What if your greatest challenges were actually your most profound teachers? In this soul-stirring conversation, educator and writer Daphne Gregory-Thomas weaves together the threads of loss, resilience, and transformation through her journey as an innovative educator, cancer survivor, and storyteller. Her narrative illuminates how life's greatest challenges often become our most profound teachers, from early maternal loss to creating groundbreaking educational programs for students with learning differences, and ultimately facing her own mortality through cancer diagnosis and recovery. Through her raw authenticity and deep wisdom, Daphne reveals how staying open to life's lessons - whether they come from students, strangers on New York City streets, or her own healing journey - has shaped her understanding of purpose and meaning. Her story reminds us that every moment holds the potential for transformation if we remain receptive to the teachers who appear in unexpected forms, from classroom students to cancer diagnoses, each offering their unique wisdom for those willing to listen. Daphne Gregory-Thomas is an essayist and educational innovator who spent 45 years as a high school educator in the New York/New Jersey area, specializing in programs for students with learning differences. Welcome BACK to another episode of the Breadwinner Energy® Podcast! Here's What We're Talking About:
You know what they say – the first $100,000 is the hardest, and it feels like scaling Mount Everest in flip-flops. In this episode of *The Higher Standard*, Chris and Saied unpack why breaking that six-figure milestone is such a struggle and how even Charlie Munger (RIP) called it a "b*tch." But once you hit that $100K, things start compounding faster than your excuses for skipping leg day. It's like flipping a switch to rocket toward $1 million – or so we tell ourselves between sweet cream nitros and existential dread.➡️ The boys also explore childhood money habits that might be sabotaging your wallet and dive into the *Case Shiller Index* to understand the warning signs of recessionary bubbles. From historical asset crashes to the 2008 housing crisis, they highlight why economic indicators are more than just fancy graphs. Saied's expressions are priceless – equal parts shock, dread, and "I need a drink." So buckle up, hit play, and see if you're on a path to wealth or just another bubble waiting to burst. Smash that like button, ring the bell, and remember: the road to wealth is paved with memes, mindset shifts, and maybe a little less avocado toast.

Qasar Younis and Peter Ludwig built Applied Intuition differently from most other startups. At a time of profligate spending at the peak of the tech bubble, they kept expenses low — and the company cash-flow positive for several years now. When every other company was moving toward remote work or a hybrid setup, they doubled down on the in-person, five-days-per-week office (while continuing a no-shoes philosophy). And when it comes to culture, they don't just post their corporate values on a wall, but encode them right into the very software that runs the company. The results? Applied reached a new milestone valuation earlier this year of $6 billion as well as announced a strategic partnership with automaker Porsche. It's a moment of success years and even decades in the making, with both Qasar and Peter growing up amidst the milieu of America's auto capital Detroit. Yet, it wasn't just friends and family working in the auto industry that led them to invent the future of the car, but also a willingness to learn from Silicon Valley's most thoughtful startup growth practices. Alongside host Danny Crichton and Lux general partner Bilal Zuberi, we weave a conversation about automotive and autonomy while we discuss the key decisions that founders must make when building a startup. We talk about the pressure of capitalism on company execution, using software to manage a growing organization, why Google exported so much talent in the early 2010s, how to protect engineering productivity with a customer-centric culture, how to construct a useful board of directors, and finally, why markets just “whomp” any other factor of success for entrepreneurs.

