Team Deakins chats with the creative cinematographer Chayse Irvin (BLONDE, BLACKKKLANSMEN, HANNAH) about filmmaking and his career. We discuss the benefits of preparing for a scene and then finding it on the day, and Chayse describes how he brings an audience into his work through his compositions. Chayse speaks on his ongoing collaboration with artist and director Khalil Joseph and the unique and artistically productive environment he creates. Roger and James also dive into Chayse's work on Andrew Dominik's BLONDE and the similarly unique challenges he faced when shooting the film. We hope you enjoy the episode! - Recommended Episode Viewing: BLONDE, HANNAH
We all knew that Andrew Dominik's "Blonde" would be one of the year's most controversial films before its world premiere at the Venice International Film Festival. And that turned out to be true. While its depiction of its female subject rightfully received criticism, the cinematography by director of photography Chayse Irvin was consistently praised for its black and white compositions, use of filters, and blending of film stocks to create something vivid and evocative. Chayse spent some time talking with us about his work on the film, which you can listen to down below. Enjoy, and thank you! Check out more on NextBestPicture.com Please subscribe on... For episode 103, Austin begins the 2022 cram! He talks about several 2022 films he saw, but only covers one long form and goes solo this week, and that film is Andrew Dominik's Blonde (2022). This film is divisive, and certainly negatively polarized, but Austin gives his two cents in this episode. All that and more on Medium Cool: A Movie Podcast. We tackle one of the most polarizing films of the year for our featured review this episode: Andrew Dominik's “Blonde”. It's a fictionalized interpretation of the life and career of Marilyn Monroe, but does it go too far? And will the woke mob be coming for us, and/or cumming with us? Let's just say Matt and Travis don't see eye to eye on this one. 0:00 – Introductions 05:12 – “Blonde” Review 52:44 – What We've Been Watching Music Intro: Heart of Glass - Blondie Outro: Cujo Kiddies - Disq
For our first episode of 2022 prestige movie season, we break down Nicholas Stoller's BROS, Andrew Dominik's BLONDE, Anne Fletcher's HOCUS POCUS 2, and Lena Dunham's CATHERINE CALLED BIRDY.
Its October, which means time to watch some Horror movies! But first, Andrew Dominik's Blonde, which unfortunately fits right in alongside Dario Argento's Inferno, Dead and Buried, and others…
As the British pound plummets, we take comfort in the comparatively encouraging rise of streaming content available. Sticking with the theme of economic uncertainty James reviews the HBO and BBC collaboration Industry as it enters its sophomore season and delivers his thoughts on Amanda Seyfried's impressive turn as Elizabeth Holmes in The Dropout. Elsewhere Dan takes on the responsibility of reviewing the latest Star Wars universe offering, Andor as well as mildly condemning Steven Moffat's latest TV show Inside Man. Reel News features a frustratingly ungrateful William Shatner, a much hated Chris Pratt and a collective recognition that most actors don't wish to consume their own work. Finally, our main review is a film that has dominated headlines in recent weeks, for all the wrong reasons! Despite receiving a 14 minute standing ovation at the Venice film festival, Andrew Dominik's Blonde seems to have fallen foul when it comes to critical consensus but even the majority of everyday Joe's/Jane's seem to hate it too. Is it really as reprehensible as everybody is saying?
Kicking off Spooky SZN with a… stutter step? How does Andrew Dominik's “Blonde,” a fictional telling of Marilyn Monroe's life, have parallels with Sam Raimi's Evil Dead series? Is John Carpenter giving all his babies away? Olivia Wilde's Don't Worry Darling and Andrew Dominik's Blonde are two of the most polarizing and controversial movies of the year, See How They Run is a Who Done it movie that tries to comment on the genre of who done it movies. I am talking about all 3 films on this podcast enjoy!
Enlisting the incendiary voices of old friends Filthy Armenian, of Filthy Armenian's Adventures and the Back Wall, and Jack Mason, of the Perfume Nationalist, the conversation turns towards the formerly retired pop cultural trope that is the damaged blonde, once again alive and well! Two of the most discussed cultural artifacts right now revive the damaged blonde to Promethean proportions! First, we have Ryan Murphy's new Netflix series, Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, in which Evan Peters the titular iconic cannibalistic serial killer. A disjointed and weird program, the show often feels like two diametrically opposed shows stacked on top of one another. One, a delightfully and almost comically extreme torture porn, and the other, a comically absurd and ridiculous BLM propaganda piece. Next, we have filmmaker Andrew Dominik's Blonde, a visually sumptuous and undeniably extreme horror film masquerading as a biopic of Marilyn Monroe, played by the most beautiful actress alive Ana de Armas, and inarguably the greatest work of film art of this decade. SOUNDTRACK: Macabre "Jeffrey Dahmer Blues" Clock DVA "The Unseen" Jeffrey Dahmer "Raw or Die" The Kinks "Celluloid Heroes" New Order "1963" Lana del Rey "National Anthem" LINKS: The Perfume Nationalist Adam, Bradford Kessler, and Harry Tafoya on Filthy Armenian's Adventures The Back Wall Emmalea Russo on Blonde

In this episode, Dhruv and Amartya discuss the latest Netflix release that everyone loves to hate right now. They try to review the film for what it is vs. what they want it to be—still, concluding that Dominik's technically proficient but painfully unsubtle approach fails to show anything that hasn't been shown before in shorter, more viscerally compelling films. Listen to the full episode to hear them discuss specific bits they liked from the film, other bits that made them roll their eyes, the general (good & bad) discourse around the film, and other films that cover the same ground as "Blonde" in ways infinitely more effective! This week we have two movies on the docket. We start with Gaysorn Thavat's THE JUSTICE OF BUNNY KING (3:53) a complex, emotionally challenging drama about a homeless mother (Essie Davis) struggling against New Zealand's social services system to win back custody of her children. Then we review Andrew Dominik's BLONDE (25:59) a disgusting, exploitative, and misogynist, fictionalized look at the life of Marilyn Monroe (Ana de Armas). We have A LOT to say about this infuriating film that wallows in trauma and insults Monroe's legacy—none of it is good.
