Leaders are not the only people who need to have difficult conversations in the workplace. Yet, leaders set the tone for how much people are willing and able to talk about hard things. In this episode, Jeff and I discuss how leaders can make it easier for those important conversations to happen. Key Points In one study of managers, most people admitted to remaining silent with their bosses and nearly 75% said colleagues also felt uncomfortable speaking up. Meet people on their own turf. Others are more likely to speak up if they are in a setting that's more comfortable for them. Leaders should consider shifting timing and/or medium to one that's of the preference for the person who doesn't have power. Explain why you're asking about a topic and your intention for a conversation at the start. Providing context prevents people from having to guess at your agenda. Guest Mike Magee is President of Minerva University since April 2022. Prior to joining Minerva, he was the founding CEO of Chiefs for Change, a non-profit organization supporting leaders of many of the nation's largest and most innovative K-12 public education systems. Previously, Magee co-founded and was CEO of Rhode Island Mayoral Academies (RIMA). As CEO of RIMA, he built a statewide network of regional, racially, and economically diverse public schools while successfully advocating for sweeping changes to stat education policy. Navyn Salem is Founder and CEO of a non-profit social enterprise called Edesia. Navyn founded Edesia more than ten years ago to help end global malnutrition and set about building a factory in Rhode Island in the USA to produce lifesaving nutritional products for humanitarian agencies. Edesia has already reached over 17 million children in 62 countries. An email Navyn sent this past week really caught our attention. Despite outlining the unprecedented food crisis happening around the world, it also was filled with hope and a historic path forward. Right now, governments have granted more funds to support the many millions facing hunger. Historically the world has the opportunity to move from helping 25% of the world's malnourished to reaching and supporting 50%. Currently 3 million children under 5 die every year from malnutrition that is completely preventable.Edesia, as one of the major producers of a lifesaving supplement called Plumpy Nut, has one problem . . . it can't make their life saving product fast enough to meet the orders of humanitarian agencies tasked with spending the increased funding. So Navyn, in her true entrepreneurial and unstoppable style, is seeking to urgently scale her factory and increase its output dramatically by moving to 24 hours a day, 7 days a week production. To do that she needs help to buy $12 million worth of equipment. We think you'll be truly inspired by Navyn as so many others have been before. Brian A. Wong is a Chinese American entrepreneur and investor. He was the first American and only the 52nd employee to join Alibaba Group, where he contributed to the company's early globalization efforts and served as Jack Ma's special assistant for international affairs. During his 16-year tenure, Wong established the Alibaba Global Initiatives (AGI) division and was the founder and executive director of the Alibaba Global Leadership Academy. Wong remains an adviser to the AGI team and regularly teaches courses on China's digital economy and the Tao of Alibaba management principles. George McGraw is a leading expert on water and sanitation in the United States and around the world. He currently serves as the Founder & CEO of DigDeep, the only WaSH (water, sanitation and hygiene) organization solely focused on the USA. In 2019, he co-authored the ‘Closing the Water Access Gap in the United States' Report, an explosive study that revealed over 2.2 million Americans currently live without a tap or toilet at home, with race being the #1 predictor of water insecurity. In 2022, he was the lead author on ‘Draining: The Economic Impact of America's Hidden Water Crisis' which calculated this water access gap costs the US economy $8.58 billion each year it remains unsolved. The report also found that there is hope: for every $1 invested in closing the water gap, the US economy would see a nearly 5x return. George works with local government officials, policymakers and utility providers to innovate unique solutions to the problems of water and sanitation access in different areas of the nation, consciously avoiding a “one-size-fits-all” approach which fails to address the varied intersections of water poverty and environmental racism that plague the country's infrastructure. George is a leading queer voice in social change, entrepreneurship and environmental justice.
