How to Build A Thriving Team

100 Degrees of Entrepreneurship

If you want to build a thriving team that will help your business succeed, there are several things you have to keep in mind. From finding the right people to maintaining a positive workplace culture, here are some tips to help you build a thriving team! 1. Understand what needs to be outsourced Okay, so first things first... BEFORE you even start hiring, take some time to really evaluate what kind of team you need. Ask yourself these questions: What kinds of skills and experience do they need to possess? How many people will I need to optimize my business operations? Once you have a good idea of the kind of team you need, you can start reaching out and looking for potential candidates. 2. Choose someone who is a great culture fit When you're in the hiring phase, it's important to look for culture fit as well as skills and experience. You want to make sure that the people you're hiring will mesh well with your existing team and company culture. 3. Cross-train your hires whenever possible It's also important to cross-train your team members so that they're able to pitch in and help out in other areas if needed. This is especially important if you have a small team. 4. Automate as much as you can Another key to building a thriving team is to automate as much of your business processes as possible. This will free up your team's time so that they can focus on more important tasks. 5. Inspire your team with your words and actions Finally, remember that your team is made up of people just like you. So take the time to listen to them, get to know them on a personal level, and show them that you appreciate their hard work with things like time off and bonuses. By doing this, you'll inspire them to do their best work for your company. Once you have your team assembled, it's important to keep them happy and engaged! Here are a few tips to set your team up for success and keep them inspired: 1. Offer regular training and development opportunities Provide your team with an opportunity to grow and develop their skills by offering regular training and other development opportunities. This can be in the form of online courses, conferences, or even on-the-job training. 2. Encourage a healthy work-life balance Encourage your team to maintain a healthy work-life balance by offering flexible hours and working from home options. This will help them to avoid burnout and stay motivated. It also helps to give them the occasional day off to relax and recharge! 3. Celebrate successes together Finally, make sure to celebrate successes together as a team. This could be in the form of a team lunch, celebration email, or even just a simple thank you. By doing this, you'll show your team that you appreciate their hard work and remind them that they're part of something special. 4. Offer regular feedback Make sure to offer regular feedback, both positive and constructive. This way, they'll know what they're doing well and what they need to work on. 5. And as always, don't forget to communicate Encourage open communication by having regular team meetings and one-on-one check-ins. This will give your team the chance to share their ideas, concerns, and feedback with you. It also helps to build trust and rapport within the team! Remember, building a thriving team is essential to the success of any business. By following these tips, you'll be well on your way to putting together a highly-skilled and motivated team that will help your business succeed! PS - If you want to learn more about how I implemented these best practices in building my thriving team, make sure you give this episode a listen. I shared some practical and actionable tips that you can use to build your own high-performing team. Thanks so much for tuning in and I hope you find this helpful! "When people feel that their work has a purpose and that they have a say in that, they're going to perform at a much higher level. They're going to stay engaged and be more committed." - Stephanie Skryzowski What you'll learn in this episode: How to build a highly capable and thriving team that supports your business Why you don't want to wait until you're 100% capacity before growing your team The advantage of structuring interviews as a conversation VS structured and scripted questions Employee pyramid of needs and how to inspire your team Links in this episode:  Pyramid of employee needs (research from Bain & Company) Balancing the Company's Needs and Employee Satisfaction More resources to help you elevate not just your team, but also your business: Amy Northard on Investing in Your Business Infrastructure 8 Tips to Host a Virtual Team Retreat 4 Strategies to Build a Sustainable Business