Here's the truth- you're not supposed to be liked by everyone in your business. When your focus is on being liked, that clouds your judgement and makes you less of a leader. Instead, it's important to focus on what's best for your business. That's the main key when making important business decisions. This episode uncovers some hard lessons I've learned as a leader and how you can set boundaries that will help your business grow. Are you a salon owner that's searching for more freedom? Two hardest lessons brought me home. The lessons are always worth the reward. All you have to do is allow yourself to move through the challenge and grab it! These are the two hardest lessons I learned by leaving the toxic, manipulative marriage I'd been in. As your business grows, it's important to remember that it is NOT your baby. You cannot coddle your business and expect it to thrive - you have to put it to work and make sure that it's bringing in the $$$$$. But no matter how much pride and joy it brings you, your business is and will always be a separate entity - and should be treated as such. So, let me say this again: Your business is not a baby. It should not require your full, undivided attention. A business that needs you this much will lead to burnout - and trust me, nobody wants that. Here are three things that we did to take our business from baby to well-oiled machine: 1. AUTOMATE One of the best ways to ensure that your business runs smoothly is to automate as many tasks as possible. This could mean setting up automated emails, automating your social media posts, or using a CRM to automate your sales process. By automating these tasks, you'll free up time for more important things (you know, like growing your business!). 2. HIRE THE RIGHT PEOPLE Another way to take your business to the next level is to make sure you have the right people on your team. This means finding and investing in people with the experience, mindset, and skills necessary to help your business grow. It also means finding people who share your vision and are on board with your company culture. 3. CREATE A ROUTINE Finally, it's important to create a routine for your business. Set aside certain days or times of the day for specific tasks. Create a checklist of tasks that need to be completed like clockwork each day/week/month. Build a routine that helps ensure that no task is overlooked and that your business runs like a fuel-efficient race car. So, when you get the urge to treat your business as you would an adorable, precious, and demanding baby... You need to remind yourself, that your business is an organization that's composed of highly capable individuals. Remember its purpose: to bring you time and financial freedom, serve your audience, and hopefully, make the world a better place. P.S. Are you ready to un-baby your business yet? Tune in to this week's episode for the full scoop on how we used these 3 strategies to transform 100 Degrees into the thriving 7-figure business that it is today! "Do you really want your business to be your baby? Demanding, needy, full of responsibilities that only you can fulfill. That's a hard no, right? I don't want a business that needs me 24/7 to make it happy." - Stephanie Skryzowski What you'll learn in this episode: Why we need to stop coddling our businesses The 3 things we did that helped turn the business from needy baby to well-oiled machine More resources to help you uplevel your mindset and business: 7 Best Business Tools to Boost Efficiency & Profitability Monthly Finance Habits for Better Numbers in 2022 Growing Your Wealth Mindset 3 Biggest, Hardest Lessons of Building a Million Dollar Business How to Create Intention and Flow in Your Business and At Home How We've Grown 400% in 4 Years

If you're an entrepreneur, then you know that the journey to building a million dollar business is definitely not an easy one! It takes a considerable amount of trial and error to get things working just the way you want it. And sometimes, if we're not careful, impostor syndrome can set in! But as John Wooden once said, "Good things take time, as they should. We shouldn't expect good things to happen overnight. Actually, getting something too easily or too soon can cheapen the outcome.” But what does it take to be a successful business owner? You need to be willing to work hard and make sacrifices in order for your business to grow. You need to surround yourself with highly capable and reliable individuals that believe in your mission. And most importantly, you have to be relentless in pursuing your goals! Ahh... I bet you're thinking, "Stephanie, aren't these 3 things a given? What else can I do to make 2022 a better year?" So, join me in this episode, as I share the biggest lessons that helped me speed up the process and get that much closer to building a million dollar business: The first lesson is about investing in your team members so they can do their jobs well and feel empowered at work. Next is creating and streamlining systems + internal infrastructure within your organization so it runs like clockwork even when you're not