do we help kids connect academic work to meaningful life goals? ✅Giving students the language they need for self-advocacy and self-awareness.In this episode, we mentioned the following resources:“The Poverty Problem: How Education Can Promote Resilience and Counter Poverty's Impact on Brain Development and Functioning” by Horacio Sanchez  Link here: https://www.amazon.com/Poverty-Problem-Resilience-Development-Functioning/dp/1071842927Maguillie, L, Perry, J., Aiello, J. Jethro welcomes Dr. Jayne Lammers to Transformative Principal. Although we're talking about AI tools, we didn't spend a lot of time talking about the mundanity and what other sources are talking about: the how to, which tool does what thing. Really, we give guidance for school leaders about how to think beyond the boxes and the accountability systems that are currently set up to start to reimagine what learning can be  in schools and beyond, and the ways in which generative AI tools might play a role in that. Edmentum has been using AI tools on the back end for a while. Courses products - self-directed learning. Teaching kids how to use the tools as a personalized tutor for them. Badges and micro-credentialingYouth engaged in “fandom” not looking for credit.Butting up against the expectations and formalization of Disrupt the siloed nature of secondary schoolsVery few learners get the opportunity to see connections between their content areas. The Sims 12000 players - writing the stories - Trying to set that up in classroom. “Slow and unwise” in school vs developing as a writer in her community. Don't take what Eve does and give her grade for it. Making learning not about jumping through hoops. AI Tools can make more mundane tasks easierTutoring spaces - Need to differentiate. There's not enough time in a class period to make the content connect to students' particular interests. The need for a teacher is less important than it has been in the past. There is a need for teacher engagement in the relationship. The human connection can be transformative. Teacher moves into the role of facilitator, coach, and mentor, rather than an evaluator. How to be a transformative principal? Paulding County News Podcast Sunday 1, 2023  Paulding Sheriffs lawsuit:    Tyler Canaris has filed a lawsuit against Paulding County Sheriff Gary Gulledge and former deputy Michael McMaster, alleging civil rights violations. In a 2022 incident, dashcam footage showed McMaster body slamming Canaris during a traffic stop, claiming he matched a suspect description. The lawsuit contends that McMaster failed to follow proper procedures, leading to Canaris' arrest without probable cause. Canaris suffered severe injuries, incurring $73,000 in medical bills, including fractures and a traumatic brain injury. Canaris seeks punitive damages in the lawsuit. McMaster was fired from the sheriff's office in February 2023...............This from Atlanta News First    New report urges police to reduce high-speed chases:    A recent report from the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) strongly recommends that law enforcement agencies adopt policies to reduce high-speed pursuits in their communities. The report suggests that pursuits should only occur when officers are aware of a violent crime or an imminent threat of one, not solely due to the suspect's dangerous driving. The recommendations stem from input by numerous police agencies and leaders, emphasizing the need to prioritize safety. One of the examples they gave in this article was about an incident that happened in 2021. 12- year-old Leden Boykins was killed in the crash during the high-speed chase. He was the friend in the back seat while the driver Charlie Moore and his teenage son were in the front two seats. The state trooper pulled Moore over after following very closely for a while. He asked for Moore's identification in which Moore responded with why am I being pulled over and that he wanted a supervisor out there. He rolled up his window. A few moments later two Paulding County Deputies showed up and smashed in the driver side window and Moore decided to take off starting the high speed chase pursuit. The trooper did a pit menuver which sent the car in the other direction off the road. Moore and his son were fine but Boykins was killed in the cash..........this from decaturish.com  Twin of Paulding County woman found dead in her home desperate for answers  Seven months after the discovery of Jennifer Johnson's body in her Paulding County home, her family is still seeking answers about her death. The Paulding County Sheriff's Office incident report provides limited information, and the cause of death remains officially undetermined. Jennifer's sister, Jessica Renda, disputes claims of a drug overdose, emphasizing that Jennifer was not a drug user. The sheriff's office acknowledges finding drugs in Jennifer's system but awaits additional test results from the GBI medical examiner. The investigation faces delays due to a backlog of forensic tests. He claims that students can easily cheat by using search engines to find answers to course assessments. The teacher, Jeremy Noonan, demonstrated in a video how students could quickly complete assessments with high scores using this method. He also alleged that school administrators allowed such cheating to boost graduation rates, which he considers a systemic issue. However, the school district disputed Noonan's claims, stating that cheating was not widespread among fully virtual students. Edmentum defended its programs, stating they are vetted for quality.............This from The Center Square  FEMA systems communications:  The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) are partnering to conduct a nationwide emergency alert system test. The EdTech space is in a state of flux. New entrants are hitting the market, while mergers and acquisitions are increasing. Voices of eLearning host JW Marshall spoke with Jamie Candee, CEO of Edmentum, regarding its acquisition of Apex Learning and what the future holds for the new company as they continue to serve the education ecosystem.“Edmentum is at the intersection of adaptive learning and assessment tools surrounded by a digital curriculum and teacher support and analytics. With the Apex Learning acquisition, we will deepen and broaden virtual and blended learning offerings,” Candee said.By combining the platforms, Candee noted they can better address the flexibility that the market desires now.In determining if Apex Learning and Edmentum would have synergies, Candee expressed that culture fit was essential. “My number one job is to have the right group of people and be people first. That translates to how we support our partners as an educator-first organization. We seek to amplify the teacher, and both companies have that alignment.”So, what does the future hold for the new company and online learning in general? “Education has fundamentally changed forever. We need stability and calm and don't want to change the user experience. We are taking the time to understand what our partners need today and in the future.”The company is evolving along with school systems to “build back better.” Their main focus is capacity building, which means taking the time to build a model and moving at a pace that feels comfortable. The big challenge now is how to address interrupted learning, which students felt in different ways in the last year. “This requires measurement tools to aid the educator paired with individualized learning and tools for teachers to group subsets of students and work toward accelerated learning,” Candee shared.