It's a new year. Which means our favorite thing is coming up...That's right: taxes!Jokes aside, whatever the due date, we ALL must eventually pay taxes. And it's no joke that taxes for freelancers and creative business owners are often more complicated. Last year Amy Northard, CPA, joined Mediavine's Senior Director of Marketing Jenny Guy on Teal Talk to walk us through taxes as a content creator, and how to start off the new year on the right foot. You don't want to miss it! Helpful Resources The Accountants for CreativesAmy's Youtube"How Do I Reach a Real Person at the IRS?" ArticleAmy's Instagram https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o-j7YtM9XvA Transcript [MUSIC PLAYING] JENNY GUY: So that's a great answer. But I have gotten word from my team that we just showed up on live. I don't know why it took five minutes for us to get going, but we are just now going. So we were having a fun private conversation just about a minute ago. Guys if you are just-- you're not just joining us. We've been here. But we just got live. So that was a fun thing that just happened that has never happened before. I am here with Amy Northard. She is a partner at Amy Northard CPA, the Accountants For Creatives. And she was just explaining how she works with bloggers. We're here to talk about all things taxes. The question I ask you guys to post on if you're here with us in the comments is, have you already done your 2019 taxes yet? Or are you more or are they wait till the last minute kind of person? And Amy was explaining what it means to be an accountant for creatives. And can you just go a little bit more over about how you do work with bloggers? And some of the specific things that, questions that they bring to you? AMY NORTHARD: Yeah. So we work with bloggers virtually, bloggers all over the US. And we do it through video calls, phone calls, emails, those sorts of things. But we work with them to work on things like cash flow, savings for taxes, saving on taxes-- not only being prepared for taxes, but also how can we reduce that, how much you're paying on your income. So we try to help in all aspects of things related to taxes, bookkeeping, those sorts of things. Because you never want to get to the end of the year without knowing or having an idea. Otherwise, it can be really stressful. So helping them throughout the year, instead of just being that one-- the account that you just talk to once right around April. Prepare people a little bit. JENNY GUY: OK. So we just got a comment from Melissa Greeley Olivieri, I just want to make sure I'm saying it right. She says, no, she has not done her taxes yet. She's in Canada. And this is her first year doing them as a blogger. She's terrified. And she doesn't even know where to start. So we'll get to you in just a minute. But let me start out with this question that might kind of address everyone broadly. Since we're all creatives, pretty much everyone that's watching is a creative in one sense or another, most website owners of their own. Could you tell us any common struggles or mistakes that you see content creators making regularly with their taxes or just general accounting. AMY NORTHARD: I think, two big ones. One is not worrying about your bookkeeping throughout the year, and just saving that for once the year wraps up. And the reason I think that's a big mistake is, like I just mentioned, you want to throughout the year what you can expect for taxes. So forcing yourself. Getting in a good habit of maybe once a month, or at a minimum once a quarter, sitting down giving yourself a chunk of time to get that taken care of. And just kind of like make that the day. You act like you are your business's SEO or CFO. And spend time really treating it like a business. Even if you consider your blog a hobby, treat it like a business. Because the more you treat it like a business, the more you could potentially bring in through that venue.

The 3 Biggest, Hardest Lessons of Building a Million Dollar Business in 2021

If you're an entrepreneur, then you know that the journey to building a million dollar business is definitely not an easy one! It takes a considerable amount of trial and error to get things working just the way you want it. And sometimes, if we're not careful, impostor syndrome can set in! But as John Wooden once said, "Good things take time, as they should. We shouldn't expect good things to happen overnight. Actually, getting something too easily or too soon can cheapen the outcome.”  But what does it take to be a successful business owner? You need to be willing to work hard and make sacrifices in order for your business to grow. You need to surround yourself with highly capable and reliable individuals that believe in your mission. And most importantly, you have to be relentless in pursuing your goals! Ahh... I bet you're thinking, "Stephanie, aren't these 3 things a given? What else can I do to make 2022 a better year?"  So, join me in this episode, as I share the biggest lessons that helped me speed up the process and get that much closer to building a million dollar business: The first lesson is about investing in your team members so they can do their jobs well and feel empowered at work. Next is creating and streamlining systems + internal infrastructure within your organization so it runs like clockwork even when you're not around. (Because we all know how important it is for entrepreneurs to spend time on growing their businesses rather than wasting time doing administrative tasks themselves!) And finally, the third lesson: hiring coaches or mentors who can guide us through difficult times and provide us with valuable advice. This helps us take significantly less time to discover and understand what we might otherwise never thought of ourselves. These lessons were such a game-changer for me and I'm sure that these will help make 2022 your year of greater growth and abundance! "I was very intentional about all four of those things: how I was going to make my money, how I was going to invest it, how I would donate it, and how I would save it. And because of that, we have hit our financial goals for the year!" - Stephanie Skryzowski What you'll learn in this episode: My 5 goals were this year and how I achieved most of them What does building a million dollar business mean for us Why you should invest in your team The 3 Biggest, Hardest Lessons of Building a Million Dollar Business in 2021 Links mentioned in this episode: Cultivate What Matters Powersheets Episode 38: What to Do with a Cash Windfall Episode 41: Investing in Your Business Infrastructure to Build a Team with Amy Northard