around. (Because we all know how important it is for entrepreneurs to spend time on growing their businesses rather than wasting time doing administrative tasks themselves!) And finally, the third lesson: hiring coaches or mentors who can guide us through difficult times and provide us with valuable advice. This helps us take significantly less time to discover and understand what we might otherwise never thought of ourselves. These lessons were such a game-changer for me and I'm sure that these will help make 2022 your year of greater growth and abundance! "I was very intentional about all four of those things: how I was going to make my money, how I was going to invest it, how I would donate it, and how I would save it. And because of that, we have hit our financial goals for the year!" - Stephanie Skryzowski What you'll learn in this episode: My 5 goals were this year and how I achieved most of them What does building a million dollar business mean for us Why you should invest in your team The 3 Biggest, Hardest Lessons of Building a Million Dollar Business in 2021 Links mentioned in this episode: Cultivate What Matters Powersheets Episode 38: What to Do with a Cash Windfall Episode 41: Investing in Your Business Infrastructure to Build a Team with Amy Northard

“The only way we move past fear of failure is to put ourselves out again and again until the sting disappears.”This quote by my friend Lewis Howes really sums up the big “F” word: Failure. It’s not a hot topic to talk about, and it isn’t easy to admit. Failure used to be my biggest fear. I used to define my life based on successes and failures, wins and losses, like life was some big scoreboard… But then I had a mindset shift. I realized that failures were just lessons in disguise, and if you look at each experience (good or bad) as a lesson, you’ll get MUCH more out of it than chalking it up to a success or failure. With this simple shift, I’m able to pursue my passion and, like Lewis said, put myself out there again and again, no matter the result. Today, I’m going to give you a candid look at my three greatest business failures (AKA LESSONS!) and what I learned from them with the hope that you can learn from them too.Click play to jump right in!For short, inspirational, kick-in-the-pants messages like you so often hear on the podcast, join my text community! In this podcast I talk about my recent OWI and how I learned from it. The lesson was to not always be so stubborn and become more vulnerable and allow yourself to ask for help. YOU ARE SMART, YOU ARE BRAVE, YOU ARE STRONG AND YOU ARE BEAUTIFUL
There have been so many times in my life where I thought I "knew it". I wouldn't say ”I knew it all” but I felt confident in the knowledge I used to make decisions. 2019 was one of the best years of my life and yet I still found myself face to face with the realization that "self-knowledge availed [me] nothing”. Knowledge is valuable, Knowledge is power and Knowledge is helpful... But Knowledge isn't everything. Much like awareness, knowledge is but a start. Knowledge in itself isn't a solution, it's what you do with the knowledge that will determine the outcome. On this episode I talk about an interaction I had with a friend regarding social media, the ”them’s” and the ”they’s”, and the uncomfortable fact that most of my problems are created from my own deep-seeded insecurities. I want to thank all my family and friends for being just that, friends and family. Here's to ”Loving what is” in 2020. If you know someone that would benefit from hearing a podcast like this, share it with them and if you know someone that may be struggling with mental health or addiction issues reach out. Love you!
2019 smacked us in the face… hard! We had epic collaborations, created and launched numerous products and services for clients, and fully jumped into joining our business as one. There is no more “I”! But just when we got comfortable and in the groove, life threw us some lessons to test our boundaries and worth. In this latest episode, my hunky hubby and I talk about what we'll do different in 2020. #Boundaries #KnowYourWorth #Couplepreneurs

You are expendable. Don't be afraid to go away for a while. Use it or lose it. Pick one thing... These are some of the biggest lessons I and my community learned in 2018. Check out the podcast and let me know what you think. Happy New Year!

Today it's just you and me for another SOLO SHOW! I recently polled my instagram followers about what type of content and topics you guys would want to see and lots of you said you wanted more solo shows, so your wish is my command.. PLUS they're really fun for me too! Today we are talking about the top 5 things that I've learned on my fitness and let me tell you… most of these were learned the HARD way. I started my fitness journey about 8 years ago and I did EVERYTHING wrong in the beginning and basically made things way harder than they needed to be for YEARS. I saw the light eventually, have learned SO much, and now I'm a successful coach and everything, but I would have saved so much time and frustration if I would've understood these 5 lessons sooner. Obviously I can't go back in time yet, BUT hopefully by sharing these lessons with you, you'll get to skip over a little bit of that struggle that I went through. PLUS the sooner you can learn and apply these lessons to fitness, the sooner you can apply them to the rest of your life too. Because while I am talking about these in the context of health and fitness, they can all be directly applied to ANY other area of life as well, and that's one of the reasons why health/fitness/wellness are foundational topics of this show-- they really translate into every other area of life and are a catalyst for growth. I met JJ Virgin at a podcast event in San Diego this year. We talked about most diets work temporarily, but they are hard to sustain. The more I talked to her, the more I appreciated her NO BS approach, and how much science she had to back up her opinions. She was nice enough to send me some snakes and bars to test out. They are the perfect mix of "good but not too good." Some these bars I've tried in the past are awful, others are really yummy - and the minute you're done eating one you want another six. Everything I've tried from JJ's site has been good not so good that I want another. You Are Strong as Your Toughest Challenge I spoke about his last week and in trying to get on the virgin diet, it wasn't I was missing food, or having legit cravings, it was that I have myself trained like a dog to get a snack at 10:30 AM and 3:00 PM (with lunch in the middle). I have a reminder on my watch and all week, I would get up and snack (strawberries, maybe one of JJ's bars) but she really wants you go to four to six hours between meals (meaning, no snacks). So it wasn't until Friday that I made it from breakfast to Lunch. Then the next day, I took that vircory and made it the whole day without snacking. It's hard to battle your mind, and to battle old habits, but you can do this. Dave's New Spotify Playlist Game to Get Your Sweating at the Gym Anything you can do to keep exercise fun, to keep you pushing a little harder is good in my book (always consult your doctor). There is a difference between "being active" and getting 10,000 steps and going to the gym and pushing your body ever so slightly past its limits and working up a sweat. One easy way to do this fast call HIIT training. HIIT is a training technique which involves intense bursts of high-intensity exercise followed by varying periods of low-intensity active rest, or complete rest. HIIT can be a great option for staying in shape when time is an issue, as you can get an amazing fat-burning workout in 20 minutes or less For me this means I fire up my Spotify playlist and when a new song came on a jogged for 30 seconds and then walked the rest of the song (for starters). Later in the week, feeling good I added a new twist. I would jog every time the chorus came on, and would keep jogging until the verse part of the song returned. This can be quite a workout if you have a song that keeps repeating the chorus at the end. Who is JJ Virgin? She's a hall of fame nutritionist and celebrity trainer. Effect on Emotions The way mindfulness has helped my emotions is, I tend to be very ... I'm a quick start in the Colby. I'm a red on the color code personality. Something to be a reminder. Suggested Resources Book: Miracle Mindset: A Mother, Her Son, and Life's Hardest Lessons by JJ Virgin (We're re-titling it Warrior Mom) App: N/A (My Journal is my best 'App') Bullying Story Bullying obviously has a whole spectrum, right? The outright obvious, like, when I was in elementary school, we had a bully that I shut down who was bullying one of my girlfriends. I just stepped. I was always the tall kid. I'm six feet tall and she was a little five foot tall Japanese Gal and this kid was bullying her. I just stepped in front and was like, go ahead, hit her. Like you'll have to get through me first, which shut it all down. So there's the obvious bully, but I think even more dangerous is that kind of bully who is emotionally bullying or bullying by telling you the way it's going to be. When my son was the victim of a hit and run, our first doctor at the first hospital was a bully. He was the head of the trauma center there. Now this was in palm springs, so they're used to having seventy and eighty year old people come in. And if my son was 80 years old and came in, in that condition, there's no way he would've made it. But my son was 16 and he stopped and literally looked at us and said, your son is not going to make it through the night. He needs to have another surgery. But he'd never survive the airlift. Even if he did, he wouldn't survive the surgery. And even if he did, he'd be so brain damaged, it wouldn't be worth it .You have to let him go. I call that a bully. My 15 year old son stood right up to this guy and said, yeah, so point two five percent chance he'd make it. And that's when the doctor said that sounds about right. And my son said, so we'll take those odds. And I looked at that doctor. I go, you're overruled. You need to get the paperwork going.