I'm so hyped to share this episode because I've got my good friend and fellow finance nerd, Amy Northard, joining me on the show! Amy is a certified public accountant (aka a CPA!), who specializes in working with creative small business owners to make taxes and bookkeeping less stressful. She's the amazing woman behind The Accountant for Creatives. They help small business owners wade through all the financial stuff it takes to start and operate a business. You know, so they can focus on their craft! In addition to preparing tax returns and bookkeeping for their clients all over the US, Amy also enjoys teaching small businesses financial basics, through her online course “Be Your Own CFO”. Amy and I are actually in a very similar line of work when it comes to managing the numbers for small business owners. And I've really been following along with her journey online for several years. We even got to meet in person at a conference a couple years ago! Amy has been such a delight back then and even more so now. If you know her, I bet you agree that there's so much to learn from her and she's also really fun to share insights with.  Join us today, as we talk all about Amy's journey as an accountant, how she started out, how she came to have this amazing lifestyle business that she runs today. We also focused a lot about her team. She shared some of the challenges that she has faced over time and how she weathered them. Plus, what she has done to really help her make huge investments into the infrastructure of her business.  For those of you who struggle with hiring, you'd be pleased to know that she also started out on her own, and now has grown a team with full time employees. Imagine hiring FULL TIME employees vs hiring contractors. That's a big leap, but one that's possible for your business too! So, tune in, friends. It's going to be another information-packed conversation and as always, I'm so excited to share this with you all! "We want long term employees, not short turnover employees who are just here until they find the next better thing - we're hoping to be the next better thing." - Amy Northard "Instead of constantly just chasing more, more, more, more, more, spend some time focusing on the clients that you do have. Nail down that client experience before you go out and take on more." - Stephanie Skryzowski What you'll learn in this episode: How Amy Northard became The Accountant for Creatives How do you know when you're ready to hire and grow your team Why Amy made the switch from hiring contractors to employees Why you need to be more proactive in building a team The advantage of setting up a client waitlist system for your business Amy's insight on team retreats and why it's a good business investment Links mentioned in this episode: The Accountant for Creatives How Do I Reach a Real Person at the IRS? As you know, I can't say too many good things about my accountant, Amy Northard and her team. She is calm, knowledgeable, and so incredibly helpful and patient. I found her from a friend who had used her for her small business accounting and bookkeeping needs. I can't wait to share more of the contractors that I work with to make this small business run. https://amynorthardcpa.com/ If you follow along on Instagram, you'll see that I just rolled out a new brand that my friend Hannah at Brackish Creative created for me. My existing logo (I can't really call it a full blown brand since it was really just a logo) is going to be moved over for the time being to my Learn with Maizie side of the business until I build up a little more revenue on that side to get a proper rebrand. https://brackishcreative.com/ Along with a new brand, I wanted to improve my website and the ordering process on Shopify and I knew that beyond swapping out logos and the colors, it was above my paygrade. I came across a company called R+R Creative through a class I am taking about building and launching an online course. I looked at their website and scheduled some time to chat about what I was thinking for my website. They sent me two recent projects that they completed that were two Shopify websites that were very similar industries to me, which was super encouraging since I felt like they understand the space my business is in. I'm super excited about getting started with them as I know they are going to knock it out of the park. https://www.randrcreativeco.com/

We were lucky enough to have her on this episode of Worth It, where we talk all about her CPA firm, what a CPA does, and when a creative biz owner (like yourself) might need to bring a CPA onboard. She started her relationship with accounting in high school when her dad encouraged her to take classes, and the rest is history. But when she received her CPA designation and started working in a bigger firm, she quickly realized that working in a cubicle and doing the same work day in and day out wasn’t filling her up. So, like a true entrepreneur, Amy started looking into starting her own CPA firm. As she started attracting her own clients, she quickly realized that there was a real need in the small business space. When it came to finances, creative entrepreneurs and biz owners were really struggling to understand their finances and basic accounting principles. In fact, traditional accounting “speak” was downright overwhelming to them… so Amy sought to find ways to help. Today, she works with creative entrepreneurs and biz owners all over the US navigate taxes and set up bookkeeping systems so they can get back to the part of the business they love – the creative part. Of course, we talk all about when our listeners might want to hire a CPA and what a CPA even is because we know a lot of you are too afraid to ask that question

This week I sat down with CPA for Creatives, Amy Northard. Amy Northard, CPA provides tax preparation and bookkeeping services to creative small business owners. After graduation from Indiana University, and then passing the Certified Public Accountant’s exam, Amy began working at a small/mid-sized accounting firm, primarily with small businesses and personal taxes. Although she learned a great deal during her time at the firm, she had always felt the pull of entrepreneurship since her days of childhood lemonade stands. Her life-long dream finally came true when she opened Amy Northard, CPA LLC, where she passionately works with creative small business owners all over the US to take the stress out of their creative business taxes. HERE'S WHAT YOU’LL LEARN FROM THIS EPISODE: Why ignoring your taxes results in a lack of clarity around what’s going on with your finances and your business When it could be okay to have a loss in your business and the view you should have if there’s a recurring annual loss in your business Where to start with getting organized with your taxes What paying taxes actually means Strategies to look at in reducing what you own in taxes – this doesn’t mean spending more money in your business. When it makes sense to do your own taxes versus working with a tax professional What to keep in mind when it comes to keeping track of your business write-offs How to stop the catch up cycle with your tax Amy’s rule of thumb for what to set aside for taxes Business bank accounts you need LINKS WE MENTIONED ON THE SHOW: Amy's Website

Today on the podcast, we have Amy Northard CPA, accountant for the creatives. Amy has been a friend of ours for what feels like centuries at this point, and we have known her longer than we have known each other. She is awesome and makes everything sound so simple that you think maybe you could do it yourself, even though you can’t. Amy is so knowledgeable about all things taxes, bookkeeping, making things stress free, and making things easy to understand. You are going to learn a lot in today’s episode like what type of business should you be and how to even form it. She also shares her favorite apps, tools, and softwares to keep track of all your numbers. We go over the questions you should ask before you are ready to hire a CPA, things that you guys are forgetting to deduct, and stuff that you actually cannot deduct, that you might have thought were deductible. We also talk about the icky quarterly taxes and how to make that process super simple for you moving forward so that you are not scared and stressed out come tax season.