JJ Virgin In this episode JJ and I spoke about all of the things. From motherhood, family, growing a business, sugar cravings, willpower and victimhood, we talked about how our mindset is the foundational support for every belief we have (something we talk about all the time on the show). So many of us become attached to a story of victimhood and if we're not mindful, it can seep into every area in our lives. I love how JJ breaks this down in the episode and sums it up with her quote, "There are no victims, only volunteers." One never knows what they’re going to do when tragedy hits, but JJ had to keep it together and learn fast after one of her son’s was the victim of a brutal hit-and-run accident. With 13 broken bones and an aortic tear, doctors knew he needed surgery, but they also warned he’d likely not survive the airlift to another hospital – much less the actual surgery. They gave him the heart-wrenching odds of a .25 percent survival rate. With that knowledge, JJ had a choice to make. Fortunately, the wisdom of her other son rang through as he asked the doctor, “Point-two-five isn’t zero, right?” Those words were just what JJ needed to make the choice to help her son FIGHT for survival. After a successful airlift and surgery, JJ’s son survived, but because of the trauma was in a coma. It was a daunting road ahead, but JJ start asking herself the “right” questions. It wasn’t “how will he survive this?” It was, “How do I get him to 110%?” And one of the top things she could do to get him there was to take care of herself. “I did what I needed to do to take extreme care of myself.” JJ knew she had to: 1. Be there for her son. 2. Ensure her book was a success (The Virgin Diet). 3. She needed to put her health FIRST. And that’s what she did to make sure she was at the top of her game to help her son fight for his life. Not long after JJ’s son’s accident, it was suggested that in addition to the book she had just written (The Virgin Diet), she should write about her recent experience with her son – what tools she used and how she kept strong and positive throughout it all. Thank goodness she said yes to that! JJ’s teachings have come to help thousands of clients reframe their mindset and realize their worth, mind and body. Oddly enough sometimes, it’s not the diet or exercise component that hangs people up, it’s the actual saying or writing down of the words, “I am worthy.” That’s great, but how do you get someone to actually feel worthy? JJ encourages taking ACTION. It’s all about shifting your mindset and moving into action. JJ teaches her members/readers to practice their “Daily Jam.” Upon waking up every day, the Daily Jam consists of: 1. GRATITUDE: Writing down three things you are grateful for (starting the day in gratitude is a MUST). 2. APPRECIATION: Text someone a message of appreciation. 3. MIRACLE: Write down three miracles that happen that day. And then… Write “I am worthy.” It can be a super difficult thing for some to write, but they work their way up to realizing they are a complete bad ass (and that’s how we ALL should feel by the way). JJ is completely transparent when it comes to her own case of “imposter syndrome.” We all have moments of not feeling like we’re good enough or worthy – that’s reality. There are still days where she wonders what the hell she’s doing. But then she remembers (from personal experience) that no one has it all together. Every successful person has failed their way there… in one way or another. Failure is just a part of life. “What if fear was actually a sign that you’re stepping up onto a bigger platform and you should feel that? What if when you’re feeling nothing, it’s because you’re playing it safe.” Fear is never easy to take… but quit playing it safe. Play ALL OUT, even if it means falling on your face. “It’s necessary, it sucks, it’s painful, but it makes it all amazing and worth it.” You must be willing to acknowledge the good with the bad. What was good? What were the wins? It’s about appreciating the present moment and lessons and getting real with gratitude. “When you’re scared to death and you want to get fear shoved out of the way, gratitude shoves it and builds resilience.” But JJ is again full honest… It never gets easier to take, but the tougher the experience, the more you step up, and the more you grow. “If your purpose is big enough, it makes you push through. And every time you push through, you’re building that muscle of resilience.” So on that note, know that you can handle “stuff” – whatever it is. If you set your mind right, you can reframe anything to be a good thing or your miracle. -- JJ Virgin a is celebrity nutrition and fitness expert, who teaches clients how to lose weight and master their mindset so they can lead bigger, better lives. Back in 2012 when I was still in fitness, a friend recommended that I follow JJ Virgin because she was up to "big things" in the industry. It was only a month or so after I did that her son was in an awful hit and run accident. I followed her posts and updates over the ensuing weeks and months to see how it would unfold and was amazed and delighted to see that against major odds, he pulled through and was able to not only live, but recover beyond anyone's wildest imagining - except hers. JJ was pulling for him to be 110% the whole time. In this interview we talk about how she made it through those difficult times, and is still doing so. And my favorite part is this - during a time when a lot of people would have totally excused it if she dropped everything, her healthy habits and self-care, her business, and any other obligations, she doubled down on all of it. She shares her reason why in today's interview and it's so so good. Enjoy! There wasn’t a great deal of hope that her son would live, let alone recover, but JJ wasn’t willing to give up, and she describes the ways in which she maintained her hope when faced with the unthinkable.
